WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT? THE MATCH HAS BEEN TIED AND A SUPER OVER WILL FOLLOW NOW. Sri Lanka will be absolutely gutted as around the 15th over, they were sitting right in the driver's seat. They needed 9 off the last 12 balls but they just couldn't cross the line in the end. But again, their middle order fell like a house of cards for the third straight time in the same series. And of course, India fought bravely, until the last drop of blood. And what a spectacular debut series is Suryakumar Yadav having as the skipper! Strengthening the saying that cricket is a funny old game, full of uncertainties.

SUPER OVER TIME! Not the best of throws from the deep and Maheesh Theekshana makes it in! More drama! SKY bowls it fuller and quicker, on off, Chamindu Wickramasinghe cross bats this one to the right of long on along the ground. The batters have to cross for the second and the throw from long on skids off the turf and SKY fails to collect it. Theekshana with a dive is in and thankfully for India, the throw is backed up, keeping it down to two to take the game to a Super Over.

1 ball remaining, 3 runs to win for Sri Lanka. Are we in for a super over? The way this game has twisted and turned, anything is a possibility now. All three results are possible at this point.

19.52

Oh, what happened there? SKY pushes it through, full and on middle, Chamindu Wickramasinghe slaps it down to the left of long off and the batters decide to take the second run. The throw comes in from the deep and Maheesh Theekshana is nowhere in the frame at the bowling end. SKY collects it over his head and can affect an easy run out at the bowling end but he is not aware of the situation and fires it to the batting end where Chamindu Wickramasinghe is in by then.

19.41

Tap and run! Asitha Fernando brings Chamindu Wickramasinghe on strike. Speared in, short and on middle, Asitha Fernando drops it with soft hands on the leg side and scampers across for one.

Who walks in next? Asitha Fernando is in at number 10. Sri Lanka need 6 off the last 3 deliveries now.

19.3W

OUT CAUGHT BEHIND! Strangled down leg and this is a sharp catch by Sanju Samson! Two in two for Suryakumar Yadav as Sri Lanka continues to wilt under pressure. They have now lost their last 7 wickets for 26 runs. Fired in down leg by SKY, flat and short, Maheesh Theekshana goes for the sweep to get it behind square on the leg side but misses. There is a noise as Sanju Samson takes it to his left.  The umpire is unmoved and India take the review. The UltraEdge shows that there is glove involved. What a time to get it right! 6 needed off 3 now.

Is it off the pad, or off the bat? The decision for caught behind is sent upstairs now. A slight murmur when the ball passes off the glove and Theekshana is a goner. OUT!

Sri Lanka are imploding and collapsing, yet again! The Sri Lankan head coach Sanath Jayasuriya is sitting with a blank look on his face as he too, cannot believe what's happening. Maheesh Theekshana is the new batter in at number 9.

19.2W

OUT! STRAIGHT TO THE FIELDER! Would you believe it? Kamindu Mendis could not have picked out the man in the deep any better. Suryakumar Yadav has a sheepish look on his face as it was there for Mendis to put away. A rank long hop by Suryakumar Yadav, on off, Kamindu Mendis brings out the reverse sweep but gets this one low on the bat. Spoons a simple catch to deep backward point where Rinku Singh takes an easy catch. Sri Lanka under pressure. 6 needed off 4 now.

19.10

Suryakumar Yadav starts the over well! SKY drops it short and gets it to spin away, short and on off, Kamindu Mendis gives himself too much room to go through the off side and fails to get any bat on it as the ball spins away.

Phew! This is going down to the wire now! Another gamble that has done wonders for India. Sri Lanka need 6 from the last over. Chamindu Wickramasinghe is the new batter in at number 8. Also, India has been penalised for not starting the final over on time. A maximum of 4 fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Initially it was Siraj to bowl the last, but just when we thought we are out of surprises, in comes Suryakumar Yadav himself to bowl the final over.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! More drama! Ramesh Mendis goes for the glory shot but it does not come off for him. Two in the over for Rinku Singh. India have somehow managed to take the game to the last over with  Sri Lanka requiring 6 runs from 6 balls. Rinku drops it short and on middle, there to be put away. Ramesh Mendis goes on the back foot to pull it over deep mid-wicket. Connects well but it is enough to clear the man in the deep. Shubman Gill runs to his left near the fence and balances himself well to take the catch.

18.50

Rinku pushes it through, short and on middle, Ramesh Mendis tucks it to mid-wicket. Kamindu Mendis sets off for the run before he gets sent back by his partner. 6 needed off 7 now.

