Commentary

A fitting end to the ODI series, with the ebbs and flows of the format on full display. A night to remember for Michael Bracewell and his men, all smiles as they pose with the trophy for the cameras. Attention now turns to the more consequential of the two white-ball series, with a five-match T20I series up next. With the T20 World Cup coming up, this series presents an ideal opportunity for both teams to fine-tune their combinations and preparations. The series gets underway in Nagpur on Wednesday, 21st January, with the first ball to be bowled at 1.30 pm GMT (7 pm IST). As always, you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

The captain of New Zealand, Michael Bracewell, shares that it is always a pleasure to play in India in front of such amazing crowds and against a quality Indian team. Mentions that you are always hopeful of playing good cricket, and they stuck to what worked as a team. Bracewell says that they always try to work their way up to take on some of the bigger teams. Tells that he is happy for Daryl Mitchell and he believes that this is the result of his hard work. Praises the debutants for stepping up and he feels the way they delivered speaks volumes about the depth in their ranks.

No surprises that Daryl Mitchell has been named the PLAYER OF THE MATCH as well as the PLAYER OF THE SERIES. Mitchell says that it's really nice to contribute towards the team and it is special to win here in India. Adds that they take pride in building partnerships, and the way Young and Phillips did with him was great. Tells that it is always nice to get stuck into moments in the game with your mates. Mentions that he just tries to be in the present, watch the ball and repeat and make some good decisions along the way. Says that Phillips is a mate, and it was awesome to see him get a 100. He has been out of the game for a while, but he is proud of how he has come back. Ends by saying that he just loves playing for his country, it took a while to get here but domestic cricket has helped him learn about his game a lot.

The captain of India, Shubman Gill says that the way they played after winning the first game was disappointing. Believes that there are areas that need improvement. Mentions that the way Harshit Rana batted at number 8 was a positive and the way pacers operated was good to see. Shares that keeping in mind where the next ODI World Cup is going to be held, they want to give opportunities to Nitish Kumar Reddy. Adds that they want to assess what combinations work for them and what kind of deliveries work for Reddy.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Jayden Lennox is in for a chat. Lennox says that he wouldn't say he found the Indian conditions easy. Adds that putting up winning performances against a star-studded side is very special, and it is incredible to win their first-ever ODI series here. Mentions that he does not overcomplicate his game, he has played on small grounds and takes pride in doing well at the death and creating pressure. Says that the aim for left-arm spinners in limited overs cricket is not be predictable and not let the batters get underneath or use their feet. Further adds that he thought the atmosphere here would make him more nervous, but he handled it well. Tells that they had a relatively inexperienced unit, but they have performed really well in pressure situations. Ends by crediting the New Zealand setup, who are operating and doing a great job.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, New Zealand were reduced to 5/2, losing both openers within the first two overs, and Will Young was unable to make his start count. The recovery was led by Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips, who put together a marathon 219-run partnership. The pair were able to make up for the dots that had built up earlier, largely due to the disciplined bowling from the hosts. Both batters went on to register centuries, with Mitchell notching up his career-best ODI score of 139. Both fell within 7 balls heading into the death overs, which allowed India to claw things back. However, Michael Bracewell and contributions from the lower order helped the Kiwis reach 337.

The problem for India was that on either side of those partnerships, there were no substantial stands of note, and it left Kohli fighting a lone battle for much of the chase. A word, too, for Jayden Lennox, who in just his second ODI stepped up admirably and assumed the role of lead spinner in the absence of Michael Bracewell, who was unable to bowl due to a calf issue. Kyle Jamieson asked all the tough questions in the first Powerplay, while Zakary Foulkes and Kristian Clarke, though not as effective early on, played their part later by breaking the two budding partnerships.

Chasing 338, India lost Rohit Sharma early, while Shubman Gill was undone by a ripper from Kyle Jamieson. New Zealand continued to make inroads with a couple of quick strikes, reducing India to 71/4. Virat Kohli then held the chase together, first with Nitish Kumar Reddy through an 88-run stand, and later with a 99-run partnership alongside Harshit Rana. The stand with Rana, in particular, brought the hosts right back into the contest, but once it was broken, Kohli was left with too much to do.

Another piece of cricketing history has been written by New Zealand in India. They arrived in 2024 carrying the burden of never having won a Test series in the country, and they ticked that box. The Kiwis returned to Indian shores, having never won an ODI series here on their previous 7 tours, and they have now conquered that frontier as well. What makes it even more special is that they have achieved this feat with an inexperienced group, missing several established ODI regulars, and with a number of players touring India for the first time.

