Commentary

That wraps up a competitive T20 series between Afghanistan and the West Indies, with the hosts ultimately claiming a 2-1 victory. While the Afghans take home the trophy, the West Indies will be buoyed by their fighting spirit and win in the final match, ending the series on a positive note. Both teams depart this series with significant takeaways and a clear picture of what needs to be finetuned in the limited weeks remaining before the ICC T20 World Cup begins. The stage is set for a thrilling tournament as these sides, now well-tested, prepare for the global showcase. Cheers for now.

Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan emphasized the critical importance of the series against the West Indies as a final preparatory benchmark ahead of the World Cup, providing numerous positives and vital energy for the squad. He noted that the games offered a key opportunity to assess the team's composure during chases, specifically how they handle targets around 150-160 runs in similar conditions to those expected in the tournament. Rashid concluded that continuous improvement in the death overs is essential, stressing that the bowling unit must work on restricting opponents from scoring 45-50 runs in the final stages of an innings.

West Indies' captain Brandon King praised his entire bowling unit for making it difficult for the Afghanistan batters during the final match, effectively executing their plans from a bowling point of view. King indicated that this victory and performance level are much closer to the standard the team is capable of achieving, suggesting positive momentum as they look ahead to the ICC T20 World Cup.

Darwish Rasooli is the Player of the Series. He acknowledged that while the team is pleased with the series win, they remain focused on continuous improvement as they ramp up preparations for the upcoming World Cup. He highlighted the middle order as a specific area requiring further refinement to ensure the team is fully prepared for the global stage. Despite the narrow loss in the final game, Rasooli expressed confidence that the squad will address these gaps and certainly bounce back stronger in their future fixtures.

Player of the Match is Shamar Springer. He expressed his delight to claim a T20I hat-trick, a feat that felt great after patiently waiting for his turn to return to the side. He emphasized his sole focus on giving his best whenever he gets an opportunity. Reflecting on his crucial batting partnership with Matthew Forde, Springer revealed their simple strategy was to minimize dot balls and aggressively look for boundaries. When discussing his bowling approach, he noted his intention to make the batsmen hit towards the larger boundaries and maintain sharp focus on his execution.

Presentation to follow...

Earlier in the game, West Indies posted a fighting total of 151 thanks to a late surge from Matthew Forde and Shamar Springer. After a cautious start, Afghanistan's bowlers applied pressure, dismissing Johnson Charles and restricting the West Indies from scoring freely. Brandon King's 47 anchored the innings, but wickets fell regularly, and West Indies struggled to regain momentum. However, Forde's 27 off 11 balls and Springer's 16 off 9 balls changed the game, adding valuable runs at the death. Afghanistan's bowlers, including Ziaur Rahman, Rashid Khan, and Abdullah Ahmadzai, took crucial wickets to keep West Indies contained.

The Windies' fielding was also top-notch, with sharp ground fielding and crisp catching, barring a dropped chance from Springer in the Powerplay. Shamar's 4 wickets were instrumental in turning the game, and the other bowlers chipped in with crucial wickets to seal the win for the Windies.

Shamar Springer's hat-trick was the catalyst for the Windies' incredible turnaround. Prior to that, Afghanistan's openers had set the tone for a comfortable chase, putting on a partnership of 74 runs without loss before the drinks break. However, the Windies' bowlers, led by Shamar's devastating spell, took the game away from the hosts, with wickets tumbling at regular intervals. The Afghans were left shell-shocked, with no batter other than Gurbaz and Zadran able to make a significant impact, exposing their dependence on the openers and raising concerns ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup.

The West Indies' bowling unit have pulled off a stunning comeback, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat as they restricted Afghanistan to 138, winning the match by 13 runs. Afghanistan had looked set to cruise to a comfortable win, riding on a solid start from their openers, with the score reading 95 for 1 in the chase of 152. However, the Windies' bowlers conjured up a spellbinding performance, taking the game away from the hosts in the final 10 overs. The turning point came in the 19th over, courtesy Shamar Springer's sensational hat-trick, which left Afghanistan reeling and unable to recover.

…THE RUN CHASE…

For Afghanistan, Rashid Khan and Abdullah Ahmadzai were the standout bowlers, picking up two wickets apiece, while Kamal claimed the key scalp of Charles. Ziaur Rahman also took a couple of wickets but proved a bit expensive. Chasing 152, the West Indies will back themselves to get the job done and complete a whitewash. Can they rise to the challenge, or will the Windies bowlers show more fight? We’ll find out shortly. Join us soon for the second innings.

A late flourish from the West Indies lifted them to their highest total of the series, as they posted 151/7 in their 20 overs after being asked to bat first. Brandon King was the standout, scoring 47 off 35 balls and anchoring useful partnerships with Charles, Greaves, Carty, and Hetmyer through the middle phase. At 122/6, the Windies appeared to be in trouble, but Matthew Forde and Shamar Springer provided late impetus with quick-fire cameos, pushing the total past the 150-run mark.

That is an alarming moment, and the immediate concern is for Rahmanullah Gurbaz's well-being. A run-out attempt by Gudakesh Motie at the non-striker's end has resulted in the ball hitting Gurbaz flush on the helmet, leaving him in significant trouble. Hits this straight into the hands of Shamar Springer at the deep mid-wicket region for a soft dismissal.

