Australia beat England by 72 runs

Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney

Right then, that is all we have from the second ODI of this three-match ODI series. Australia have taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 and would be looking to whitewash England at MCG. That game will be played on Tuesday, 22nd of November and will start at 8.50 am IST (3.20 am GMT). As you know, our coverage will start well in advance. So do join us for the same. Till then, it’s goodbye and cheers!

Josh Hazlewood, the skipper of Australia says that he is lucky with the players around him. Adds that they bowled really well and the batters did a pretty good job too. Mentions that it was nice feeling out there and he expects to play the next game even if Cummins comes back in. Ends by saying that it was a classy knock from Steven Smith.

Moeen Ali, the skipper of England says that they were in a good position with the bat but they lost wickets in quick succession and credits Australia for the way they played. Tells that they bowled well to pull things back in the first innings and the wicket got good to bat on later but they lost wickets and pressure got to them. Mentions that if one loses wickets regularly then it is very difficult to win. Hopes to win the final match at MCG and end the series on a positive note.

Mitchell Starc is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his four wickets! Mitchell Starc says that it is a nice to get the series win and they are looking forward to continue their form at the MCG as well. Adds that Smith was amazing with the bat and their batters gave them the platform to perform. Mentions that Zampa was excellent and he is the player they normally go to when under pressure. Ends by saying that he is happy with his performance and hopes that they can continue the momentum forward.

Time for the Presentation.

Earlier in the game, Australia managed to put together a healthy score on the board courtesy of fifties by Steven Smith, Mitchell Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne and that total proved too much for the English team as the wicket had good turn and enough help for seamers to keep everyone interested. England bowlers were good at the death and Rashid was also brilliant with the ball. However, their batting line-up failed to adjust to the conditions and the wicket and that means that Australia are going into MCG with series already in their bag.

England, well, they have only themselves to blame here. The aggressive approach that has brought them so much success over the years have led to their downfall in this chase. They lost two wickets in the first over but Salt decided to not back away from playing his shots. However, that approach backfired and he lost his wicket in the 6th over. Vince and Billings then stood up and took England to a position where they were in with a great chance to win this one. However, both of them departed after scoring fifties and England started to lose their way quite quickly as wickets kept tumbling and they eventually were bowled out for just 208.

Australia started off with a bang with the ball as Starc got two wickets in the very first over. The stand-in skipper Josh Hazlewood then provided another breakthrough to restrict England to 34 for 3. However, they were put under the pump by the 122-run fourth wicket partnership between Billings and Vince. The match was slightly in favour of England at that time but Josh Hazlewood came up with a moment of brilliance and dismissed Vince to trigger a collapse. Zampa joined the act and picked three wickets in no time to shatter all the momentum that England had gained. Starc then did what he does best and knocked over some of the lower-order batters as he finished with four wickets while Zampa also took four wickets to cap off a dominating win.

Australia have wrapped up the series with a comfortable victory here at SCG. However, it was not one-way traffic by any stretch of the imagination and at one time, England were looking all set to chase the total down. Australian bowlers though showed some great character under pressure and that would be the most pleasing aspect of this win.

We are back for the chase! The players are out in the middle. Jason Roy and Philip Salt are the two openers for England. Mitchell Starc to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Australia have put on a good total on the board with some good knocks from Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh. England, on the other hand also have a long batting line-up and they will be tested to chase this down. They need to show their quality if they want to level the series, but it is not going to be easy. Stay tuned for the chase.

England bowled well in patches, but they let the Aussies build two big partnerships that could cost them in the end. Moeen Ali got the big wicket of Warner at the start, and Chris Woakes removed Head soon after. However, then they lost their way for a bit. Finally, Adil Rashid got them back into the game with two wickets in two balls, and he also sent Smith back to the hut in the death overs. England actually pulled things back nicely at the tail end with a flurry of dot balls and a couple of wickets, which made a difference of at least 20–25 runs. David Willey and Woakes ended up with a couple of wickets each. Now, it is up to their batters to chase this down and stay in the series.

Australia started off well, with David Warner and Travis Head playing some few lusty blows at the start of the innings. However, they were soon sent to the dug out in quick succession. After that, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne started to take control of things and put England on the back foot. Both of them added 101 runs together, but Marnus Labuschagne got out after getting to his fifty. Smith continued his fine form with Mitchell Marsh playing the supporting role, and another 90-run partnership meant that Australia were on top. Unfortunately, Smith missed out on his century by six runs, and Australia could not finish off that well as they lost too many wickets at the end. Marsh did get to his half-century but could not stay till the end. This is not an easy pitch to bat on, and with the bowling attack of Australia, they will feel confident defending this score and would be hoping to seal the series here in SCG.