OUT! KULDEEP YADAV IS RUN OUT! A brilliant piece of fielding, and Glenn Phillips has the final say in this game. Kristian Clarke lands this on a hard length and on off. Arshdeep Singh pushes it towards cover and sets off for the run. Phillips is quick to move to his right, picks it up, and without much of a backlift scores a direct hit at the batter's end in one motion. Kuldeep Yadav thinks he is in, and he turns back for the second run as the ball deflects away in the deep. However, it has been sent upstairs, and the replay shows that Kuldeep did not slide his bat inside in time. Phillips is ecstatic seeing this on the big screen, and every Kiwi player surrounds him to celebrate this historic win. NEW ZEALAND WIN BY 41 RUNS AND SEAL THE SERIES 2-1!

Direct hit! Kuldeep Yadav was struggling to make his ground. And he is indeed short of his crease, the replays confirm.

45.54

FOUR! Oh..where has that come from? Good length and around off, Arshdeep Singh opens the face of his bat and guides it past point with fine timing for a boundary.

Arshdeep Singh is the last man in.

45.4W

OUT! IN THE AIR....GONE! That is probably the game for New Zealand, and it is pin-drop silence here in Indore. Kristian Clarke goes fuller and on off. Virat Kohli tries to launch it down the ground, but his bat turns in his hands upon contact. He ends up mistiming it high in the air towards long off, where fittingly, it is Daryl Mitchell who settles under it and pouches it safely. It is disappointing for Kohli and India, as he walks back for a magnificent 124 off 108, but it won't be in a winning cause here. The crowd applauds him, but it is the Kiwis who are celebrating.

45.30

Good length and around off, Virat Kohli opens the face of his bat and steers it, but the fielder at short third dives to his left to stop it.

45.24

FOUR! TWO IN TWO! Short of a length and angling down the leg side. Virat Kohli knows that fine leg is up in the circle and helps it past that fielder for another boundary. 50 needed in 28 balls now.

45.14

FOUR! Excellent effort in the deep but goes in vain! Back of a length and on off, Virat Kohli heaves it away off the inside half of the bat as the ball races wide of deep mid-wicket. Glenn Phillips runs to his right and puts a big dive to stop the ball. However, the ball still rolls away, and Phillips tries to kick it away, but his shoulder touches the cushions while doing that. He signals a boundary. Fair play to him.

FOUR! Gets it away somehow! This is fractionally short, on off, Kuldeep tries the reverse scoop and gets some bat on it. The ball goes past the keeper's left arm and it races away.

44.51

Full and at the sticks, flicked to deep mid-wicket for a run.

44.41

Flatter and fuller, on middle, Yadav crouches and pulls it to deep square leg for a run.

Short and going across, cut away to deep point for a single.

44.20

A bit too short, on middle, Kohli hammers it hard but picks out the man at deep mid-wicket. No single taken.

Nearly dragged it back onto the stumps! On a length, outside off, Kuldeep pushes away from his body and gets an inside edge onto the pads.

Who faces the hat-trick ball? It will be Kuldeep Yadav.

43.5W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Mohammed Siraj has been strangled down leg. Two in two for Zakary Foulkes. Full and sliding down leg, Siraj looks to play the glance but the ball grazes the edge and the keeper, Mitchell Hay gets low to his left to gobble it up. Siraj was not sure whether he nicked it but opted against the review after having a chat with Kohli. Foulkes is on a hat-trick.

Massive blow for India. Now, Mohammed Siraj walks out to bat.

43.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! Zakary Foulkes breaks through. Not the best of balls from Foulkes, a full toss, just below the waist. Rana is deep in the crease for a heave across the line. He is late on the shot and spoons it in front of long on. Henry Nicholls comes charging in off the ropes and slides to take a fine catch under pressure. The 99-run stand is broken.

43.30

Dug in short, pace off, around the left shoulder, Rana ducks under it.

Commentary

We are all set for India's reply to get underway. Michael Bracewell and his men disperse from the huddle and take their respective positions on the field. They are followed by the two Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The tall Kyle Jamieson will kickstart proceedings for the visitors. Jamieson to Rohit. Two slips in place. Here we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

India made good use of the conditions early, with Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh striking in their opening overs to leave New Zealand at 5/2. They could not fully capitalise on that start until Rana returned to remove Young, but then Mitchell and Phillips took control as India struggled for answers through the middle. Nitish Kumar Reddy provided some control with an economical spell, and the momentum shifted again when Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep removed the two set batters, helping India pull things back at the death, as at one point, it looked like they would be chasing something over 350. Arshdeep and Rana finished with three wickets each, while Siraj, despite just one wicket, was the most controlled seamer across phases. India now face a challenging chase, but with an unbeaten record at this venue and plenty of quality in their batting, they will fancy their chances. Join us in a bit for the second essay.

