Mumbai Indians beat Lucknow Super Giants by 81 runs

MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Right then, at the start of the week, we had four teams vying for a spot in the final and Chennai have already made it through. Lucknow are out and now it's down to two teams - Mumbai and Gujarat to battle it out in Qualifier 2 and make a claim for a spot in the final. That game will be played on Friday, the 26th of May in Ahmedabad and will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). It is set up to be an enticing battle and our build-up to it will begin a lot earlier as well. Do join us and till then, take care and goodbye!

Akash Madhwal is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his sensational figures of 3.3-0-5-5! Madhwal says that he was practising hard and was waiting for this opportunity and also mentions that he was doing engineering but decided to pursue his passion for playing cricket and is happy that it has come off. Adds that the coaches and management set up certain executions for them in the nets and that's what he focuses on. Says that he is proud of himself and hopes that the team goes on and wins the trophy. On comparisons with Jasprit Bumrah, he says that he is happy with the comparison but he still has a long way to go. Ends by saying that Pooran's wicket was his favourite and his family would also be proud of him.

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of Mumbai, says that people do not expect them to do what they have done but they manage to do it somehow. Mentions that they knew had a lot of work to do at the start. On Akash Madhwal, he says that he was part of the team as a support bowler last season. Adds that they knew what he had. Feels that once Jofra Archer was gone they needed someone to bowl at the death. Shares that he has the skills and character to do the job. Also says that it is important to make young guys feel special and make them feel part of the team. Shares that they enjoyed fielding and it was good to see everyone contributing on the field. Mentions that they knew the whole team would be needed to come to the party here in Chennai.

The Presentation ceremony...

Cameron Green is in for a chat. He says that it is a pretty good feeling and feels that it was their most complete game. Adds that it is nice that everything is going well and clicking at the moment. Mentions that Akash Madhwal has been a game changer for them. Shares that they had a poor day in the field in the last game and their coach had spoken about hunting in the pack. Feels that is important to bring that energy while bowling second. On Akash Madhwal, he says that ever since he came in, they realized he is special. Adds that he is not overawed by the stage despite playing in his first Indian T20 League season. States that Gujarat are the best team in the competition and it is going to be a tough challenge on their home turf.

Krunal Pandya, the skipper of Lucknow, says that they were in a really good position and adds that everything started from where he played that shot. He says that he takes full responsibility and blames himself for it. Mentions that the wicket was good and the ball came on nicely. Reckons that the wicket remained the same throughout and they just had to bat better. On Quinton de Kock's exclusion, he says that he is a quality player and it was a tough call to leave him out. Adds that Kyle Mayers' record here was great so they went with him. Shares that the Mumbai batters bat well against pace so he thought of starting with spin.

Earlier in the game, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first as he thought the wicket would get slower later on and this decision was spot on. Mumbai lost two early wickets but then Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav started to take on the bowling and got away a lot of boundaries. Both of them fell but useful contributions from Tilak Varma and then the Impact Player Nehal Wadhera toward the end got them to a commanding total. For Lucknow, it was about bowling well in patches but whenever Naveen-ul-Haq came on, he got wickets, ending up with four in total. Yash Thakur got three wickets as well and did an excellent job but their spinners couldn't make much of an impact. Coming to the chase, it was all Mumbai as only three Lucknow batters got to double-figures and only Marcus Stoinis got over the 20-run mark as he made 40. Mumbai were clinical with the ball and in the field and bundled out Lucknow for just 101 runs with Akash Madhwal picking up five wickets for just 5 runs.

Lucknow will be scratching their heads trying to figure out what happened in the last hour or so as they went from being in a decent position to just bundling over in a matter of a few minutes. They didn't have an idle start with the bat as Prerak Mankad and Kyle Mayers both got out early. Krunal Pandya and Marcus Stoinis then steadied the ship with the latter striking the ball cleanly. Krunal though never got going and eventually got out and this opened the floodgates for Lucknow. Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran got out soon after and then came the most unbelievable phase of the game which included three run-outs. Deepak Hooda was involved in all three of them but the first one, which saw Stoinis collide with Hooda and then walk off was the most damaging one. In the end, they were all out inside 17 overs and fell a long way short of the target.

After putting on a big total of 182 runs on a pitch that seemed more suited to the bowlers, Mumbai were able to pick up a couple of wickets in the Powerplay. For a while, they weren't able to get wickets but once they got rid of Krunal Pandya, they were able to get wickets in a heap. Akash Madhwal bowled a sensational spell as he sent back Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran off consecutive deliveries and put Mumbai in command. Excellent out-fielding coupled with a few judgment errors from the Lucknow batters, Mumbai inflicted three run-outs. Madhwal then rounded up a five-star performance by picking up a five-wicket haul and getting the final wicket of the game as well. All in all, a perfect game for Mumbai.

