Commentary
Welcome back for New Zealand's response, folks! The two umpires are out to the middle and the entire Sri Lankan team can be seen in a team-huddle near the ropes before they spread out to the field. The Kiwi opening pair of Rachin Ravindra and Tim Robinson walk out to the crease. It will be Chamindu Wickramasinghe to kick off the run chase with the new ball.
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Well then, the Kiwis have a huge challenging task cut out for them with 219 to chase. It is not going to be an easy one for the hosts. Anything that had pace was smashed out of the park and the Lankans do have a bowling attack which is known for its pace variations as well. It is going to be a delicious run chase on the other side. Stay tuned.
The Kiwis remained under constant pressure as Kusal Perera's swashbuckling batting display powered him to his maiden T20I century. The hosts found no respite while Perera was at the crease. However, once two new batters came in, New Zealand managed to regain some control, restricting Sri Lanka to just 12 runs in the final two overs through some good death bowling by Duffy and Mitchell.
But it was in the mid-overs when Sri Lanka consolidated the start they got. The batters quickly cashed on anything that was served outside off with pace and also survived a couple of dropped catches to add to their misery. Kusal Perera reached his half-century during this period, where most overs yielded runs in excess and around 9 rpo. The acceleration was particularly evident between overs 10 and 16, as they amassed 84 runs in this crucial phase without losing a single wicket. Kusal Perera and Charith Asalanka constructed a centurion partnership on the back of some brilliant strokes played by the two southpaws.
In the early overs, the new ball offered considerable assistance to the pace bowlers through movement off the seam and swing. Santner made an immediate impact upon introducing himself into the attack, striking in his first over. He tried to stem the run flow by constant shuffling in the bowling. However, Kusal Perera showed positive intent from the outset, scoring freely. With the ball softening, Perera and Avishka began taking calculated risks against the spinners. Although the spin duo created several half-chances, the third-wicket stand continued to grow, only before Duffy was reintroduced and removed the latter.
A clinical batting performance by Sri Lanka, despite those last two quiet overs in the backend. But, with 218 on the board, the Lankans would be quite delighted as the batters have done their job sincerely. Despite conditions delaying the start due to a wet outfield, play eventually commenced beneath cloudy skies. The batting surface proved a bit challenging initially, with the New Zealand bowlers exploiting the conditions well in the first few overs. While Sri Lanka's opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis managed to build a good foundation, their attempts to accelerate the scoring rate led to both wickets falling in quick succession.

FOUR! On a length wide outside off, Chamindu Wickramasinghe shimmies down the track and swings wild. The ball was darted outside off and Chamindu Wickramasinghe could only manage an outside edge to it. Luckily for CW the ball flies past the right of short third and into the fence for four. Sri Lanka post a huge total of 218 on board.
Another dot as Chamindu Wickramasinghe persists to play the scoop but misses again.

FOUR! A boundary to end the 19th. Full and wide outside off, Bhanuka Rajapaksa jumps down the track and swings. Gets it off the outside, lands behind backward point and the ball races away to the fence for four.

Short and wide outside off, Chamindu Wickramasinghe slaps this to deep cover for one.
Chamindu Wickramasinghe walks in at number 7.
OUT! IN THE AIR AND CAUGHT! The centurion, Kusal Perera departs. This is a slower one, on a short length, and wide outside off, Kusal Perera looks to hit this over point. But gets no timing on that. The ball slices off his bat and hangs high over Rachin Ravindra at point. Rachin walks sideways and holds onto this one. Perera perishes after racking up 101 at a strike rate of nearly 220.
Good length on off, Kusal Perera thumps this into the surface and back to the bowler for no run.
On a length around off, Bhanuka Rajapaksa guides this towards backward point for a quick single.

SIX! CENTURY FOR Kusal Perera. A biggie over cover to bring up his ton. Pitched-up on off, Kusal Perera opens up the off side and lofts this up and over cover for six. This is how good Kusal Perera has been today. The ball has just flown off his bat. That drop early on has costed the Kiwis big time.
SIX! The ball is flying off KP's bat and it is landing into the stands mostly. Short-pitched around middle and leg, Kusal Perera pulls this and gets enough power behind this to take it over the fence for six more. KP moves to 95.
On a length around off, Kusal Perera smashes this towards long on for a couple.
SIX! AWAY SHE GOES FOR SIX! Good length on middle and leg, Kusal Perera clears his front leg, opens up the off side but the ball was bowled closer to the pads and he flicks this right off the middle of his bat and into the stands towards deep mid-wicket for six.
On a length angling away on off, Kusal Perera clears the front leg and swings but misses.
WIDE! Good length, way too wide outside off, Kusal Perera misses on the bat swing. Wided.

