The Kiwi squad celebrates in jubilation and with this, a thrilling white-ball series concludes with New Zealand dominating Sri Lanka in both formats, securing 2-1 victories in the T20Is and ODIs. Looking ahead, New Zealand travels to Pakistan for an exciting triangular ODI series with Pakistan and South Africa, beginning their campaign against Pakistan at Multan on Saturday 8th February at 8:30 am GMT. As for Sri Lanka, they head home after their final ODI before the Champions Trophy to face the mighty Australians in two Test matches at Galle, commencing Wednesday 29th January at 4:30 am GMT. Cricket fans need not worry about any void, as several franchise tournaments are in full swing. The Big Bash League approaches its climax, while the SA20 and ILT20 are just getting started, alongside the Bangladesh Premier League at its full tilt. Feel free to follow all these exciting competitions. Until next time, goodbye and take care!

Mitchell Santner, the New Zealand skipper is up for a chat and says this is not the way they wanted to end the series but credit goes to Lanka for outplaying them. Mentions that they bowled really well in the Power Play and took their catches and that helped them massively. Reckons that they have to take it on the chin and keep going forward.

Charith Asalanka, the captain of Sri Lanka is up for a chat now. He says it is unfortunate that they lost the series but it is a pleasure to watch the boys making a comeback like this. Adds that these kind of wins give a lot of boost to their morale. Appreciates the New Zealand team and says that they played good cricket throughout the series. Ends by thanking the authorities and everyone involved in the smooth conduct, and goes on to thank them for their amazing hospitality.

He says that it's been a pleasure for him and this performance will provide him a huge confidence boost. Adds that they didn't do well in the first two games but they are delighted to win this last ODI. Mentions that they identified the areas to work and improve on. Ends by saying they will go back and work on those to get better day by day.

... THE PRESENTATION CEREMONY ...

Earlier, Sri Lanka's batting unit, led by half-centuries from Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, and Janith Liyanage, helped post 290. Kamindu Mendis narrowly missed out on a half-century, falling four runs short. Matt Henry's four-wicket haul was the highlight of New Zealand's bowling effort, with Mitchell Santner taking two wickets and Nathan Smith and Michael Bracewell claiming one each.

Sri Lanka's bowling was exceptional, with the bowlers displaying outstanding discipline. They received superb support from the fielders, who were snatching every half-chance that came their way. Asitha Fernando was the standout performer, claiming three crucial wickets at the top to leave the New Zealand batting unit reeling. Eshan Malinga and Maheesh Theekshana too took three each while Janith Liyanage took one as well.

Chasing down a big total the Kiwis never got going. The Sri Lankans were all over the hosts and they picked wickets regularly and did not allow the batters to settle even for a moment. Mark Chapman was the only one who showed some fight and managed to score 81 while the other just couldn't do anything significant. It took the Kiwis to wait till the 8th wicket to see a 50-run stand which was knitted by Mark Chapman and Nathan Smith.

Sri Lanka has ended the ODI series on a high note, mirroring their path from the T20I series. Sri Lanka have defeated New Zealand by 140 runs in the final match of this tour.

OUT! BOWLED'EM! Theekshana wraps it up in style and a bittersweet end for Sri Lanka in this white-ball tour! Maheesh Theekshana stays around the stumps and darts it in on a fuller length, almost yorks and cramps the batter for room. Mark Chapman though sits down and looks to sweep it across. The ball lands and skids through quickly and goes off the toe-end of the bat and disturbs the furniture in a flash. SRI LANKA WIN BY 140 RUNS!

29.34

FOUR! Into the 80s now is Chapman! Drags the length down does Maheesh Theekshana, on middle, Mark Chapman rocks back and pulls it to deep square leg for a boundary.

29.20

Oh, this one stays a tad bit low. Flatter and quicker outside off, Mark Chapman squats a bit to slog it away but misses to connect as the ball passes under his bat.

29.10

A good shot but Chapman denies a single there. Surely, he will like to play most of the balls now. Straight and flat around off, slashed away to deep cover.

Commentary

We are back with the chase. The umpires are out in the middle followed by the players of Sri Lanka who scatter out to the park. For New Zealand, Will Young and Rachin Ravindra walk out as the opening pair. Asitha Fernando will bowl the first over of the chase. Off we go...

... The Run Chase ...

Well then, the first innings has flown by and the momentum has shifted back and forth through and through. Spinners have found a good purchase from this deck once the ball has gotten old. And that's where the Sri Lankan spin attack would become effective if they get their lines and lengths correct. With the likes of Hasaranga, Theekshana, and Liyanage in the ranks, it is not going to be an easy chase for the Kiwi batters. An all-important run chase is up next shortly. Do not go anywhere!

