Commentary

Right then, that's all from this entertaining game where South Africa emerged victorious and got the first points on the board. The action continues on Tuesday, June 4, when Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan take on World Cup debutants Uganda at the Guyana National Stadium. The action will commence at 6 am IST (12.30 am GMT), but our build-up will begin much sooner. See you then. Cheers!

Aiden Markram, the skipper of South Africa says he is happy with the win. Adds the batting was a bit up and down but the bowlers did a fantastic job in the first innings. Mentions that this track is a tough one from a batter's perspective and you have to take the learnings from it and try to adapt. Adds they have got two next games at the same venue and it is important to assess the conditions and try to come out on top. Appreciates Anrich Nortje and also says that the boys in the dugout are pumped up with this win.

The captain of Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga feels that it was the correct decision to bat first. Adds that the batters went in search of a target between 160-170 but feels it was a 120-130 wicket. Shares that bowling is their strength which is why they wanted to bat first and put a good score on the board. States that they have to improve as a batting unit and if they can put good totals on the board, they can perform well in the tournament.

Anrich Nortje is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his exceptional bowling figures. He begins by saying that it means a lot to get some momentum going. Says it has been a tough few days and they have been working really very hard. Adds he is feeling good it's just that he didn't get the desired results in the past few games but it was good in this game as things went the way he wanted. States it was a tough wicket and the boys did really well with the ball initially and he just compounded the pressure when brought into the attack. Says he finds it a bit tricky to find momentum on such drop-in wickets and adds it's just about keeping plans simple and adapting to the conditions going forward.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka opted to bat first, but could never really come to terms with the surface. South Africa got their wish to bowl first, and the Proteas pacers demonstrated why they wanted to make first use of the surface. Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Ottneil Baartman utilized the hardness of the new ball and extracted extra bounce from the pitch, posing tough questions to the opposition. Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje kept the pressure on, capitalizing on the platform laid by the pacers in the Powerplay. Angelo Mathews attempted to counter-attack his way out of trouble but couldn't hang around for long. Nortje and Rabada combined to do the cleanup job and bowled Sri Lanka out for 77, the lowest score for the Asian side in their T20I history. Anrich Nortje had a field day, finishing with his best-ever T20I figures of 4 for 7 from 4 overs. Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj each picked up two wickets, while Ottneil Baartman claimed one in his maiden World Cup game.

As for Sri Lanka, they will reflect on how a bit more application with the bat could have resulted in a different outcome for them. Despite facing adversity after a dismal batting performance, their bowlers stepped up and put up a commendable fight. Angelo Mathews, Nuwan Thushara, and Dasun Shanaka operated well as a unit, keeping things tight against the South African top order. They maintained pressure and prevented the opposition from racing towards the target. Sri Lanka's start could have been even better had Kusal Mendis held onto the catch of Tristan Stubbs when he was on 0. Matheesha Pathirana tested the batters with his raw pace before Wanindu Hasaranga made an impact with wickets off successive overs. However, South Africa never truly felt the pressure of the scoreboard and batted sensibly to secure the win.

South Africa tame the Lankan Lions to kick off their campaign! While the chase got deeper than what the Proteas would have preferred, they ultimately got the job done and opened their account in the competition. With only 78 runs to get, it seemed to be a matter of when rather than if for South Africa, but the chase did not pan out to be as easy as it seemed at the halfway mark. It was a shaky start for South Africa as Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram departed cheaply. Given the modest target, they had the luxury of taking their time and seeing off the new ball. It was in no way the most convincing stays at the crease for Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs but they did well to hang around and weathered the storm against the new ball. Just as the singles began to flow freely off the bat of both batters, de Kock and Stubbs perished and could not see their side through. Heinrich Klaasen then got together with David Miller and a couple of hits from the former helped them ease off the pressure and took them over the line. With this win, the Proteas extend their dominance against Sri Lanka in Men's ICC events, marking their 7th successive win since their defeat in the 2014 T20 World Cup.

