... DAY 4, SESSION 3 ...

Another thing to note here is the widening of the cracks. That's one thing in Perth - be it the WACA or the Optus. Toss becomes massively crucial. Things could have been totally different had Pakistan batted first here, got above 300 and then tested the Aussies out in the second and fourth innings. Of course, that takes nothing away from the way Oz batted. But once you lose the toss here, you need to restrict the opposition under 300 in the first innings to try and maintain parity. Batting traditionally gets more and more difficult as the days go by on this pitch. So, from that aspect, the mental fortitude comes into play. The Pakistan batters would be mindful regarding the cracks and about how that one ball would have their number on it.

Interesting how certain observations pan out. There was this incident which occurred on 14.1. Babar Azam had punched the ball through the covers and there was an easy single available. But the former captain denied it. Result - it allowed Cummins to maintain that hanky. Small things in cricket but those which matter a lot. Had Babar taken that single, who knows, Pakistan would still have had 7 wickets in the tank.

For Australia, they did what they're known for and pressed Pakistan by taking early wickets. Starc plucked two, Cummins and Hazlewood with one each having the Aussies eyeing a comprehensive victory at the Optus. Following the declaration, Pakistan had their backs against the wall and their situation worsened as they lost both their openers cheaply against Mitchell Starc's initial onslaught. They didn't give the visitors a single opportunity to settle and stitch partnerships as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. It further deteriorated with Babar Azam going cheaply back into the hut.

Earlier, Australia, with their attacking batting, piled up a huge target of 450 for the visitors, thanks to Usman Khawaja's 90 and the local boy Mitch Marsh's 63, which put the hosts in a commanding position. They played like the defending champions of the WTC. Khurram Shahzad was the lone warrior from Pakistan who plucked three scalps.

It's time for a breather as the players take Tea on Day 4. It was surgical precision from the captain, Pat Cummins, in that over to Babar Azam, wherein he got his man. He landed the ball on a hanky, as in, created a patch around the good length area where he consistently honed it ball after ball and on the wicket ball - BOOM - it reared off a length and took the outside edge.

Pakistan, on the other hand, once again showed a good fight as their bowlers used the conditions well. It was Khurram Shahzad again who broke through in this session while Aamer Jamal almost got Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Usman Khawaja in the same over but luck was not in his favour and he only ended up with the dismissal of Head. They made life hard for the Aussies batters but couldn't get any more wickets and let the hosts extend their already massive lead. Afridi bowled well without any rewards and was a frustrated figure. Session Summary - 102 runs and 2 wickets in 25 overs! Australia would be grateful for their huge first innings as batting on this wicket haven't been easy at all. Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja started decently surviving a few close calls, but the latter couldn't stick around for long. Travis Head also went back cheaply, Mitchell Marsh joined Khawaja and initially, they struggled a bit, but built up a fine partnership of 79 runs to put even more pressure on the visitors. Khawaja who has been a rock for the hosts in this format registered a fine half-century while Marsh got a life and made the most out of it as they upped the scoring rate towards the end of the session and took the lead over 400 runs. It will be interesting to see when the Aussies declare their innings, as considering the conditions, this is a match-winning lead for them.

On the other hand, Pakistan are still in the back seat even with a fighting performance.  Pakistan started the Day 3 with the dismissal of Khurram Shahzad on the very first over in the first session but there was a positive instinct from the Pakistani batters as Babar Azam and Imam put up a decent stand and the latter scored his deserving half-century as well. As Babar got dismissed by the local boy of Perth and Imam stamped his own feet into fire for being restless back in the crease. Saud and Salman helped them by providing some runs, but they still got all out trailing by more than 200 runs. However, their pacers started brilliantly as Khurram, the emerging debutant got rid of the centurion from the first innings, Warner while he dismissed Marnus as well soon after, but they were a bit unlucky to not get more wickets as Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja have built up a good partnership and remained unbeaten. The Shaheens have to do something to break their partnership as they could be a threat for them. They should also re-strategies and continue with the same aggressive way as they started their bowling on Day 3. Join us in a bit to catch all the live action.

