Right then, what a nail-biter of a contest we have witnessed and it had us engrossed all the way through. The action in ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers continues as we have two games lined up on Thursday, the 22nd of June as well. It will be Netherlands vs United States and West Indies vs Nepal. Both games will start at 12.30 pm IST (7 am GMT). Do join us a bit early for the build-up as well. Until then, goodbye and cheers!

Richie Berrington, the captain of Scotland says that he is delighted to be on the winning side and what an exceptional knock it was from Michael Leask as it always feels good to win against Ireland. He adds that the efforts have been put in by the team to prepare for this tournament and they are feeling delighted to have started on a high with a victory. Mentions that the bowlers bowled brilliantly at the top and that set the platform for the rest to follow. Claims that a good start with the ball and a brilliant finish with the bat at the end of the game won them this match. Ends by saying that he is just relieved and delighted to get over the line.

Andy Balbirnie, the skipper of Ireland says that the score was good on the board but credit to the opposition for winning the game. He adds that they would want to get better and win such close games, especially defending the total. Adds that he can not blame a particular bowler as they put in their 100% effort and it is just that the opposition was a bit better than them today. He closes by saying that the inning of Curtis Campher was high quality and the partnership with George Dockrell was brilliant. Adds that they were happy at half-time but a bit low at the moment.

The man of the moment Michael Leask is rightfully adjudged as the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his knock of 91 runs in 61 deliveries. He says that he can not put his feeling into words at the moment as this victory tastes a world lot better. He adds that the team has got a lot of belief in each other and when given a chance they can get over the line in such tight games more often than not. He closes by saying that they have got a great bunch of lads and this is just the starting as the main aim is to play in the major tournament in India later this year.

Time for the presentations...

Ireland’s batting effort go off to the worst possible start as they lost Paul Stirling and skipper Andy Balbirnie on golden ducks in the first over of the inning bowled by Brandon McMullen. Harry Tector was his next victim as he got the batter to edge one to slip and when Mark Watt dismissed Lorcan Tucker in his first over, Ireland found themselves 33 for the loss of four wickets inside the first Powerplay. Andy McBrine held up one end as he saw the carnage happen at the other end and helped gain some control in the inning with a steady 32. Curtis Campher and George Dockrell got together and put up a 136-run partnership for the sixth wicket in just 150 deliveries to get Ireland into a position of strength. Dockrell reached his half-century but was dismissed on 69 when McMullen was brought back into the attack a little too late. Curtis Campher reached his maiden ODI century scoring 120 runs in 108 balls and showed what his team was missing in their previous loss against Oman. Brandon McMullen was the pick of the bowlers for Scotland, claiming a five-wicket haul, but was underused as he bowled just seven overs.

Scotland started their run chase in a disappointing manner as they lost Matthew Cross early to Mark Adair but his opening partner Christopher McBride held up one end and scored a good half-century. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals with Brandon McMullen, George Munsey, Richie Berrington, and Tomas Mackintosh all getting to double digits but not being able to capitalize. Michael Leask looked good right from the start and he was joined by Mark Watt who played a good counter-attacking inning as he scored 47 in 43 balls with the two adding 82 runs in 67 balls for the 8th wicket. Watt's wicket opened the door for Ireland to make a comeback but Safyaan Sharif played a responsible knock and Leask did the rest. Mark Adair had three wickets under his belt and almost defended 8 runs in the last over. George Dockrell and Joshua Little claimed two wickets each with Curtis Campher and Benjamin White chipping in with one a piece.

OH, MY WORD! WHAT A GAME!!! Michael Leask is the hero for Scotland as he has pulled off a blinder here to take his team home! What a remarkable game we have witnessed here. The momentum has swung both ways all through this tie and whenever either team looked down and out, they would find a way to claw themselves out of the hole. In the end, it was Scotland who managed to hold their nerves and start their campaign with a win. A special mention for the efforts of Curtis Campher who played a remarkable knock for Ireland but despite his efforts, they now suffer consecutive losses.