One of the two centurions for New Zealand, Glenn Phillips, is in for a chat. Shares that the wicket was a bit two-paced. Feels that it was about building partnerships and as things went on, they managed to find a flow. Mentions that he was a bit itchy around the 30-over mark but Daryl Mitchell took pressure off him. Tells that they were looking at 280 around the 25th over, and he is happy with what they have got on the board. Adds that India bowled well in the middle overs. Shares that Ravindra Jadeja got a couple of balls to hold in the surface and feels the way the Indian bowlers targeted the top of off stump is the way to go for them with the ball.

New Zealand were jolted early with both openers gone for next to nothing, but as has been the pattern this series, Daryl Mitchell stepped in to steady the innings and hold one end firmly. Will Young provided valuable support once again, adding over 50 with Mitchell to revive the innings before departing. With the game still in a delicate phase, Glenn Phillips joined Mitchell and the pair showed remarkable composure, absorbing the pressure before shifting gears. Once set, they took the attack apart, striking boundaries freely and compiling a commanding 219-run stand, with both batters bringing up superb hundreds. Their dismissals briefly slowed the momentum as wickets fell in quick succession, but a late, brisk cameo from Michael Bracewell and a couple of lusty blows by Zakary Foulkes ensured New Zealand pushed comfortably past the 330-mark.

We have witnessed a gripping contest between bat and ball. India struck early and put the Kiwis under pressure, but the BlackCaps responded superbly through the massive Mitchell-Phillips partnership. The Men in Blue, however, fought their way back into the contest towards the end to pull things back slightly. It is hard to judge whether 337 is a strong total on this batting-friendly surface, but New Zealand will take confidence from the fact that in ODIs at this venue, teams batting first have won five times compared to just two wins for sides chasing.

FOUR BYES! Oh, that's gone through. 10 runs off the last 2 balls after the first four dots. Siraj looks to bowl at the stumps as Bracewell moves across again. He swings but does not connect. The keeper, KL Rahul, expecting the wide yorker, is standing a bit to his left than his usual standing position. Rahul dives to his right and gets a hand to it, but it is not enough, and the ball races away. New Zealand finish with 337 on the board.

49.56

SIX! Good proactive batting! Siraj moves away from the wide yorker plan as he spots Bracewell shuffle across the stumps and he looks to attack the stumps. This is full, on off and middle. Michael picks it up nicely over deep square leg for a six.

49.40

Make that four on the bounce! Siraj angles it across the left-hander, into the wicket, off-pace delivery. Bracewell reaches out and flaps it to extra cover.

49.30

Brings the stumps in play and keeps it full, Bracewell can only jam it out back to Siraj, who fakes a throw at the batting end. Three dots in a row.

49.20

The field is set for the wide yorker and Siraj sticks to the plan. Pitches it up, outside off, Bracewell reaches out and digs it out to deep point. Rohit Sharma gets around and cuts it off. No run taken.

49.10

Siraj starts with a slower bouncer, over off. Bracewell hops and reaches out to go big on the off side. Ends up mistiming it but the ball lands right between extra cover and mid off. He does not take the single.

Last over coming up now. It will be bowled by Mohammed Siraj (9-0-37-1). Also, India have been penalised for Slow Over Rate and need to keep an extra fielder inside the circle.

OUT! CASTLED! You miss, I hit, says Harshit Rana. Gets the yorker in, does Harshit. Nice and straight at the stumps. Clarke shuffles across to play the scoop but misses it completely and the stumps are shattered. A handy knock nonetheless from Clarke. 11 (5) for Kristian.

48.56

SIX! Slower ball picked and dispatched! Off-cutter from Rana, on a length, outside off. Clarke walks way across to the off side and swings across the line to clobber it over deep mid-wicket for a six. 15 runs off the over with a ball to go.

48.44

FOUR! Powered away! At 131.8 kph, in the slot, around the off stump, Clarke stands deep in the crease and finds the elevation to loft it over the bowler's head for a four.

48.30

Pace off, on a hard length, over middle. Clarke backs away to flay it over point but is tucked up for room and gets beaten as the ball goes over the blade.

SIX! What a hit! Arshdeep gets the yorker wrong and Bracewell is able to get under the ball. Full and on middle and leg. Michael stays deep in the crease and collapses his back knee to slam it over deep mid-wicket for a six.