Commentary
Mitchell Santner now collects the trophy gracefully and heads towards his teammates who await their skipper behind the winner's board. The entire New Zealand squad now poses for the commemorative photographs. The Kiwis have kicked off men's international cricketing calendar in 2025 with a victory. And that wraps up a thrilling three-match T20I series, with New Zealand emerging as deserving 2-1 winners. The focus now shifts to the 50-over format as both teams gear up for an intriguing three-match ODI series. The action moves to Basin Reserve, Wellington for the series opener on Sunday, January 5th, with the first delivery scheduled for 10 pm GMT on the previous day. Until we meet again, goodbye and take care!
The captain of Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka says that it was a good win for them and throughout the series, they have played some good cricket but couldn't cross the line. On being asked about bringing himself to bowl, he says that he had the experience to bowl in home conditions, but didn't bowled a lot overseas. Also says that they had to try since they were a bowler short. About their approach for the ODI series, Asalanka mentions that it is a momentum shift for them with this win and they would be trying hard to adapt to the situation. Also congratulates their opponents and says that New Zealand has played fantastic cricket and he hopes that Sri Lanka will do better in the ODIs. On Perera's century, he says that he has no words to describe that knock and ends up saying that it is only after 2011 or so that they have got a T20I century, so it is really special for the team.
The captain of New Zealand, Mitchell Santner is up for a quick chat. He says the surface was tough on the bowlers and Sri Lanka did better. Mentions that it is great to see such a massive turnup from the crowd. Reckons that there are a lot of positives and despite a defeat in this contest they did not do much wrong here.
Jacob Duffy is adjudged as the PLAYER OF THE SERIES for his impactful bowling performances throughout this T20I series. He says that it is a proud moment to represent the country and play in front of this fantastic crowd. Mentions that the ball did come out his hand well throughout the series and the backing from the management and the skipper has helped him a lot.
Kusal Perera is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his explosive knock of 101 runs off just 46 deliveries. He says that it's a pleasure whenever you score a hundred for your country. Says that when he went to bat, he copped a blow on the helmet and wasn't expecting that, but it kind of gave him a wake-up call. Mentions that normally subcontinent tracks are effective for spinners but fast bowlers dominate in this part of the world. Adds that they got starts in the last two matches but couldn't finish the game. Also mentions that their coach said once you get the start, try and finish the game and ends by saying that's what he tried to do in this game.
... THE PRESENTATION CEREMONY ...
Earlier, Sri Lankan batters went on a rampage, with Kusal Perera leading the charge with his maiden T20I century. The visitors started cautiously but soon shifted gears, taking advantage of some wayward bowling and a poor fielding effort from the Kiwis. Perera's 101 was the highlight of the innings, with Charith Asalanka providing valuable support with a 46-run knock. Mendis, Avishka, and Pathum Nissanka got starts but couldn't carry on for long. The New Zealand bowling unit had an off-day, serving up too many 'hit-me' deliveries that the Sri Lankan batters gleefully accepted. Each of the Kiwi bowlers, including Duffy, Henry, Foulkes, Santner, and Mitchell, managed to take only one wicket each.
The Sri Lankan bowlers had a shaky start, with both spinners going for plenty in their initial spells. However, Charith Asalanka bowled exceptionally well, taking 3 wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga took 2 wickets in the final over of his spell while Binura Fernando and Nuwan Thushara also chipped in with a wicket each.
New Zealand's chase of a massive total got off to a flying start, with the opening pair adding 81 runs for the first wicket. The Kiwi openers were aggressive in the Powerplay, scoring 63 runs off the first 6 overs. However, the Kiwis lost their way in the middle phase, losing wickets in quick succession. Despite a valiant effort from Daryl Mitchell, who took the attack to Charith Asalanka in the 15th over, the Sri Lankan bowlers regained control and closed out the game. Rachin Ravindra top-scored for the Kiwis with 69, while Daryl Mitchell and Robinson played useful knocks, but ultimately, it was not enough.
Sri Lanka secured a thrilling 7-run victory over New Zealand in the third T20I, but it is the Kiwis that take the silverware with a 2-1 series win.

