Commentary

Right then, that's it from the coverage of this game. South Africa take a 1-nil lead in this 3 match ODI series. These two teams will meet again on 4th October for the second ODI. The first ball will be at 11.30 am GMT. Although, you can join us early for the build-up. ADIOS!

Temba Bavuma, the winning skipper is in for a chat. He starts by saying that it was a strong start to the series, with the team managing to post a competitive total. Ryan and Stubbs were outstanding with the bat, and the lower order made valuable contributions as well. The bowlers were disciplined and executed their plans perfectly, which worked in the team's favor. As for Tony de Zorzi, the update is that he will go for a scan tomorrow, and they will assess the situation after that. The bowling unit performed exceptionally well with the new ball, applying consistent pressure by bowling in the right areas, which ultimately brought success.

Paul Stirling, the skipper of Ireland is in for a chat here. He expressed pride in the moment, especially with his father watching. The pitch did more than expected, offering some movement both in the evening and early on. However, a couple of dropped catches cost them the chance to control the game earlier. Reflecting on missed opportunities, he acknowledged that failing to capitalize when South Africa was three down allowed the opposition to build a crucial partnership. Hopes to regroup and come back stronger on Friday.

Ryan Rickelton wins the Player of the Match award for his outstanding knock of 91. He says they were under pressure but he was just looking to build a partnership and bat long. The tail wagged well to add those runs towards the end.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

Earlier in the innings, South Africa lost three wickets inside the first Powerplay, but that fourth-wicket stand brought them back in the contest. Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs did a wonderful job to give a boost to the score. Later, the tail-enders came in and chipped in with some crucial runs to put up a great target. Mark Adair was inspirational for with the ball. He dominated with the new ball, but could not find much support from his spinners.

For Ireland, they just could not form partnerships. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals. A couple of their batters got off to starts but none went onto make it into something significant. In the end, they have fallen well short of the target that was set for them.

A brilliant effort from South Africa and they have bagged a strong win here! After setting a par target for their opposition, South Africa's bowlers began brilliantly. The likes of Ngidi and Lizaad Williams were excellent. They got early wickets which pushed Ireland onto the back foot and they just didn't recover after that. Ottneil Baartman along with Bjorn Fortuin managed to continue the pressure in the middle overs. Five bowlers were used in total and all of them picked a wicket at least. Williams was the pick with a four-fer.

Commentary

We are back for Ireland's reply. Ireland need 272 runs to record their second ever victory against South Africa in ODIs. South African players stride out and take the field. Followed by Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling who walk out to open for Ireland. Lungi Ngidi to start with the first new ball.

... The Run Chase ...

Right then, Ireland will need a solid start in reply, but with spin likely to play a role later, it promises to be an intriguing second half of the match. South Africa do have some quality bowlers at their exposal and won't make it easy for the opposition. Do join us for the second essay.

Ryan Rickelton is in for a quick word. He starts by saying that they found themselves under pressure early on as the ball moved significantly, making batting challenging. Mentioned that their focus was on building a partnership, and got great support from Tristan Stubbs. Adds that after losing three early wickets, the mindset had to shift to a more defensive, Test match mode approach to weather the storm.

Once this crucial stand was broken, wickets fell in clusters, but South Africa’s lower order chipped in with valuable contributions. Williams, Ngidi, and Fortuin’s cameos helped push the total to a competitive score, which should give their bowlers something to defend. For Ireland, it was Mark Adair who stood out with the ball with his four-fer.

Just when Ireland had the upper hand, Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs mounted a remarkable fightback. Their 152-run partnership not only steadied the ship but also turned the tide in South Africa’s favor. Rickelton's composed knock anchored the innings, while Stubbs unleashed a flurry of strokes, keeping the scoreboard ticking. Ryan Rickelton though will be gutted to fall short of his ton by just nine runs.

South Africa have posted a fighting total on the board, despite early trouble in the first ODI against Ireland. After opting to bat first, Ryan Rickelton kicked things off in style with a boundary off the very first ball. However, Tony de Zorzi struggled to get going and after an early life, he eventually fell, triggering a top-order collapse. Mark Adair and Craig Young were relentless with the new ball, and Ireland capitalized, leaving South Africa reeling at 39/3 inside Powerplay 1.

We are done with the pre-match proceedings. The match is set to begin. Ireland players spread out on the field. Followed by Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi who walk out to open for the Proteas. It will be Mark Adair who starts with the new ball. Here we go...

Right then, both the teams stride out and line-up on the field for their respective national anthems. It will be South Africa's first. Followed by the one of Ireland.

Paul Stirling, the skipper of Ireland joins in for a quick chat. Starts by saying that it is a proud moment for him, on 400 international caps. He states that it was a difficult decision at the toss for him, but now as they know they need to bowl first. They will take it over by over. Adds that it is all about expliting the conditions and hopes that the bowlers give it a good crack with some grass on the deck. Concludes by showing his excitement about Gavin Hoey making his debut, expressing his delight for the young player. He also mentioned that the team will be fielding three seamers in their lineup and is looking forward to the game ahead.

Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa is in for a quick chat here. He confirmed that South Africa will bat first. He noted that it's a good wicket with a nice covering of grass, and they want to capitalize on the favorable batting conditions. Bavuma added that there could be some movement under the lights in the second innings, which factored into their decision. Their goal is to post a strong total and rely on their bowlers to finish the job.

PITCH REPORT - It's a hot day in Abu Dhabi as Niall O'Brien steps in to give his pitch report. He mentions that pitch number 5 is being used at this venue today. Vernon Philander joins the discussion, noting that there's some grass on the surface, which bowlers will need to exploit early on. He points out that while the grass will aid bowlers, it will also offer batters a chance to ride the bounce well. According to Philander, bowlers will need to flirt with the outside edge to be effective on this track. O'Brien adds that in the last 10 matches, teams batting first have won seven times, with Philander concluding that a score of 280 should be competitive for the side batting first.

Ireland (Playing XI) - Paul Stirling (C), Andy Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Harry Tector, Stephen Doheny (WK), George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, Mark Adair, Craig Young, Graham Hume, Gavin Hoey.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Ryan Rickelton (WK), Tony de Zorzi, Temba Bavuma (C), Rassie van der Dussen, Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder, Andile Phehlukwayo, Bjorn Fortuin, Lizaad Williams, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman.

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in favour of South Africa. They will BAT first.

With the history slightly favoring South Africa, holding a 6-1 ODI record over Ireland, the question is: can the Proteas stamp their authority, or will Ireland continue their impressive rise in world cricket? We shall find out soon, as the toss is just around the corner. Stay tuned.

Ireland, on the other hand, enters this series full of belief after their recent triumph over the Proteas. The leadership of Paul Stirling, combined with the experience of Mark Adair and the batting prowess of Andy Balbirnie, makes this Irish side a dangerous opponent. Players like Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker add depth to a team eager to prove that their recent success is no fluke. They’ve shown they can challenge any team on the big stage, and with conditions likely to support high scores, we could be in for a thrilling contest.

Welcome to the first ODI between Ireland and South Africa, a contest brimming with opportunity and intrigue. After a hard-fought T20I series where the Proteas shared the trophy with Ireland, South Africa arrives hungry to regain their form and pride under the leadership of Temba Bavuma. Their squad boasts an exciting blend of talent, with Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi expected to headline the top order. The pace-heavy bowling unit, led by Lungi Ngidi and featuring Nandre Burger and Lizaad Williams, promises fiery spells on a batting-friendly Abu Dhabi pitch.

... MATCH DAY ...

The UAE remains at the epicenter of limited-overs cricket, with the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 looming. Yet, before this marquee event, an enticing series is set to captivate audiences in Abu Dhabi. South Africa and Ireland are poised to clash again, this time in a comprehensive 3-match ODI series, with the renowned Sheikh Zayed Stadium serving as the exclusive battleground. South Africa's journey since their T20 World Cup Final appearance has been rocky. A 3-0 T20I series loss to the West Indies earlier this year marked the beginning of their struggles. Their UAE campaign has failed to reverse this trend - they suffered a decisive ODI series defeat against Afghanistan, followed by a shared T20I series trophy with Ireland after surrendering an early lead. This forthcoming series offers the Proteas a crucial chance to reclaim their form, confidence, and wounded pride. Under Temba Bavuma's leadership, South Africa aims to stage a comeback. The probable top order includes Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi alongside Bavuma. Stubbs, Rassie, and Kyle Verreynne are set to fortify the middle order. Notably, T20I captain Aiden Markram's absence from the squad, possibly due to a batting slump, has raised eyebrows. The Proteas are banking on a pace-heavy quartet featuring the skiddy Nandre Burger, Lizaad Williams, Lungi Ngidi, and Wiaan Mulder. Phew. That’s serious pace. The experienced Andile Phehlukwayo is slated to fulfill the all-rounder role. Bjorn Fortuin is their only spinner in the squad considering the conditions. Ireland, in contrast, has shown flashes of impressive cricket, notably in their recent T20I encounter where they dismantled the Proteas' batting lineup to avoid a series sweep. For this ODI series, they've wisely retained the core of their successful squad. Paul Stirling continues to lead the charge, with the experienced Mark Adair, whose bowling heroics were instrumental in Ireland's victory, also included. The middle order remains robust, featuring the talents of Dockrell, Campher, Harry Tector, and Lorcan Tucker. While inclusion of the seasoned Andy Balbirnie adds further depth to the lineup. Ireland's squad boasts a well-balanced mix of key bowlers and versatile all-rounders. This composition has allowed them to prove they're far from being underdogs in international cricket. Although South Africa holds a commanding 6-1 lead in their ODI head-to-head record against Ireland, recent performances suggest that the Irish are not to be underestimated. The Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, known for its batting-friendly conditions, typically sees first innings scores ranging from 270 to 300. Both teams possess formidable batting lineups, which could lead to some high-scoring encounters. Can the Proteas stage a convincing comeback and reassert their dominance? Or will the Irish squad, buoyed by their recent T20I success, mount a serious challenge and potentially upset the odds? Which side are you going to support, aye?
