Commentary

Roston Chase and Rovman Powell proudly receive the trophy together before joining their teammates in front of the 'Champions' board. It's all smiles in the West Indies camp as they celebrate and pose for pictures with the trophy. With this, South Africa's tour of the West Indies has come to an end. After securing a 1-0 victory in the Test series, the visitors faced defeats in all three T20Is. South Africa's next stop is the UAE, where they will first play a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in late September. Following that, they will engage in a full white-ball series against Ireland, also in the UAE, featuring three ODIs and two T20Is. Meanwhile, West Indies players will shift their focus to the Caribbean Premier League, starting later in the week, before returning to international action. Their next international assignment will be at home in late October, where they will host England for three ODIs and five T20Is. There's plenty of cricket on the horizon to keep you entertained. For now, it's goodbye. Cheers!

The stand-in skipper of West Indies, Roston Chase says that they wanted to complete the clean sweep and to be able to do that is a good feeling. Feels that the guys came out well even after the rain break and applied the pressure early. Further says that in a rain-affected game, he wanted the guys to play their natural game. Tells that their focus was to go hard in the Powerplay to make the chase easier.

Shai Hope is the PLAYER OF THE SERIES for his superb batting effort, accumulating 134 runs in 3 matches. He says he prepares well and has got good support and backing which makes it easier. Talks about batting with Alick Athanaze and hopes to continue the partnership and put in some dominating performances for West Indies. Talks about how important it is to play their best cricket and they will work hard and hope to win the next World Cup.

The captain of South Africa, Aiden Markram says that it was a tough loss. Reckons that the conditions changed quite a bit throughout the game and feels that they had the tougher of the conditions. Tells that they know the value of an experience such as this and there are several areas to improve. Feels that it will take time but there were a lot of learnings for the new guys like Kwena Maphaka and Jason Smith.

Romario Shepherd is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliance with the ball. He had figures 2 for 14 from his two overs. He says it's all about sticking to the process and it came good after a tough first game. Adds that with the wet ball, it was difficult and he stuck to change of pace in this game. Appreciates Tristan Stubbs for the way he played and says there's always something to learn. Concludes that it is pleasing to clean sweep the series, especially after losing out in the World Cup against South Africa.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier, the game began after an hour's delay, with South Africa being put into bat. The Proteas had a cautious start, and just as the openers began to find their rhythm, rain interrupted play 4.3 overs into the innings. The match was subsequently reduced to a 13-over-per-side contest. Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram both got starts but couldn't convert them into significant scores. However, Tristan Stubbs, coming in at number 4, injected some much-needed momentum. His explosive 15-ball 40 provided the late surge South Africa desperately needed, pushing their total to 108, which was then DLS-adjusted to a target of 116. For West Indies, Romario Shepherd was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 14 from his 2 overs.

Ottneil Baartman managed to dismiss Pooran, but by then, the damage was done, and it was West Indies' game to lose. Shimron Hetmyer initially struggled to find his rhythm, but once he got going, there was no stopping him. After a crucial fifty-plus stand with Pooran, Shai Hope then teamed up with Hetmyer to guide West Indies home with 22 balls to spare, sealing the victory in an emphatic fashion. As for South Africa, having struggled in the initial 4.3 overs with the bat, things only got tougher as the game was reduced. With the ball, the wet conditions made it challenging for their bowlers to grip, resulting in inconsistent performance and a struggle to maintain control.

Mission clean sweep accomplished for West Indies! The hosts have completed the chase in a canter to dish out yet another whitewash to South Africa in the T20I format. Earlier this year, before the World Cup, Rovman Powell and his men handed the Proteas a 3-0 thrashing, and now, they've doubled the dose post-World Cup, extending their dominance in style. Coming to the chase - In pursuit of 116 runs, West Indies were dealt an early blow in the form of Alick Athanaze. Nicholas Pooran got off the blocks quickly and together with Shai Hope, they broke the back of the chase early. The Proteas bowlers bowled both sides of the wicket and found themselves being taken to the cleaners.