That's it! SRI LANKA WIN! Binura does the job for the tourists! A gentle-paced delivery, on a shortish length, outside off, Mitchell Santner gets beaten by the pace-off delivery and mistimes his pull shot in the air. It lands in the safe zone behind mid-wicket and they cross for a single.

Sri Lanka have been penalized as they couldn't complete these 20 overs in time. Meaning, an extra fielder will have to be stationed inside the inner ring, with only 4 permitted to be outside the circle. Binura Fernando to wrap things off in the final over.

Hence, gets no proper timing on it and a leading edge travels straight over the bowler and towards Chamindu Wickramasinghe at long off for a regulation catch to his right. This is a tossed-up delivery, drifting around off, Michael Bracewell goes for the cover drive, and smacks it too hard, but ends up hitting this a bit uppish and flat straight towards Charith Asalanka. OUT! IN THE AIR AND CAUGHT EASILY! How often have we seen a break in play, resulting in the fall of a wicket. Another scalp for Charith Asalanka and he continues to create impact with the ball. The ploy to bowl away from the hitting arc of Glenn has worked for the visitors. Smidge full in length, and angling away on off, Glenn Phillips backs away to create some room for himself and expands his arms to reach at it, goes with the bat swing and doesn't try to keep it along the ground. He airs it, gets no timing and distance on it and goes only as far as Pathum Nissanka in the deep for a simple catch.
Short of a length angling into the stumps, Rachin Ravindra moves awya and pulls this flat towards deep mid-wicket for one.
WIDE! Angling away down the leg, Rachin Ravindra looks to sweep but misses. Kusal Mendis collects this behind the stumps and shows some excitement but after a discussion with Charith Asalanka they decide not to go upstairs. Wided.
Full and going away with the arm, Glenn Phillips smashes this towards deep point for one.
WIDE! Comes round the wicket and darts one way outside off. Glenn Phillips shoulders arms it. Wided.
DRINKS! What a contest we have at our helm! It hangs right in the balance at the moment and if we take a magnified look at it, the Kiwis are slightly ahead of the Sri Lankans at this stage. Rachin Ravindra finally got into the groove after two underwhelming performances and has notched up his fifty. He got brilliant support from Tim Robinson at the other end, who looked aggressive as well. With 111 more required off the last 10 overs, Sri Lanka still have a lot of runs to defend and while chasing, especially such a mammoth total, the run rate pressure always remains. With well-settled Rachin Ravindra at the crease, and a good bit of batting yet to come, New Zealand will fancy their chances. A couple of more quick wickets from here will bring Sri Lanka ahead in the contest. Will the break in play bring some respite for the tourists? Which way will it tilt? Let's find out. Here's Asalanka after the hydration break.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! As soon as he hit it, Chapman knew that he was in trouble and New Zealand have lost two wickets now! Charith Asalanka and the Sri Lankans are all pumped up as they get two wickets in quick intervals. A quicker one from Asalanka, on middle and full in length, with a bit of an in-drift on it. Mark Chapman dances down the track and looks to hit it across and aerially behind deep mid-wicket. But he ends up playing it a bit too close to the body and hence, doesn't get the requisite distance and height on that one. It goes flat and right into the hands of Pathum Nissanka stationed at deep mid-wicket.

DRINKS! Well, it has been quite a balanced game so far. New Zealand has managed to get three wickets but the scoring rate has equally remained in excess or around 9 runs per over. The Sri Lanka top order did get some starts but they were prevented from building those into something substantial due to constant reshuffling in bowling changes by Santner. We are almost at the halfway stage of the first innings and the Sri Lankan middle order will now be under examination to prove itself. While New Zealand would like to get some more wickets quickly to exert more pressure on the tourists. Charith Asalanka walks out to the middle at number 5 for Sri Lanka.
OUT! An excellent review from the Kiwi skipper and Avishka Fernando departs. Good length, drifting down the leg, Avishka Fernando goes for the slog towards deep mid-wicket but gets beaten. The ball goes on and thumps into Avishka Fernando's back pad. A good enough appeal from the Kiwis but the umpire is unmoved. Mitchell Santner goes upstairs and the Ball Tracker shows all reds. The on-field umpire is asking to change his decision of not to to OUT.

