Commentary
We are back for the second essay. The umpires are back in the middle and the Indian players can be seen in a huddle as well before taking their places on the field. It will be the duo of Henry Nicholls and Devon Conway to open the innings for New Zealand. Mohammed Siraj will get proceedings underway with the ball. Let's play...
... The Run Chase ...
As seen so far, timing the ball hasn’t been straightforward on this slowish surface, and it could slow down further as the day wears on. A couple of dismissals have already underlined the point that anything not struck cleanly off the middle can quickly turn into trouble. Add to that the fact that no total has ever been successfully chased in the four ODIs played at Rajkot, and the task ahead becomes even more challenging for New Zealand. All in all, it sets up for a delicious second half ahead. Stick around as the chase is on the other side.
A 57-run partnership between Rahul and Nitish then kept the innings afloat for India, with the former scoring a fluent and valiant century as well. And when India needed that final act of acceleration, KL Rahul switched the gears in the final few overs and propelled India to a rather respectable total of 284. Honestly, at one stage, it didn't look achievable at all. Bowling-wise, New Zealand were not at all poor given how inexperienced this bowling lineup may look on paper. If we look at the distribution, interestingly, all the pacers conceded more than run-a-ball, but accounted for the most wickets. Whereas spinners, in their combined effort of 23 overs, were miserly, giving away only 89 runs, sharing just two scalps.
Rohit once again failed to convert his start, but the groundwork had been laid. Gill brought up a classy half-century before Jamieson struck to remove him, forcing India into another rebuilding phase. A prolonged boundary drought followed, almost for ten overs, and Kristian Clarke was rewarded for his discipline. The loss of Iyer and a well-set Kohli saw India slip from 99/1 to 118/4. With the seamers getting the ball to nip around and Bracewell exploiting the turn on offer, and choking the scoring effectively. India were in desperate need of momentum and, more importantly, a way to halt the slide. That stability came through a calm, measured stand between the experienced duo of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. The scoring rate never quite took off, hovering under 5s, but the pair did what the situation demanded, stitching together a 73-run partnership to steady the innings before Jadeja departed against the run of play.
It was a watchful start from the Indian openers as they took time to assess conditions. The ball moved around early, with Jamieson bowling two probing maidens and Zakary Foulkes getting the swing to talk. India crawled to just 10 in the first five overs, but anything loose was still put away. Once settled, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill shifted gears smoothly, reeling off a flurry of boundaries. The next five overs yielded 47 runs, and India closed the Powerplay on a healthy 57 without loss.
A fantastic finish with a touch of KLass to this Indian innings. The hosts were pushed under pressure, getting reduced to 118/4, and needed someone to step up. KL Rahul was that man, who averted the crisis once again for his team. New Zealand bowled really well for almost 90 percent of the innings, but their death over bowling is something they won't be too proud of. They conceded 85 runs in the last 10 overs, and India will walk to the sheds carrying the momentum with them. For the positives, though, Jayden Lennox had an outstanding international debut with figures of 1/42 in his ten overs, whereas Michael Bracewell put the breaks in that middle phase.

FOUR! A streaky boundary to end the innings but KL Rahul won't mind it one bit. Fuller in length again but wide outside off, Rahul throws his hands at it and gets a thick outside edge that goes between the keeper and short third for a boundary. 12 off the final over and India finish with 284/7 on the board.
Very full and outside off, Rahul jams it out to covers and opt against the single.
Fuller in length again and outside off, KL Rahul loses his shape as he goes for the big shot and slices it over covers. Devon Conway comes in from the deep but Kyle Jamieson also runs back after it from inside the ring. Conway stops mid way and the ball falls in between the fielders and Rhul even manages to scamper back for the second run.
FOUR! Up and over, that was a poor delivery from Foulkes. Length ball in the slot and around off, that too with mid off inside the ring. KL Rahul walks to the off side and smashes it over mid off for a boundary.
A slower delivery, bowled into the pitch and outside off. KL Rahul pre-empts the reverse hit and goes hard at it but fails to connect.
A single for Siraj that brings a huge cheer from the crowd. Back of a length and outside off, Siraj hops back and bunts it down towards cover-point, turning the strike over to KL Rahul.
WIDE! Back of a length and angled down leg, Siraj looks to tickle it away but misses and a wide is called.
Zakary Foulkes to bowl the final over of the innings? Or will it be Kristian Clarke? The former. 8-0-55-1 so far.

