Commentary

That brings us to the end of a compelling encounter here in Colombo. England's impressive 5-wicket victory has levelled the series at 1-1, ensuring a thrilling conclusion to this 3-match ODI series. There is now everything to play for in the decisive final ODI, which you can catch on 27th January 2026 at 9 am GMT. We will be here with all the pre-match build-up and updates an hour earlier. Until then, thank you for joining us, and cheers for now.

England captain Harry Brook expressed significant relief and satisfaction in securing an away victory, especially on what he described as a very difficult track he has ever played on. He highlighted the importance of adapting quickly to the challenging conditions by focusing on strike rotation and situation management rather than free scoring. Brook was full of praise for his bowling unit, calling their effort to dismiss the home side on a familiar surface outstanding, noting the effectiveness of using six spin options and constant rotation to build pressure. He also praised Will Jacks, who performed well in the middle order and with the ball, and reserved specific praise for Joe Root, labeling him an exceptional player whose ability to find gaps and manage the game was incredible. Overall, Brook viewed it as a great team win and hopes to build momentum from this result.

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka felt his side were short by at least 30 runs, identifying key dismissals, including the run-outs of Kusal Mendis and himself, as crucial turning points that hampered their total. He acknowledged the need for smarter play in pushing for runs but also cited the intense heat as a factor in conserving energy. Asalanka credited the English batters, particularly Joe Root, for his exceptional play through the middle overs, for nullifying all of Sri Lanka's bowling efforts. He did, however, express pride in his team's significant improvement in fielding over the past two years. Looking ahead to the series finale, Asalanka expressed excitement, emphasizing the need to execute the basics and the necessity for one of their batters to score a big hundred to secure the series.

Joe Root has been named Player Of The Match. Root expressed his affection for playing in Sri Lanka and voiced pleasure in securing a win on what he described as a very difficult surface. He candidly admitted the pitch was challenging for ODI cricket, highlighting the key to batting success as playing the ball as late as possible and maintaining a calm presence at the crease. Root praised the team's ability to adapt from their first game mistakes, executing a plan focused on maximizing the Powerplay, building significant partnerships, and ensuring batters remained in for long periods. He attributed their ability to build momentum and adjust to the conditions to experience gained from playing extensively in the subcontinent, emphasizing the need for precise footwork and early reading of the ball, and voiced his ultimate satisfaction with securing the victory.

Time for the presentation ceremony ...

Earlier, in a dominant bowling display, England bundled out Sri Lanka for 219 in 49.3 overs. The English bowlers, particularly the spinners and those utilizing clever changes of pace, successfully choked the Sri Lankan innings. A cautious start by Sri Lanka in the first Powerplay was quickly stifled by the introduction of spin, which led to the dismissals of Pathum Nissanka and a crucial run-out of Kusal Mendis. Despite a resilient 66-run fourth-wicket partnership between Dhananjaya de Silva and captain Charith Asalanka, England maintained control through the middle overs. The death overs saw wickets fall in clusters as Sri Lanka attempted a late push, ultimately falling well short of a potentially imposing total. Joe Root, Rehan Ahmed, and Jamie Overton were among the wicket-takers as England restricted their opponents to 219 all out.

Sri Lanka, once again, relied heavily on their spin battery, with captain Charith Asalanka deploying five spinners in a bid to replicate their first-match success. While Dhananjaya de Silva and Jeffrey Vandersay each picked up two wickets, and Asitha Fernando chipped in with one, the total was simply not enough. The English batters learned from their previous mistakes, building crucial partnerships, including a solid 34-run stand between Jos Buttler and Will Jacks to seal the win and nullifying the threat of the turning ball. In the end, England chased the target with ease, denying Sri Lanka the opportunity to clinch the series with a game to spare, and setting up a mouth-watering final ODI.

The anchor of this successful chase was undoubtedly Joe Root for his phenomenal application on a track that offered significant assistance to the spinners. Root took the sting out of the Sri Lankan attack with a perfectly measured innings. After the makeshift opener Rehan Ahmed fell early and a 68-run second-wicket stand with Ben Duckett steadied the ship, Root dropped anchor. He navigated the challenging middle overs with expert precision, rotating the strike effectively and punishing the rare loose delivery. His match-defining 81-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Harry Brook was the final nail in the coffin for the hosts. Root's departure on 75, just before the finish line, dragged his side to the verge of victory.

