Commentary

Right then, the hosts, the West Indies have convincingly taken the lead by 1-0 in this three-match series. They were in command with the bat whereas the Proteas would like to go back to the drawing board and assess where things went wrong. However, the action in this 3-match T20I series on the Caribbean shores is far from over. The Brian Lara Cricket Academy of Tarouba will remain the exclusive venue for the remaining two T20Is as well. The second match will be played on Sunday, August 25th and the first ball will be bowled at 1900 GMT. But as you all know, our pre-match build-up starts way earlier. Do join us for that as well. Till then, take care, and cheers!

The captain of West Indies, Rovman Powell says that it is always good to take the lead in the series. Feels that some of the guys were rusty, which is unacceptable in a three-match series. Adds that they as a bowling and fielding group, should do better. Tells that the 2026 World Cup is too far away for them to think about. Further says that it is about taking one game at a time and having a look at different players.

Aiden Markram the skipper of South Africa is up for a chat. He says the ball was coming nicely when they batted and feels they fell around 10-15 runs short. Says the West Indian bowlers bowled really well. Adds the wicket was a bit tacky and got better to bat on as the game progressed. Appreciates Stubbs and Kruger for getting them to a good score. On being asked about Kwena Maphaka, he says that he has an X-Factor in him and is hungry to compete and feels that these are positive signs for the team.

Nicholas Pooran is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his explosive knock. He starts by thanking the Almighty. States that the openers did well to put the pressure on South Africa. Adds that his job was simpler and it was about keeping the momentum going. Shares that the wicket got better halfway through the South African innings but it was tricky at the start.

... THE PRESENTATION CEREMONY ...

Earlier in the game, a rain delay lasting about an hour created favorable conditions for the bowlers. The added moisture caused the ball to swing and seam, making the West Indies' decision to bowl first after winning the toss a crucial advantage. Batters struggled to time their shots as the ball gripped the damp wicket. Matthew Forde and Shamar Joseph capitalized on these conditions, swiftly dismantling South Africa's top and middle order. As the pitch slowed, the West Indies adapted their strategy, introducing three spinners to further stifle the scoring rate. However, just as the innings seemed to be faltering, an explosive 71-run partnership between Stubbs and Kruger, injected new life into the South African effort. Stubbs, who initially played a supporting role, accelerated his scoring in the latter part of his innings, providing the Proteas with much-needed momentum helping them to notch up 71 off the last 30.

South Africa, buoyed by their late batting surge, hoped to carry that momentum into their bowling performance. Resting out big names in both departments, South Africa strode without their key bowlers and had the challenging task of defending a good total. However, they faced an uphill battle as conditions shifted in favor of the batting side. The settling dew under the lights made the ball harder to grip, negating the assistance bowlers had enjoyed earlier. Additionally, the Proteas' fielding efforts were subpar, compounding their difficulties and the momentum further tilted against them. It never looked like the Proteas bowlers were in control and lacked efficiency through and through, leaking runs right, left, and center. Ottneil Baartman and Kwena Maphaka were the only successful bowlers for them, but they lacked support from the others.

The solid start of 84 runs from the openers gave the next guys a chance to find their feet without too much fuss. When Pooran joined Hope at the crease, they kept things ticking along nicely through the middle overs, never letting the run rate stagnate. Pooran then decided it was time to put the foot down, unleashing some serious fireworks. His blistering knock of 65 included 7 mammoth sixes and 2 fours at a monstrous strike rate of 250. Hope, meanwhile, played the perfect foil, holding down one end while keeping the scoreboard moving. Both men notched up their fifties, sending the Proteas on the ropes.

The West Indies win the series opener in a commanding fashion with 7 wickets in hand along with 13 balls to spare! A job well done by the hosts as they looked pretty relaxed with the bat throughout. On the other hand, South Africa would be really disappointed especially after the way they finished off with the bat towards the backend. Given the historical challenges of chasing at this venue and the average first innings score of 141, the West Indies needed a strong start with the bat and that's precisely what they delivered. Shai Hope and Alick Athanaze came out firing on all cylinders, launching an aggressive assault on the South African bowling attack from the very beginning. They capitalized on the Powerplay overs, amassing 75 runs and being unblemished.

FOUR! THAT'S IT! Roston Chase with the winning runs! Kwena Maphaka errs in line as this is too straight, on a back of a length, at the hips, Roston Chase gets inside the line and just tickles it fine. The ball beats the diving keeper, Ryan Rickelton to his left and it races away to the fence. West Indies win by 7 wickets and go 1-0 up in the series!

Roston Chase is the new man in for West Indies at number 5.

17.4W

OUT! TAKEN! Kwena Maphaka roars in delight as he gets his maiden international wicket! Took a bit of tapping in the first over but has since fought back well. Maphaka delivers a full delivery with an upright seam, on off. Rovman Powell tries to force this one through the off side. Fails to get the elevation to clear the man there and hits it straight into the hands of Patrick Kruger at cover who takes a sharp catch.