DRINKS! This has been a sensational showcase of batting from the Afghan openers. Both Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran took on the opponent bowlers and made sure not to give many chances to the WI. Both the openers have played every ball on its merit and have cruised to 74 off the first 10 overs. Commentary

We are back with the chase. The duo of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran strides out in the middle to open the innings for Afghanistan. Matthew Forde has been trusted to open for the West Indies with the new ball.

All set now for the action to commence.  The teams and the umpires are in the middle. Johnson Charles and Brandon King are the openers for the West Indies. It will be Mujeeb Ur Rahman to start with the ball for Afghanistan. Let's go...

West Indies skipper Brandon King said they were happy to bat first, adding that it was good to change the dynamics after the first two games. He confirmed three changes to the side, with Keacy Carty, Shamar Springer, and Justin Greaves coming in. King stressed the need to reduce their dot-ball percentage, particularly during the middle overs against spin. He concluded by saying the team has discussed a few adjustments and is hopeful they will pay off today.

Rashid Khan, the captain of Afghanistan, won the toss and elected to bowl. He said the team wanted to test themselves while chasing to see how it goes, adding that it is a valuable exercise ahead of the World Cup. He emphasized that every international game is important and that the players must always take pride in representing their country, whether it is the first match or the last of a series. Rashid mentioned that the focus is on being well prepared for the World Cup and that the team will give their best in the remaining games leading up to it. He praised Rasooli for his excellent performances, particularly for controlling the middle overs, and expressed hope that he continues in the same vein during the World Cup. He concluded by noting that Afghanistan have made three changes: Noor Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Azmatullah Omarzai have been rested, while Shahidullah Kamal, Ziaur Rahman and Abdullah Ahmadzai return to the side.

Afghanistan (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Shahidullah Kamal (in for Azmatullah Omarzai), Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan (C), Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Ziaur Rahman (in for Noor Ahmad), Abdullah Ahmadzai (in for Fazalhaq Farooqi).

West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King (C), Keacy Carty (in for Evin Lewis), Johnson Charles (WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Quentin Sampson, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves (in for Alick Athanaze), Khary Pierre, Shamar Springer (in for Shamar Joseph), Gudakesh Motie, Ramon Simmonds.

TOSS - Afghanistan have won the toss and opted to BOWL first.

With the series already decided, the West Indies will be desperate to put in a strong performance and end on a high. Can the Windies summon a comeback in the finale, or will Afghanistan cruise to a 3–0 series victory? We’ll find out shortly. Toss and team news coming up soon. Stay tuned.

The West Indies, meanwhile, showed early promise with the ball, striking twice inside the Powerplay, but were unable to sustain the pressure as the innings wore on. Afghanistan capitalised on some sloppy fielding, misfields, and dropped chances proving costly, to race to a commanding total. Matthew Forde and Khary Pierre offered some resistance with the ball, but the chase never truly gathered momentum. Reduced to 38 for 3, the Men in Maroon relied on Brandon King’s fluent 50 and Shimron Hetmyer’s 46 as the lone bright spots, eventually finishing on 150 and conceding defeat in the penultimate over.

Afghanistan once again set the template in the second T20I, producing a performance reminiscent of the series opener. Batting first, they posted an imposing 189 for 4, built around commanding half-centuries from Sediqullah Atal and Darwish Rasooli. The bowlers then took centre stage, delivering a ruthless display led by Mujeeb ur Rahman, who claimed four wickets, including a sensational hat-trick. Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Fazalhaq Farooqi chipped in with timely breakthroughs as Afghanistan sealed a comprehensive 39-run victory. They will be keen to replicate that all-round excellence and wrap up a clean sweep.

Hello, and a warm welcome to our coverage of the third and final T20I between Afghanistan and the West Indies, from the Dubai International Stadium. After back-to-back defeats in the opening two matches, the West Indies will be eager to finish the series on a positive note and salvage some pride, while Afghanistan have their sights firmly set on completing a dominant 3–0 whitewash.

…MATCHDAY…

As the road to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 begins in earnest, Afghanistan and the West Indies meet for the third and final T20I of their series in the UAE. With the series finale set to be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, both teams are looking to fine-tune their squads and solidify their combinations for the mega-event in India and Sri Lanka next month. Afghanistan enters this match with immense momentum, having dominated the first two encounters. For the West Indies, this is a final opportunity to find their rhythm and salvage pride before a grueling World Cup schedule. Under the leadership of Rashid Khan, Afghanistan has evolved from a giant killer to a powerhouse in the T20 format. Their performance in the first two matches showcased a terrifying blend of top-order aggression and world-class spin bowling. The partnership between Ibrahim Zadran/Sediqullah Atal alongside Darwish Rasooli has been the story of the series. Their ability to rebuild after early losses and accelerate in the death overs has left the Windies' bowlers searching for answers. The trio of Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Noor Ahmad remains the most formidable spin unit in world cricket. In the dry conditions of Dubai, they have effectively squeezed the West Indian middle order. Leading a side missing several key stars due to SA20 commitments, Brandon King has had a tough task. The Windies have shown flashes of brilliance but have lacked the consistency required to beat this Afghan side on sub-continental-style tracks. Jayden Seales and Matthew Forde have bowled with heart, but the lack of experienced spin support has made it difficult to contain Afghanistan's set batters. Afghanistan starts as the heavy favorites to complete a 3-0 whitewash. Their mastery of the conditions and the clinical form of their senior players make them a difficult mountain to climb for this depleted West Indies side. However, if the Caribbean power-hitters can find their range and navigate the middle-over spin trap, we could be in for a classic 'Calypso' fightback.