SIX! HUNDRED FOR KL RAHUL! Off just 87 balls. What a way to bring it up as well and that's his 8th century in ODIs. Kyle Jamieson misses his mark again and serves a full toss on middle. Rahul hangs back, gets under it and nails it over long on for a biggie. India's crisis man comes up clutch once again.
Another low full toss, angled into the legs, Rahul hangs back and flicks it way wide of deep mid-wicket and picks up two more runs.
That's nicely bowled by Kyle. Lands the yorker perfectly at the base of the off stump and Rahul gets an inside edge onto the pads, with the ball rolling away into the off side. Another dot ball.
A wide yorker again from Jamieson, seemed more like a low full toss but it dips late. KL Rahul looks to angle it away past short third but misses.
Full and straight, Rahul clears the front leg and pummels it down the ground. The long on fielder cuts it off to his left as the batters pick up two runs.
FOUR! That's why KL Rahul didn't want the single. Full-pitched delivery outside off, a bit too much width on offer. Rahul backs away and smashes it up and over covers for a boundary. He moves into the 90s now.
Penultimate over coming up. The last 4 overs have gone for only 24 runs. Kyle Jamieson (9-2-56-1) to bowl the 49th over.

Good-looking shot from Siraj and he wants the single but KL Rahul isn't interested. Tossed up on middle, heaved away towards cow corner for a dot ball. Jayden Lennox finishes his spell with figures of - 10-0-42-1.
Very full again and outside off, jammed out square through the off side for a single.
Fired in full and straight, KL Rahul clears the front leg and jams the low full toss to the right of the bowler and Lennox makes a good stop as well.
Flatter one on middle and leg, Mohammed Siraj tucks it 'round the corner on the leg side and picks up a single.
Mohammed Siraj walks in at number 9.
OUT! CAUGHT! A maiden international wicket for Jayden Lennox and he's deserved it as well. Nicely tossed up, on off but not quite full enough. Harshit Rana leans on to get under it and lofts it down to long off but without any real timing. Michael Bracewell comes in from the deep and takes a good low catch in front of him. Lennox toiled hard throughout the innings and now gets a wicket in his final over.
280 is looking a bit too far now and KL Rahul will look to keep strike with him as much as possible.
WIDE! Very full and wide outside off, Harshit Rana backs away and leaves the ball alone for a wide.
Commentary
This is turning out to be another cracker-jack of an ODI series. The Kiwis have managed to upstage the hosts and have levelled the series at 1-1 and we now head into the decisive third game. Remember, New Zealand have never won a bilateral ODI series against India, in India and neither team will be backing down in the decider. The 3rd and final ODI will be played in Indore on Saturday, January 18 and will begin at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT). However, you can join us well in advance for the build-up. ADIOS. TAKE CARE.
DARYL MITCHELL IS THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning century. Mitchell says that it is really nice to get the win and they hadn't won an ODI game here for a couple of years. Adds that he is just enjoying his job and representing his country, calling it an honor to play for the 'Silver Ferns.' Mentions that Will Young is a class player and loves batting with him and lauds the way he played and is happy to have built a big stand with him. On Kuldeep Yadav, Mitchell says that he is a world-class bowler and they recognized that as a batting unit and felt that it was necessary to put him under pressure and ends by saying that it feels good to have won the game for your nation.
MICHAEL BRACEWELL, the skipper of New Zealand, says that it was a complete performance from them and he is happy with the win. He says that they bowled really well and he is proud of his team. Further says that the guys adapted the conditions well and Will Young and Daryl Mitchell were excellent with the bat. He adds that they didn't target any particular bowler as such but they adapted with the conditions and played their natural game.
The Indian skipper, SHUBMAN GILL, says that they couldn't pick up wickets in the middle overs, which makes it difficult at the death to stop the batters and even if they had 10-15 runs more, it wouldn't have mattered. Adds that on these types of wickets, once you have a partnership, the set batters need to stick around for longer as it wasn't easy for the new batter and eventually, they did get to a decent total on the board. Reckons that in the first 10-15 overs that they bowled, the ball was doing a bit and they could have been braver in the middle overs. On the fielding lapses, Gill says that even in the last match, they put down a couple of chances and they pride themselves on being a good fielding unit and he feels that once you put down such chances, you most likely lose the game as well.
