Commentary

Right then, New Zealand have pocketed the series with a game to go and will be eager to inflict the whitewash. As for Sri Lanka, they will be looking to salvage pride and take the momentum into the ODI series with a win. The third and final T20I of the series will take place in Nelson at the Saxton Oval on Thursday, 2nd January. The first ball will be bowled at 12.15 am GMT but as always, you can join us much earlier for the build-up. Until then, wishing you a Happy New Year, and see you soon. Cheers!

The captain of New Zealand, Mitchell Santner says that it was a great performance and he is glad to see everyone stepping up. Appreciates Jacob Duffy for the way we he bowled and for delivering when the team needed it. Feels that it is important to vary the pace as it could get easier for the batters to hit with the wind. Adds that he was basically looking to keep it out of the arc of the batters and keep it as simple as possible. Concludes by saying that it is nice to see the boys experiencing a win in front of the home crowd.

Charith Asalanka, the losing skipper, says that he is disappointed with the results. Feels that the middle order didn’t play well and they could have done better. Adds that it is all about adapting to the conditions in a quick time and New Zealand were brilliant in all departments. Concludes that it was important to finish the game, no matter how you start and he is disappointed with the series loss but will come back stronger in the final one. Mentions about his keeping that he puts in a lot of work day in and day out and it is nice to get the results.

Mitchell Hay is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his quickfire cameo. He says that it feels nice to contribute to the team's win. Shares that he looked to give himself some time before going for the big shots. Mentions that he is happy to get the series win. States that it feels good to play in front of the home crowd. Adds that he has his family here as well.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Charith Asalanka won the second toss in a row and opted to bowl first. Sri Lanka struck early before Mark Chapman and Tim Robinson helped the Kiwis build a platform. Once that stand was broken, the tourists chipped away at regular intervals but Mitchell Hay put his hand up to give the batting side the desired finish. His 19-ball 41 helped the Kiwis finish with 186. Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 28 from his 4 overs. The death bowling was once again a concern for Sri Lanka, conceding 43 runs from the last 3 overs.

It was a proper arm wrestle during Sri Lanka’s chase. The Asian side mirrored the Kiwis’ effort to build a solid platform for the second half of the innings by keeping wickets in hand. Pathum Nissanka’s dismissal in the 10th over forced Kusal Perera to take charge and accelerate, given he had already spent some time at the crease. While Sri Lanka showed glimpses of gaining momentum, every time they seemed to turn a corner, New Zealand struck back to regain control. The visitors needed Perera to make his start count and take the team over the line, as new batters found it difficult to settle and score quickly. However, his dismissal proved pivotal, allowing the Kiwis to tighten the screws and close out the game convincingly.

Signed, sealed, and delivered! Mitchell Santner has secured his first series win in his debut assignment as the full-time white-ball captain of New Zealand. It all went downhill for Sri Lanka rather quickly from the position where they needed 60 runs from the last 5 overs with 7 wickets in hand. The tourists lost 7 wickets for just 14 runs to hand the Kiwis a convincing 45-run win.

19.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! There goes the final wicket. This one is bowled full and outside off, much slower through the air, from the back of the hand. Binura Fernando looks to loft it over cover, off the front foot but goes through his shot early. It takes the outer half of the bat and loops up towards short third man where Jacob Duffy moves smartly towards his right to complete that catch in the end. Sri Lanka are all out for 141. New Zealand win by 45 runs to seal the series.

OUT! CAUGHT! Another one falls. Bowled full and way wide outside off, almost on the tramline. Opts to bowl an off-cutter again, into the pitch, much fuller. Maheesh Theekshana lines himself up to launch it over the long off fence but only manages to sky this one up towards Mitchell Santner who readies himself near the long off fence and completes a regulation catch.

Then comes back in and throws the ball to the non-striker's end and keeps the batters down to just a single.

OUT! CAUGHT AT DEEP SQUARE LEG! Santner gets the better of his counterpart! Mitchell Santner gives the air to the full ball, around middle, from over the wicket, turning in. Commentary

We are all set for Sri Lanka's reply. Mitchell Santner and Co. break from the huddle to take their respective positions in the field. It will be Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis to open the innings for Sri Lanka. Matt Henry is all set to go. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Now the big question is whether Sri Lanka can chase this target to level the series or if New Zealand will defend it to seal the series victory. Sri Lanka have the firepower to pull it off, but it will come down to how well they handle the pressure in the crucial moments. The stage is set for an exciting chase, so, stay tuned.

Mark Chapman is down for a quick chat. He starts by saying that the wicket is a bit slow compared to the previous game. Since it is a used surface. It is difficult to hit towards the leg side. Further adds that they would still have to bowl well and make the Sri Lankan batters hit into the wind. Tells that a couple of new boys are enjoying playing on familiar tracks here. Mentions that they are looking to just trust the process and go out there and execute plans.

Mark Chapman did both boundary-hitting and smart strike rotation in his innings to ensure the momentum stayed alive during the middle overs. Mitchell Hay finished the innings on high for his team by making a quick-fire 41 in just 19 balls with 2 sixes and 4 fours. For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga was the star with the ball, claiming two important wickets. Matheesha Pathirana and Nuwan Thushara also chipped in a wicket each, helping Sri Lanka keep the pressure on.

New Zealand get the late flourish, thanks to Mitchell Hay. 43 runs came off the last 3 overs and that has allowed the hosts to end up with 186 on the board. New Zealand didn’t have the best start, losing Rachin Ravindra early in the third over. However, Tim Robinson and Mark Chapman steadied the innings with a solid 69-run partnership. Robinson fell while trying to up the ante, and Glenn Phillips came in with a brief but impactful cameo, scoring 23 runs quickly before getting out.