The gamble has worked! Rinku Singh removes the well-settled Kusal Perera! 9 needed off 11 balls now. Kamindu Mendis is in at number 7.

18.2W

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Suryakumar Yadav with that smile on his face. Rinku Singh bowls it quicker and flattens his trajectory this time around. Lands it short and drifts it on the leg stump line. Kusal Perera gets over-ambitious to take on the part-timer and goes for a pull shot but he ends up top-edging it over the mid on region. Rinku Singh moves to his left and settles underneath it, takes a safe catch. Kusal Perera perishes it on 46 (34).

18.10

Darted in from around the wicket, full and angling in, Kusal Perera switches his stance for the reverse but misses and wears it on the front pad.

Who will bowl the penultimate over? Suryakumar Yadav with a gamble again. Rinku Singh will bowl the penultimate over with Sri Lanka needing 9 runs off the last 12 balls remaining. It was Riyan Parag in the 1st T20I who snagged a 3-fer and rocked the opposition. Can Rinku Singh do the same? Let's find out...

17.42

Angling in, on a short of a good length, Kusal Perera tucks it in front of deep mid-wicket and comes charging back for the second run. Ravi Bishnoi runs in too hard and takes his eyes off the ball as he bends to pick it up but two runs were always on.

17.31

Drop and run! On a tighter line, on off, on a hard length, Ramesh Mendis taps it with soft hands in front of a quick single.

Commentary

We are back for Sri Lanka's batting effort. The two umpires and players have made their way out to the middle. It will be Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis to open the innings for Sri Lanka. Khaleel Ahmed will start with the new ball for India. Away we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the game is nicely poised at the halfway mark. Sri Lanka bowled 14 overs of spin, which tells you everything you need to know about how the wicket is behaving. The Indian spinners will be licking their lips at the prospect of bowling on this surface, which is offering sharp turn and bounce. Sri Lanka have a tricky total to overhaul and a good Powerplay will be crucial to their chances in the chase. Join us back in a bit for what should be an interesting chase.

As for Sri Lanka, the debutant, Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Maheesh Theekshana set things up nicely for them. Asitha Fernando too chipped in the Powerplay to put India on the back foot. The middle phase saw India make a comeback as overs 7-15 went for 67 runs at the loss of just one wicket. With a double strike through Wanindu Hasaranga, dismissing both set batters in a single over, Sri Lanka were able to reclaim the ascendancy in the game back. With Matheesha Pathirana feeling his right shoulder due to an effort in the field, Charith Asalanka did not have the option to go to his strike bowler but the rest did well to fill the void.

After being asked to bat first, India were off to a shaky start. Losing four wickets in the Powerplay, the visitors found themselves right behind the eight ball. India's top order was blown away in a flash on a challenging surface but Gill held onto his end. He saw the procession of wickets from the other end as India's score read 48/5 just before the 9th over. Shubman Gill and Riyan Parag then got together and kept the scoreboard ticking with ones and twos. Just as the two batters were beginning to put their foot on the gas, losing both in the same over pegged India back. Sundar's 18-ball 25 ensured that India took some value from the back end of the innings and got close to 140.

A good couple of balls, more importantly, dots, for Sri Lanka to keep India under 140! India, though, will not be too disappointed with what they have ended up with. From 48/5, the visitors added 89 runs for the loss of 4 wickets to finish with 137 on the board

OUT! RUN OUT! A good finish for Sri Lanka overall. Quick, flat and short outside off, Mohammed Siraj throws his bat it at to slash it away, but misses on the outside edge. Kusal Mendis initially fails to collect it cleanly behind the stumps and the ball drops near the strip. Seizing this opportunity, Siraj and Bishnoi look to cross for a single. Kusal Mendis however, is quick to make amends and is quickly reacts to his error to redeem himself. He picks the ball moving forward and scores a direct hit to the non-striker's end. Siraj is way outside the crease when the ball breaks into the stumps. India finish at 137/9.

Mohammed Siraj comes out to bat now.

19.5W

OUT! CLEANED HIM UP! Maheesh Theekshana fires it at the stumps, and full in length, Washington Sundar gets low and tries to be innovative to play the reverse sweep but fails to connect this time. The ball beats his edge and crashes into the stumps. A good pivotal cameo though, by Washington Sundar. He departs on 25 (18).

19.46

SIX! Parried away into the fence for half a dozen! Short and on the stumps, Washington Sundar rocks back and pulls it aerially to clear the deep mid-wicket region but gets the timing a bit late. The ball travels towards Chamindu Wickramasinghe who moves to his left for the catch. He manages to collect the ball but it pops out of his hands and parries over the fence. SIX.

