Commentary

Right then, that's it from the coverage of this game. The Indian T20 League will continue on 19th May, 2024 when Bengaluru will be locking horns against Chennai in match number 68 of this season. This game holds significant importance in the league as it will confirm one team's place in the playoffs. The first ball will be at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye.

Nicholas Pooran is the Player of the Match for his knock of 75 runs off just 29 balls. He says he had to do his job and it was good. He says that he likes batting in powerplay as well but he likes to bat in any order and that's his strength. He adds that he is blessed with batting and he enjoys batting. Mentions that the World Cup is near and they will be looking forward to that and playing together.

KL Rahul, the skipper of Lucknow, says that they are very disappointed, as at the beginning of the season, it felt like they had all bases covered and a few injuries happened to such guys that it really hurt the team and the batters couldn't come together often. He mentions that he is happy for the Indian pacers, that the franchise has invested a lot of time and energy, and that the likes of Mayank Yadav and Yudhvir Singh were sent to South Africa for training as well. He recognizes that he isn't sure about opening in T20 cricket and it is a season where he has learned a lot about his batting and what the team wants. On Nicholas Pooran, he says that ideally they would want him to bat higher but given the set-up of the team, Pooran needed to be slightly down the order as Marcus Stoinis was batting at number 3.

Krunal Pandya is in for a chat. He says that it was a tough season but it feels good to end with a win. Adds that fielding is more related to fitness and the boundary save felt good. Ends by saying that it would have been great to get a shot in the playoffs but he is happy to finish on a high.

Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai, says that the season has been quite difficult as they didn't play quality cricket. Adds that it is a professional world and as professionals, you need to come out and give it your best but as a group, they weren't able to play their best cricket. Mentions that it is difficult to make out what went wrong in this game as it has been a similar story throughout the season and will now look forward to the next season.

Presentations coming up...

Earlier in the game, Lucknow set a challenging target of 214 runs, propelled by impressive batting displays from Nicholas Pooran, who scored 75 runs off just 29 deliveries, as well as notable contributions from KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya, and Ayush Badoni. Mumbai began their innings with the ball strongly but encountered difficulties in the later stages, as Arjun Tendulkar was dealing with an injury and had to walk off the pitch. Some effective bowling performances from Nuwan Thushara and Piyush Chawla helped them, as both picked three wickets each. The rest of the bowlers remained wicketless.

Lucknow displayed a commendable performance with the ball in hand. Despite a shaky start, they managed to maintain their composure and continuously build on their momentum throughout the game. Their bowlers got the breakthrough late in the game but once they did, they kept on building on it. Ravi Bishnoi stood out with two crucial wickets, while Naveen-ul-Haq, Mohsin Khan, and Krunal Pandya also made significant contributions by picking up one wicket each.

A tough season for Mumbai as they end at the bottom of the points table! They were off to a promising start as their openers, Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis, forged a solid partnership. However, the momentum shifted when Brevis departed after contributing 23 runs. Despite this setback, Rohit Sharma continued to display exceptional form, anchoring the innings with aggressive strokeplay. Mumbai faced another blow as Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed without scoring. Rohit Sharma's departure in the 11th over marked a turning point, leading to wickets falling in quick succession. Naman Dhir and Ishan Kishan tried their bit in the end but the required rate was way too high and yet, Dhir got them a lot closer than expected.

Pitched up full and in the slot around off, Naman Dhir stays deep in the crease and lofts it down to long off where Krunal leaps up over his shoulder and grabs the ball with his left hand and manages to throw it back in time. The hang time on that was pretty ridiculous and Krunal even managed to throw the ball back to Naveen-ul-Haq who took off the bails and almost got a run out. The replqys show that Dhir just grounded his bat in time.

Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The Lucknow players can be seen in a huddle with skipper KL Rahul trying to pump up his players. As expected, it will be Rohit Sharma coming in as the Impact Player for Mumbai and will open the innings alongside Dewald Brevis which is a bit of a surprise. Sharma replaces Nuwan Thushara in the lineup. Also, Naveen-ul-Haq comes in as the Impact Player for Lucknow replacing Ayush Badoni. Arshad Khan has been handed the new ball and is raring to go. Let's play...

... The Run Chase ...

Right then, 215 for Mumbai to get which, generally, at the Wankhede is chasable but the wicket hasn't quite been the belter it regularly is in this season. The hosts have their task cut out and Lucknow will be the happier side at the moment but will be aware that it isn't easy defending on this ground. Join us in a bit as the exciting run chase isn't far away.

The star with the bat for Lucknow, Nicholas Pooran is down for a chat. Pooran says that he has been in similar situations over the years as he has played a lot of franchise cricket and is lucky to have the skills and wants to train and use those skills to the max. Adds that he always wants to be the best version of himself and reckons that there is not much you can tell the bowlers to focus on. Ends by saying that he wants the total to be enough.

Lucknow will be happy with that total but will be a bit displeased as they could have easily got 15-20 more runs. It was a fairly sedate start with the bat but Marcus Stoinis tried his best to up the ante before getting out. It was Nicholas Pooran who came in as a breath of fresh air and just hit everyone out of the mark eventually getting out on 75 off just 29 balls. KL Rahul played the anchor role well but couldn't take control after Pooran's wicket and Lucknow lost three wickets in a row. The pair of Krunal Pandya and Ayush Badoni did finish with a flourish and a few big blows from the latter took the final score to 214 runs.