The Presentation ceremony...
One of New Zealand's stars with the bat, Will Young, is down for a chat with the broadcasters. He says that he is happy with the win, and batting with Daryl Mitchell was fun. Adds that the run rate was over 7 when Kuldeep Yadav came on to bowl and that is when they decided to throw caution to the wind and tried to put the pressure back on India. He adds that sometimes it is hard to score, but the important thing is to back each other while batting. He further says that he has been working on his batting and ends by saying that they had to win the game, and he enjoyed his partnership with Daryl Mitchell.
Earlier in the game, Michael Bracewell won the toss and elected to field, hoping for some dew later in the game but Shubman Gill was happy to bat first and the recent record at the venue suggested that batting first was the way to go. India started slowly but were soon 57/0 in 10 overs. The bowling changes then worked out for New Zealand as Rohit Sharma got out playing a lofted shot and then Gill too fell after notching up a 50. India were soon 118/4 and the Kiwi spinners were tightening the screws. KL Rahul had to play another anchoring knock and got his team out of a fix by building a couple of stands along with Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Rahul went to notch up his 8th ODI ton and took India to a fairly solid total of 284. Debutant Jayden Lennox and Michael Bracewell were the pick of the bowlers for the Kiwis and their spells helped New Zealand restrict India to a total of under 300.
New Zealand are missing the likes of Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, and Tom Latham, among others and a lot rested on the shoulders of their top 4 batters. Devon Conway fell early after a steady start, whereas Henry Nicholls never looked settled on the crease. Will Young was under pressure to perform but was sluggish to begin with and once again, it was Daryl Mitchell who stepped up. Mitchell took all the pressure off Young by finding those boundaries and the duo rotated strike really well and eventually, Young was able to find his range as well. Young stitched together 162 big runs with Mitchell before falling for 87, but Mitchell went on to score an unbeaten hundred and along with a very handy knock from Glenn Phillips, Mitchell managed to see his side over the line.
India had a good score on the board, one that looked pretty big on this deck and their frontline pacers made it look even bigger after that burst in the first 10 overs. Harshit Rana was brilliant and picked up a wicket, whereas Mohammed Siraj was miserly yet again without really creating any chances. The middle phase is where India let the game slip. There wasn't any sign of dew on the field and yet, the spinners simply couldn't get into the game. Kuldeep Yadav was attacked from the get-go and ended up bowling much more defensive lengths than he would have liked. When KD did flight it up, he did create a catching opportunity but Daryl Mitchell was dropped on the fence by Prasidh Krishna and after that, it was one-way traffic. Also, the deficiency of the third spinner is something India aren't used to and the gentle pace of Nitish Kumar Reddy wasn't used all that much.
New Zealand level the series in style and finally, Daryl Mitchell has played a big knock against India that has resulted in a win rather than a heartbreaking loss. It was a perfectly anchored chase from one of the most in-form ODI batters in the world right now and just like against South Africa, India have been forced into a decider in a three-match ODI series at home. This is also New Zealand's highest successful run chase in ODIs in India.
FOUR! What an extraordinary way to finish the game! Back of a length, outside off, Daryl Mitchell moves to his right and scoops it over the keeper's head. He loses his balance and falls on the ground but has a big smile on his face seeing the ball race away to the fence at third man. New Zealand beat India by 7 wickets and level the series 1-1!

Pitched up on off and middle, angling across this time. It is the wobble-seam delivery and Devon Conway manages to block it off.
FOUR! Width on offer but that should have been stopped. Length ball wide outside off, Devon Conway drives it firmly to the right of point where Ravindra Jadeja lets it through the fingers and the ball races away to the fence for the first boundary of the chase.
Lovely line from Siraj, looking to swing it back towards the top of off. Conway gets forward and watchfully blocks it off.

Runs straightaway for New Zealand. Full and straight, swinging in, Devon Conway flicks it away through the gap at mid-wicket and picks up a couple of runs to get off the mark.