19.30

Drifting down the leg side, on a length, Washington Sundar moves leg side of the ball and tries to hoist it in the deep. Misses and gets rapped on the front pad.

19.22

Darted in, full and on off, Washington Sundar drills it to the right of long off for a couple of runs.

19.11lb

Full and around off, Ravi Bishnoi goes for the switch hit but misses. The ball brushes his front pad and goes past the keeper for a leg bye.

Surely Maheesh Theekshana to bowl the final over of the innings? Yes, it is Theekshana. 3-0-20-2 so far.

No hat-trick for Sundar! Drifting across, full and on off, Ramesh Mendis plays it off the front foot back to the bowler.

DRAMA AT PALLEKELE! Sri Lanka's middle order woes seem to be biting them yet again. Who walks in next to bat? It was first meant to be Kamindu Mendis, but the Lankan coach Sanath Jayasuriya stood up and asked Ramesh Mendis to go out instead. He will face the Hat Trick ball.

Sundar comes from around the wicket and gets the ball to drift in, full and on of, Charith Asalanka looks to play the line of the ball but plays inside the line of the ball. The ball straightens just enough to catch the outside edge and Sanju Samson makes no mistake this time. From 110/1, Sri Lanka are now 117/4, needing 21 runs from 20 balls.

Who walks in next? Charith Asalanka is in at number 5.

A big, big shout for LBW and the finger goes up after an eternity! Kusal Mendis takes the review but this looks like a review more in hope than anything else. Bishnoi bowls it slower through the air but the length is short, there to be pulled away. Kusal Mendis goes deep in the crease for the pull but the ball comes onto him even slower. He fails to connect and the ball hits him on the crouched back leg. There is nothing on UltraEdge and it is three reds on Ball Tracking. Mendis falls for 43 (41).

The ploy to bring in the spinner early on has worked for Sri Lanka as Theekshana sends the dangerous Jaiswal inside the first six. Who walks in next to bat? Opened in the 2nd T20I, Sanju Samson is back in his familiar role this time. He is in at number 3.

OUT! LBW! A loud shout for LBW and up goes the finger! This looks dead straight but Yashasvi Jaiswal after a chat with Gill, takes the review. This was tossed up by Theekshana, full and on middle from around the wicket, Yashasvi Jaiswal reached out in front to play the sweep but got beaten in the flight and missed a straight delivery. Gets pinged near the knee roll on the front pad and the dreaded finger is raised. There is nothing on UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows three reds with the ball crashing into the middle stump. Theekshana has the last laugh! Yashasvi Jaiswal departs on 10 (9).

FOUR! Not in complete control but Yashasvi Jaiswal manages to get it away for a boundary. Theekshana pushes it through, fuller and quicker, on middle, Yashasvi Jaiswal swings too hard and loses his shape as he looks to go over mid on. Gets it off the inner half of the bat and hits it a bit uppishly but it evades mid on to his left for a boundary.

1.40

This is bowled with a flatter trajectory by Theekshana, on middle and leg, Yashasvi Jaiswal knocks it to mid on without much timing.

1.34

FOUR! Gets it through this time! Theekshana floats it up and keeps it full, on middle. Yashasvi Jaiswal makes room as he opens his front up and drills it through covers for a boundary.

1.20

Darted in by Theekshana again, full and on leg, Yashasvi Jaiswal backs away and hits it to straight to cover.

1.10

Theekshana begins from around the wicket and fires it in at 96 kph, full and slanting in, on middle, Yashasvi Jaiswal sweeps it off his pads to short fine leg.

The ball has held its shape a bit and it will be interesting to see how the Indian batters approach the movement in the field restrictions. Who bowls the second over? Spin from the other end. Maheesh Theekshana to share the attack.

Half a shout for LBW but that was heading down leg! Wickramasinghe angles it in, on a good length, on the pads, Shubman Gill gets on his toes but misses the flick shot. Wears it high on the front pad. A tidy start to international cricket for Wickramasinghe.

0.51

Just around the off stump, on a short of a good length, Yashasvi Jaiswal frees his arms and dabs it down to deep backward point for a single.

0.41

Wickramasinghe keeps it tight, on a back of a length, on off. Shubman Gill uses his feet and punches it in front of mid on for a single to get off the mark.

0.30

Wickramasinghe beats the bat now! Goes full and gets a good away shape, outside off. Shubman Gill is lured into the drive and makes the mistake of playing away from his body. It does not cost Gill as the ball zips past the outside edge.