47.30

A confident shout for LBW but turned down. Arshdeep Singh is pretty convinced and Shubman Gill takes the review. A searing yorker from Arshdeep, tailing in towards the off stump. Bracewell swings at it but it appears that the ball has gone under the bat before hitting him on the left boot. Oh, the UltraEdge shows a scratch when the ball is near the toe end. The on-field call is upheld.

47.21

Slow bumper, over middle. Clarke pulls it towards deep square leg for a single.

We are into the tail now. Kristian Clarke comes out to the middle.

OUT! CAUGHT! A cheeky attempt, but it does not quite come off for Zakary Foulkes. Not the best of balls by Arshdeep as he gets the yorker wrong. It comes out as a low full toss, on middle. Foulkes backs away a bit and looks to go over the man at short third with a reverse scoop. He fails to get the elevation on the shot as the ball goes flat and straight to Kuldeep Yadav off the face of the blade. Kuldeep makes no mistake and New Zealand are 7 down for 303.

OUT!

42.51

A mix-up but not harm done! A searing yorker at the toes. Virat gets the front pad out of the way and jams his bat down on the ball. It rolls in the vacant square leg region and Kohli is keen for the second but Harshit is late to complete the first run. Virat is almost halfway down the track before he is sent back.

42.42

Jamieson nails the yorker this time, on off, Virat gets his bat down hurriedly and squeezes it out to the left of deep mid-wicket. The call is for two and Rana makes it to the bowling end, where the throw arrives.

However, as long as Virat Kohli is out there, they still have hopes, but he needs support from the other end as well. The Kiwis in the last few overs have done well to keep Kohli off strike, and this will put more and more pressure on him to get quick runs as the asking rate is going up too. DRINKS BREAK! An eventful first 16 overs of the chase and New Zealand find themselves in the ascendancy. India have managed to tick along at a decent rate, but it is the wickets column that will hurt them most. With not much batting to come, if there is to be a rescue act, it will have to come from this pair. The Kiwis will feel that Virat Kohli stands between them and a historic maiden ODI series win in India. With Michael Bracewell unlikely to bowl due to a calf issue, how the stand-in skipper, Daryl Mitchell, manages his options through this middle phase will be interesting to see.

OUT! Given LBW! This looks straight but after a chat with his partner, Mitchell Hay has taken the review. This was the googly from Kuldeep, on a nagging length, on middle. Hay reached out in front and went hard on the reverse sweep. The ball snuck under the bat to catch Hay on the knee roll on the front pad. No bat involved on UltraEdge. It is three reds on Ball Tracking with the ball crashing into the off pole. Mitchell takes a review with him. 3 wickets in 14 balls for India. New Zealand are losing wickets at a crucial juncture in the game.

It flies towards deep square leg, where Kuldeep Yadav runs forward and takes a good catching diving forward with the sun right in his eyes. India will welcome this break in play, as it gives them a chance to regroup and allows Shubman Gill to reassess his options going ahead. Just 3 overs of spin have been bowled so far, and sooner rather than later, Gill will have to turn to the remaining 7 overs, either through Kuldeep Yadav or Ravindra Jadeja. It will be Jadeja to bowl immediately after the break.

DRINKS BREAK! India will be pleased with the progress they have made so far, particularly with the way the seamers have operated. The tight lines and lengths on display will certainly please captain Shubman Gill. As has been the theme of the series, New Zealand’s innings has revolved around Daryl Mitchell, and that will likely need to be the case again today if the Kiwis are to post a challenging total. The spinners are yet to be introduced, but it won’t be long before we see them in action. It will be interesting to see how they fare given the relatively short boundaries, and what Mitchell’s approach will be against them. Time to set the ball rolling in the decider. It is not a full house just yet, but it won't be long before every seat is taken. Mithun Manhas, the president of the BCCI and Mahanaaryaman Rao Scindia, the president of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, do the honours of ringing the bell. Shubman Gill has his men in a huddle near the ropes. Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls walk out to open the innings for New Zealand. A new challenge for the two left-handers with left-arm quick, Arshdeep Singh, in the side today. Arshdeep will open the attack. Conway to face the first ball. Two slips await. Here we go!

The skipper of New Zealand, Michael Bracewell, says that they would have bowled first as well. Adds that now they quickly need to shift their mindset to batting first. Mentions that this is a great opportunity for them to win their first ODI series in India. He hopes that the youngsters take their chance and do well. Informs that they are unchanged.