Commentary

We are back for Scotland's reply as the umpires make their way out to the middle. The Ireland players are in a huddle at the boundary line before taking their respective positions on the field. Matthew Cross and Christopher McBride will open the inning for Scotland and will want to get a good partnership going here. Joshua Little has the new ball in his hand and is ready to begin proceedings. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Scotland will have their work cut out trying to chase this target on a pitch that will provide some assistance to the bowlers. That said, the Irish bowling contingent has not been at their best though and if the Scottish openers get off to a good start we will be in for a cracking run chase. Will Ireland get their first win? Or will Scotland begin their campaign with a victory? We will find out shortly when we return for the run chase.

George Dockrell says that Curtis Campher played an incredible knock as he came out to bat when they were in trouble and to play that inning after missing out in the last game shows immense quality. Mentions that they had a good partnership against Scotland last year and felt that if they got in, they could put a decent total on the board. Admits that he is still finding himself a bit but that is the nature of the game and he looked to get a few balls away toward the end. Adds that he is just happy to get runs on the board and contribute to the total. Claims that only half the work is done but runs on the board always helps and they need to bowl well. Reckons that they need to keep it at the stumps and be disciplined while performing well in the field.

Scotland, on the other hand, would be really disappointed that they have let the opposition score this many after having the start they had. The sluggishness in the field has proved costly to them. Brandon McMullen was brilliant early on in his first spell and took the wickets of Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie in the first over itself but ever since the Powerplay they lagged behind the Irish side who executed their plans to perfection. They held back Brandon McMullen through the middle overs when they needed a breakthrough and despite taking a five-wicket haul, he ended up bowling only 7 overs. Chris Sole, Christopher McBride, and Mark Watt chipped in with one wicket each but the Scottish players will feel that they have allowed this game to get away.

Ireland have bounced back tremendously well in this game after being held back by Scotland early on in the first Powerplay. After losing 4 wickets early on, Curtis Campher and George Dockrell put up a brilliant partnership of more than hundred runs and that helped the team to reach the target of 286 in their 50 overs. At one point it looked like Ireland would not be able to play out their full quota but Curtis Campher stood out with the bat in his hand as he scored a century on his comeback into the team after being benched for the first game as he accumulated 120 runs in 108 deliveries. He was well supported by George Dockrell who scored 69 runs and held up one end.

We are done with the pre-match formalities. Paul Stirling and Andy McBrine are the two openers for Ireland while Brandon McMullen will bowl the first over.

The match officials are making their way into the field followed by the players of both sides for their respective National Athems.

Andy Balbirnie the skipper of Ireland says that we need to win today and batting or bowling first doesn't matter. He adds that they need to turn around a lot of things they did wrong against Oman. He also adds that the surface will not help the spinners it seems and batting first the team needs to score big. He closes by saying that this is a must-win game for us and we need to find a way to win the game and score big. Just one change as Curtis Campher comes in.

Richie Berrington the skipper of Scotland says they will bowl first as the surface looks solid and will remain true throughout the game. He adds that in a game with an early start, the bowlers might well get some help from the conditions. He also adds that the surface looks really solid to bat. He closes by saying that it is alsways exciting to face Ireland and they will be looking to win this.

Scotland (Playing XI) - Matthew Cross, Christopher McBride, Brandon McMullen, George Munsey, Richie Berrington (C), Tomas Mackintosh (WK), Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Chris Sole, Safyaan Sharif

Ireland (Playing XI) - Paul Stirling, Andy McBrine, Andy Balbirnie (C), Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (WK), Curtis Campher (replaces Graham Hume), George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Joshua Little, Benjamin White.

TOSS-: Scotland have won the toss and elected to BOWL first.

On the other hand, Scotland will be starting their campaign today and will want to mark this first game with a win against an unconfident Irish side. Richie Berrington has become one of the most essential run-getters for his side and George Munsey has contributed decently well recently. The bowling department would rest on the broad shoulders of Mark Watt. An exciting contest between these two strong contenders awaits us. Which team will you be backing as we close in on the start of the game? Stay tuned for the toss and team updates.

Ireland has started off with a massive blow as they lost to Oman in their first game. Harry Tector was the only batter who showed some fight for them while others got off to decent starts but could not capitalize and as a result, they posted a below-par total. The Irish team would be itching to get off the mark and get points on the board as in a tournament like this, one can not afford to lose their first two games. Their batting needs to improve drastically and their bowling too has to show discipline if they are to bounce back with a positive result.

Hello, and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen to our coverage of match number 7 in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers as the hunt for the last two spots in the 2023 Cricket World Cup heats up.
