The action reignites quickly with the second T20I scheduled for Wednesday, January 21st at 2.30 pm GMT, so be sure to tune in early for the pre-match build-up. Until then, it’s goodbye and cheers from the commentary box!

Brandon King, the skipper of West Indies, says that it is disappointing to lose but they had a few learnings to take from it. Adds that they need to improve on their batting and Afghanistan have quality spinners. He says that they will look to bounce back and win the next game.

Darwish Rasooli is the Player of the Match for his exceptional knock of 84 runs! He says that the plan was simple and the conversation with Ibrahim Zadran was to bat deep. Adds that he tried to play his natural game, which worked for him. Ends by saying that he will keep on improving.

Presentations coming up...

Earlier in the game, after a disastrous start that saw a first-ball run-out and the score slipping to 19/2, Afghanistan staged a sensational recovery to post a commanding 181/3. The innings was defined by a colossal, match-turning 162-run stand for the third wicket between Ibrahim Zadran and Darwish Rasooli, who blended steady accumulation with late aggression. While the West Indies began with intensity, they lost control in the field and with the ball, leaking 53 runs in the final five overs as the Afghan duo capitalized on loose deliveries.

On the other hand, Afghanistan were clinical with the ball. They struck consistently, ensuring no partnership could threaten the total. Ziaur Rahman picked three crucial wickets to break the back of the West Indies batting lineup. He was brilliantly supported by the spin trio of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan, and Noor Ahmad, who chipped in with two wickets each. It was a disciplined bowling effort that secured a well-deserved victory for Afghanistan.

A convincing win for Afghanistan! Chasing a target of 182, the West Indies run chase never quite found its rhythm as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Johnson Charles provided a brief spark with a rapid 27 off 16 balls, but his departure in the powerplay exposed the middle order. The hosts found themselves in deep trouble at 57/5 at the halfway mark, leaving them with a mountain to climb, needing 125 runs from the final 10 overs. Although Quentin Sampson and Matthew Forde attempted a late counter-attack with some big hits, the asking rate proved too steep. Noor Ahmad effectively closed out the game in the 18th over, removing both Forde and Gudakesh Motie to end the resistance.

Commentary

Welcome back for the run chase. The players and the umpires are back on the ground. Brandon King and Evin Lewis are the two openers for the Men in Maroon. It will be the spin of Mujeeb Ur Rahman to start with the ball for Afghanistan. Here we go!

…THE RUN CHASE…

Ibrahim Zadran is in for a chat. He says that Rasooli was excellent and he played proper cricketing shots without trying too hard. Drawing on his experience, he adds the importance of carrying momentum into the middle overs by rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. He says that the total of 181 is good, and says that the focus now shifts to executing their plans with the ball and in the field.

West Indies, meanwhile, looked rusty in the field, with several dropped chances and misfields proving costly. Jayden Seales and Matthew Forde picked up a wicket apiece, while Gudakesh Motie impressed with a tight spell. Chasing 182 for victory, the West Indies will need a strong and composed batting effort. Who do you back to take a 1–0 lead in the series? Stay tuned for the second essay.

A superb batting performance from Afghanistan propelled them to an imposing 181/3 in their 20 overs. After opting to bat first, the Afghans were in early trouble at 19/2, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sediqullah Atal back in the pavilion. Ibrahim Zadran and Darwish Rasooli then steadied the innings, taking their time initially before shifting gears after the halfway mark. The duo stitched together a commanding 162-run partnership for the third wicket. Zadran remained unbeaten on a classy 87, while Rasooli fell on the final ball of the innings after a well-crafted 84. A blistering finish, 70 runs in the last six overs, pushed Afghanistan past the 180-run mark.

Hello everyone, and a very warm welcome to our coverage of the first T20I of the three-match series between Afghanistan and the West Indies, from the Dubai International Stadium. With the T20 World Cup just around the corner, both sides will be eager to fine-tune their combinations and sharpen their preparations ahead of the marquee event.

…MATCHDAY…

The 3-match T20 International series between Afghanistan and the West Indies serves as a vital dress rehearsal for both teams ahead of the T20 World Cup in February. Afghanistan, led by the astute Rashid Khan, will look to leverage their formidable spin attack, featuring Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad, to exploit the turning tracks in Dubai, a key aspect of their strategy. The onus will be on openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz to lay a solid foundation, though the middle order will need to demonstrate greater consistency to ensure competitive totals. To succeed, Afghanistan's batting unit must adeptly navigate the West Indies' pace battery, setting up their spinners to defend. The West Indies, captained by Brandon King, boast a dynamic batting lineup, featuring power-hitters Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer, alongside emerging talents like Quentin Sampson. Their strength lies in this potent batting firepower and a diverse bowling attack, led by Shamar Joseph's pace and Gudakesh Motie's spin. However, the absence of key players and the lack of match practice for some returning from injury could prove a stumbling block. To clinch the series, the West Indies will need their returning players to hit the ground running and effectively counter Afghanistan's spin threat in conditions similar to those at the World Cup venues.