The captain of India, Shubman Gill says that this decider is a great challenge for them as a side and these are the moments you wait for as a player. Feels that there will not be much dew and reckons that this is a pretty good wicket. He believes that it is good to have a total on the board to chase. Opines that they need to bowl better in the middle phase and look to vary their lengths. Informs that they have made one change with Arshdeep Singh coming in for Prasidh Krishna.

New Zealand (Unchanged Playing XI) - Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Hay (WK), Michael Bracewell (C), Zakary Foulkes, Kristian Clarke, Kyle Jamieson, Jayden Lennox.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh (In place of Prasidh Krishna).

TOSS - The coin lands in favour of Shubman Gill and India have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta and Simon Doull are pitchside. Deep informs that India have been unbeaten in ODIs in Indore, winning all 7 of their games so far. He further says that on average, 8 sixes are hit per inning in ODIs here in Indore. Shares that the boundary dimensions are relatively short, measuring 63 metres on one side and 62 metres on the other, with the straight hit being 71 metres. Informs that the last couple of ODIs here in Indore have seen scores of 399 and 385. Doull believes that this is an absolute belter of a wicket. He further says that the grass covering should offer good pace onto the bat, but he does not expect a lot of seam movement. Deep opines that the grass covering is to ensure that the top surface does not crumble. Simon reckons that bowling stump-to-stump is the way to go for bowlers at this ground.

New Zealand, meanwhile, arrive with momentum after a commanding response in the second game, knowing a series win here would mark a landmark moment in their ODI history in India. Their batting has looked assured, led by Daryl Mitchell, with support from Will Young, Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell, while the newer faces have also stepped up, with Jayden Lennox showing encouraging signs and settling quickly at this level. The bowlers have also shown they can apply pressure, especially Kyle Jamieson, who has been brilliant in both ends of the innings. With the series on the line, execution in key moments, handling pressure and making the most of conditions will be decisive as both sides eye a series-clinching win in Indore. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

India will take confidence from their strong record at Indore and the way their batting unit has largely held firm across the series. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli have provided stability up top, while the middle order featuring KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer has chipped in at important phases. The bowling unit has also found a new source of energy, with Harshit Rana making an immediate impact through his pace, discipline and ability to hit the deck hard, adding an extra dimension to India's attack. The others, however, will be eager to respond after an off day in the second ODI, with the pace attack needing early breakthroughs and the spinners expected to play a controlling role in the middle overs on a surface that can reward disciplined bowling.

Welcome to Indore, where the stage is set for a thrilling finish as India and New Zealand face off in the 3rd ODI at the Holkar Stadium, with the series perfectly poised at 1–1. After two absorbing contests that have seen both teams share the honours, it all comes down to the decider. For the visitors, this clash carries added significance - New Zealand have never won a bilateral ODI series in India, making this a chance to break new ground. India drew first blood in Vadodara with a composed chase built around experience at the top, before New Zealand hit back strongly in Rajkot, showcasing their batting depth and ability to seize key moments under pressure.

... MATCH DAY ...

If India beating New Zealand in the opening ODI came as no surprise, their defeat in Rajkot certainly did. A depleted New Zealand side outplaying a star-studded Indian team was a timely reminder that cricket owes no one guarantees and everything depends on the way you perform on the day. The Black Caps showed their fighting spirit in the first game, and the result in Rajkot would have boosted their confidence and belief.  Bowling remains New Zealand's weaker suit on paper, but in both matches it has punched well above its weight. India, meanwhile, once again struggled against spin. In Rajkot, they managed just 89 runs from 23 overs of spin, lost two wickets, and never truly seized control. In contrast, the Kiwis collected 126 runs off 18 overs against quality Indian spinners, losing only one wicket. The difference lies in their use of the sweep and reverse sweep, options the Indian batters rarely explored. This is clearly an area India will look to address.  The series decider moves to Indore, a venue known for big scores, with an average first innings total of 331. Pace or spin matters less here than intent. For the record, spinners at the Holkar Stadium average 32.5 compared to 48.4 for pacers. It is hard to see India making changes, especially in their batting ranks, but if they do look at their bowling options, Arshdeep Singh could be considered.  New Zealand have already impressed on this tour, and a win here would give them their maiden ODI series victory on Indian soil. It will not be easy, though, with the Men in Blue boasting a perfect record at this venue, 7 wins from 7 ODIs. Still, if the Black Caps keep their fighting instincts alive and get their processes right, they have the ability to push India all the way. It promises to be an entertaining contest, with plenty of fireworks on offer.