Commentary

We're back with West Indies' reply! The two umpires are making their way to the middle, while Aiden Markram gathers the Proteas for a close-knit huddle by the ropes. The fielders are spreading out to take their positions, and the openers, Alick Athanaze and Shai Hope are striding out for the West Indies! Bjorn Fortuin is tossed the new ball and away we go..

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, with 116 runs to chase, West Indies certainly have the firepower to get the job done. However, South Africa have the momentum and will be eager to carry it into their bowling. An exciting second half is on the horizon. Stick around!

Akeal Hosein is in for a chat. He says that today was about bowling fuller and faster. Further says that he tried to spin the ball as well. Mentions that it is challenging to grip a wet ball but is glad that he did not have to bowl with the wet ball much in this game. Shares that it is a tricky wicket with something in it for the seamers and spinners. Feels that the batters will need to set the chase up and play according to the match ups.

When the match resumed, and with field restrictions relaxed, Akeal Hosein continued his over with tight bowling, eventually dismissing Reeza Hendricks, who had struggled throughout his innings. Aiden Markram then stepped in, adopting an aggressive approach to increase the scoring rate, but Romario Shepherd made an immediate impact, removing Markram on his very first delivery and quickly dismissing Ryan Rickelton, who, despite being handed two lifelines by the West Indies fielders, couldn’t capitalize. The in-form Tristan Stubbs came out firing for the Proteas, unleashing a blistering 40 off just 15 balls to propel South Africa to a total of 108 runs, something that seemed unlikely before he took charge.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Akeal Hosein set the tone with pinpoint accuracy for the West Indies, well-supported by Matthew Forde, who kept the openers in check. Despite the cautious start, with just 7 runs on the board after 3 overs, Ryan Rickelton managed to relieve some pressure by hitting a couple of boundaries. However, just as the Proteas seemed to be finding their footing, rain interrupted play.

Wow, despite the rain delay and a shortened game, we've been treated to some thrilling cricket. It’s been a tale of two halves, West Indies dominated the first, but South Africa roared back in the second, closing their innings at 108 runs in the allotted 13 overs. With the DLS method in play, the revised target for West Indies is now 116 runs.

Another off-pace delivery by Forde but the length is pulled back this time, on off, Jason Smith waits on it and slaps it to long off for just a single. 14 runs off the first 3 balls but a wicket and 2 runs off the next 3 balls as South Africa end up with 108 on the board!

Loopy, slower delivery, on a fullish length, on off, Wiaan Mulder hits it hard down the ground to long off and gets to the other end.

Wiaan Mulder walks out to bat at number 6 for South Africa!

OUT! TAKEN! Matthew Forde fights back! Tristan Stubbs has done his job though. Forde bowls it full and straight, at the stumps, Tristan Stubbs goes deep in the crease and clears his front leg to launch this one down the ground. Gets this one right off the toe end of the bat and skies it high in the air towards deep mid-wicket where Fabian Allen settles under the skier and takes it near his chest.

12.34

FOUR! Gap picked to perfection! Slower and on a back of a length by Forde, outside off, Tristan Stubbs gets his weight on the back foot and waits for the ball to arrive. Drills it all along the ground and picks the gap between deep extra cover and long off for a boundary. 14 runs off the first 3 balls of the final over.

12.26

SIX! BOOM! Massive hit! On a length, right in the hitting arc, on middle, Tristan Stubbs clears his front leg and smokes it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. The 100 comes up for South Africa with four balls to go in the innings.

12.14

FOUR! Clever, very clever! At 104.4 kph, on a shortish length, near the tramline on off, Tristan Stubbs predicts the line and length early. Brings out the reverse scoop and gets it over short third for a boundary.

Who will bowl the final over? It will be Matthew Forde to close the innings with the ball.

The over did not start well for South Africa with just a single from the first 3 balls but Stubbs ensured that it ended well. 17 runs off the over.

FOUR! Crunched! Angling away from the batter, on a short of a good length, Tristan Stubbs creates a strong base for himself and holds his shape before slapping it past cover for a boundary.