England have comprehensively defeated Sri Lanka by 5 wickets to level the ODI series at 1-1. The visitors exhibited a stark contrast in batting application compared to their first-match collapse, chasing down the target of 220 with remarkable composure. The victory was defined by patience on a challenging, spin-friendly surface.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! It's suddenly a bit cloudy in Columbo, but the players have entered the green turf. It's Ben Duckett and Rehan Ahmed to open the inning for England. Asitha Fernando to start with the new ball with a slip in place. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

With the target set at just 220, the momentum is certainly with England heading into the break. Sri Lanka will need early breakthroughs to defend this modest total, while England will look to chase this down comfortably. Stay tuned as the players return to the field for the second innings.

The English bowling attack was brilliant, keeping the pressure on throughout the mix. Interestingly, they utilized eight different bowlers to mix things up. Jamie Overton and Adil Rashid were the stars with the ball, picking up two wickets each to break key partnerships. Joe Root as well bowled extremely well in the death over and claimed two wickets as well. The rest of the attack supported well, with Liam Dawson, Will Jacks, and Rehan Ahmed all chipping in with a wicket apiece to restrict the scoring rate.

Sri Lanka have finished their innings with a below-par total of 219 runs! After losing Kamil Mishara early, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis tried to rebuild with a 42-run partnership, but a quick double-wicket blow left them reeling at 68/3. Dhananjaya de Silva (40) and Charith Asalanka (45) steadied the ship with a gritty 66-run stand, and Pavan Rathnayake played a handy cameo of 29 late in the innings. However, the lower order couldn't offer much resistance, leaving the team short of a competitive score.

49.3W

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Fuller, on off, Fernando clears his front foot and tries to slog it but gets the top edge. The ball balloons high toward the offside and Root runs to his left to take the catch. Sri Lanka are bundled out for 219.

Asitha Fernando is the last man in.

49.2W

OUT! TAKEN! Dunith Wellalage looks to just take on the bowler as it's the last over of the inning, but fails to get the better of it. This is tossed up by Root, fuller, on off. Dunith charges down the track and hits it from the bottom part of his bat. The ball flies toward the right of the long on region, Sam Curran jogs to his right and takes a good catch.

Drinks Break! Sri Lanka stands at a critical juncture, currently at 151/5, with their captain, Charith Asalanka, demonstrating impressive skill and composure at the crease. For Sri Lanka to post a formidable score, it’s essential for the lower-order batsmen to rally around him. On the flip side, England has been relentless, chipping away at wickets and maintaining the pressure.

Drinks Break! It has been a good tussle so far. Sri Lanka have lost their top three and arein a worrying situation with the score not even breaching 70. OUT! MENDIS IS RUN OUT! The mix-up between the batters leads to the wicket and the Lankans have lost their in-form batter. This is short and outside off, Mendis cuts it from his backfoot toward point. Will Jacks is the player in that region who moves to his right and makes a one-handed stop. He sees Mendis set off early to take the single and throws it at the keeper's end. Silva, on the other side of the pitch, sees Jacks stopping the ball and he rejects the call but Mendis is halfway through. He returns and offers a dive, but Buttler gloves the ball and whips the bails in a flash. The third umpire has a check on that Run Out and sees that Mendis's bat is much away from the popping crease.

We are all set for the play to begin. Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara have walked out in the middle to open for Sri Lanka. Jamie Overton will operate with the new ball for England.

England skipper Harry Brook mentioned that the team must adapt to the conditions as swiftly as possible, anticipating a similar playing surface to the first ODI. He emphasized the importance of strike rotation as frequently as possible. Brook expressed disappointment with the recent results, particularly the number of games lost away from home. Regarding team changes, he confirmed that Zak Crawley is injured, and that Will Jacks will replace him and slot into the middle order, while Rehan Ahmed will open the innings.

