Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Mumbai Indians by 8 wickets

M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

Right then, that is it then from this game and from the first weekend of the 2023 Indian T20 League and it has been a thoroughly entertaining one. Mumbai have kept up their tradition of losing their season opener which now dates back to 2013 and it is 11 losses in a row now for them. Cricketing action in the tournament continues as on Monday, the 3rd of April, Chennai will lock horns against Lucknow in Chennai. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but our build-up will begin much sooner. Cheers!

The Bangalore skipper, Faf du Plessis is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his blistering knock of 73 runs from 43 balls. He says that it is nice to start with a win. Adds that the bowlers were brilliant in the Powerplay, especially Mohammed Siraj who has been doing this for India in recent times. Tells that there was something for everyone on this wicket and credits the ground staff. Mention that he is playing here for the first time and the atmosphere was great. Says that it was good to bat along with Virat Kohli and adds that it's a perfect start for them.

The presentation ceremony...

The man of the moment, Virat Kohli is down for a quick chat. Starts by saying that coming back home after so many years feels phenomenal and lauds the efforts of Tilak Varma to get Mumbai to that score. Adds that they backed themselves and Faf du Plessis started taking on the new ball first and later he too joined in. Says that the wicket was good but their bowlers hit the right lengths and areas. Mentions that the crowd inside the stadium was amazing and they tried to use the backing of the crowd to fire themselves up. On Karn Sharma, he says that it was a top effort from him and he got them on the front foot and even in the nets it was difficult to get him away and he was ready to play. Ends by saying that they have been one of the most consistent teams over the years and it is all about staying focused and building up momentum.

Mumbai's skipper, Rohit Sharma says that they didn't have a great start in the Powerplay with the bat, but credits his players for getting to 170. Adds that they didn't turn up with the ball and couldn't execute their plans. Mentions that Tilak Varma is a very good player and he was outstanding, but he did not get much support from the others and they were probably 30-40 runs short. Tells that someone needs to step up and fill the place of Jasprit Bumrah. Says they have a lot of youngsters and they will need to back them up to give them the confidence to perform well.

Earlier in the game, Faf du Plessis won the toss and put Mumbai into bat first and this turned out to be an excellent decision. Akash Deep nicked off the Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma early and Mohammed Siraj soon got rid of Ishan Kishan as well. Mumbai were three down in no time and it took a colossal effort from Tilak Varma to pull them out of trouble. Verma added on 50 runs with young Nehal Wadhera before the latter got out. Verma carried on and ended the innings with an unbeaten 84 off 46 balls. Karn Sharma bowled beautifully in the middle overs for Bangalore and picked up two wickets with the likes of Siraj and Topley being economical as well. 172 runs to get in this stadium is never a difficult task but in front of a home crowd, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli remained cool under pressure and Bangalore simply cruised to victory.

Mumbai were never in the game and even after a strong finish with the bat, the start with the ball let them down once again. This along with Jofra Archer dropping Virat Kohli early on off his own bowling pegged Mumbai back and they simply couldn't control the middle phase either. There were too many boundary balls and the inexperienced likes of Jason Behrendorff, Arshad Khan and Cameron Green were hit away for plenty. Khan and Green, the debutants did manage to pick up a wicket each toward the end but by then it was all over. Piyush Chawla and Jofra Archer bowled well but they too couldn't get the breakthrough when required.

It was a merry return to the Chinnaswamy Stadium for Bangalore and their star man Virat Kohli. Kohli along with Faf du Plessis rolled back the years as the two openers put on a magical show out in the middle. The skipper, Faf was the aggressor and put the Mumbai bowlers away with disdain. The pair put on 148 runs for the first wicket and broke the back of the chase. Faf reached his fifty first and surpassed the 70-run mark before getting out. Once Kohli got to his fifty, he went into overdrive and kept on smashing the ball to remain unbeaten on 82 off 49 balls and even hit the winning runs.

Wow, what a performance this has been with the bat from Bangalore and they have rocketed to the win here. Mumbai, on the other hand, are left dumbfounded as yet again, they get their Indian T20 League campaign underway with a loss.

We are back for the chase! The players of Mumbai are in a huddle just outside the boundary ropes. They spread out to take their respective field positions. Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli are the two openers for Bangalore. Mumbai have used their impact player as Jason Behrendorff replaces Suryakumar Yadav, and he has the new ball in his hand as well. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Mumbai have posted a fighting total here and they will need all of their bowling resources to defend this one. Bangalore will be quite confident of chasing this down with the depth that they have in their batting. Let's see how the chase unfolds.

The hero for Mumbai, Tilak Varma is up for a chat. He says that his plan was to take his time and get used to the conditions. Tells that he was backing himself for the big shots, but says that it was tough facing the spinners. Mentions that against Mohammed Siraj he knew that he would bowl wide yorkers and is happy that it worked out in the end.

