Commentary

Right! Two intriguing matches in Colombo, where 240 ended up being a par score. Both sides will rue the missed chances in either of those games, so the series status reflects fairly. We now move to Pallekele for the third and final ODI, with the pitch and combinations keeping the think tank on their toes. The match is scheduled to be played on Tuesday, 8th July, 2025, with the first ball at 9 am GMT, but our buildup will begin well in advance. So do tune in early. In the meantime, you can check out how the Ashes rivals are performing in their respective Tests across two continents. Enjoy. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

The victorious skipper of Bangladesh, MEHIDY HASAN MIRAZ, confidently says that he believed that 248 was enough as everyone saw in the last match that 240 was difficult to chase. On what was going through his mind when Madushka and Kusal Mendis were batting, or even when Janith Liyanage was playing, Mehidy says he just told Tanvir (during the second wicket stand) that his side needs those two wickets as without wickets Bangladesh cannot win. Stresses that he just thinks positively and searches for wickets and moves ahead. On his young side doing well, Miraz admits that it has been tough but still his unit is trying. Is happy that his players came back strongly and hopes to have a great match in the final ODI.

The captain of Sri Lanka, CHARITH ASALANKA, on being asked whether the toss mattered, does not feel that it did. Feels that in the first half, his bowlers did a great job, restricting Bangladesh under 250 after they got a great start. Bluntly says that it was the batting which let them down and all the batters barring Janith Liyanage should take responsibility. On being asked whether the wicket of Kusal Mendis was the key, Asalanka smiles and admits that both, Mendis' and Madushka 's wickets were key but after that, himself and the middle order could not capitalize. Regarding a tough wicket to bat upon, Charith denies it, saying that it was a bit different in the second innings but once his batters got a start like that, they should not be saying anything about the pitch. On the must-win third ODI, CA says that it is 1-1 now and a must-win game, so will have a chat with the group and come hard again.

BANGLADESH'S TANVIR ISLAM HAS BEEN ADJUDGED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH, for his brilliant bowling figures of 5/39. Through a translator, Tanvir conveys that he felt well on claiming his maiden 5-fer. Adds that he bowled in the right areas. Details that the wicket was much better as compared to the one in the last game. Feels that hence, bowling was challenging, but he stuck to bowling tight lines. On his belief whether 248 was defendable, Tanvir says that his captain gave him confidence and asked him to bowl with an open heart. Further says that he was asked to try to contain and that's what pumped him up.

... THE PRESENTATION ...

Earlier, in the first innings, Bangladesh huffed and puffed to 248. It was a determined batting approach, much improved from the first game, where the batters tried to have some kind of a partnership. Half centuries from Parvez Hossain Emon and Tawhrid Hridoy kept the visitors on good stead but they lost their way towards the end. From 204/5, they collapsed to 218/9 and had it not been for a crucial 10-wicket stand of 30 between Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mustafizur Rahman, the match result would have been different. Asitha Fernando bowled his heart out, picking up 4 wickets while Hasaranga continued his good form, picking up 3 wickets. Please stay tuned for the presentation ...

Full marks to Bangladesh. They were hammered with the new balls but they did not lose belief or hope. They trusted themselves and found a way to get that second wicket. And once they got that, started running through the batting lineup. Then again, towards the end, they managed to keep their calm even when Liyanage was going well. Some pressure was even being seen on the visitors, dropping as many as 3 catches but luckily for them, they did not come back to haunt the visitors. Tanvir Islam and Shamim Hossain were the chief destructors, choking the Lankans with combined figures of 19-3-61-6. Tanvir went on to pick up his maiden 5-fer as well while Mehidy chipped in with some economical bowling as well. Pace was not Bangladesh's friend in this game but when it mattered, Mustafizur bowled really well at the death.

There was a reason why both captains wanted to bat first at the toss. In the absence of dew, the ball was not quite coming onto the bat in the second innings, post the 10th over. The Lankans got off to a flier racing to 75/1 in the 10th over. However. once Nishan Madushka was dismissed, the wickets started to fall regularly and the match started to go out of the Lankans' grasp. However, Janith Liyanage held one end and kept fighting, as late as the 48th over, registering a 58-run stand for the 9th wicket with Chameera, but unfortunately for the home side, it was too much to do for one player.