In the air...but safe. A couple of runs to end the innings. Slower and fuller, on off, Hay looks to go back over the bowler's head but goes through his shot early. Gets skied but falls well in front of the rushing long on fielder. 16 runs off the over. New Zealand finish with 186!

19.54

FOUR! Innovative and effective! Full and wide on off, Mitchell Hay walks across his stumps nice and early. Succeeds in scooping it over short fine leg for a boundary.

19.42

Low full toss, on middle and leg, Mitchell Hay gets behind the line and lofts it to the left of long on for a couple of runs.

19.41wd

19.30

19.24

FOUR! Powered away! On a back of a length, angling across, Hay hangs back and slaps it up and over extra cover for a boundary.

19.13

Sloppy stuff from Sri Lanka! Banged in short, on off, Michael Bracewell tries to slap it on the off side. Gets it off the toe end of the bat and gets it past the bowler towards long off. The throw comes in from the deep and it hits the stumps at the bowling end. It rolls beside the pitch on the leg side and the batters sneak in an overthrow. Fernando is caught watching the two batters run and does not get to the ball himself, allowing the two batters to take another run. What should have been just a single has ended up going for three.

Fernando gets across to his right quickly and picks the ball up with his right hand. Turns around and scores a direct hit at the bowling end, catching Mitchell short of his crease. A big wicket for Sri Lanka.

17.21

Had the throw hit, Hay was gone! Another one that is pushed across the batter, Hay walks way far across his stumps to scoop it over short fine leg.

PITCH REPORT - Frankie Mackay is near the deck. She informs that it’s not quite as warm as the first game. There’s a strong breeze blowing across the ground, and the wind will definitely be a big factor, with both batters and bowlers needing to factor it in. Craig McMillan joins her and says that the pitch has a slight tinge of green but carries a brownish look, with a consistent grass covering. He adds that it’s the kind of surface that keeps everyone involved throughout the game.

Zakary Foulkes is in for a chat. He mentions that his main weapon is the in-swinger and that he could hopefully get a few to swing tonight. Tells that he is enjoying the pressure and bowling alongside Matt Henry and he is guiding him through it.

The captain of New Zealand, Mitchell Santner says that this looks like a pretty good wicket but feels that it might hold up a touch. Mentions that the second half of both innings went well for them. Appreciates Foulkes for the way he fought back after a tough first couple of overs. Informs that they are unchanged for this game.

The captain of Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka says that the pitch looks good and will look to execute similar things from the last game here as well. Mentions that they had a lot of positives from the last game but no balls are something they want to cut down. Further mentions that he hopes the middle order including himself, can step up. Informs that they have made one change with Avishka Fernando coming in for Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Kusal Perera, Avishka Fernando (In for Bhanuka Rajapaksa), Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka (C), Wanindu Hasaranga, Binura Fernando, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara.

New Zealand (Unchanged Playing XI) - Tim Robinson, Rachin Ravindra, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Hay (WK), Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (C), Zakary Foulkes, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy.

TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the toss and they will BOWL first.

On the other hand, New Zealand can draw confidence from the heroics of Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell, who rescued the team in a dire situation. However, their struggles against spin were apparent, and their Powerplay bowling left much to be desired. Sri Lanka have never won a T20I series on New Zealand soil, and tonight presents a golden opportunity to keep their hopes alive of breaking that long-standing hoodoo. Can they rise to the occasion and level the series, or will New Zealand seal the series? Stick around for the toss and team news.

Sri Lanka will be eager for a quick rebound after letting the first game slip away from a commanding position. The short turnaround between matches could work in their favour, allowing them less time to brood over the loss. Their death bowling, which faltered at a critical juncture, will need improvement, and their batting lineup, aside from the openers, must show greater composure under pressure.

Hello and a warm welcome, folks! It's time for Round 2 in Mount Maunganui as the T20I series rolls on. The opening game set the stage with high drama, as New Zealand snatched a thrilling victory from the jaws of defeat. Sri Lanka, remarkably, found themselves collapsing despite needing just 53 runs from the final 7 overs with all 10 wickets in hand.

... MATCH DAY ...

What a nail-biter it was to kick off the T20I series, with New Zealand just edging past Sri Lanka in a dramatic clash! The Kiwis showcased grit and determination, both with the bat and ball, to secure a thrilling win. Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell were the saviors with brilliant fifties, rescuing their team from a precarious situation. However, the top-order collapse remains a concern, and the likes of Tim Robinson and Rachin Ravindra will need to step up and deliver those explosive starts. Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips, known for their firepower, must also find their rhythm soon to strengthen the middle order. The bowlers had their moments too. While the Sri Lankan openers initially ran riot, Jacob Duffy produced a game-changing spell that turned the tide in New Zealand's favor. Supported brilliantly by Matt Henry and Zakary Foulkes, the trio ensured the Kiwis closed out the game. Skipper Mitchell Santner and Bracewell, with their all-round capabilities, add invaluable depth and experience to this side. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be kicking themselves for letting this one slip away. Chasing 173, their openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis put on a masterclass, smashing 121 runs for the first wicket. But what followed was a disappointing collapse, with the middle order failing to capitalize. Players like Kamindu Mendis, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Charith Asalanka will need to rise to the occasion, as they possess the talent to turn games around. On the bowling front, Sri Lanka looks strong with their pace trio of Binura Fernando, Matheesha Pathirana , and Nuwan Thushara, who bring diverse skill sets. The spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana have already troubled the Kiwi batters and could have more tricks up their sleeves. Can the Lankans bounce back and level the series? Or will the Blackcaps seal the deal with a game to spare? The next encounter promises to be a cracker!
