Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 6 wickets

Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi

Right then, that's all from this game. It is Mumbai who have secured their first win of the season whereas Delhi will have to wait a little longer for their first victory. The Indian T20 League, 2023 action continues on Wednesday, 12th April where Chennai will host Rajasthan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and the first ball will be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). As always, you can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of Mumbai is the Player of the Match for his brilliant knock of 65 runs from 45 balls. He says that getting over the line is a good feeling. Adds that they have been working hard with the team and getting the first win is always special and they will cherish it. Tells that they played a Test here not long ago and the pitch did not look that different and that is why they selected the spinners which turned out to be a good decision and credits his pacers as well. Mentions that when he went out to bat his plan was to make use of the Powerplay and then see how the game goes. Tells that Tilak Varma batted well too and the big partnership with him was crucial. Says that they have a lot of youngsters and they need to back them up to give them confidence and they don't want to make drastic changes according to results. Ends by saying they want to create a good atmosphere.

Time for the presentations...

One of the stars with the bat for Mumbai, Cameron Green is in for a chat. He says that he is barely breathing, but is happy to be on the winning end. Tells that the chat between him and David was to be busy at the wicket and luckily they were able to hit a few maximums. Mentions that they are here for moments like this and it is exciting. Ends by saying that he knew he was safe when the throw went to the other end and says that Tim David is a big man and can dive.

David Warner, the skipper of Delhi, says that the last three games have been amazing in this tournament. Adds that he is disappointed to be on the wrong end, but credits his bowlers to make a game out of it. Tells that Anrich Nortje and Mustafizur Rahman were brilliant, and in this format, it only takes one or two balls to change the game. Mentions that as Tim David was running at the batter's end he tried to throw over him, but it did not work out. Says that they need to stop losing wickets in clumps as it kills the momentum, and praises Axar Patel for his amazing knock, but admits that the par total was around 180 here.

Earlier in the game, after Rohit Sharma called it right and opted to bowl first, Delhi did lose Prithvi Shaw early but David Warner and Manish Pandey kept the scoreboard ticking by scoring freely. The duo stitched a 43-run stand and at that stage, Delhi were going along nicely in their batting effort. However, Pandey's dismissal meant Delhi lost their way during the middle overs. Axar Patel joined David Warner and forged a solid recovery with a 67-run partnership. After the departure of Axar Patel, no other batter was able to maximize the final two overs and Delhi were bowled out inside the 20 overs. For Mumbai, Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla were the stars with the ball accounting for 3 wickets each.

After failing to bat the full quota of 20 overs, Delhi had their backs against the wall and they surely gave it their all in their bowling effort. The home team did not manage to start well and they leaked a lot of runs in the Powerplay. Their spinners did find some good purchases on this surface but were unable to find any success during the middle overs. They did manage to get rid of Tilak Varma and capitalised on that scalp by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma in the space of a few deliveries. At that stage, Delhi sensed an opening but it was always going to be tough against the strong batting unit of Mumbai. With only 4 runs to defend, Anrich Nortje bowled an exceptional final over but it wasn't enough on the night.

In their pursuit of 173, Mumbai were off to a flying start courtesy of the opening pair. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan found boundaries at will and the away side raced to 70 in 7 overs. Just when the duo was going along nicely, a mixup between the two resulted in the departure of Ishan Kishan. This unfortunate dismissal did not deter Rohit Sharma as he kept going at the other end and ensured that Mumbai kept up with the required run rate. Tilak Varma was at his fluent best as well and stitched a 68-run stand with his skipper. At that stage, it looked like Mumbai would cruise home but they were pegged back, losing three wickets in quick succession. Impact Player Tim David was sent into bat and he along with Cameron Green steadied the ship. With 5 runs needed off the final over, Tim David and Cameron Green failed to find the big shots against Anrich Nortje but held their nerves to take Mumbai over the line.