Finally, the losing streak ends for Bangladesh. They have been on a 7-match losing streak in ODIs, with their previous win coming way back in November 2024, against Afghanistan in Sharjah. It is also just their 5th win in ODIs in Sri Lanka.

OUT! BOWLED! Tanzim roars back on the next ball! Full and straight, Dushmantha Chameera swings hard to the leg side but misses. The ball cannons into the off stump and sends it cartwheeling! BANGLADESH WIN BY 16 RUNS AND LEVEL THE 3-MATCH ODI SERIES 1-1!

48.41

DROPPED! My, my, my! Simply unbelievable. Tanzim had the opportunity to finish this match. Back of the hand slower delivery, outside off, Fernando looks to heave it over the leg side but is done in by the slower ball. Gets a top edge which goes miles in the air, just beside the pitch. The bowler himself runs to his right, settles himself under the catch but spills it! A single taken. 17 more needed from 8 balls.

48.30

Another slower ball, short in length, Asitha looks to slash it through the off side but misses. Tanzim thinks he heard a noise and skipper Mehidy goes for the review. UltraEdge is flat as a pancake when the ball is near the bat. No more reviews left for Bangladesh now.

48.20

Slower ball, on a length, Asitha Fernando swings hard but misses.

48.11

Full, outside off, Dushmantha Chameera backs away and hammers it towards long off. Trusts his partner and takes the single. 19 needed from 11 balls.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! The Fizz strikes eventually and dare we say, it is the biggest wicket of the match! Full, on middle, Liyanage looks to work it to the leg side but is early into the shot. Gets a leading edge which goes straight up in the air. Mustafizur stutters a bit but steadies himself and gets across, nearly in front of the non striker and takes the catch. Bangladesh are cock-a-hoop while Liyanage is distraught. Departs for 78 (85) and the whole of Colombo stands up as one to applaud him off the ground. The fighting 58-run stand has been broken and Sri Lanka are 228/9, needing another 21 from 16 balls!

47.16

SIX! Ho ho ho! Is that a stamp of authority or what? Full and straight, on middle and off, Janith Liyanage comes forward and drives it straight back over the bowler's head. Initially, it seems like a mishit but as the ball gathers more air, the distance is covered as well as it lands beyond the sightscreen!

Commentary

The players are back out in the middle. Pathum Nissanka and Nishan Madushka are the openers for the Lankans. Hasan Mahmud has got the first new ball in his hand. Madushka to face. Here we go!

Welcome back. Time for the run chase. Sri Lanka have been asked to chase more or less the same score which they had set in the first ODI. For a major part of that run chase, Bangladesh looked largely untroubled and their collapse can only be put down to lack of application. The hosts will believe that they have got better batters than their opposition and will aim to seal the series tonight itself. If any, the ball swung a lot in the first few overs on Wednesday. If Bangladesh can use that to their advantage and take 2-3 quick wickets, the Lankans could be in a spot of self check.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, as we head into the second innings, Sri Lanka will fancy their chances of chasing this target. The pitch looks good for batting, and they will hope that it plays the same. However, Bangladesh do have a handy pace trio and some clever spinners, and if they strike early and apply pressure in the middle overs, this match can swing either way. Stay tuned for the gripping chase!

The credit for Bangladesh’s late stumble goes squarely to the Sri Lankan bowling unit, which was clinical and relentless. Asitha Fernando was exceptional with the new ball and at the death, claiming 4 wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga, the crafty leggie, once again spun his web and took 3 wickets, and broke crucial partnerships in the middle and end overs. Theekshana and Wellalage kept things tight, even without wickets, allowing others to attack. Overall, it was a well-rounded bowling display, where each bowler played his part and didn’t allow Bangladesh to run away with the game. Also, a special mention to the fielding of the players of Sri Lanka, who were exceptional in the field, from doing run-outs to taking some good catches and saving runs, all in all, they gave their best there.

Tawhid Hridoy stepped up under pressure and stitched another valuable stand with Emon before the latter fell to Hasaranga. Hridoy showed patience, anchoring the middle overs and slowly building up his innings before reaching a gritty half-century. But with heat and humidity wearing down the batters, Jaker Ali cramped up in the middle of his innings, and got out in the process. Despite late fireworks from Tanzim Hasan Sakib, the tail collapsed quickly. Bangladesh lost their last five wickets for just 44 runs, wasting the platform they had built in the first 20 overs.