An appeal for LBW but the umpire is unmoved. Wanindu Hasaranga straightaway challenges the on-field decision and sends it upstairs. Maheesh Theekshana bowls a carrom ball on a flatter trajectory, quicker as well, on a length and keeps way low on the bounce on the leg stump line, David Miller is back into the crease and looks to tuck it away, but gets a ping on the front pad. The UltraEdge comes up and shows that no bat is involved. Ball Tracking confirms that the ball is pitching outside leg.

Commentary

We are back for South Africa's reply! The two South African openers Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock stride out to the crease with the veteran southpaw taking the guard. Angelo Mathews will get the proceedings underway with the new ball for Sri Lanka. And, here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, South Africa have clinically restricted their opponents to the lowest of the scores, reaping all the benefits from the surface and executing their plans to perfection. They have the target well within reach and would aim to chase it down as quickly as possible and inflate their NRR to a huge extent. While Sri Lanka, after their dismal performance with the bat, would look to come stronger with the ball, but they are way behind the eight ball in all fairness. Stay tuned as the chase is next up in a few minutes.

Ottneil Baartman is for a chat. When asked how was it to get a wicket with the first ball in World Cup cricket, he replies that he could not have asked for a better start. Says that the pacers who bowled before him, allowed him to settle in. Lauds Anrich Nortje for the way he bowled. Adds that the way Aiden Markram marshalled the troops was exceptional. Tells that seeing off the new ball and partnerships will be the key during their chase. States that it is a dream come true for him to play in the World Cup.

South Africa, on the other hand, started strong with Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen challenging the batters from the get-go, exploiting the pitch's variable bounce with their relentless lines and lengths. Ottneil Baartman joined in, dismissing Nissanka with his first ball, and exerted more pressure on the rivals. Keshav Maharaj tightened the screws by squeezing the runs further after the fielding restrictions eased, taking two wickets in his second over. Anrich Nortje then went full throttle with his vicious pace, bagging four wickets for just seven runs in his quota of four overs. Kagiso Rabada too, picked up a couple in his second spell towards the backend. The Proteas dominated through and through, making Sri Lanka struggle for every run. Ottneil Baartman, Kagiso Rabada, and Marco Jansen then wrapped up things neatly in the death overs, and clinically restricted Sri Lanka well below three figures.

A clinical performance from South Africa with the ball as they bundle up Sri Lanka on a paltry 77. This is Sri Lanka's lowest total in all T20s and the best bowling performance by the Proteas. Not a single Sri Lankan batter could cross the 20-run mark with Kusal Mendis being the highest run-scorer with 19. Sri Lanka opted to bat first but had a tough start with the openers struggling due to the variable bounce and movement. Pathum Nissanka tried to pick up the pace after a slow start but got out. They couldn't make the most of the fielding restrictions and crawled through the first six. Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis faced tough conditions and found it hard to hit boundaries, with Kamindu eventually getting out while trying to accelerate. Wanindu Hasaranga promoted himself up the order but didn't last long, and Sadeera Samarawickrama perished on the first ball he faced. Angelo Mathews and Dasun Shanaka attempted to go on the offensive with a couple of biggies but couldn't keep it up, and after their fall, they never really recovered. Sri Lanka stayed on the back foot throughout and finished with their lowest total ever.

19.11W

OUT! RUN OUT! A suicidal second run and Sri Lanka have been bowled out for just 77, their lowest score in T20I cricket. Marco Jansen steams in from over the wicket and hurls it on the back of a length, over middle, Maheesh Theekshana backs away and slaps it back over the bowler's head. It is not hit off the middle of the bat and it goes only as far as the ring down the ground. Maheesh Theekshana wants to stay on strike and calls Nuwan Thushara for the second run. Thushara is in no position to complete the second run and Anrich Nortje gives it a chase and fires a throw in on the bounce at the bowling end. Marco Jansen is quick to walk up to the stumps and does the rest, catching Thushara way short of his crease.

Marco Jansen (3-0-14-0) to bowl the last over.

We are done with the national anthems, and it is now time to get going in the 'Big Apple'. The sun is shining in its full glory as the two umpires make their way out to the middle. Aiden Markram leads his troops out to the centre. Out walk the two Sri Lankan openers, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. Marco Jansen will start with the new ball for the Proteas. Away we go...