A good comeback from England in the death overs, and they have restricted Australia to 280. However, looking at the conditions, it is a decent score, and with the series on line, England will be under more pressure. It is going to be an exciting chase.

Drinks break. England have done well to get two wickets in quick succession in these middle overs.  Aussies were going along pretty nicely with that third wicket wicket partnership but Rashid has brought back England in this game. Australia still have plenty of firepower in their line-up and would be looking to up the ante a bit from hereon. However, a wicket or two quickly here can put more pressue on the Aussies and England would be hoping for a good show in this final passage of the first half. We are all set to begin! England players are out on the field and so are the Australian openers, David Warner and Travis Head. Clear skies and we should have an high-scoring encounter here. Chris Woakes to start with the ball for England. Here we go...

So, both the captains have decided to take some rest and we have Moeen Ali and Josh Hazlewood taking over the captaincy role. The other senior players for England are back though and it would be an interesting contest.

England (Playing XI) - Philip Salt, Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, James Vince, Sam Billings (WK), Moeen Ali (C) (In for Jos Buttler), Chris Woakes (In for Chris Jordan), Sam Curran (In for Luke Wood), Liam Dawson, David Willey, Adil Rashid (In for Olly Stone).

Australia (Playing XI) - David Warner, Travis Head, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey (WK), Mitchell Marsh (In for Cameron Green), Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood (C) (In for Pat Cummins).

TOSS - Australia have won the toss and they have ELECTED TO BAT FIRST.

England were a bit rusty and with some senior players resting, they could not match up to the intensity of the Aussies. Dawid Malan though was brilliant and managed to take them to a healthy total with his fantastic century. Their bowlers too looked short of answers against some quality Australian batters and it is an area they need to work on ahead of the ODI World Cup next year. However, England have all the quality to make a strong comeback and we might see a more closer and an intense encounter here. Will England level the series? Or will Australia manage to take an unassailable lead of 2-0? Let’s find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

This series is also the start of a new era in ODI cricket for Australia as Pat Cummins has taken over the leadership role. Cummins himself has not been at his best lately but showed some good signs in the opening game. The bowling group as a whole was quite impressive but they would like to be more clinical as they gave away way too many runs after putting England under the pump early in the match. On the batting front, the top 3 batters got fifties and the fluency that Steven Smith showed would be particularly pleasing for the management and Australian fans. Expect Australia to come up with another strong performance in this game.

Hello and a very warm welcome to the second ODI of this three-match ODI series between Australia and England. This series marks the start of the countdown for the next year’s ODI World Cup in India but the timing of the series which is being played just a few days after the T20 World Cup final has left many people baffled. Nevertheless, the home team, Australia have started on the right foot and would be looking to seal the series here in SCG.

... MATCH DAY ...

The caravan moves to Sydney for the second ODI of the 3-match ODI series between Australia and England. Having emerged victorious at Adelaide in the first ODI, the hosts hold a 1-0 lead heading into the second ODI. Australia will be hoping to take an unassailable 2-0 lead with a win in Sydney, whereas England will look to bounce back with a win in the second ODI and take the series to a decider in Melbourne. Opting to bowl first in the first ODI, Pat Cummins along with his new ball compatriot Mitchell Starc put England in some early trouble. Dawid Malan helped England recover and reach a challenging total with a solid century. English new-ball bowlers failed to replicate their counterparts while defending the total. With contributions from David Warner, Travis Head and Steven Smith, Australia cruised to the total to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The English captain, Jos Buttler, hinted in the post-match interview that they are open to making changes throughout the series. England looked handicapped without a proper sixth bowling option in the first game. Having rested Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran in the first ODI, the visitors will look to bolster the bowling attack by bringing in some of those rested players. With Sydney traditionally being a batting-friendly wicket, it will be interesting to see who England bring in for the second ODI. On the other hand, Australia looked settled in the first ODI and will look to stick with the same team. Will Australia seal the series in Sydney, or will England, the recently crowned Men's T20 World Cup champions, force a series decider? We shall find out together.