Another slower ball, on a good length and around off. Rana hangs back and pushes it out in front of mid off, picking up a quick single.
Foulkes nails the straight yorker now, bowling it on off stump. Rahul digs it out to covers and the 250 IS UP FOR INDIA.
Another slower short ball, outside off, Harshit Rana laces the pull but hits it flat and on the bounce to deep mid-wicket for a single.
The 57-run partnership has been broken, and this couldn't have come at a more opportune time for New Zealand. Harshit Rana walks to the crease at number 8. Was a useful hand in the first ODI with the bat, but can he repeat that once again? Let's wait and see...
OUT! CAUGHT! Cleverly bowled by Zakary Foulkes and Glenn Phillips isn't going to drop that. A slower bumper from Foulkes, banged in over off stump and around shoulder height. Nitish Kumar Reddy looks to pull off the back foot but the ball has gone very soft and NKR doesn't get the required power. Ends up lofting it down to the lone fielder in the deep at the mid-wicket fence and Phillips pouches it safely inside the ropes. NKR departs for 20 (21) and India are now 248/6.
WIDE! Another slower one, seemed like a leg cutter and this is sprayed full and beyond the tramline outside off.
Back-of-the-hand slower ball, bowled slightly into the pitch and on off. KL Rahul waits back and heaves it but hits it flat and down to long on for a single.

Another full toss from Jamieson on middle, this time it is knee-height. KL Rahul clips it away well to the left of deep square leg and picks up a couple of easy runs.
Jamieson goes full and lands it in the blockhole around off. Nitish Kumar Reddy hangs deep in the crease and fores it out to deep cover for just one more.

Full and on off, ends up being a very low full toss. Rahul digs it out to nowhere.
Excellent running. A high full toss on middle, Rahul stays on the back foot and just nudges it away through the gap at mid-wicket. Rahul finds the gap to perfection and picks up two runs as the long on and deep mid-wicket fielders run in and cut it off. 50-RUN STAND COMES UP BETWEEN KL RAHUL AND NITISH!
5 overs left in the innings, and Kyle Jamieson (8-2-49-1) is back on. He replaces Kristian Clarke from this end.

Short and on off, KL Rahul uses the depth of the crease and pulls it aerially to the left of deep square leg for a single. Devon Conway mops it up in the deep, and keeps the batters down to one.
DRINKS BREAK! New Zealand have pretty much dominated the middle phase of this first innings but after having India at 118/4, Michael Bracewell might have missed a trick by not bringing on Kyle Jamieson for a quick burst and trying to get India 5 or even 6 down. The spinners have bowled really economically but KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja are forging a solid stand out there in the middle. With 34 overs done, we will also see the umpires present the option to the Kiwi skipper of choosing between the two balls currently in play for the remainder of the innings. The pitch looks slow and the ball seems to be scuffed up, which might encourage the bowlers in the final few overs as well. Let's see how the first innings pans out. Bracewell obviously chooses the ball that is more scuffed up and it will be Jayden Lennox to continue.