17.30

Honing in at the stumps, Rovman Powell shows the full face of the bat and pushes this full delivery back to the bowler.

Commentary

Welcome back for the Windies' reply. Aiden Markram and his men are in a huddle before they disperse and take their respective positions on the field. Shai Hope and Alick Athanaze will open the innings for West Indies. Nandre Burger will start with the new ball for South Africa. A slip in place. Away we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, all the momentum lies with South Africa at the halfway mark, a remarkable turnaround considering they were staring down the barrel midway through their innings. Shot-making has been challenging on this surface, with the ball sticking in the pitch, leading to several dismissals for the Proteas. West Indies will need a steady Powerplay to set a solid foundation for the chase. Back in a bit for the second essay.

Matthew Forde is up for a flash interview. He says everyone has their role defined and his role is to pick wickets inside the field restrictions. Adds he is pleased to execute in this game. Says the opposition does its homework and you have to evolve to remain one step ahead. Believes that two 50-plus run stands will get them to the target and backs his batters to get these runs.

After Kruger fell, Stubbs took matters into his own hands and went into overdrive. He unleashed a real assault and his 42-ball 76 ensured that South Africa finished with a total that looked unlikely at one stage. West Indies will be disappointed with how it all panned out in the second half of their bowling effort. They had South Africa on the ropes but as first Kruger and then Stubbs began to cut loose, the wheels came off for West Indies, resulting in some ordinary bowling and fielding.

Excellent fightback with the bat from South Africa! How's this for a recovery? From 55/5 at the end of 11 overs, the next 9 overs saw the Proteas score 119/2 to finish with 174 on the board. After being inserted into bat, South Africa were rocked early, losing their top three inside the first five overs. Matthew Forde exploited the moisture from the pre-game rain to his advantage and set the tone for the West Indies. Shamar Joseph and Gudakesh Motie soon got into the act to pile the misery on the visitors. With his side reeling at 42/5, Patrick Kruger decided to take the initiative, and his aggressive approach began to pay off. While Kruger led the charge, Tristan Stubbs was happy to play the second fiddle.

OUT! TAKEN! Romario Shepherd finally gets one, but this has been an exceptional inning from Stubbs. Shepherd takes all the pace off the leather, runs in from around the stumps, slows it up full and on the leg stump line, Tristan Stubbs looks to take on and tries to take the aerial route once again, but gets undone by the lack of pace and goes through the swing pretty early. Gets no real timing on it and airs it straight into the safe hands of Rovman Powell who grabs it nicely at long on. He departs on 76 off just 42.

19.46

SIX! THAT IS OUTTA HERE! That is some muscle power from Stubbs! A friendly full toss from Shepherd, around the wickets and on the knee length, Tristan Stubbs waits for it to arrive and deposits it behind deep mid-wicket for a huge six.

19.24

FOUR! That's neat from Stubbs! Romario Shepherd searches for the yorker but offers a juicy full toss outside off, Tristan Stubbs hammers it down the ground for a boundary. The ball deflects off the bowler's hand and still has enough wheels to run into the fence for a boundary.

19.12

Too full and wide of off, Bjorn Fortuin guides it to deep covers and Tristan Stubbs refuses to take the single as he wants the strike in the next over. An expensive penultimate over from Shamar Joseph. 24 runs off it, the most expensive over of the inning.

NO BALL AND FOUR! Shamar Joseph is under the pump in this penultimate over. The Free Hit sustains!

Done with all the pre-match formalities and it is time to get the action underway. The crowd has started to fill in the stands as the weather has cleared up now. The umpires are punctual and out to the middle. The West Indian players are seen in a circle, discussing last-minute strategies before spreading out to their fielding positions. Reeza Hendricks and Ryan Rickelton are the two openers for the Proteas. A typical left-hand right-hand combination. And as usual, spin to start with. Akeal Hosein will kickoff the proceedings with the new ball for the West Indies. And, here we go...

Well then, folks! We are just a few minutes away from the action to commence in this first T20I. But before that, the two sets of players are lined up for their respective national anthems. The national anthem of Trinidad and Tobago will be played first. It will be followed by the South African national anthem. And lastly, it will be the cricket anthem of the West Indies - 'Rally 'Round the West Indies'.

You may be wondering about the conditions now that the rain has passed. Nikhil Uttamchandani is out in the middle with the answers. He reports that it's very pleasant on the ground, and the skies are clear in the direction from where the rain came. The ground staff are not too concerned about the weather at this point. He also notes that the outfield has dried up excellently, thanks to the venue's efficient drainage system.

PITCH REPORT - Darren Ganga and Stacy Ann-King were inspecting the deck before the rain arrived at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. King begins by saying that there is some grass and the bowlers might extract some pace and bounce due to atmospheric moisture. Ganga joins her and says the average score is 141 while batting first but he reckons there could be more.