The Indian T20 League, 2023 continues to deliver cliffhangers every night and at the end of this one, it is Mumbai who come out on top. Mumbai were made to work hard but they are finally off the mark in the Indian T20 League, 2023. As far as Delhi are concerned, it was a case of so near yet so far but they will take pride in taking the game till the final ball.

We are back for the chase! The players are making their way out to the middle now. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan are the two openers for Mumbai. Delhi have used their Impact Player as Mukesh Kumar replaces Prithvi Shaw and has the new ball in his hand. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Delhi have posted a fighting total on the board, but they would have liked some more as dew could be a factor. Mumbai have the momentum on their side and they will need to start well to set the base for this chase. They have the quality, but they have to show that on the field now. It is going to be an exciting chase to watch. Let's see how it unfolds.

The star of the moment for Delhi, Axar Patel is in for a flash interview. Says that he was backing himself and went through with his shots if the ball was in his slot. Adds that the ball was stopping on the surface and holding the shape while hitting was important. Mentions that he tried not to hit the ball hard. Feels that 172 is a challenging total on this wicket and hopes to defend this total.

Mumbai, on the other hand will have mixed feelings about their bowling performance. They got an early breakthrough, but could not build on them. However, Piyush Chawla absolutely brilliant in the middle overs and got rid of the middle order alone. They were a bit sloppy in the field and dropped crucial chances which has cost them some extra runs. But they pulled things back nicely in the last two overs with Jason Behrendorff and Riley Meredith coming good. Chawla was the pick of the bowlers with his three wickets while Jason Behrendorff also got three scalps. Riley Meredith picked up a couple of wickets and Hrithik Shokeen got one to his name. The onus is now on the batters to get them their first win of the season.

Delhi got off to a decent start with Prithvi Shaw playing some lusty blows before getting out. Then it was David Warner and Manish Pandey who steadied the ship for a bit, but Pandey could not stick around for long. They lost their way in the middle as they kept losing wickets, but just like in all the other matches, Warner held one end and registered another half-century. However, Axar Patel took charge and smashed a brilliant fifty off just 23 balls to provide the much-needed impetus. Both of them added 67 runs together but they got out in the 19th over for 51 and 54 respectively. That started a collapse for them as Delhi could only score six runs after that and were bowled out.

What a comeback from Mumbai! They only conceded seven runs in the last two overs and picked up five wickets to bundle Delhi out for 172. Before that, Delhi were looking good to go beyond 190, but the bowlers stepped up and the away team will be the happier side going into the break.

19.4 W 0

OUT! BOWLED 'EM! Delhi have been bowled out for 172! Riley Meredith goes full and straight at the stumps, Anrich Nortje backs away to go through the off side but is undone by the raw pace. Ends up getting his leg pole uprooted and that brings an end to Delhi's innings.

19.3 4

FOUR! Slower and into the wicket on leg, Anrich Nortje shimmies down the track and swipes across the line. Gets plenty of bat on it and beats Hrithik Shokeen at deep mid-wicket for a boundary.

We are all set to start. The Mumbai players make their way out to the middle followed by the two Delhi openers. Prithvi Shaw and David Warner will open the innings for Delhi. Jason Behrendorff will start the proceedings with the new ball for Mumbai. Let's play...

Impact players for Delhi - Mukesh Kumar, Aman Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Pravin Dubey, Ishant Sharma.

Delhi (Playing XI) - David Warner (C), Prithvi Shaw (In for Mukesh Kumar), Manish Pandey, Yash Dhull (In for Khaleel Ahmed), Rovman Powell, Axar Patel, Lalit Yadav, Abishek Porel (WK), Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Mustafizur Rahman (In for Rilee Rossouw).

Impact Players for Mumbai - Tristan Stubbs, Tim David, Kumar Kartikeya, Arjun Tendulkar, Ramandeep Singh.

Mumbai (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green, Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera (In for Tim David), Hrithik Shokeen, Arshad Khan, Jason Behrendorff, Piyush Chawla, Riley Meredith (In for Tristan Stubbs).