Their innings started with early nerves as Tanzid Hasan, their standout performer from the first match, departed cheaply. But the pair of Parvez Hossain Emon and Najmul Hossain Shanto steadied the ship with a steady half-century partnership. Emon looked fluent and fearless, reaching his maiden ODI fifty. Shanto too looked composed before falling to skipper Asalanka at the wrong time. Mehidy Hasan Miraz’ poor form continued with the bat, falling for a single-digit score again, which pushed the pressure back on the middle order.

Bangladesh once again have found themselves repeating a familiar pattern, from a promising start to followed by a middle-order wobble and ending with a score that’s respectable but possibly below par. Opting to bat first, they showed intent early on but couldn’t convert their solid platform into something more substantial. After getting to 110/2 around the 20-over mark, with both batters set, they looked set to push well beyond 275 easily. However, Sri Lanka’s bowlers, particularly their spinners and death-over specialists, pulled things back sharply. Bangladesh have been bowled out for 248 in 45.5 overs, a total that feels competitive but not commanding, especially how the pitch has played, where the batters were playing shots through the line.

45.5W

OUT! LBW! Excellent review by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have left 25 balls unused. A touch short in length, outside off, Mustafizur Rahman stays back in his crease to defend but misses. The ball lands and spins back in, catching him on the pads. Hasaranga appeals and extends the same, but the umpire is as still as stone. The keeper, Kusal Mendis, is confident along with his bowler and skipper Charith Asalanka signals for the review. Nothing on UltraEdge when ball goes past the bat, while Ball Tracking shows it to be hitting the top of middle and leg sticks. The decision has to be overturned and the 30-run stand has been broken. BANGLADESH BOWLED OUT FOR 248 IN 45.5 OVERS!

45.41

Outside off, another slog sweep, this time along the ground, to deep mid-wicket, for a single. This stand is now worth 30 (23).

45.36

SIX! Second one in the over and this is even better! The googly, around off, Tanzim Hasan Sakib gets right underneath the ball and swings it straight back over the bowler and the sightscreen! Moves to 32 (20) with his second six.

45.20

Outside off, Tanzim swings again, only to miss.

45.16

SIX! MURDERED! This won't improve Asalanka's mood one bit. Tossed up, outside off, Tanzim Hasan Sakib gets down on a knee and slog sweeps this over long on! Bangladesh touch the 240-mark!

This last-wicket stand is causing a bit of a headache to Charith Asalanka. After the revised calculations involving the hydrating breaks and the cramping interruptions, the umpires have given the cut-off time as 1250 GMT to begin the 50th over. We are around 15 minutes away from the same.

Back of a length and around middle, seems to be a slower one, Tanzim Hasan Sakib is a tad early in his shot as he goes to pull it but the ball comes later than he expects. Gets it off the bottom part of the ball and goes into the pitch. The bowler collects it.

44.42

Bowls it full and around off, Tanzim Hasan Sakib clears out his front leg away and looks to heave it across but miscues it off the cue end of the bat to the right of long on. The fielder quickly gets to the ball but both batters take two runs.

The physio is called for a concussion check. Nothing too serious, as Mustafizur Rahman is smiling and even indicates a thumbs up to his dugout. But protocols are protocols and they need to be followed. Even if the ball just grazes the helmet, the concussion check needs to be done. All set and done now.

44.31lb

Ouch! Short of a length and angling in, follows the batter, Mustafizur Rahman tries to sway away from it but gets cramped up for room as he goes to duck it. The ball follows and clips his helmet before going over the leaping keeper behind the wickets. They take a leg bye.

DRINKS BREAK. 16 runs in the last 2 overs. All of a sudden, the pressure is shifting back onto the bowling side. This is what good sides do. They keep soaking up the pressure and work on those small small singles. Then suddenly, when they feel that the bowling side is getting a bit too preoccupied in just stopping the singles, boom. That's exactly what Hasaranga has done. He has got the target down under 100 and with every 10 runs being shaved off, the visitors will feel the pressure as well. The fact that one wicket could actually derail this chase, could force the tourists try even more desperately to pick up a wicket and in that process, concede a few runs. Also, with Shamim and Tanvir to bowl out, whom does Mehidy turn to? He will have to go back to pace which has not been very kind to his side so far.

