Commentary

Right then, that is it from the first ODI where Australia takes the early lead in the series by getting a dominating win over England. The action now moves to Headingley in Leeds where the 2nd ODI will be played on the 21st of September, Saturday. The first ball will be bowled at 10 am GMT, but as you know you can always join us early for all the build-up to the same. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Mitchell Marsh, the victorious skipper of Australia says that he is very happy with the win. Adds that England got to a great start with the bat, but the way his bowlers fought back was good to see and that set the tone for the chase. Says that bowling Marnus Labuschagne was a forced change due to the injury to Ben Dwarshuis and he wishes that he could take credit for it, but he cannot. Mentions that the illness going around in the team is out of control and they will have to manage that. Says that taking pace off worked in these conditions. Ends by saying that they have a lot of trust in the players who are getting the opportunity and he is looking forward to the next one.

Harry Brook, the captain of England says they did what they said they would do and put the Aussies under pressure, but they couldn't execute with the ball. He adds that it was difficult to bat on in the middle over against the spinners as it gripped, and they also failed to rotate the strike. He mentions that he, Ben Duckett, and others batted well, but they just failed to capitalize at the end, and that cost them, but they'll bounce back in the next game.

Travis Head is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his outstanding unbeaten knock of 154 off 129 balls. He says he got a bit lucky at the start but the wicket was good to bat on and he made the most of it. Adds that they just wanted to bat through and build partnerships and as a team they played spin really well. Talks about the environment in the team and says it's fun and he is enjoying what he is doing for the team.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, England posted a good total but they would have hoped for a lot more with the start that they got. Ben Duckett led the charge for the hosts with fantastic 95 just missing out on his ton. Will Jacks also supported him well with an excellent half-century. The middle order couldn't really take full advantage of the platform but there were some decent contributions from skipper Harry Brook and Jamie Smith. A good cameo from debutant, Jacob Bethell at the death got them over that 300-run mark. For Australia, it was really spin-to-win tactics. Ben Dwarshuis started things with his maiden ODI wicket, but it was the spinners who led the fight back. Adam Zampa and Marnus Labuschagne both picked up three wickets each with Travis Head ending up with a couple while Matthew Short chipped in with one.

England, on the other hand, were pretty good initially with Jofra Archer and Matthew Potts both getting past the outside edges of the batters. Potts finally got the reward by removing Mitchell Marsh, but the hosts couldn't really build on that, so they allowed the Aussies to make a threatening partnership. The bowling change from Harry Brook worked as Liam Livingstone got rid of the dangerous Steven Smith not long after the field restrictions were lifted. However, taking wickets was a struggle for them throughout the game as they only only manged one more with Jacob Bethell getting his maiden ODI wicket. They just did not have any answers to the explosive batting of Travis Head and then the class of Marnus Labuschagne also proved to be too much for their bowlers to handle.

After that, Cameron Green came in and steadied the ship along with Travis Head who kept on smashing it all around the park. The duo  added 73 runs and kept the chasing cruising along but just like Smith, Green also departed on the same score. Head though, did blast his way to a sizzling hundred. What looked like an opening for the hosts was quickly shut down by Marnus Labuschagne who initially rotated the strike and let Head take charge but once the target came in double figures, he started to attack as well. The pair made it look very easy picking their gaps and punishing the bowlers on demand. Marnus also brought up his half-century in the process as well. Both of them remained unbeaten and their massive partnership of 148 runs made sure they got the job done early with six overs still to spare.

Australia got off to a good start but over-aggressiveness from Mitchell Marsh cost him his wicket early. However, that didn't affect Head one bit as he continued to play the only way he knows - 'Attack, Attack, and Attack. Steven Smith joined him and he too didn't hold back and played his shots not letting the bowlers to settle. They utilised the Powerplay nicely and added 76 runs together. Head notched up a quick fifty but unfortunately Smith fell at 32 off 28.

Now that's what you call a clinical victory! This is why they are the WORLD CHAMPIONS, aren't they? A fabulous run chase while keeping control right from the start and more pleasing to have done this without the big guns like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Glenn Maxwell. The man of the moment, Travis Head leaves Trent Bridge as the hero for the Aussies after an unbeaten 154 off 129 balls while Marnus Labuschagne remaining not out on 77 off 61. However, it was not all easy as they were in a bit of a difficult situation while bowling, and surprisingly, the spinners started the fightback and the batters finished the job comfortably. For England and Harry Brook, a lot of learnings to take from this game as they still have four games left in this series to make an impact.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are already out in the middle. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are the two openers for Australia. Jofra Archer has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

... The Run Chase ...

Marnus Labuschagne and Adam Zampa led the charge, claiming three wickets each, while Travis Head wrapped the tail by picking up 2 wickets in the last over of the innings. Matthew Short and Ben Dwarshuis chipped in with one each. Unfortunately, Ben's involvement was limited to just four overs due to an injury sustained while fielding. With the track not offering much to the bowlers and a strong Aussie batting lineup, 316 appears chaseable. Can Australia pull off the pursuit, or will England's bowlers hold firm? The thrilling chase is up next in a while...

