Commentary
Welcome back. The New Zealand players are out in the middle. Tanzid Hasan and Saif Hassan to open for Bangladesh. Nathan Smith to bowl first.
...THE CHASE...
Advantage, Bangladesh - Bangladesh delivered a brilliant, high-stakes performance to keep the series alive, with a clinical display of bowling. While Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam set an aggressive tone with the new ball, it was Rana’s relentless spell that truly dictated the terms.\ Utilizing a barrage of sharp, uncomfortable short balls, Rana dismantled the New Zealand batting order to claim a decisive five-wicket haul. Although Hossain and Mehidy provided vital support to keep the pressure on, Rana’s five-fer acted as the wrecking ball that broke the backbone of the Kiwi lineup and shifted the momentum firmly in Bangladesh's favor. Now, Bangladesh are clear favourites. The pitch is on the slower side but the home team should get the job done. Stay tuned.
Far from enough by the Kiwis - New Zealand managed to scrape their way toward a 200-run total, though it was far from a vintage performance. At the halfway point, they sat at a sluggish 97/3, struggling to find any real momentum against a disciplined bowling attack. While Kelly anchored the innings with a gritty maiden fifty and attempted to shift gears late in his knock, he found the acceleration difficult to sustain. His departure for a well-made 83 exposed a middle order that failed to capitalize on their starts, remarkably, no other batter managed to cross the 20-run threshold. With Abbas’s 19 ranking as the second-highest score of the innings, the scorecard told a clear story of a side heavily reliant on a single individual to carry them to a competitive mark.

Commentary
Goodbye! That wraps up an exciting second ODI, leaving this thrilling series perfectly balanced at 1-1! Everything now comes down to a winner-takes-all decider on Thursday, April 23rd at 5 am GMT. Be sure to tune in and join us for all the early build-up as we get ready for the grand finale. Until then, take care and cheers!
Bangladesh captain - Mehidy Hasan Miraz says that he is proud of his team's strong comeback after losing the first match. He gave special credit to his fast bowlers, Rana, Shoriful, and Taskin, for doing a fantastic job in difficult conditions. Says that he was impressed by the brilliant 100-plus run partnership between Tanzid and Shanto, which saved the team after losing two early wickets, and he said that Shanto is steadily improving his game.
Nahid Rana is the Player of the Match for his five-wicket haul.
New Zealand captain - Tom Latham says that their total of 198 wasn't enough after Bangladesh's early pressure stopped them from building solid partnerships. He praised Nick Kelly for a brilliant 83 on a tricky, slow pitch but felt the team missed out on an extra 30 to 50 runs due to a lack of support from the rest of the batters. Although they managed a couple of early wickets during the chase, Bangladesh's aggressive approach quickly took the game away. Ends by saying that his team are fully focused on the upcoming series decider in Chattogram, where they hope to adapt quickly to the new ground and put up a strong fight.
Presentations coming up...
Tanzid and Shanto were exceptional - Cometh the hour, cometh the men! Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto completely steadied the ship and took the game right away from the Kiwis. They batted beautifully, putting together a massive match-winning partnership of 120 runs. Tanzid scored a superb 76, while Shanto played the perfect anchor role with a solid 50. By the time they were dismissed, the heavy lifting was done. The rest of the batters comfortably chased down the target to seal the win and level the series 1-1.
Bangladesh felt the heat early on as well - Chasing 199 was never a simple walk in the park, and Bangladesh felt the heat right away. The New Zealand bowlers came out swinging, looking for early breakthroughs to defend their modest total. They got exactly what they wanted when they sent Saif Hassan and Soumya Sarkar packing early. Inside the first four overs, the hosts were wobbling at 21/2, and the crowd was suddenly feeling very, very tense.
Kelly fought hard - Just when the ship looked like it was sinking, Nick Kelly stepped up to the crease with a brilliant, fighting knock. He quietly and cleverly smashed 83, but the moment Kelly was dismissed, the trapdoor opened. The real star of the innings was young pace sensation Nahid Rana, who came out roaring and ripped through the Kiwi lineup to claim a stunning 5/32. The visitors completely lost their momentum at the death and were bundled out for a below-par 198.
A sticky start for the Kiwis - New Zealand won the toss and decided to put runs on the board, but the Bangladesh bowlers were breathing fire right from the word go. The pitch was slow and runs were incredibly hard to come by. Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam tied the openers down, keeping them to just two runs off the first three overs. The visitors were left gasping at 28/2 by the end of the first Powerplay.