On target, is Kyle! Serves it full, around off, Rohit caresses it to the cover-point region with soft hands. Jamieson starts off with a MAIDEN OVER!
Back of a length, gently shaping away, outside off. Rohit ignores.
Fuller ball, on off and middle, Rohit presses forward and eases it to mid off.
Outside off, on a hard length, moving away. Rohit Sharma lets it be.
A huge appeal for LBW, but not entertained. Going down leg? Michael Bracewell thinks so, and Jamieson too, doesn't look that convinced. New Zealand opt against the review. On a fuller length, angling toward the leg stump line, going down further. Rohit misses the flick, and wears it on the front pad.
On the money! Gets the ball to swing away, outside off, on a good length. Rohit Sharma prods forward to defend, but gets a bit of an inside edge and the ball rolls away, deflecting off the back leg.
All in readiness for the game to begin. A glorious afternoon on what is a festive day in many parts of India, and out walk the two umpires. The Black Caps form a huddle before striding out to the field of play. It will be the pairing of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill to open the innings for India. Kyle Jamieson has the new ball in hand and he is raring to go. A couple of slips in play to begin with. Let's go...
Shreyas Iyer is having a chat with the broadcasters. He says he is not trying to do anything extra and is trusting his instincts. Adds that the more time he spends practising in the nets, the better he feels when it comes to match situations. He explains that he only looks to attack when the ball is in his scoring areas and adds that there are no doubts in his mind at the moment. Reflecting on the previous game, he admits he was too focused on taking singles, which slowed his reactions, and that’s a mindset he wants to move away from going forward. Speaking about batting alongside Virat Kohli, Iyer describes their communication as always being light-hearted, but notes that they make a conscious effort to give themselves a bit of time at the crease together before shifting gears and going for shots and boundaries.
New Zealand (Playing XI) - Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Hay (WK), Michael Bracewell (C), Zakary Foulkes, Kristian Clarke, Kyle Jamieson, and Jayden Lennox (ON ODI DEBUT) (In for Adithya Ashok).
India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy (In for Washington Sundar), Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna.
Shubman Gill, the skipper of India, says that they would have batted considering their last few games here. He adds that he was feeling confident in the last game and it is always good to contribute for the team. Adds that how they came back in the middle overs in the last game was good to watch. Ends by saying that Washington Sundar misses out due to his injury and Nitish Kumar Reddy replaces him.
New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell says they have decided to bowl first, noting that the surface looks a good one to bat on. He adds that if dew sets in later in the evening, it should make batting easier under lights. Bracewell feels his side fought hard till the very end in the previous game and believes the late wickets gave them a chance of pulling things back. Looking ahead, he says the focus will be on striking in the middle overs and putting the Indian batting line-up under pressure. On playing in front of big crowds, he says it is a great challenge. He notes that the conditions are different for them, with around 40,000 fans in the stadium passionately backing the home team, but adds that the side is up for it. He also confirms one change to the XI, with Jayden Lennox coming in to make his ODI debut.
TOSS - Up goes the flip of the coin and it lands in favor of New Zealand. Michael Bracewell opts to BOWL first.
With the series on the line, the stakes couldn't be higher for both sides. Will India’s lower middle order step up again to clinch the trophy, or will the Black Caps bounce back to force a decider? Sit back and relax as we bring you all the latest updates, along with the toss and the team news from this exciting encounter in Rajkot.
New Zealand, however, will not go down without a fight. They posted a competitive total in the first game thanks to Daryl Mitchell's brilliant 84 and a strong start by their openers. Pacer Kyle Jamieson was lethal in the previous match, causing a late collapse, and the visitors will rely on him to unsettle the Indian batters again to keep the series alive.
The spotlight remains firmly on the veteran stars, with Virat Kohli fresh off a sublime 93 and Rohit Sharma looking in good touch at the top. While the batting lineup looks strong, India has been forced to make a change. All-rounder Washington Sundar is out with an injury, opening the door for the squad's new addition, Ayush Badoni. India will be happy to see Harshit Rana perform with the bat but will be hoping that the middle order is able to get them over the line in similar situations in the future.
Welcome to the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot for the second ODI between India and New Zealand! Following a nail-biting finish in Vadodara, the Men in Blue hold a 1-0 lead in this three-match series. The atmosphere is electric as the hosts look to seal the series victory right here in Rajkot.
... MATCH DAY ...
The 3-match ODI series rolls into Rajkot for the second game at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, a venue that does not see international cricket too often after replacing the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground. Only four ODIs have been played here, and the hosts have lost three. It is also a ground where chasing has been a thankless task. Targets of 300-plus have been set three times, and none have been hunted down. In fact, a team batting second is yet to win here. India's win in the first ODI was largely expected against a depleted New Zealand side, but it came with a few nerves. The hosts waited over 20 overs for their first wicket and leaked 88 runs in the final ten, areas they will want to tighten up. Also, the chase followed a similar script. When everything seemed under control with the big names doing the job, the quick loss of Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer within 13 balls suddenly spiced things up. A handy knock from Harshit Rana and KL Rahul staying till the end ensured India crossed the line. The Black Caps can take confidence from how close they pushed India on their home turf. Batting remains New Zealand's stronger suit, and it will need to shoulder extra responsibility to shield an inexperienced bowling attack. Changes for the visitors look unlikely after just one game. India, however, are forced into one, with Washington Sundar injured and Ayush Badoni added to the squad. Nitish Kumar Reddy appears to be the likely replacement if the hosts maintain the same team composition. With history firmly favouring teams batting first, the toss could once again be crucial. Whether Rajkot sticks to the script or serves a surprise remains to be seen.