OUT! CAUGHT! Akeal Hosein gets the first breakthrough and this is a deserving wicket for him! Digs it marginally short and on off, getting the ball to turn away even further, Reeza Hendricks hangs back and looks to pull but the ball is way too wide on the off side for him to make the right connection. He still goes through with the shot and gets it high in the air in front of deep mid-wicket. Fabian Allen sprints to the ball and dives ahead to take a sharp low catch.

4.50

A huge appeal for LBW, but the umpire turns it down. Hosein bowls this short and on middle and leg and gets the ball to grip and turn away. Reeza Hendricks looks for the sweep but gets beaten as the ball hits him near the waist. It looked to be going over the stumps to the naked eye and Roston Chase thought so as well.

4.40

Continues from around the wicket and bowls it fuller than a good length on middle and leg and gets the ball to turn away sharp. Reeza Hendricks is beaten on all ends.

All in readiness for the resumption. Roston Chase and his men make their way out to the middle. Ryan Rickelton and Reeza Hendricks are all set to resume their innings. Akeal Hosein will complete his over. Since 4 overs have been completed, West Indies can have a maximum of 5 fielders outside the 30-yard circle for the rest of the innings. Let's play...

UPDATE - 9.18 pm GMT - Great news! Play set to resume at 9.30 pm GMT. It will be a 13-over-per-side contest. The Powerplay will be of 4 overs. Three bowlers can bowl three overs, while two bowlers can bowl two. Since 4.3 overs have already been completed in the South African innings, the DLS method will be used to determine the target for the West Indies.

UPDATE - 9.13 pm GMT - The Super Soppers are still working on a few problematic areas in the outfield that have raised concerns for the umpires. Additionally, dryers are being used to assist with the drying process. Live pictures show the two on-field umpires inspecting the outfield by pressing their toes into the turf. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE - 8.57 pm GMT - Live visuals show the ground staff beginning to peel off the covers, with the two on-field umpires and the reserve umpire present in the middle. The Super Sopper is being used on the remaining covers before the square can be fully uncovered. There are some puddles in the outfield that the ground staff will need to address. The stumps have been erected, so the delay won’t be as long as we initially anticipated.

UPDATE - 8.41 pm GMT - Positive news! The rain has eased, but the covers are still in place. Given the intensity of the downpour, it will take some time for the ground staff to remove the excess water from the covers and mop up the outfield. Stick around for more news.

UPDATE - 8.18 pm GMT - Argh! The drizzle has picked up, and the ground staff are rushing in with the covers. There is lightning in the distance as more covers are being brought on by the ground staff in anticipation of a heavier bout of rain. Let's hope the wind stays strong and clears away those dark clouds. Remember, we have already used up the 60 minutes of extra time, so, if and when the play resumes, it will be a shortened game.

4.30

PITCH REPORT - Nikhil Uttamchandani is near the deck. He begins by praising the ground staff for their swift work in preparing the field after 40 minutes of steady rain. He also shares an intriguing observation - the team batting first during this series has scored at an average of 6 runs per over during the Powerplay, while the team batting second has managed to score at 12 runs per over. Samuel Badree joins him and notes that while this is a different surface, it resembles the pitch used in the first two T20Is. He speculates that despite its dry appearance, the pitch, having been under covers, may retain some moisture. Badree highlights that the average first-innings score in winning matches at this venue has been 182, suggesting South Africa should aim for around 200 to set a challenging target. He also emphasizes the importance of bowling at a length between 6 to 8 meters and using variations in pace to be effective

Aiden Markram, the skipper of South Africa says they will try and get off to a good start and do better than the last time. Adds that they hope they don't lose wickets in clusters, assess the conditions and take the right options. Concludes that they have two changes and Jason Smith will make his debut while Wiaan Mulder comes into the side.

The stand-in captain of West Indies, Roston Chase says that the surface plays slow and sticky upfront so want to utilise that and restrict South Africa. Tells that they want to go up in the rankings and therefore, each game is important. Adds that they handed a whitewash before the World Cup and it will be nice if they can do it again. Informs that they have made three changes.

