The ploy to bowl away from the hitting arc of Glenn has worked for the visitors. Smidge full in length, and angling away on off, Glenn Phillips backs away to create some room for himself and expands his arms to reach at it, goes with the bat swing and doesn't try to keep it along the ground. He airs it, gets no timing and distance on it and goes only as far as Pathum Nissanka in the deep for a simple catch.

DRINKS! What a contest we have at our helm! It hangs right in the balance at the moment and if we take a magnified look at it, the Kiwis are slightly ahead of the Sri Lankans at this stage. Rachin Ravindra finally got into the groove after two underwhelming performances and has notched up his fifty. He got brilliant support from Tim Robinson at the other end, who looked aggressive as well. With 111 more required off the last 10 overs, Sri Lanka still have a lot of runs to defend and while chasing, especially such a mammoth total, the run rate pressure always remains. With well-settled Rachin Ravindra at the crease, and a good bit of batting yet to come, New Zealand will fancy their chances. Charith Asalanka and the Sri Lankans are all pumped up as they get two wickets in quick intervals. A quicker one from Asalanka, on middle and full in length, with a bit of an in-drift on it. Mark Chapman dances down the track and looks to hit it across and aerially behind deep mid-wicket. But he ends up playing it a bit too close to the body and hence, doesn't get the requisite distance and height on that one. Does not get his bat properly under it and ends up slicing it over backward point. The ball sails right under the throat of the fielder in the deep. Kamindu Mendis, the substitute fielder takes a comfortable catch. A quickfire knock from the right-hander comes to an end.

There's a fair share of thick cloud cover at one end, but, for the bare minimum, it is least threatening for the match to start now. The two umpires walk out to the middle, and the New Zealand players also scatter out to the field. Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka are the two Sri Lankan openers who walk out to the crease. It will be Matt Henry to kick off the proceedings with the new ball. Informs that they have two changes in the side, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Chamindu Wickramasinghe come in the side. Also mentions that Matheesha Pathirana and Kamindu Mendis are out.

Mitchell Santner, the skipper of New Zealand says that due to overcast conditions, it is better to bowl first. Also says that the pitch has been under the covers for a bit and they want to see if they can make use of it. Adds that it is all about making guys comfortable in their roles. Appreciates the ground staff by saying they have done an excellent job. Informs that they are going unchanged and want to give young guys more opportunities.

UPDATE - 5.41 am IST (12.11 am GMT) - Positive news! We have an official word, folks! The toss will take place at 5.45 am IST (12.15 am GMT) and the first ball will be bowled at 6.15 am IST (12.45 am GMT). Which is, around 30 minutes from now. Fingers crossed for the weather to remain the same or get more brightened up as the day progresses.

UPDATE - 5.33 am IST (12.03 am GMT) - The two umpires are out and they are inspecting the playing conditions out there. It is overcast, but fortunately, it is a bit windy as well, which might keep the rain away. Also, the players from both camps are carrying out their pre-match drills and warm-ups. The two officiating umpires are now having a detailed discussion with the fourth umpire. We might have an official start time pretty soon. Let's hope for the best. Stay tuned.

UPDATE - 5.28 am IST (11.58 pm GMT, the previous day) - Not an official word, but according to the Blackcaps' social media posts, there might be an inspection by the umpires at 5.30 am IST (12 am GMT). Well, it rained pretty heavily for a couple of days in Central New Zealand, but according to the latest reports, the rain Gods have been kind today. It is not raining as of now, but the outfield is still not favorable and ready enough for the play to commence. Hence, the toss has been OFFICIALLY DELAYED due to wet outfield!

The Saxton Oval, with its traditionally batting-friendly surface, could provide the perfect stage for a competitive finale to this T20I series. The relatively shorter boundaries might also encourage both teams to play more attacking cricket, setting up what promises to be an entertaining encounter. Sri Lanka's struggles in run chases have highlighted concerns about their batting tempo as they have lost both matches while chasing the target. After a somewhat tentative start in the series opener, the Blackcaps' top order has found its rhythm, with Daryl Mitchell particularly impressive in anchoring the middle order and providing crucial momentum in the death overs. With the series already decided, New Zealand head into this contest with an unassailable 2-0 lead, thanks to back-to-back wins in Mount Maunganui. In the second T20I, New Zealand posted a commanding total of 186, a target that proved insurmountable for Sri Lanka. The visitors faltered in their chase, collapsing dramatically to lose 7 wickets for just 14 runs and being bowled out for 141. While the top three, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, and Kusal Perera, have shown promise, the middle and lower order are yet to make meaningful contributions.