In a moving tribute on the field, BCB President Tamim Iqbal stood alongside his former teammate Rubel Hossain, who recently announced his retirement from cricket, to present him with a commemorative plaque and memento, after which an emotional Rubel shared a final message and knelt to touch the pitch one last time.
PITCH REPORT - HD Ackermann is pitchside and he reports that today's pitch features symmetrical side boundaries of 64 and 63 metres, with a longer 79-metre hit straight down the ground and a crosswind to consider. He observes that the surface has more grass than the previous match, which should help hold it together, though he warns that cracks may emerge if moisture isn't maintained. Overall, Ackermann expects this to be a superior batting surface compared to the first ODI.
Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz - Miraz views this must-win match as a significant opportunity, expressing confidence that his team can secure a victory if they perform to their potential. He describes the wicket as batting-friendly but believes the bowlers can restrict the opposition if they capitalize on chances and secure early wickets in the first ten overs. Miraz adds that he is counting on his bowlers to step up and bowl economically. Mehidy Hasan Miraz informs that they have a change from the previous XI with Afif Hossain being replaced by Soumya Sarkar.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham - Latham says that the surface appears slightly different than the previous match, the dry conditions underneath should offer similar characteristics. Tom adds that the team’s focus remains on playing the match in front of them, acknowledging that while a series win is within reach, much work remains to be done. Tom Latham informs that they are unchanged for this contest.
Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Tanzid Hasan, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton Das (WK), Tawhid Hridoy, Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (C), Rishad Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana.
New Zealand (Playing XI) - Henry Nicholls, Nick Kelly, Will Young, Tom Latham (C)(WK), Muhammad Abbas, Dean Foxcroft, Josh Clarkson, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, Jayden Lennox, Will O'Rourke.
TOSS - Tom Latham calls it right again and New Zealand will be batting first.
Kiwi pacer, Blair Tickner - Blair Tickner credits his success in the first ODI to New Zealand’s strategy of mixing up bowling options as the wicket became lower and slower. Blair adds that the team is enjoying the warmth and feels well supported by the staff in their preparation. Tickner reckons that he feels confident following the opening win, believing that their ability to adapt and take games deep is essential for the close contests expected in these conditions.
Bangladesh opener, Saif Hassan - Saif reflects on his first ODI performance, noting that while he started well and he aims to build a larger innings in the future to support his team better. He acknowledges that while the wicket behaved unevenly during the second innings, and says that adapting to such challenging conditions is a core responsibility for international players rather than an excuse. Looking ahead to today's match, Hassan says that the team played well overall but highlights the need to better manage key moments and avoid losing wickets at critical junctures to improve their results.
Spin vs stability - The game is likely to be won or lost in the middle overs, specifically the battle between Bangladesh's spinners and New Zealand's adaptability. Blair Tickner, who triggered the previous collapse with a four-wicket haul, will be the primary threat again for the visitors. On the other side, Bangladesh will rely on Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Rishad Hossain to dry up runs and force errors. If Bangladesh can prevent another mid-innings muck-up and build a solid partnership, they have the bowling firepower to level the series, otherwise, New Zealand's clinical efficiency is poised to seal it. Toss and team news in a bit...
Middle-order frailties - For Bangladesh, the first match was a story of missed opportunities and a costly middle-period slowdown. Despite promising half-centuries from Saif Hassan and Towhid Hridoy, the team suffered a collapse in the death overs. The primary concern for the hosts remains the lack of defining partnerships in the middle overs, where batters like Afif Hossain struggled to rotate the strike effectively. To stay in the series, the top order must provide a more stable foundation, and the middle order must find a way to navigate the spin-squeeze applied by the Kiwis.
Clinical under pressure - New Zealand's performance in the first ODI was a masterclass in seizing critical moments. Despite fielding an understrength side, they maintained composure to defend a target of 248. Key contributions came from Henry Nicholls, who anchored the innings, and Dean Foxcroft, whose late-innings provided much-needed momentum. To improve further, the Kiwis will want their top order, specifically Will Young and Tom Latham, to convert their starts into more substantial totals to avoid over-reliance on the lower middle order.
Round 2 in Mirpur - Hello and welcome to all the fans tuning in. The second ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand arrives with the series hanging in the balance at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Following a clinical 26-run victory for the visitors in the opener, New Zealand enters this contest with a 1-0 lead and a chance to secure the three-match series early. For the hosts, this is a must-win encounter to keep the series alive. The pressure is firmly on Bangladesh to exploit their home conditions and bounce back, while a resurgent New Zealand side looks to capitalize on their psychological edge.
... MATCHDAY ...
A chance to bounce back, a chance to finish - Bangladesh and New Zealand return to the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium for the 2nd ODI, with the visitors holding a 1-0 lead. What began as a test between a settled home side and a new-look touring unit has quickly turned into a high-stakes contest, with Bangladesh fighting to stay alive and New Zealand sensing a chance to seal the series early. Bangladesh's promise, now for precision - There was enough in the first ODI to suggest Bangladesh aren't far away. Half-centuries from Saif Hassan and Tawhid Hridoy, along with a start from Litton Das, showed that the batting has the base, but the lack of a defining partnership proved costly. This is a lineup that has more to offer. Najmul Hossain Shanto at the top and the experience of Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the middle remain crucial, while the likes of Tanzid Hasan will look to build on the strong form he showed earlier in the season. With the ball, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam bring control with pace, while Rishad Hossain adds a spin option suited to these conditions. The pieces are there, it's about putting them together. New Zealand's system in motion - If the first game proved anything, it's that New Zealand's strength lies in their structure. Dean Foxcroft led the way with a composed 59 and chipped in with the ball, while Henry Nicholls once again showed his value with a steady hand at the top. Around them, the support continues to impress. Will Young adds solidity, while Tom Latham provides leadership and calmness in pressure situations. The bowling unit led by Blair Tickner and backed up by Nathan Smith, who combined for 7 wickets, showed how effective discipline and patience can be on these surfaces, with additional depth from players like Will O'Rourke. Even without their biggest names, this side continues to find ways to win, a reflection of their system and adaptability. Form and familiarity - Bangladesh still hold the advantage of familiarity with conditions and a core group that has enjoyed success at home, but New Zealand arrive with a winning habit, having dominated ODI series across opponents in the recent past. What the first game highlighted was how little separates the two sides, small moments, rather than big passages, could decide this contest again. Team form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - BAN - LWLWW | NZ - WWWLW. Conditions and the bigger picture - The Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium is expected to offer another slow, gripping surface where partnerships and game awareness will be key. With valuable points in the race for direct qualification to the 2027 ODI World Cup on the line, the stakes go beyond just this series, as Bangladesh are aiming to stay in contention, and New Zealand are looking to continue their momentum and close it out.

Commentary