Sri Lanka captain, Charith Asalanka, confirmed his team's decision to bat first, noting that all three departments performed well in the previous match and expressing his desire for a strong start in this game as well. He highlighted the fielding as the most pleasing aspect of their last performance, praising Kusal Mendis' mature innings and Dunith Wellalage's effective final over with the bat as well. Asalanka stated they are fielding an unchanged side for the match and believes a score between 270-280 would be competitive. He also emphasized the usefulness of spin in the local conditions, expressing confidence in their home tracks and the consistent delivery of his spin bowlers.

England (Playing XI) - Rehan Ahmed, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Will Jacks (replaces Zak Crawley), Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis (WK), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka (C), Janith Liyanage, Pavan Rathnayake, Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, Jeffrey Vandersay, Asitha Fernando.

TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the toss and they have elected to BAT first.

With the series on the line, anticipation is high. England, with their backs firmly against the wall, will be desperate to bounce back and force a decider, while Sri Lanka will be eager to press their advantage and secure a valuable series victory on home soil. This match promises to be a thrilling battle of adaptability and nerve as both teams vie for supremacy in Colombo.

England, on the other hand, displayed excellent form with the ball, led by Adil Rashid's impressive bowling, effectively restricting Sri Lanka to a manageable total. Their top-order batting also showed promising signs, with Duckett and Root building a formidable foundation. The crucial lesson for England was to adapt to the spin-friendly conditions. To stay alive in the series, they need their middle order to show greater patience and technique against the turning ball, building partnerships rather than collapsing under pressure. Captain Harry Brook will expect his senior players to step up and ensure promising starts are not squandered, potentially by better rotation of the strike or a shift in approach on a challenging surface.

For the hosts, the key takeaway from the first match was the resilience of their middle order and the effectiveness of their spinners on a home surface. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with a brilliant unbeaten 93, while Janith Liyanage and Dunith Wellalage provided crucial support, pushing the total to a competitive 271. Their bowling attack, particularly the spin trio of Dunith Wellalage, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Charith Asalanka, successfully exploited the pitch conditions to dismantle the English batting line-up. Moving into the second ODI, Sri Lanka will look to replicate this cohesive performance, with their top order needing to convert starts into bigger scores and their bowlers aiming to maintain the pressure and seal a series win.

Welcome back, cricket fans, for what promises to be an enthralling 2nd ODI between Sri Lanka and England. After a tense series opener, the hosts, Sri Lanka, find themselves 1-0 up after securing a 19-run victory. That first match saw England's run chase collapse dramatically on a slowing pitch. Joe Root and Ben Duckett had put the visitors in a commanding position with a solid 117-run partnership for the second wicket. However, a middle-order implosion, as the English batters struggled against the turning ball, ultimately led to their downfall, leaving them 19 runs short of Sri Lanka's target.

... MATCHDAY ...

The pressure is squarely on England as they return to the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo for the second ODI of the three-match series. Trailing 1-0 after a spirited performance by the hosts in the opener, the tourists face a do-or-die situation. A loss here would hand Sri Lanka the series trophy with a game to spare, while a win for England would set up a thrilling decider next week. The first ODI was a game of missed opportunities for Harry Brook’s side. Chasing a target of 272, England looked to be cruising at 129-1 thanks to fluent half-centuries from Ben Duckett and Joe Root. However, the familiar spin web of Sri Lanka dismantled the middle order, sparking a collapse that saw England fall just 19 runs short. For the hosts, Kusal Mendis was the anchor with a brilliant unbeaten 93, while youngster Dunith Wellalage turned the game with his all-round heroics. Heading into this clash, England’s batters will need to find a way to rotate the strike better against the turning ball. The middle order, particularly captain Harry Brook and the lower-middle order, must avoid getting bogged down by the likes of Wellalage and Jeffrey Vandersay. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be brimming with confidence. Their strategy will likely remain the same, post a competitive total and let their spinners choke the run chase on a surface that traditionally slows down as the game progresses. Expect another tactical battle where patience will be just as important as power. England certainly has the firepower to bounce back, but Sri Lanka's home advantage and spin-heavy attack make them a formidable hurdle. If England can’t solve the spin puzzle, the series could be over before the weekend ends.
