AAP | Gangotri Lost
Colonel Ajay Kothiyal, an Indian Army veteran and former principal of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi, joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in April 2021. The AAP's CM face will contest from the Gangotri seat in the Uttarkashi district. The BJP's Gopal Singh Rawat won the Gangotri seat in the 2017 state elections, however, it has been vacant since his death in April from Covid-related problems. After the Kedarnath flash floods in 2013, Colonel Kothiyal was praised for his heroic efforts in saving people and assisting those who were afflicted in getting their lives back on track. He is also the founder of the 'Youth Foundation', a non-profit organisation that trains young boys and girls from Uttarakhand to join the Indian Army. In 2016, he was awarded the Uttarakhand Ratna prize for his dedication to inspiring and employing Uttarakhand's youth.