David Warner, the captain of Delhi, says they would have bowled first as well. Adds that they need to find the rhythm and get sharper as a group and when you lose wickets regularly it is always hard to come back. Informs that they have a forced change as Khaleel Ahmed is injured and Yash Dhull comes in for him. Also adds that Rilee Rossouw makes way for Mustafizur Rahman.

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of Mumbai says that they will bowl first. Adds that they haven't done well batting first and thought having a total to chase could be good for them. Shares that the pitch looks dry and dew might be a factor. Mentions that the senior players need to step up when things are not going right. Informs Riley Meredith comes in for Tristan Stubbs and Jofra Archer is still unavailable.

TOSS - Mumbai have won the toss and they have decided to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Ian Bishop is pitchside. He says that one of the square boundaries is the shortest but hitting down the ground will be a bit difficult. Chris Morris joins him and says that there are some grass patches on it and there may be some uneven bounce. Tells that the pacers can use the short balls to their advantage, but the batters can play their shots too. Says that the dew can be a factor and teams will be looking to chase.

Mumbai, on the other hand, are struggling just like last season, and they need to turn things around quickly. The big names like Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Cameron Green haven't been at their best, but the positive thing for them is that youngsters like Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera have shown some quality. Their bowling looks a bit weak without Bumrah, and Jofra Archer is yet to find his feet. Piyush Chawla has to use his experience to handle things for them and guide the youngsters. They will hope that things click in this game and their star players get their form back to register their first victory of the season. It is very tough to pick a winner, and we will have to wait to find out who gets the better of the other. Stay tuned for the toss and other updates.

Delhi have lost three games in a row, which is not the start they would have hoped for this season. David Warner has scored runs in all games, but he has struggled with his strike rate a bit. However, that could also be due to the fact that he has had no support from any other batters. Their bowling has also been inconsistent, but with Anrich Nortje back in the side, it gives them good balance. They have a decent team, but the players haven't lived up to the expectations, and this game is a perfect opportunity to get their first win.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of Match 16 in the Indian T20 League where we are in to witness an age-old rivalry between Mumbai and Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Both teams are still searching for their first win of the season and as the stakes are high for this match, we can expect a close contest.

... MATCH DAY ...

Match number 16 in the Indian T20 League, 2023, will see a clash of teams with similar fortunes, as Delhi will host Mumbai at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. As things stand, Delhi find themselves languishing at the bottom with no wins from their three games, whereas Mumbai are placed a spot above them in ninth place with two losses from as many matches. As far as Delhi are concerned, they suffered their third straight loss in their last outing against Rajasthan. After opting to bowl first, the Delhi bowlers could not find much success, and they were set a daunting target to chase. With the bat, their batters could not keep up with the required run rate and fell short by 57 runs. In the batting department, skipper David Warner has truly led from the front without much support from the rest of the batting unit. The likes of Prithvi Shaw, Rilee Rossouw, and Rovman Powell will hold the key to Delhi’s efforts to bring their campaign on track. Delhi's bowlers have lacked sharpness in the three games, and it is about time the likes of Anrich Nortje, Khaleel Ahmed, and Kuldeep Yadav step up. Their opponents, Mumbai, were handed their second defeat of the campaign in the previous encounter by Chennai. After being put into bat and getting off to a solid start, Mumbai lost their way and could only muster 157 runs. With not a big total to defend, Mumbai's bowlers tried hard, but it did not prove to be enough on the night. Like Delhi, Mumbai’s batting has not clicked, with Tilak Varma being the lone warrior. As Mumbai search for their first win of the campaign, Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav will be crucial with the bat. Piyush Chawla has been a revelation with his leg spin, and so was Kumar Kartikeya in the last game against Chennai. Jofra Archer was rested as a precautionary measure in the last game, and Mumbai fans will be hoping for his swift return to strengthen the blunt-looking pace attack. Both teams have shown moments of brilliance and are fighting for their first win. Who are you backing to claim their first points of the season?
