Commentary

That's a wrap to this one-sided game. The second ODI is on Wednesday, 11th January at 3 pm IST (9.30 am GMT). Do join us in advance for the build-up. Cheers!

Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, says that they utilized the new balls perfectly and credits the fast bowlers. Praises his spinners also for executing the plans. Shares that their attempt was to build partnerships as it was not easy for a new batter. Lauds the batting effort of Mohammad Rizwan. He is happy with the bench strength and tells that he has a lot of options in both the pace and spin departments.

Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, says that they would have liked a few more runs on the board. Calls Pakistan clinical with the ball. Adds that in the second half, there was some assistance for the bowlers as well and there is some learning for his team. Mentions that they needed to build more partnerships and need to do things a little better in all departments. Feels that the toss had an impact but refuses to say that it cost them the game as there was assistance for the bowlers in the second innings as well. Wants his team to learn quickly and move on.

Naseem Shah is the Player of the Match for his brilliant spell of 5 for 57 from his 10 overs. The young speedster says that personal performance only counts when you win the game. Praises the effort of all the players. Shares that it was reversing and he just stuck to the right areas.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

Agha Salman comes up for a quick chat. Says that it was a tricky surface and feels that 280-290 could have been a tough target. Shares that it was turning the same in the second innings but the reverse swing that Pakistan got, New Zealand didn't, maybe due to the dew factor. Adds that it's always important to win the first game of any series and it has set the tone for them.

Earlier, New Zealand's batting didn't get the kind of fluency needed to put a big total on the board. They kept losing wickets at regular wickets, and that robbed them of momentum. Credit to Pakistan for putting up a disciplined display with the ball and their fielding was also quite impressive. A word of praise for Naseem Shah who was brilliant, both at the start and at the backend, and finished with a 5-wicket haul.

As mentioned earlier, Pakistan were at ease during the chase. Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan played handy knocks and the likes of Haris Sohail and Agha Salman also chipped in with useful runs. An easy win in the end and the hosts will be quite pleased.

The only way to win this game for New Zealand was by picking wickets, and they struggled exactly to do that. Kane Williamson's captaincy was quite ordinary as he persisted with his spinners for a longer period even when they were not able to either take wickets or build pressure. Ish Sodhi could have been handy here and was missed. The other Kiwi bowlers tried hard but there was not enough consistency in their execution. Still, Michael Bracewell looked quite effective whenever he came on to bowl. He had a catch dropped (Fakhar Zaman on 39) off his bowling as well.

Clinical victory for Pakistan! It was a well-planned chase from them, and the home team showed how to bat in these conditions. Partnerships are always the key in any batting inning, and the hosts constructed plenty of stands on their way to the target. New Zealand were pretty much flat with their effort, looked undercooked in both departments and were always behind the 8-ball in this game.

SIX! THAT IS IT! Agha Salman finishes things off for Pakistan! Tim Southee bowls this one on a length outside off, Agha Salman clears his front leg and thumps this one down the ground. Clears the long off fence and collects a maximum. Pakistan win by 6 wickets!

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The Kiwi players are on the ground. Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman are the openers for Pakistan. Tim Southee to bowl the first over...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Pakistan have a tricky target in front to overhaul and will need to bat sensibly against an effective New Zealand bowling attack for this surface. Will they chase it down and take a 1-0 lead in the series? We will find out shortly. Back in a bit for the chase...

Usama Mir (10-0-42-2) comes up for a chat. The debutant says that he is happy with the performance and thanks the Almighty. Tells that it's like a dream come true to dismiss Kane Williamson for his first international wicket. Feels that they will chase down the target easily.

Having opted to bowl first, the onus was on the Pakistan bowlers to step up and make early inroads with the new ball. They did just that as Naseem Shah struck early to dismiss Devon Conway. The hosts kept the pressure on and did not allow the opposition batters to get off the hook. Just when a partnership was brewing, they got rid of Finn Allen and then the debutant Usama Mir accounted for Kane Williamson as his first ODI wicket. Pakistan continued to chip in with wickets at regular intervals and did not allow New Zealand to get away. The pair of Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips did trouble them but Naseem Shah struck twice to remove both batters and that allowed Pakistan to restrict New Zealand to a below-par total. Naseem Shah was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5 for 57 from his 10 overs while Usama Mir chipped in with two wickets in his debut game. Mohammad Wasim and Mohammad Nawaz took a wicket each.