Darted in quicker and full, down the leg side, Janith Liyanage comes forward and looks to tickle it fine but misses and the keeper collects it to his left behind the stumps. OUT! CAUGHT! MAIDEN ODI WICKET FOR SHAMIM! The pressure tells and a mistake is committed! That is a team wicket. In Powerplay 2, the fielding captain is allowed to keep four fielders outside the 30-yard circle. But Mehidy chose to keep only three, making singles difficult for the batters to attain and the temptation of going over the top dangling. And the entire bowling unit has done well in cutting off both, boundaries and runs. Both, Asalanka and Kamindu tried to veer away from that temptation of going over the top, but eventually, Asalanka's patience wears off. A short ball, around middle and leg, Charith Asalanka looks to heave it over mid on but plays a bit too early. Seems like this is the DRINKS BREAK. A bit of a good passage of play for the visiting side. The last 6 overs have gone for just 17 runs and yielded 2 wickets. The required rate is not a question at all, but with the runs not coming easily all of a sudden, Bangladesh are trying to entice the batters into committing mistakes. It definitely seems as if fast bowling is a lot easier to play as compared to spin bowling, so expect a lot of tweakers in this chase. Hard length and around off, Nishan Madushka taps it towards cover point and wants to have a single. Kusal Mendis responds and takes a few steps forward but is sent back by Nishan as the backward point fielder gets to the ball with a slide and cuts it off.

6.50

Nagging length and outside off, Nishan Madushka stands tall and flat-bats it to mid off.

6.41

A full toss, around off, Kusal Mendis gets a bit surprised and only manages to drill it off the inner half of the bat towards mid on. A single taken but Mendis will think that he has missed out on this opportunity.

6.34

FOUR! POUNDED! Mendis has come out with a mood to take the bowling on. Similar to the previous ball and hence, the stroke is also the same. Only on this occasion, the pull shot is delayed slightly, but still, it is not met perfectly. The ball runs off the inner half of the bat but the timing is good enough to take the ball to the mid-wicket fence, between mid on and short mid-wicket. The stand moves to 33 (27).

6.20

A short ball, outside off, 129 kph, Kusal Mendis tries to take it on, looking to pull it over mid-wicket but is early into the stroke. The ball comes slowly off the surface and goes off the toe end of the bat, towards mid on.

FOUR OVERTHROWS! Tough luck for Bangladesh. Remember the great Kapil Dev's words around 2007, when he had opined that overthrows off deflection from the stumps should not be considered. Landed outside off, Mendis looks to punch but his bottom hand comes off the bat. The ball goes towards point. Najmul Hossain Shanto charges onto the ball from backward point, picks the ball up and has a needless shy at the bowling end. Hits the stumps directly but to his bad luck, the ball deflects towards the mid-wicket boundary. Well, the throw was needless, no argument, but shouldn't some consideration be given for direct hits, to encourage good fielding?

4.50

Correction from Mahmud, landing it full and just outside off, Kusal defends.

4.44

FOUR! Loose ball and punished. A bit too straight, on middle and leg, Mendis stands his ground and whips it over mid-wicket for his first boundary.

4.30

Outside off, punched straight to point this time.

4.20

This one also nips back in a long way, from outside off, Kusal Mendis looks to punch but is cramped for room and gets a bottom edge to the off side.

4.11

Good running. On a length outside off, jags back in sharply, Nishan Madushka looks to push it through the off side but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads. The ball rolls to the off side, beside the pitch and Mendis quickly calls him through for the single. The bowler joins the running race with Mendis and tries to cause an under-arm flick at the striker's end but misses. Would not have mattered as Kusal was easily in.