MUMBAI STAY ALIVE! What a resounding performance from the five-time champions as they pick up their first-ever win against Lucknow and for them, it couldn't have come at a better time. Just like Chennai, Mumbai have once again proved their mettle in the playoffs and have now set a date against Gujarat in Qualifier 2.

16.3 W 0

OUT! TIMBER! Akash Madhwal ends with a five-wicket haul and finishes things off for Mumbai! Comes from 'round the wicket and nails the yorker, on the off stump, Mohsin Khan clears his front leg and swings through the line. He misses and sees his off stump pegged back. Joy on the faces of Mumbai players and fans but dismay on the faces of the Lucknow players. This has been a dominating 81-run win by Rohit Sharma and Co.

16.2 1

Length delivery, on middle, Naveen-ul-Haq works this from the inner half of the bat to mid-wicket for a single.

16.1 0

Serves it on a good length, Naveen-ul-Haq uses his feet and pushes it back to the bowler.

Strategic break! Well then, just 4 overs remain and the game seems over for Lucknow as they have just one wicket in hand and need 83 more runs to win. Mumbai had their noses in front in the first half of the chase but the catastrophe that has unfolded in the last few overs for Lucknow has been nothing short of self-destructive. Mumbai have bowled well too and Akash Madhwal has certainly stood out and they are now on the verge of making it through to Qualifier 2.

We are back for the chase. The two umpires make their way out to the middle. The Mumbai players stride out to the centre as well and they are joined by the two Lucknow openers. Lucknow bring on Kyle Mayers as their Impact Player in place of Yash Thakur. Mayers will open the innings for Lucknow along with Prerak Mankad. Jason Behrendorff will start with the new ball for Mumbai. Off we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Mumbai have their noses ahead at the halfway mark. At one stage, they were on course for a total in excess of 190 but this is still an imposing total. On the other hand, Lucknow will be content with this target and will need to bat smartly to get over the line here. Can the Mumbai spinners spin their side to victory or will it be the Lucknow batters who rise to the challenge? We shall find out shortly. Back in a bit for Lucknow's reply.

Naveen-ul-Haq, the star with the ball for Lucknow is down for a chat. He says that the ball didn't do much and they thought it would grip but the ball came on nicely. Adds that it is a better wicket than the previous game between Chennai and Gujarat. Mentions that they expected a breakthrough from him as he is the leader of a fairly young attack and is happy that he was able to get that breakthrough for his team.

As far as Lucknow are concerned, it was a tale of two halves for them. For Lucknow, Krunal Pandya opted to start with spin from both ends and it did not go as per plan as they were taken to the cleaners by the Mumbai openers. Despite dismissing both openers in quick succession, they were unable to put a squeeze in the Powerplay. Naveen-ul-Haq was brought back on in the 11th over and repaid the skipper's faith by striking twice. These twin blows allowed Lucknow to claw their way back into the game nicely in the second half of the innings. Yash Thakur did concede 14 runs in the final over but Lucknow would be pleased with their bowling effort.

Nehal Wadhera holes out on the final ball not before providing a late flourish to the Mumbai innings! After Rohit Sharma called it right and opted to put runs on the board, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan got their side off to a flying start before departing in successive overs. Coming off an unbeaten century in the last outing, Cameron Green got going straightaway and carried the momentum forward with Suryakumar Yadav. Both batters departed in the space of two balls which pegged them back big time. Tim David and Tilak Varma got together and did a decent repair job with a 41-run stand. Towards the end, Impact Player Nehal Wadhera played a impactful innings to help Mumbai reach 182.

All in readiness for the Eliminator to begin! The two umpires make their way out to the middle as Marcus Stoinis is seen providing a few motivating words in the Lucknow huddle before their players take their places on the field. It will be the usual pair of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan to open the innings for Mumbai. Lucknow skipper, Krunal Pandya has the new ball in hand and is ready to get things underway with some left-arm spin. Let's play...

Krunal Pandya, the skipper of Lucknow, says that he is looking forward to this game and adds that they have played good cricket in the last three games. Mentions that it has been an up-and-down season and feels the good thing is that they never gave up. Reckons that they have good match winners and it has been a team effort which is a good sign. States that they have covered all the bases and now they just want to go out there and play good cricket. Ends by informing that they would have batted as well.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai says that they will bat first and says that it is a typical Chennai wicket and they don't know how much wear and tear the pitch will show. Adds that in Mumbai you want to chase but here with a bit of a longer boundary and pitch getting slower, batting first is the way. Mentions that the boys are getting better and there have been a lot of ups and downs which has helped them learn and they are ready for this encounter. Informs that they have made just one change with Kumar Kartikeya going out and Hrithik Shokeen coming in.