Australia is proving why they are the Test Champions of the World! The Aussies were exceptional on Day 3 with the ball as their pacers found the right lengths to bowl. Nathan Lyon was fantastic as and is on the verge of creating history as he stands on 499 Test wickets. The pace trio Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood, all together took 5 wickets while Mitchel Marsh got the big fish of the lake, Babar Azam. In their second innings, the Aussies didn't make the perfect start as David and Marnus got dismissed in less than 10 overs and they scored the lowest 10-over score in the last 30 years in this format. But Smith and Khawaja did well to ride that storm to avoid any more hiccups till Stumps. On Day 4 the Aussies would want to bat as long as they can and to set up a massive target for the Men in Green.

Hello and a warm welcome folks to our coverage of Day 4 of the first Test between Australia and Pakistan at the Perth Stadium for the Benaud-Qadir Trophy. The Aussies are in control leading by 300 runs and will look to extend it further while it is a really tough ask for the visitors to get back in this Test.

.... DAY 4, SESSION 1 ...

Right then, that is it from a riveting Day 3 of this 'West Test' where Australia still has a firm grip on the game while Pakistan have also shown that they will not go down without a fight. The action moves to Day 4 where we might see this Test go towards a result or even get one. Steven Smith is in for an interview. On the blow he took on his left forearm, he replies that it resulted in a minor bruise. Shares that it was challenging out there, and it had gotten dark. Further adds that Shaheen Afridi has a whippy action but is happy to have gotten through that phase. On the possible declaration call, he replies that it is up to the leaders to sort it out. Adds that they are in a good spot, and they will have to bat well in the first session and make calls later.

Pakistan, on the other hand, once again looked solid in the first session with Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam steadying things for them nicely with a 48-run stand before the latter was undone by a beauty from local boy Mitchell Marsh. Imam lost his patience as well and went after Nathan Lyon throwing his wicket away by playing a needless shot. Sarfaraz Ahmed also couldn't do much as he fell victim to a trademark Mitchell Starc inswinger. Agha Salman and Saud Shakeel got some runs under their belt but they still couldn't go past the follow-on score. As the hosts did not enforce the follow-on, Pakistan came out to bowl trailing by 216 runs but Shaheen Afridi and Khurram Shahzad were exceptional in their opening spells getting two early breakthroughs as well. They kept the pressure on and were a bit unlucky to not get more wickets, but they did not let the Aussies completely get away with the game.

Australia started the 'Moving Day' on a positive note as their skipper, Pat Cummins removed the nightwatchman in the very first over. However, they could not build on that and allowed the visitors to create a partnership. The decision to bring Mitchell Marsh into the attack worked like a charm as he got the big fish, Babar Azam which gave renewed energy to the Aussies as they picked up a couple more before Lunch. The trio of Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc took five wickets with the latter ending with three. Nathan Lyon took his 499th Test wicket but will have to wait to achieve the big milestone. The hosts played the waiting game brilliantly with the ball as well as the bat. When they came out for the second innings, they faced a completely different Pakistan attack as David Warner went back for a duck while Marnus Labuschagne took a painful blow on his right hand before getting out for not much. They were made to work hard for every run and they scored their lowest 10-over score in the last 30 years in this format. Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja rode that storm well without giving their wickets and gradually got set and built up a good partnership to get them out of that position and remained unbeaten till Stumps.

An eventful Day comes to an end! Session Summary - 84 runs and 2 wickets in 33 overs. Day 3 is known as the 'Moving Day', and even with a determined and fighting overall effort from Pakistan, this game has moved in favour of the hosts as they lead by 300 runs. Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith have survived a hostile period from the Pakistani pacers and will be looking to extend this lead even further to set up a massive target while the visitors will want to make early inroads and restrict the Aussies from doing that.

Australia have been made to work hard for their runs and they currently lead by 246 runs. Also, Usman Khawaja is up for a flash interview. He says that the wicket is still a good one but some balls are rising up and some are keeping low. Adds that the midnset is to score runs and he is waiting for any opportunity to do that. Tells that Smith is playing well and that they will be looking to be proactive. Says that Marnus Labuschagne is tough guy but he was a bit worried when he took off his gloves. He expects Marnus to be fine.