OUT! LBW! Tell you what, Bangladesh will be honest enough to admit that they have got a lucky one here. On a good length, outside off, Nissanka stays back to work it to the leg side but the ball pitches and then shoots a fraction low, catching the batter in his crease. Nissanka is unable to adjust to the sharp shoot and misses his flick, getting hit on the pads. Tanzim appeals and for a while, it seems like the umpire will not give it out. But almost when the appeal is about to die down, the finger goes up! Nissanka takes the review, after a small chat with his partner and first up, UltraEdge detects no bat involved. Time for Ball Tracking. Clipping the outer half of leg stump! Umpire's call on hitting which means that the review will be retained but Nissanka has to go! Departs for 5 (8) and Sri Lanka are 6/1 after 2 overs! Need another 243 from 288 balls.

Given out LBW! To the naked eye, that seemed to be going down the leg side and probably that's why, Nissanka has reviewed this. The ball did stay low a fraction but the angle definitely seemed to be going down leg. Or maybe not! Umpire's call it is on hitting the leg stump and Nissanka has to go!

FOUR! There is the first boundary of the chase! On a length, outside off, Pathum Nissanka punches it through the gap between cover and point, rising with the bounce, finding the gap and boundary. Farveez Maharoof on air remembers that this is the same way Nissanka got off the mark and also his century in the second Test. Amazing memory.

1.20

1.10

A quick short ball, around off, Pathum Nissanka goes for the pull but is hurried into the shot. Gets hit on the back of the bat and the ball rolls down on the off side.

A fair bit of movement for Hasan Mahmud in that opening over. Will be interesting to see how does the second new ball work out. In case you have not realized, Jaker Ali is the man with the gloves for Bangladesh tonight, in the absence of Litton Das. Here's Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

44.50

Gets hit on the front pad and there goes a big appeal for LBW and the umpire raises his finger. OUT! CAUGHT! Wicket number 4 for Asitha Fernando and this is quickly spiralling down now, for Bangladesh. A quick short ball, outside off, Hasan Mahmud goes for the pull but that proves to be his undoing. He is comprehensively beaten by pace as the bat comes through way after the ball kicks off. The top edge is induced and it is pretty meek. Goes only as far as the area near silly mid on. The keeper and short mid-wicket, both, go for the catch but the latter calls for it and Nishan Madushka takes it easily. Second wicket in the over and Mahmud departs for a 2-baller. On a length and on the pads, Hridoy clips in the gap towards deep mid-wicket and runs the first one quickly and he calls for the second one. Tanzim Hasan Sakib responds and takes a few steps forward but then after seeing the fielder throw, he sends Hridoy back, but to that time, Tawhid was already halfway down the wicket. The fielder Nishan Madushka runs across to his left from deep mid-wicket and collects the ball very quickly and throws it to the non-striker's end, after seeing which batter is short of his crease. Hridoy tries to come back to his crease but the bowler Asitha Fernando collects the ball and whips the bails off, falling Hridoy short by a mile. He gets angry as that was his call for the second and he was the set batter, so Tanzim should have sacrificed his wicket if it was there. The umpire gives him his bat and he walks off. Hridoy departs after his fifty and Bangladesh are in deep trouble.

40.11

Hard length and around off, Tanzim Hasan Sakib manages to push it off the bottom part of the bat to long on for one, as he goes for a flick shot.

145/5 in 30 overs of the middle phase. The Lankans will take it, because of the number of wickets. Powerplay 3 time now. 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle till the end. If the visitors bat out their overs, they can still get to somewhere between 270 and 290. All depends on how long Tawhid Hridoy bats.

Not surprising, because in his 34 balls, only 2 have gone to the boundary. That means, he has scored 12 runs in the remaining 32 balls and has run very hard between the wickets. At the same time, he has run hard for Hridoy's runs as well. Out comes the physio with some water from the 12th man. Up and running, is Jaker.

37.14

MISFIELD, FOUR! Landed outside off, Tawhid Hridoy goes back and opens the face of his bat at the last moment, getting it to the right of short third. The fielder at short third gives it a chase but then slows down, on seeing Pathum Nissanka race across to his left from deep cover. He lets it go, thinking that Nissanka will stop the ball but the latter dives over the ball and it goes through. Hridoy moves to 41 (58) and that is just his second boundary. The bowler is not impressed with the fielding.

Change of gloves for the batters. It is another hot and humid day in Colombo.

Hard length and around off, Tawhid Hridoy goes back and pulls it to deep mid-wicket for one.