UPDATE - 7.04 pm GMT - Not a great sight indeed. The covers were just being removed when a light drizzle returned, prompting the groundstaff to put them back in place. Despite the drizzle, the sun is still shining brightly, and it looks like this might be the last bit of rain before we see some action. Stay tuned for further updates.

Shai Hope is in for a flash interview. He says that they have played some pretty good cricket and being consistent has been their main focus. Adds that they have the belief and the skills to do it. Tells that he has set high standards for himself and is always striving to do better. Mentions that the hard work done off the field is now showing positive results.

UPDATE - 6.50 pm GMT - Good news! The rain has stopped, and the ground staff have made their way out to the middle. They will first deal with the water on the covers using the Super Sopper before removing them completely. The sun is shining, which should help dry up the outfield. As observed during the series opener, once the rain ceased, it didn't take the ground staff long to prepare the field for play. Stick around for further updates.

Reeza Hendricks is up for a chat. He says that the last game was disappointing and a lot of talk has gone on where they can improve and what can be done right. Adds that it's never ideal to lose wickets in clusters and they hope to put performances and build partnerships. On his own game, he says he is trying to keep it all simple, assess the conditions, and play accordingly.

UPDATE - 6.31 pm GMT - Oh no, this isn’t the start we were hoping for. Unfortunately, it is raining, and the toss has been officially delayed. Ian Bishop informs us that it's been raining in Tarouba since early morning. The ground staff were active about 20 minutes ago, but the rain returned, halting their efforts. He also mentions that we have a 60-minute buffer before we start losing overs. Surprisingly, the sun has peeked through the clouds. Let's hope the rain subsides soon.

The batting collapse in the previous match may have dented their confidence, but the Proteas are a team capable of turning the tide, even with a relatively inexperienced squad. Their bowlers will be keen to make a decisive impact, while the batters look to regain their rhythm and finish the series on a positive note. Stick around as the toss is just moments away.

Hello and a warm welcome to the finale game of this 3-match series between West Indies and South Africa, coming to you from the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago. With the series already clinched after two emphatic victories, West Indies will be eyeing a triumphant clean sweep. However, the Proteas, fueled by pride and the desire to end on a high, will be fighting tooth and nail to avoid a whitewash.

... MATCH DAY ...

The finalists of the 2024 T20 World Cup, South Africa, have already conceded an unassailable lead to the West Indies in this T20I series, and they’ll be eager to avoid a humiliating clean sweep in the Caribbean. To be fair, the Proteas are fielding a relatively inexperienced squad, but their recent performances should still have been better, especially given their impressive showing on the biggest stage not long ago. In the previous match, South Africa found themselves in a strong position at 83/3, chasing 180, but a shocking batting collapse saw them fall to 149 all out. That collapse will have dented their confidence, but they'll be motivated to end their Caribbean tour on a high. Youngster Ryan Rickelton is an exciting talent at the top of the order, known for his aggressive style, while Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks can anchor and accelerate when needed. Tristan Stubbs and Donovan Ferreira provide additional firepower in the lower order. On the bowling front, Ottneil Baartman has been a consistent performer, and Lizaad Williams proved his worth after a long hiatus. Kwena Maphaka will need to step up his game, while Lungi Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder could come in to bolster the pace attack. West Indies, meanwhile, will be brimming with confidence, having avenged their World Cup defeat to South Africa - a loss that had cost them a place in the knockouts. This time, the Windies have the upper hand, showcasing their experience on the field. Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope delivered explosive half-centuries in the opening game, while Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford unleashed their flair in the second match, pushing their team to victory. Alick Athanaze is also finding his footing in the shorter format, adding depth to the batting. With Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde leading the pace attack effectively and Romario Shepherd providing balance with his all-around abilities, the Windies look formidable. Their spin duo, Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein, have the potential to be game-changers on any given night. The West Indies see this as a golden opportunity to complete a clean sweep and build momentum, while the Proteas will be desperate to put up a fight and salvage some pride. Who will have the final say in this thrilling series? Stay tuned to find out!