A decent end to the innings and New Zealand end up with a competitive total on the board. Sent into bat first, New Zealand were dealt an early blow, losing Devon Conway in the first over. Kane Williamson joined Finn Allen in the middle and got New Zealand off to a cautious start. Just when Finn was starting to come to terms with the pace and bounce of the wicket, he was dismissed. The Kiwi skipper followed him soon after to put the tourists in a spot of bother. Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham then got together and steadied the ship with a 56-run stand. Both the set batters were dismissed in the space of five overs which meant New Zealand were struggling at 147-5. Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips then resurrected the innings with a 66-run partnership. The dismissal of Glenn meant the visitors lost their way in the innings. However, Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee struck a few lusty blows towards the end to help New Zealand cross the 250-run mark.

Time for Drinks! After being sent into bat, it has been a sedate start by New Zealand. They did lose Devon Conway early but Finn Allen and Kane Williamson kept the scoreboard ticking. However, they have been pegged back slightly by the loss of both set batters. Also, Tom Latham is the next batter in for New Zealand and Pakistan will look to build on the pressure.

Right then, we are done with the national anthems and we are all set for the action to start. The umpires and players make their way out in the middle. Finn Allen and Devon Conway will be the openers for New Zealand. Naseem Shah will start the proceedings with the first new ball for Pakistan. One slip in place. Here we go...

We are moments away from the first ball in this first ODI but before that, it's time for the national anthems. It will be New Zealand's first followed by Pakistan's.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Kane Williamson (C), Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (WK), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, Henry Shipley (On debut), Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson.

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Haris Sohail, Agha Salman, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir (On debut), Mohammad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf.

TOSS - The coin toss lands in the favour of Pakistan and they have opted to bowl first.

We have some news coming in from the Pakistan camp - Usama Mir is all set to make his ODI debut today. The leg-spinner was one of the top performers in the recently concluded Pakistan Cup 2022-23 as he took 28 wickets from 11 matches.

New Zealand had a torrid end to their ODI season away from home, losing 3-0 in Australia, and they will look to put that series loss behind them and start afresh in 2023. The Kiwis will play this series under the leadership of their white-ball skipper, Kane Williamson. The visitors will be without the services of Trent Boult and Matt Henry, but they have good depth in the pace attack to make up for their absence. Having finished runners-up at the 2019 ODI World Cup, New Zealand will look to put their best foot forward in the lead-up to 2023’s 50-over event. Will the visitors draw first blood in the series, or will we see the hosts take the lead? We shall find out. Toss and team news coming up shortly.

Pakistan had a great ODI season at home in 2022, winning a series against Australia and West Indies and they will be keen to start the new year where they left off. The hosts will continue to be led by Babar Azam, and the skipper has some new faces at his disposal. Although Shadab Khan and Shaheen Afridi are missing out due to injuries, it is time for others to step up and claim a spot in the Pakistan side for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Hello and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our coverage of the 1st ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi. With the ODI World Cup scheduled to be played later in the year, both teams will be eager to kickstart their preparations for that event on a winning note.

... MATCH DAY …

After a closely fought two-match Test series that ended in a draw and both sides sharing the trophy, it is now time for some white-ball action. Pakistan and New Zealand now battle it out in a three-match ODI series with all three ODIs to be played at the National Stadium in Karachi. Pakistan continue to be without the services of the spearhead of their attack, Shaheen Afridi. Moreover, the hosts were dealt a major blow in their preparations for the ODI series as leg spinner Shadab Khan was ruled out of the series with a finger injury. However, their pace bowling will be boosted by the return of Haris Rauf who missed the Test series due to a quad injury. Pakistan also have Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Wasim and Naseem Shah in the pace department. The spin-bowling duties for the hosts rest on the shoulders of Mohammad Nawaz and the uncapped trio of Tayyab Tahir, Kamran Ghulam and Usama Mir. In the batting department, Pakistan will be dependent on their captain Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq. New Zealand will be led by Kane Williamson who returns to lead them in ODIs. The visitors have Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry and Blair Tickner in their ranks as seaming options. In the spinning department, they will rely on Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi and Michael Bracewell. The onus will also be on Tom Latham, Finn Allen and Devon Conway to contribute with the bat and help the visitors put up a good show in this series. Who will draw first blood and take a 1-0 lead in the series? We shall find out together.