36.31

Short, outside off, Ali punches it through cover for a single. The stand moves to 30 (46).

36.20

Good game awareness by Tawhid Hridoy. Full, on off stump, Jaker drives it straight back. The bowler tries to stop it with his right hand and just about gets some fingertips on the ball. Deflects it onto the stumps behind and appeals for the run out. Tawhid is seen sprawled on the ground and the Lankans start to celebrate. But the replay shows that Hridoy, who was backing up, actually slipped on his back and that actually helped him skid his bat into the crease! Just in the nick of time!

Gone? This could be trouble for Hridoy. Jaker has driven the ball straight back and Chameera has tried to stop that, inadvertently deflecting the ball onto the stumps behind. Hridoy tried to get back, but did he, in time? Yes, just in.

36.10

On a length, outside off, Jaker Ali looks to punch but gets a bottom edge, which goes past the stumps behind. Good take by the wicketkeeper, moving across to his left.

Meanwhile, in Birmingham, KL Rahul has been cleaned up by Josh Tongue, for a fighting 55 but Rishabh Pant has come out firing on all cylinders. He has got off to a flier, racing to 31 from just 19 balls, with 4 fours and 2 sixes. India are 164/3 and have got a decent lead of 344 on Day 4, but with the weather forecast looking iffy for both, today and tomorrow, quick runs might be the need of the hour, for a timely declaration.

FOUR! Don't think Chameera will mind that. On a length, outside off, Jaker Ali has a hack through the line and gets it off the inner half of the bat. Luckily for him, it flies over short mid-wicket and races to the fence behind.

Full and straight, clipped to short mid-wicket.

Ball choice. Which one will Sri Lanka take? Only one ball out of the two used from the start will be used for the remaining 16 overs. Dushmantha Chameera is the one who straightaway goes towards the umpire to check, and chooses the one which looks fresher - the one which was bowled from the first end. DRINKS BREAK. Good game of cricket going on. Neither side is giving an inch to the other. Sri Lanka are picking up wickets at regular intervals but Bangladesh are also trying hard to avoid a collapse. That middle order has been giving them issues ever since Mahmudullah and Rahim have been absent but they need to find answers soon. The scorecard is not too dissimilar to the previous ODI, with the exception that people are getting into double digits. But on a flat track, with only one batter crossing 30 in the top 6 is a worry. Of course, Tawhid Hridoy might be the second but in short, the batters are not converting their starts. The Lankans would be happy with this. One more wicket and they would be into the tail.

Bumble's law? Well, not applicable here, is it? As per David Lloyd, after 30 overs, if a team has wickets in hand, the score at that stage can be doubled. But given that Bangladesh are already 5 down, hard to see them get to 320 from here on. This is the last recognized batting pair and even to get to 250, they need a substantial partnership.

Still, he goes through it and gets a top edge that flies to deep fine leg, where Janith Liyanage takes it around his waist height, falling over to his left after taking it. Well, this is bizarre. That boundary scored by Shamim Hossain on 27.3, was his first in ODI cricket! He followed it up with another on the last ball, but curiously, in his 4 ODIs so far, prior to this, he had not hit a single four, albeit he had hit two biggies!

Googly, short in length, Tawhid backs away to the leg side and looks to punch but is cramped for room and mistimes it back to the bowler.

15.40

Tossed up, around off, Tawhid Hridoy defends.

A full toss, on middle, Parvez Hossain Emon leand and sweeps it through square leg for a single.

DRINKS BREAK. Well, the pitch might be more or less similar to the one featured in the first ODI, but definitely, the playing conditions are not the same. In the first match, Bangladesh got one of the two new balls to move around a lot till the 20th over at least, but there has barely been any movement here with either of the balls. Here and there, there was a one-odd case of the ball swinging but not much of concern to the batters. Additionally, spin has not yet had an effect. The wicket which fell was more due to lack of perfect execution by the batter. In short, this pitch does look like a terrific one to bat upon and the visitors will have to target somewhere in the region of 300 to be safe. Parvez Hossain Emon has got a start now and should be aiming for a three-digit score. It will be a challenge for the Lankans if the balls don't do much. Here comes spinner number 4 - Wanindu Hasaranga.