0.21

First runs for Yashasvi Jaiswal and India! A hint of inward movement for Wickramasinghe, in the channel on off, on a good length, Yashasvi Jaiswal loses his shape as he looks to thrash it through the off side but gets it off the inner half of the bat. The ball rolls past mid-wicket for a single.

0.10

The debutant starts well! Wickramasinghe starts from over the wicket and lands it on a hard length, over middle, the ball holds its line a bit. Yashasvi Jaiswal hangs on the back foot and stabs it down with a straight bat.

Well then, all set for the 3rd and the final T20I to commence! The two umpires are out in the middle. Sri Lankan players spread out to their respective field positions after a huddle talk near the ropes. For India, Shubman Gill who missed out on the second match due to a neck spasm walks out with his partner Yashasvi Jaiswal. And Chamindu Wickramasinghe, the 21-year-old right arm seamer, on his T20I debut is straightaway gearing up to bowl the first over. Here we go...

India (Playing XI) - Shubman Gill (In for Rishabh Pant), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Sanju Samson (WK), Riyan Parag, Shivam Dube (In for Hardik Pandya), Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar (In for Axar Patel), Ravi Bishnoi, Khaleel Ahmed (In for Arshdeep Singh), Mohammed Siraj.

The skipper of India, Suryakumar Yadav says that with the weather around and it being difficult to bowl with the wet ball, they wanted to bowl first. Informs that Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant have been rested. Tells that they spoke about the brand of cricket they want to play and it is about topping it up every game and being the best version of oneself.

Charith Asalanka, the captain of Sri Lanka says the pitch looks very dry so bowling is a good option. On being asked about their batting collapses, he mentions once the ball gets older it is tough to bat. Adds that they have prepared a bit differently for this game. Informs that they have made one change - Chamindu Wickramasinghe will debut and he is in for Dasun Shanaka.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in the favour of Charith Asalanka. Sri Lanka have opted to BOWL first.

JUST IN - Sri Lanka have announced their ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against India, which begins on Friday, August 2. Charith Asalanka has been appointed as the new ODI captain, succeeding Kusal Mendis. Asalanka, who took over the T20I captaincy from Wanindu Hasaranga, will now lead the team in the ODI format as well.

PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold is near the deck. He starts by saying that it is tough to predict the weather but the ground staff are hopeful that the strong winds will blow the clouds away. Adds that there might be intermittent showers but it should remain dry till 10-10:30 pm local time (the game will start at 8 pm local time). Russel informs that a fresh surface will be used for this game. Further says that this wicket is a lot drier and it looks very rough. Opines that the ball will grip but the wicket will be on the slower side. Reckons that the pacers will be effective with their slower deliveries. Feels that the captain winning the toss will look to bowl first with the possibility of a shortened game and dew. Tells that 160-170 will be a good score batting first. Says that the slower you bowl, the harder it will be for the batters to hit.

UPDATE - 7.02 pm IST (1.32 pm GMT) - Another update! An official one! The toss is scheduled at 7.40 pm IST (2.10 pm GMT) and the first ball will be bowled at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT). WE WILL HAVE A COMPLETE GAME WITH NO OVERS LOST!

UPDATE - 6.58 pm IST (1.28 pm GMT) - More positive scenes now! Players from both sides are on the field now, doing their pre-match drills. Arshdeep Singh is warming up and marking his run-up, while Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya are assessing the deck. The Sri Lankan players are in a circle near the ropes and a football drill is being carried out. Now, the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir is seen inspecting the deck. Rinku Singh is practising his strokes while the others are warming up as well. Everything is looking in place now. Let's hope we don't have any further delays.

UPDATE - 6.50 pm IST (1.20 pm GMT) - The two umpires were out there in the middle, just near the strip. Sanath Jayasuriya, the Sri Lankan head coach had a brief chat with them. This probably might be about the conditions, and the toss should be just around the corner now. Also, the Super Sopper is doing the rounds of the park. Please stick around!

In hockey, India returned to winning ways after yesterday's 1-1 draw against Argentina, securing a 2-0 victory over Ireland. Setpieces proved decisive, with captain Harmanpreet Singh finding the back of the net twice, once via a stroke and once from a penalty corner. India will lean on this confidence as they prepare to take on stronger teams in Belgium and Australia next.