Well then, all in preparedness for the commencement of the third and final T20I. A sell-out crowd at the Saxton Oval, Nelson as well. Also, pleasing scenes as the sun is peeking out of the clouds. There's a fair share of thick cloud cover at one end, but, for the bare minimum, it is least threatening for the match to start now. The two umpires walk out to the middle, and the New Zealand players also scatter out to the field. Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka are the two Sri Lankan openers who walk out to the crease. It will be Matt Henry to kick off the proceedings with the new ball. All players and the crowd are requested to observe a minute of silence as a tribute to the passing away of Senior Sergeant, Lyn Fleming with the personnel from the Nelson police force also present at the boundary side. Well then, all in readiness. Off we go...

Well, it rained pretty heavily for a couple of days in Central New Zealand, but according to the latest reports, the rain Gods have been kind today. It is not raining as of now, but the outfield is still not favorable and ready enough for the play to commence. Hence, the toss has been OFFICIALLY DELAYED due to wet outfield!
The Saxton Oval, with its traditionally batting-friendly surface, could provide the perfect stage for a competitive finale to this T20I series. The relatively shorter boundaries might also encourage both teams to play more attacking cricket, setting up what promises to be an entertaining encounter. Stay tuned as the toss and the team updates are up next.
Sri Lanka's struggles in run chases have highlighted concerns about their batting tempo as they have lost both matches while chasing the target. A key issue has been the recent quiet form of promising youngster Kamindu Mendis, whose performance is crucial for strengthening their middle order. Meanwhile, New Zealand has benefited from Mitch Hay's stability in the lower middle order, though they're still waiting for Rachin Ravindra to find his rhythm at the top of the batting lineup.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are in a position where pride is at stake. Facing the prospect of a clean sweep on New Zealand soil, they'll be desperate to salvage something from this series before the format switches to ODIs. While the batters have displayed flashes of brilliance, especially Pathum Nissanka who leads the run-charts and is the only one to cross triple figures, by being the only of the batters to have made meaningful contributions. It is in the bowling department where the Lankans have found themselves in a bit of a pickle. The likes of Matheesha Pathirana have been really underwhelming with the spin department largely dependent on Maheesh Theekshana. The tourists will be aiming to put on a much more spirited performance to save their pride.
Under Mitchell Santner's astute leadership, this relatively inexperienced New Zealand side has shown remarkable composure and skill. After a somewhat tentative start in the series opener, the Blackcaps' top order has found its rhythm, with Daryl Mitchell particularly impressive in anchoring the middle order and providing crucial momentum in the death overs. The bowling unit has been equally impressive, with captain Santner leading by example in the spin department. Jacob Duffy has been a revelation with the ball, maintaining exceptional economy rates while consistently picking up wickets. His disciplined line and length have given the Sri Lankan batters precious little to work with.
As the cricket caravan rolls south from Mount Maunganui to Nelson's picturesque Saxton Oval, New Zealand find themselves in an enviable position with an unassailable 2-0 lead in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. On that note, we welcome you all to our coverage of this third and final T20I, before the action shifts to Wellington for the ODI leg of the tour. This also marks the first men's international match of 2025.
... MATCH DAY ...
The caravan now moves to Nelson for the third and final T20I of the series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. With the series already decided, New Zealand head into this contest with an unassailable 2-0 lead, thanks to back-to-back wins in Mount Maunganui. In the second T20I, New Zealand posted a commanding total of 186, a target that proved insurmountable for Sri Lanka. The visitors faltered in their chase, collapsing dramatically to lose 7 wickets for just 14 runs and being bowled out for 141. While the top three, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, and Kusal Perera, have shown promise, the middle and lower order are yet to make meaningful contributions. Players like Charith Asalanka, Avishka Fernando, and Kamindu Mendis will be keen to find form and carry momentum into the ODI series. On the bowling front, Sri Lanka’s death bowling remains a significant concern with Wanindu Hasaranga being a shining light, delivering standout performances in both games. For New Zealand, Jacob Duffy has stood out, consistently delivering crucial breakthroughs whenever called upon. He has been well-supported by the rest of the attack. On the batting front, it was a collective effort from the Kiwis in the previous encounter. However, Rachin Ravindra has yet to hit his stride with the bat and will look to find form ahead of the ODI leg. With the series secured, New Zealand might take this opportunity to give game time to players who haven’t featured yet. As both Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy are part of the ODI squad, one of them could be rested to ensure they remain fresh and ready for the upcoming challenges. Will the Kiwis complete a dominant whitewash, or can Sri Lanka salvage some pride and finish the series on a high note? We shall find out.