OUT! CAUGHT! Charith Asalanka strikes and this is big wicket for Sri Lanka. Najmul Hossain Shanto can't believe what he has done here. Dragged length and darting in around the middle stump, Shanto goes back, opens his stance, and tries to pull it over cow corner. He mistimes it as the ball has got too close to his body and hence, he doesn't get the desired elevation. It goes towards wide long on, where Maheesh Theekshana runs across to his left and pouches this catch while running. Shanto departs for 14 (19) and the budding 63-run stand has been broken. POWERPLAY 2 time. 4 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle, till the 40th over. After a slow start, Bangladesh will be happy with the eventual outcome of Powerplay 1. The first 4 overs yielded just 17 runs but the last 6 resulted in 48. Especially those last 3 overs - fetching 8, 11 and 10 runs respectively - seemed to suggest that the visitors are slowly getting adjusted to the conditions.

Huge appeal for LBW! Nothing from the umpire. Maheesh Theekshana is literally pleading with the umpire but to the naked eye, that seemed to be going past the off stump. The Lankans have a chat and keeper Kusal Mendis seems to be the most animated and eventually, convinces skipper Asalanka to take the review. It was a very full ball, around middle and off, and Parvez Hossain Emon got low to sweep the ball on a knee, but missed it and was hit on the pads. FOUR! Lovely ball, even better shot. Asitha targets the boots and tries to bring the ball swing into the left hander, almost around the yorker length. But gets it too full, around middle. However, Shanto is upto it and flicks it through mid-wicket for a classical boundary to get off the mark in style.

2.40

A short ball, outside leg, Najmul Hossain Shanto just about gets across and lets it pass. He expects a wide call but doesn't get it. The umpire explains that had he stayed where he was, the ball would have hit him and hence the call.

Najmul Hossain Shanto walks in next, at number 3, replacing Tanzid Hasan.

2.3W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! As always, more often than not, Asitha strikes first. It is the knuckle delivery, landing around middle and off on a length. Tanzid Hasan looks to cut it through the off side but the ball swings away from the left hander and also, arrives a lot slower than he anticipated. The shot is already through before the ball could come and all the batter manages is a thick outside edge behind. The keeper, Kusal Mendis, dives in front to pouch that catch and Sri Lanka have their first wicket. Tanzid, who looked the most fluent from Bangladesh's side in the first ODI, departs for just  7 (11) and Bangladesh are 10/1 after 2.3 overs!

Not much signs of swing in that opening over. In the first game, Taskin was getting the ball to move a lot in the air. Meanwhile, a note of congratulations for umpire RUCHIRA PALLIYAGURUGE.  He is standing in his 100th ODI as an onfield umpire, and becomes only the third Sri Lankan after Kumar Dharmasena and Asoka de Silva to achieve this feat. The players are out in the middle. Asitha Fernando has the first new ball in his hand. For Bangladesh, it is the same opening pair of Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan. Emon to face. One slip awaits. Let's play!

PITCH REPORT - Russell Arnold is doing the pitch report. Arnold observes that during the first ODI, the pace got quicker and had more bounce in the evening, during the second innings. That practically means that batting in the second innings is a lot easier. Believes that the pitch is more or less similar to the one used in the first ODI and once again, spin will play a pivotal role. Reckons that the team batting first needs to score around 270-280 to win.

The skipper of Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka, wanted to bat first as well. Agrees that the pitch looks a good one to bat upon. On the top order's failure in the previous game, Asalanka says that there was a chat with the players, but at the same time, there is massive trust on the batters. Informs that the team has made two tactical changes, with Dunith Wellalage and Dushmantha Chameera coming in for Milan Rathnayake and Eshan Malinga.

The skipper of Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, says that they’ll bat first, backing the surface, which looks good and quite similar to the one used in the last match. He admits the previous result was an upset, but the team had honest conversations about bouncing back stronger. Mentions that they’ve come in well-prepared, as they know the conditions well. States that they had a couple of days for training coming up in this clash. Informs that the side has made two changes, where Shamim comes in place of Litton and Hasan comes in for Taskin, who is rested to manage his workload.