While we wait for the action to commence, let's get you up to speed with the Olympics action. From an Indian standpoint, it has been an eventful Day 4 at the Paris 2024 Olympics so far. The day began brightly with Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh securing a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, marking India's second medal of the Games. This follows Bhaker’s earlier success two days ago, where she opened India's account in Paris with a bronze medal in the individual 10m air pistol event. By doing so, Bhaker became the first Indian female athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. Quite an achievement for the 22-year-old shooting sensation!

UPDATE - 6.45 pm IST (1.15 pm GMT) - The covers from the square are being peeled off now. Also, since Pallekele has witnessed torrential rain in the last 24 hours, the conditions might be slightly damp. So the toss will play a key role here. The captain winning the flip of the coin might opt to bowl first. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE - 6.35 pm IST (1.05 pm GMT) - The toss has been officially delayed. But since the pouring has stopped now, we might not be very far away from the coin flip. Currently, the dry-up ops are underway at Pallekele.

UPDATE - 6.27 pm IST (12.57 pm GMT) - We have an update! Good news, folks! The drizzle has stopped and the covers are gradually coming off right now. Also, the heavy-duty covers are being peeled off from the pitch, which is a promising sign. A fresh surface will be used for the 3rd T20I. The ground staff is working hard to prepare the ground so that we get the game started as soon as possible. We might also see the Super Soppers out any minute now. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE - 6.20 pm IST (12.50 pm GMT) - Uh, oh! We are just a few moments away from the toss but it has just started drizzling at Pallekele. The covers are on right now. Not an official word, but it is highly likely that the toss might get delayed. Stay tuned for further updates.

For those worried about the weather, rain has been a frequent visitor in Kandy over the past couple of days. However, the forecast looks promising for the match hours, so we should be in for a good game without weather interruptions. Stay tuned for the toss and team news.

India's new T20I era, under head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, has kicked off on a positive note. In both games, the visitors found themselves on the back foot, but the bowling unit bailed them out, staging impressive comebacks. Suryakumar Yadav, true to his word at the toss in the first game, has delivered on his promise of a fearless brand of cricket. With the T20I series secured and only a two-day gap before the ODI series, India might seize this opportunity to give bench players valuable game time while resting those likely to feature in the ODI series.

After the T20 World Cup debacle, Sri Lanka entered this series with hopes of turning over a new leaf. However, their mission has faltered with twin losses, and more than the defeats themselves, it is the manner of these losses that will sting for Charith Asalanka and his team. Sri Lanka’s series has been marred by twin collapses, where they have squandered strong positions in both matches. Despite solid performances from their top order, led by Pathum Nissanka, the middle order has failed to deliver, resulting in frustrating and costly batting collapses.

Hello and a warm welcome, folks, to our coverage of the third and final T20I between Sri Lanka and India. We are at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy for one final time on India's tour of the island nation before the caravan will shift to Colombo for the ODI series. With India holding an unassailable 2-0 lead, they’ll be aiming for a clean sweep, while Sri Lanka will be looking to salvage some pride and make their mark on the series.

... MATCH DAY ...

The third and final T20I of the series between Sri Lanka and India awaits us at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. With India holding a 2-0 lead, there is no way back for Sri Lanka in the series but will aim to finish on a high note and carry momentum into the ODI series. The story for Sri Lanka has been marked by twin collapses, resulting in them squandering strong positions in both matches. In the series opener, they crumbled from 140/1 to 170 all out. In the second game, they were 130/2 at the end of 15 overs but lost 7 wickets for just 31 runs, finishing with only 161. It did not get any better from them as India made light work of the revised target of 78 runs in 8 overs. Sri Lanka’s top order has performed well, but their middle order has faltered. Charith Asalanka must lead the charge, and Kamindu Mendis, who showed promise in the last game, must also step up. All-rounders Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga have not had much impact and will need to improve their performances. Matheesha Pathirana has been the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, but he needs more support from Maheesh Theekshana and Asitha Fernando to avoid a clean sweep. On the other hand, India’s new era in T20Is, with Gautam Gambhir as head coach and Suryakumar Yadav as full-time captain, has begun just as they would have hoped. In both games, their bowling was put to the test, but once they found an opening, they barged through. Spin twins Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel have been particularly effective for the visitors. Arshdeep Singh has been consistently reliable, but his new ball partner, Mohammed Siraj, has blown hot and cold. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryakumar Yadav have exemplified the aggressive brand of cricket India aim to play. Shubman Gill, who missed the last game due to a neck spasm, might return to the lineup, potentially replacing Sanju Samson. With the series already won, India may make additional changes to give bench players some game time. Will India complete the clean sweep? Or will Sri Lanka find the resilience to bounce back and salvage some pride? We shall find out soon enough.