Australia's bowling struggled early on, with runs flowing freely, but their exceptional fielding kept them in the contest. The pitch offered little assistance to the bowlers, allowing England's batsmen to dominate. However, the introduction of Marnus Labuschagne in the 33rd over sparked a dramatic turnaround. Australia's attack regained momentum, stifling England's scoring rate. From a potentially daunting 370-plus total well on the cards, with England cruising at 213 for 3 in 33 overs, Australia's bowlers staged an impressive recovery, restricting England to under 320.

The 1st ODI of this series between England and Australia has reached its midpoint, with the match finely balanced. England's cautious beginning, losing just one wicket in the Powerplay, paved the way for Ben Duckett and Will Jacks's explosive 120-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. However, the momentum was lost as Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, and Jamie Smith failed to build on the foundation. England's prospects of posting 370 plus were dashed, as regular wickets and lack of partnerships limited them to 315. Ben Duckett missed out on a well-deserving century by 5 runs and he was the top scorer for the home side.

OUT! CAUGHT! Two-in-two for Travis Head and England are bundled out for 315 runs. Head sees the batter charge and digs it in short over middle and leg, Adil Rashid who has committed for the big slog goes through the shot but only manages to get it high and as far as long on. Marnus Labuschagne settles right under it and takes another easy catch to wrap the innings.

Adil Rashid is the last man in for England.

49.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! Jacob Bethell's debut with the bat comes to an end and Travis Head gets his first breakthrough. Head bowls this shorter in length and on off, Jacob Bethell tries to hit it down the ground but doesn't get the timing quite right. Hits it high in the air and straight to Marnus Labuschagne at long off who takes a simple catch. Bethell makes a crucial 35 off 34!

49.24

FOUR! Edged but will not matter for England! Flighted up on middle and off, Jacob Bethell looks for the big hoick and manages to get an outside edge past the keeper for a boundary.

49.16

SIX! Times it beautifully and sends it up the orbit! Too full from Head, on middle, Jacob Bethell clubs it over mid-wicket for a biggie.

49.11wd

WIDE! Short and wide on off, Jacob Bethell tries to reach for it but the ball is way down off. The umpire calls it a wide.

Who will bowl the last over? It will be Travis Head.

SIX! Launches it into the stands with a clean strike and up go the English supporters to a loud roar! This is full and on the stumps, Matthew Potts clears his front leg out of the line and clobbers it over long on for a biggie. England cross the 300-run mark!

48.50

Short again, on middle and off, Matthew Potts punches it to covers. The crowd appeals to mock the Aussies for a bit of fun.

48.40

Another loud appeal but this time for LBW! Turned down by the umpire. Australia do go upstairs for this one as well. Zampa bowls this shorter in length again and angles it into the right-hander, with the arm, Matthew Potts looks to play with a straight bat but plays for the spin. Misses and gets pinged high on the pad. The UltraEdge shows no spike. The Ball Tracking however shows the pitch of the ball and impact to be right but the wickets to be missing as the ball is projected to be going over the leg stump. Australia burn both their reviews in as many balls.

48.30

A loud shout for caught behind but the umpire turns it down! Australia send it upstairs for a review. This is shorter in length and just outside off, Matthew Potts looks for the reverse sweep but misses. The ball zips past the glove and goes into the mitts of the keeper. The UltraEdge shows no spike and Matthew Potts survives!

48.20

A leg-break, pitching on a nagging length around off and turning away, Matthew Potts looks for a big heave across the line but misses.

48.11

Bowls it nice and full, wider on off, Jacob Bethell premediates and charges down the track but adjusts and manages to get an outside edge to short third for one.

49.4W

OUT!

Misses and gets pinged high on the pad. The UltraEdge shows no spike. Ben Dwarshuis, the debutant has been out of the field for a while now. The visuals now show that he is heavily strapped on his left shoulder. On the other side, Australia have also grappled with injury concerns in their bowling attack, limiting their choices in the T20I series. However, the return of Mitchell Starc, who will spearhead their bowling arsenal, significantly strengthens the team. After a thrilling T20I series that ended in a deadlock, the age-old rivals England and Australia now gear up for an electrifying ODI battle! The first of the five-match series kicks off at the iconic Trent Bridge, Nottingham, and both sides are ready to unleash their firepower. England, boasting some fresh faces, are ready to experiment throughout the series. In a major blow, Jos Buttler remains sidelined, but young gun Harry Brook steps in as stand-in captain, eager to make his mark. The return of the explosive Liam Livingstone adds to the excitement, following his Player of the Series performance in the T20Is. Watch out for Phil Salt too, who’s been consistently delivering in the shortest format and will look to extend that form into the ODIs. While England’s middle order may lack experience, it presents a golden opportunity for rising stars like Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, and Jamie Smith to shine on the big stage. Leading the pace attack will be the fiery Jofra Archer, with support from the lethal Reece Topley. Archer’s workload is being managed, but he’s primed to be a game-changer. Add the likes of Olly Stone, Brydon Carse, and Matthew Potts to the mix, and England’s fast-bowling options look exciting. As for spin, the ever-reliable Adil Rashid will be key, with Livingstone continuing to impress with his improving bowling skills. Australia, on the other hand, are dealing with injuries in the fast-bowling department, but that won’t slow them down. Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne are back to anchor the batting, while the in-form Travis Head will be looking to blast through England’s attack again.