Talking about the weather, it was in talk during the first ODI, with as many as three players suffering from cramps. Tanvir Islam was struggling post his 4th over itself while Mustafizur Rahman literally did not complete his full quota of overs, and just walked out of the field due to cramps. From the Lankan camp, Wanindu Hasaranga was struggling as well. So we hope that the weather is a bit kinder to the players today. For now, it is bright, sunny and hot again.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Nishan Madushka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka (C), Janith Liyanage, Dunith Wellalage (In for Milan Rathnayake), Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Asitha Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera (In for Eshan Malinga).

Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Parvez Hossain Emon, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain (In for Litton Das), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (C), Jaker Ali (WK), Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman and Hasan Mahmud (In for Taskin Ahmed).

TOSS - Bangladesh have won the toss and they have elected to BAT first.

Conditions in Colombo remain gloomy, and there are considerable chances of rain, but in patches for the full day. But fans will hope that the rain stays away, and they can get a full game. The pitch is expected to aid spin once again, but let’s see how it pans out with this weather. Stay tuned for the toss and more updates!

For Bangladesh, this match is all about handling pressure and executing better in key phases. Tanzid Hasan looked solid at the top, and Jaker Ali also fought hard down the order, but their middle-order collapse was alarming. They'll need a more measured approach against spin and better support for their bowlers. Former skipper Shanto has been dropped from the T20I squad, so he will come out to prove a point here. Also, they will play this match without their coach, Phil Simmons, who is unavailable due to personal reasons. With Taskin and Tanzim in form, Bangladesh certainly have the firepower to hit back, but it’ll require collective discipline.

Sri Lanka will be buzzing with confidence. Asalanka continues to lead by example, and their spinners, Hasaranga and Kamindu, have proven to be the real match-winners on a dry, gripping surface. After missing out on playing in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, this team is looking fierce as they want to prove their supremacy in the ODI format, as they have been a formidable side in the last two decades. Their batting depth and spin-heavy attack are perfectly suited to the Premadasa conditions. If they stay composed and start well again, Sri Lanka could easily close out the series here itself.

In the first ODI, Sri Lanka recovered from a shaky start after losing three wickets inside the Powerplay. Charith Asalanka anchored the innings beautifully, stitching vital partnerships with Kusal Mendis and Janith Liyanage. For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed and Tanzim Hasan Sakib were the pick of the bowlers. Chasing 245, Bangladesh were in control at 100 for 1 before Wanindu Hasaranga’s magical spell turned the tide. He took 4 wickets for just 10 runs in under eight overs, while Kamindu Mendis chipped in with a game-changing 3/19. The visitors collapsed dramatically from a position of strength, losing nine wickets for just 67 runs and ending at 167 all out.

Hello and welcome to the second ODI between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After a dominant win in the first game, the hosts have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Led by Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka will now be eyeing a series win. On the flip side, it’s a must-win situation for Mehidy Hasan Miraz and his men. They had their moments in the opener but couldn’t capitalize, and now find themselves under pressure.

... MATCH DAY ...

Sri Lanka are firmly in control as they head into the second ODI, riding high after a commanding 77-run win in Colombo. Captain Charith Asalanka starred with a composed century, while their spin twins Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis, alongside Maheesh Theekshana, dominated as the ball spun in the closing stages. Bangladesh, on the other hand, were left stunned after collapsing from a promising start losing seven wickets for just five runs - a collapse that highlighted their inconsistency and outdated middle-order. Sri Lanka will look to maintain their momentum with a balanced attack under home conditions. Pathum Nissanka who was the start in the Tests missed out in the first game and will want to make up while Kusal Mendis has been in good form but needs a big score. Bangladesh, embarking on a rebuilding journey without veterans like Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah, will turn to Mehidy Hasan Miraz, their new ODI captain, to instil belief. Their batting will hinge on the form of youngsters like Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tanzid Hasan, and Jaker Ali, all bursting with potential and the latter two showed that in the last game with fine knocks. Mehidy himself and Taskin Ahmed, fresh from a four-wicket haul, will lead the charge with the ball, but they will also need the experience of Mustafizur Rahman. The Tigers know they must find composure in key moments if they’re to force a series decider Expect Sri Lanka to continue using spin-friendly conditions to their advantage, while Bangladesh search for some middle-order stability and early breakthroughs. The series is young, the energy fresh and with pride and momentum on the line, this second ODI should be fiercely contested.