UPDATE - 7.36 pm GMT - Well, there's another update! The start of the match has been officially slated at 8 pm GMT now. No overs have been lost. But, if there's any further delay, we might see the overs getting slashed. Let's hope for the best. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE - 7.33 pm GMT - We should have started by now as per the official word, but there's another slight delay in the start of the game as the groundsmen are working hard to get the field ready to get the play underway as soon as possible. Stick around for further updates.

UPDATE - 7.13 pm GMT - Some positive news coming our way! It has stopped raining and the covers are coming off. If there's no further rain, the game is set to commence at 7.30 pm GMT. No overs will be lost, as we had a 60-minute buffer before overs would start being reduced.

UPDATE - 6.52 pm GMT - According to Natalie Germanos on air, the rain has reduced in intensity, and it has brightened up a bit. We are in for a delayed start, but the radar suggests the rain should move along soon. Stick around for more news.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Reeza Hendricks, Ryan Rickelton (WK), Aiden Markram (C), Tristan Stubbs, Rassie van der Dussen, Donovan Ferreira, Patrick Kruger, Bjorn Fortuin, Ottneil Baartman, Nandre Burger, Kwena Maphaka (On T20I debut).

UPDATE - 6.39 pm GMT - Just as Nikhil Uttamchandani was interviewing the two captains at the toss, a drizzle quickly escalated into a downpour, cutting Aiden Markram's interview short. The rain is now pouring heavily, and puddles have already started to form in the outfield. However, we still have 60 minutes of extra time before overs begin to be lost. Team news coming your way shortly...

The captain of South Africa, Aiden Markram says that they would have bowled first as well with the rain around. Adds that it is an advantage while chasing under DLS method. Hopes that this is just a passing shower.

Rovman Powell, the captain of West Indies says it looks like a pretty good surface and with some rain around, it is good to bowl first. On being asked about the T20 World Cup campaign, he says it was a disappointing one as they had the team to go through. Informs they are going with 6 regular batters, two spinners and two quicks.

TOSS - West Indies have won the toss and they have opted to BOWL first.

On the South African side, a strategic decision has been made to rest several of their regular T20 players, focussing instead on building squad depth. The squad announcement was highlighted by the inclusion of young pace prodigy Kwena Maphaka, who has been turning heads since being named 'Player of the Tournament' at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year. This series will be his first taste of international cricket, and it will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure. The stage is set for what promises to be an entertaining series. Which team are you backing to take the lead? Stick around for the toss and team news.

The West Indies come into this series with a solid core, retaining 11 of the 15 players from their T20 World Cup squad. After the disappointment of missing out on the semifinals on home soil, Rovman Powell and Co. will be eager to set things right and they have the experience to get the job done. All eyes will be on Nicholas Pooran, who has been in exceptional form this year, and his performance will be key to the hosts' success in the series.

Nearly two months after their thrilling Super 8 clash at the T20 World Cup, South Africa and the West Indies are set to reignite their rivalry. Though the stakes may not be as high this time around, the anticipation is palpable as these two formidable teams lock horns again. Hello and welcome to the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad, for the first of three T20Is. While South Africa secured the Test series, the T20 format presents a new challenge for both sides.

... MATCH DAY ...

It has been a year of celebration in the Caribbean with the Men's T20 World Cup taking place a couple of months ago and the Caribbean Premier League on the horizon. But in between that, we are lucky to be witnessing some fantastic bilateral series action with the Proteas coming to the shores. West Indies and South Africa have already played a two-match Test series that the visitors won by 1-0 and now it is time for some action-packed and fast-paced T20 action to begin. It is a three-match series with all games set to be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago. Given how both teams are set up, there are going to be a fair bit of changes in personnel from the Test series. West Indies will be led by their power-packed middle-order batter Rovman Powell and they have some serious muscle power given a few of the names on the side but one name, in particular, stands out and that is of Nicholas Pooran who has enjoyed a fruitful last 12 months or so and with the pressure of captaincy off his shoulders, Pooran looks to be back at his best. Obed McCoy and Shamar Joseph will be their frontline seamers with plenty of options on the spin front and the likes of Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford will be looking to go ballistic in that middle order as well. Moving on to South Africa, they have more of an inexperienced side in terms of international prowess and skipper Aiden Markram will hold the key with the bat for them. With Quinton de Kock now retired and Heinrich Klaasen not in the side for this series, the likes of Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs will look to shine as both have had pretty successful seasons in terms of franchise cricket and Stubbs has all of a sudden become member of the Proteas set up in the last year or so. Ottneil Baartman, Lungi Ngidi, Lizaad Williams and Wiaan Mulder have all been a part of the international scene for a while now and will constitute the pace-attack in addition to young pace sensation Kwena Maphaka who took the world by storm in the last Under-19 World Cup. Both sides are filled with talent and potential but the Windies do have the experience especially in their batting lineup and the young guns of South Africa will really need to step up and make everyone feel that they belong on the biggest stage. Who are you backing for the win?