We are moments away from the first ball, but before that, Aiden Markram and Wanindu Hasaranga will lead their respective sides out for the national anthems. It will be South Africa's first, followed by the national anthem of Sri Lanka.

Aiden Markram, the skipper of South Africa says that they would have actually bowled first and says he's not too sure how it is going to play but adds the history of the wicket has a bit of Adelaide in it. States that the team is playing good cricket and they did well in the ODI World Cup. He's hopeful to get going in this T20 World Cup. Further adds that the facilities are really nice and is excited to play at this venue. Ends up by saying they are going with four quicks and one spinner including Keshav Maharaj.

The skipper of Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga says that they will bat first. Mentions that the wicket looks good and that they want to get a good score on the board. Further adds that they believe in their strong bowling unit and want to back them. Shares that the preparation has been good and the team is ready to go. Informs that they are going with 7 batters and 4 bowlers, including 2 all-rounders.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (C), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Ottneil Baartman.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Kamindu Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga (C), Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara.

TOSS UPDATE - The coin-flip lands in the favour of Sri Lanka and Wanindu Hasaranga elects to BAT first.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka also field a strong squad with a blend of youth and experience. However, their recent humbling by the Netherlands in the warm-up fixture suggests areas for improvement. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis solidify the top order, while the likes of Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka add depth in the batting order. Veterans Angelo Mathews and Dasun Shanaka add more stability. Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga leads the spin department, with Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana who will hold key roles on slower tracks. Pacer Dilshan Madushanka, along with speedsters Matheesha Pathirana and Dushmantha Chameera, strengthens the pace attack. Both teams possess a fair share of all-rounders which make the contest even more interesting. Stay tuned as the toss and the teams are up next in a few moments.

The Proteas enter this competition after a series defeat against the West Indies and on the back of five defeats on the trot, but they are now reinforced with key experienced players that make them dangerous enough. The South African squad boasts enough raw power-hitting prowess to send shivers down the spine of any bowling attack. Importantly, Quinton de Kock has regained his form and is scoring runs again, while Reeza Hendricks, skipper Aiden Markram, and David Miller strengthen the middle order. Heinrich Klaasen, known for his ability to hit sixes at will, and Tristan Stubbs, who had a phenomenal Indian T20 League season, add the requisite firepower down the order. The Proteas also have solid options in both spin and pace departments, with Kagiso Rabada spearheading the bowling arsenal including Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi as the spin duo, making them tough contenders.

Hello and a very warm welcome to another thrilling coverage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Match number 4 of the league phase promises an exciting clash between the two heavyweights of Pool D. It’s South Africa taking on Sri Lanka. The two sides are all set to kick off their campaign at the scenic Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The Proteas are on the mission to win their maiden title whereas Sri Lanka are all pumped up for redemption.

... MATCH DAY ...

Two heavyweights are set to start their T20 World Cup campaign as South Africa takes on Sri Lanka at the picturesque Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. This neutral venue poses a unique challenge for both teams. South Africa has the upper hand historically with a 12-5 record against Lanka. Despite losing a recent T20I series to the West Indies, the Proteas found many positives. Quinton de Kock regained his form and will be a key threat at the top alongside Reeza Hendricks. Although Aiden Markram has been out of form, he can anchor the innings effectively. They boast one of the deadliest hitters in Heinrich Klaasen, complemented by Tristan Stubbs, who excelled in the Indian T20 League, and David Miller, adding further firepower to their batting lineup. Their pace attack is formidable with Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee as speedsters, strengthened by Kagiso Rabada’s versatile variations. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi are reliable frontline spinners who will enjoy these conditions. The team also has a strong bench to call upon if needed. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has secured six victories in their last nine matches in 2024, though they have faced unexpected losses at home to Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and an away defeat to Bangladesh. These setbacks highlight the need for immediate improvement, especially in batting, as seen in their warm-up game against the Netherlands where they failed to chase 180-plus. The middle order, featuring Sadeera Samarawickrama, Angelo Mathews, and Charith Asalanka, will bear the responsibility of stabilizing the innings. The opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis will also play a crucial role. Captain Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana form a proven spin duo that can control the middle overs. The pace attack, including Dilshan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera, and the promising Matheesha Pathirana, looks ready to make an impact.