Phew! That was some end to the first innings and it really was a topsy-turvy first half. The home side, Mumbai began strongly by picking an early wicket and managed to keep things quiet in the Powerplay. There was some counterattack but they managed to stay on top at the halfway mark of the innings. This changed though as they were taken aback by a sensational knock from Nicholas Pooran and once Arjun Tendulkar left the field injured, they looked a bowler down. However, Nuwan Thushara came back in and turned the game on its head by picking up a couple of wickets and Piyush Chawla too got a vital wicket at the death but they did end up conceding a huge total which won't be easy to chase.

Lovely shape on that one! Full and straight at the stumps, getting it to swing away late and KL Rahul watchfully plays it out on the off side.

We are all set for the game to begin! The umpires have made their way out in the middle. Mumbai side is seen in a huddle, near the ropes. Devdutt Padikkal and KL Rahul open with their blades for Lucknow. Nuwan Thushara has the new ball in hand and will begin the proceedings. Let's play...

The Lucknow skipper, KL Rahul starts by saying that Quinton de Kock misses out and Devdutt Padikkal and Matt Henry come in as the major changes. Adds that historically it has been a good batting wicket and in the last couple of games, it has had something for the bowlers and need to be watchful early on. Mentions that they started off well and with a couple of weeks left, they were in a good position to make it through to the playoffs but given the nature of the competition, it all turned on its head and will now look to finish on a high.

Hardik Pandya, the skipper of Mumbai, says that they will bowl first, as chasing in Wankhede is better. He says that it is about playing for pride today and playing good cricket will be appreciated. He adds that they will try to do what is right and not think much. He ends by mentioning the changes on their side with Jasprit Bumrah rested and Tilak Varma injured and Arjun Tendulkar coming in.

Impact Subs nominated by Lucknow - Naveen-ul-Haq, Ashton Turner, M. Siddharth, Prerak Mankad, Krishnappa Gowtham.

Lucknow (Playing XI) - KL Rahul (C/WK), Devdutt Padikkal (In for Quinton de Kock), Marcus Stoinis, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni (In for Yudhvir Singh), Krunal Pandya, Arshad Khan, Matt Henry (In for Naveen-ul-Haq), Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan.

TOSS - The final toss of the season at Wankhede and the flip of the coin lands in favor of the home skipper. Mumbai decide to BOWL first.

Lucknow on the other hand can still get to 14 points which might be the number for the fourth placed team but with their net run rate being in the mud, any result in tomorrow's game between Bengaluru and Chennai would see Lucknow knocked out. They will be gutted as they were amongst the front runners for a playoffs berth midway through the season but will now look to finish with a consolation win. Right then, which side will be able to sign off on a high? We shall find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

Mumbai were on a bit of a downward slope in the last two seasons and decided to bring back Hardik Pandya and handed him the captaincy given how well he had led Gujarat but unfortunately, Mumbai's fortune didn't change and they find themselves with just 4 wins from 13 games. A win here and they'll be off last spot for the time being and the home crowd will be expecting a no-holds-barred approach.

Four games remaining, three playoff spots filled and yet, only Kolkata are assured of topping the table. In Match 67 of the 2024 Indian T20 League, two teams who are not quite in contention for that final playoff berth go up against each other in a bid to finish the season on a high. It's Mumbai taking on Lucknow at the Wankhede Stadium and on that note, welcome to the coverage.

... MATCH DAY ...

As the Indian T20 League 2024 approaches its conclusion, the race for the playoffs has become increasingly thrilling, with five teams still competing for the final two spots. Match 67 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai promises to be another exciting encounter, as the home team, Mumbai, faces off against Lucknow one last time this season. While Lucknow will be aiming for a decisive victory to stay in contention for a playoff berth, Mumbai, already eliminated from contention, will look to end their season on a high and play the spoiler derailing Lucknow's plans. Mumbai have not had the best of seasons and were the first team to be eliminated from the competition. However, they will be eager to secure a final win and avoid finishing last on the points table. After a dominating performance against Hyderabad, Mumbai once again failed to maintain their momentum, faltering against Kolkata in a rain-curtailed match reduced to 16 overs per side. The bowlers did exceptionally well to restrict Kolkata's potent batting lineup to a total of 157 runs, which was further bolstered by openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan in the chase. Just when the game seemed within Mumbai's grasp, wickets tumbled, and no batter apart from Tilak Varma and a small little cameo from Naman Dhir could establish themselves at the crease. Despite their efforts to take the game deep, the target proved elusive as wickets continued to fall at the other end. This game epitomized Mumbai's season thus far, and they will be desperate to put their best foot forward and win this final match, which could provide the team with a much-needed morale boost. Lucknow, on the other hand, find their playoff hopes in jeopardy after losing their previous game against Delhi. Now sitting in 7th position with 12 points, a win in this match will only take them to 14 points, meaning they will still need other results to go in their favour to have a chance at qualification. The team is low on confidence, having lost three games in a row, and will be aiming to deliver a strong and dominating performance against Mumbai to improve their net run rate, a crucial factor for their playoff aspirations. The top order must step up and provide a solid foundation, supporting the middle order led by Nicholas Pooran and Krunal Pandya, who have often been tasked with steadying the ship. With a lot at stake, who do you think will emerge victorious in this crucial game? Only time will tell!