Bangalore will be delighted with their bowling effort as they know that on this ground bowlers struggle a bit. However, a concern for them would be the shoulder injury of Reece Topley who could not finish his spell due to that. Karn Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets while everyone else who bowled got a wicket to their name except Glenn Maxwell. They will be disappointed a bit as they conceded a bit too many in the death overs.

Mumbai did not get going at all in the Powerplay as they lost three wickets. Skipper Rohit Sharma was given a life, but he couldn't make the most of it. Suryakumar Yadav also got out cheaply, but Tilak Varma fought like a warrior with some help from debutant, Nehal Wadhera as both of them added 50 runs together before the latter was dismissed. Verma continued to chip in with runs while losing partners at the other end. He ended up on an unbeaten 84, and some lusty blows in the end from Arshad Khan took them to a decent total.

It was a sweet homecoming for Bangalore until the Tilak Varma storm arrived. He has played an extraordinary knock of 84 runs off just 46 balls to give some hope to Mumbai. However, Bangalore will still be the happier side going into the break as this ground is known for big scores.

TOSS - Up goes the coin and it lands in favor of Bangalore and they will BOWL first.

Mumbai, the five-time champions, on the other hand, had a season to forget in 2022, and they will want to change things this time around. They will surely miss Jasprit Bumrah, but Jofra Archer is fit and he will want to make an impact. They have added Cameron Green which fills the void that Kieron Pollard left and with Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma already in their squad, their batting looks really solid. However, they struggled with their bowling last season, and they will want to improve that to challenge the hosts here. Will they be able to get the better of Bangalore? Or will the hosts start their campaign with a victory? We will find out soon. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

Bangalore will be led by Faf du Plessis once again and like every season they have a good squad. Virat Kohli has been in good form recently for the national side and will look to continue that. Bangalore have also added a couple of Kiwi talents in the form of Finn Allen and Michael Bracewell which gives them plenty of options. They can choose from different combinations which makes them one of the favorites for the tournament. Also, they are back home after a long time and will want to give their fans a victory to cheer for and start on a positive note.

Hello and a warm welcome folks! It is time for match number 5 in the Indian T20 League and it is a big one as Bangalore takes on Mumbai in a blockbuster clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Whenever these two sides meet it is always an entertaining encounter and we can expect nothing less here too. Also, the crowd will be electric inside the Chinnaswamy as the tournament returns to Bengaluru after a big gap.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 16th edition of the Indian T20 League has nicely gathered pace and we now reach the end of a blockbuster weekend with the last two teams set to play their first game of the season. It is time for match number 5 where Bangalore will clash against Mumbai at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and even though Bangalore have not won a single trophy so far, the rivalry that the fans feel towards the five-time champions is at the highest level and puts ample spice into this game. The hosts had a decent campaign last time around as they finished fourth with 16 points having won 8 out of the 14 games and they beat Lucknow in the Eliminator. They stumbled against Rajasthan in Qualifier 2 and will hope that they can go a couple of steps further in this campaign. Mumbai had a forgettable season last year as the most successful franchise found itself at the bottom of the table, winning just four games in all but this is a side you can never count out in any competition with the quality and winning mentality they possess. Kieron Pollard decided to hang his boots as a player for the visitors and has joined the coaching staff with Rohit Sharma hoping to lead this side to its sixth title. A side that makes very few changes in between the mega auctions, Mumbai released Daniel Sams, Murugan Ashwin, Tymal Mills, Jaydev Unadkat, Riley Meredith, and Fabien Allen among others. They have maintained their batting core comprising Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis, and Tristan Stubbs with the latter two yet to join the squad and have strengthened with the addition of Cameron Green who was bought for a massive INR 17.50 crore. With Jasprit Bumrah and Jhye Richardson ruled out of the competition, the pace bowling responsibility will fall on Jofra Archer, Duan Jansen, Jason Behrendorff, and Arshad Khan. They will have to rely heavily on their uncapped homegrown bowling talent as their bowling unit seems quite depleted. Bangalore have not opted to make wholesale changes as they released just 4 players ahead of the auction. Josh Hazlewood is an injury concern whereas Will Jacks has been replaced by Michael Bracewell in the squad. They have added David Willey to a squad filled with stars as their batting order looks quite potent. They will be captained by Faf du Plessis who will have Virat Kohli, Finn Allen, Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, and Rajat Patidar at his disposal. Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Siddarth Kaul, and Shahbaz Ahmed will be joined by Reece Topley in the bowling unit with Wanindu Hasaranga missing the first few games. This is a ground that has historically favoured the bowlers but since the ground dimensions are small, the batters could score freely if they get settled in the middle. Another cracking game coming our way and which of these fan-favourite teams will come up on top in this fixture? We will find out soon.