Impact Players nominated by Mumbai - Ramandeep Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Vishnu Vinod, Kumar Kartikeya and Sandeep Warrier.

Mumbai (Playing XI) - Ishan Kishan (WK), Rohit Sharma (C), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma (In for Nehal Wadhera), Tim David, Chris Jordan, Hrithik Shokeen (In for Kumar Kartikeya), Piyush Chawla, Jason Behrendorff, Akash Madhwal.

Impact Players nominated by Lucknow - Kyle Mayers, Daniel Sams, Yudhvir Singh, Swapnil Singh and Amit Mishra.

Lucknow (Playing XI) - Marcus Stoinis, Prerak Mankad, Krunal Pandya (C), Ayush Badoni, Nicholas Pooran (WK), Deepak Hooda (In for Quinton de Kock), Krishnappa Gowtham, Ravi Bishnoi, Naveen-ul-Haq, Yash Thakur (In for Karan Sharma), Mohsin Khan.

TOSS - The coin toss lands in the favour of Rohit Sharma and Mumbai have opted to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Ian Bishop and Matthew Hayden are pitchside. Bishop starts by informing that this is a different pitch than the one used for Qualifier 1. Adds that the boundaries are contrasting and mentions that the straight boundary is of 77m. Hayden says that this pitch is being used for the 3rd time and adds that the sides chasing have won the game. Informs that the average first innings score is 142 and mentions that this is an abrasive surface and expects lots of action for the spinners. Reckons that there will be a little bit of swing with the new ball. Bishop ends by saying that adapting will be the key here.

Labelled as slow starters, Mumbai did begin slowly this season as well, but the five-time champions peaked at the right time to secure a spot in the playoffs. Their batting is coming along nicely, and the return of form for Suryakumar Yadav has bolstered their batting tremendously. With the ball, they have blown hot and cold at the death and would want to improve on that aspect. Who are you backing to deliver the knockout punch and proceed to Qualifier 2? Don't go anywhere, as the toss and team news is not far away.

Lucknow's route to the playoffs wasn't an easy one, and losing their skipper, KL Rahul did not help their cause one bit. However, Krunal Pandya led his side well to help them reach their second consecutive playoffs. Their opening combination does lack stability, but it is made up for by the firing of Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran in the middle order. Spinners have been successful in spinning a web and will hold the fort at this venue.

Hello and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our coverage of the Eliminator of the 2023 Indian T20 League, which sees Lucknow take on Mumbai. A mouthwatering clash awaits us at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where the stakes will be higher than ever for these two teams who are jostling for a place in Qualifier 2.

... MATCH DAY …

It is now time for the Eliminator in the 2023 Indian T20 League, which sees Lucknow square off against Mumbai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Lucknow finished the league stage in 3rd position with 17 points from 8 wins and one no result, whereas Mumbai ended the league stage in 4th place with 16 points from 8 wins. By virtue of not finishing in the top two, Lucknow and Mumbai have to take the Eliminator route, where a loss for either side will bring an end to their campaign. The winner of Eliminator will proceed to Qualifier 2, where they will take on the loser of Qualifier 1 for a place in the final. As far as Lucknow are concerned, they did lose KL Rahul to injury midway through the tournament, but Krunal Pandya and Co. punched above their weight and made it to the playoffs. With the bat, Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran have done the heavy lifting for them, with Krunal Pandya and Ayush Badoni chipping in with handy contributions. In the bowling department, Ravi Bishnoi, Krunal Pandya, Yash Thakur, and Naveen-ul-Haq have put their hands up on different occasions and stepped up for the team. On the other hand, Mumbai were off to a shaky start in the edition but found form in the second half and secured a playoff berth on the last day of the league stage. In the batting department, Suryakumar Yadav has stood out and has found good support in Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green, and Rohit Sharma. The experienced leggie Piyush Chawla leads the wicket-taking charts for them and will hold the key in this all-important clash. Jason Behrendorff has consistently found success with the new ball, while Akash Madhwal has been exceptional with his yorkers in the death overs. These two sides have met three times in the Indian T20 League, with Lucknow emerging victorious on all occasions. Will Lucknow continue their dominance over Mumbai? Or will it be Mumbai to spring a surprise in the Eliminator? We will find out soon enough.