Coming into the final ten overs, Janith Liyanage was settled at one end, while Chamindu took his own time to get going. The two formed a good little partnership with Liyanage doing the most heavy lifting with the bat. But it was Wanindu Hasaranga who attempted to provide that final surge for the tourists with Liyanage notching up a crucial half-century which propelled Sri Lanka to post a challenging total on the board. For New Zealand, Matt Henry was the most successful bowler who claimed 4 wickets to his name, while Santner tried to stem the flow of runs with a couple of wickets of his own as well. While William O'Rourke looked a bit rusty throughout and Nathan Smith too, leaked a few quick runs with a wicket to his name.

Sri Lanka's position further got worrisome with the re-introduction of Matt Henry who struck quickly and removed well-settled Kamindu Mendis. With both set batters in the sheds in the span of just a few deliveries, Sri Lanka had to start from scratch. Pathum Nissanka, who got retired hurt earlier, came out to bat again to bail Sri Lanka from a serious position. Still hobbling to run, Nissanka struck a few lusty blows to retrieve the run rate before eventually perishing. In this phase, Sri Lanka lost three wickets and scored a handy 52 runs.

The Mendis alliance built a strong resilient partnership and paced their innings pretty well, with Kusal attacking while Kamindu played anchor. Though Kusal reached his fifty swiftly, New Zealand's spinners found grip with the aging ball, striking twice in quick succession. Sri Lanka lost momentum, slipping from 156/1 to 160/3 as Asalanka fell for a duck. Sri Lanka, on the back of that 87-run stand for the second wicket, added 47 runs in those ten overs but at the cost of two crucial wickets.

This little phase was cashed on well by the Kiwi bowlers as Santner and Smith both stemmed the flow of runs for a bit. Sri Lanka had to rebuild during this phase. Both Kamindu and Kusal Mendis neutralized the threat of a collapse and knocked around to rotate the strike, also finding a few boundaries eventually. Having notched up 66 off the first ten overs, the tourists cruised at a gentle pace and mustered up 46 runs in the next ten overs. New Zealand had only used four bowlers until this point.

Sri Lanka started well on a bouncy pitch, with Pathum Nissanka timing his shots perfectly while Avishka Fernando struggled for rhythm at the other end. Despite decent bowling spells from Henry and O'Rourke, Nissanka kept finding boundaries and reached his fifty as well. But, unfortunately for him, he got retired hurt just after that. The momentum sharply shifted when Nathan Smith dismissed the Avishka Fernando sooner who looked a bit rusty throughout his inning.

A strong finish for Sri Lanka towards the backend and they would be delighted to get past 290. They have managed to squeeze out 76 runs in the last ten overs. A job well done by the lower order that came to the rescue under pressure. For New Zealand, they leaked too many runs in the death overs and couldn't put on a lid and run through the Sri Lankan tail.

48.50

Full and wide outside off, pace off. Janith Liyanage swings and misses.

Change of bat for Janith Liyanage. The reserve player from the Sri Lankan dugout rushes out with the willows. Liyanage selects a heavy one and is good to continue.

Short-pitched, on off, Maheesh Theekshana dabs this to third man for one.

48.34

FOUR! Such strokes would do for Sri Lanka and Maheesh Theekshana. Good length on off, Maheesh Theekshana plays this very late, opens the face of his bat and looks to run this down to short third but gets it really fine and this beats the keeper before racing away to the fence.

48.20

Maheesh Theekshana, the hattrick man from the previous game, walks out to bat at number 9.

47.4W

OUT! BOWLED'EM! You miss, I hit says Henry! A snorter of a delivery to get his man! Henry stays over the stumps and he executes a pin-point yorker right at the base of the off-pole, Wanindu Hasaranga, expecting a short-pitched delivery, moves away to give himself some room, and ends up exposing all the pegs. He bends low and opens the bat face but misses to squeeze it. The ball goes on to rattle the stumps as the off-pole goes for a walk. A short brisk inning from Hasaranga comes to an end.

47.31

Slower on, short-pitched, on middle and off, Janith Liyanage flat bats it to long on for one.

47.26

SIX! AWAY SHE GOES FOR SIX! On a length around the pads, Janith Liyanage slogs this and gets plenty behind it. The ball flies over the fielder on the fence towards deep mid-wicket for six.

DRINKS! Well, call it a commentator's curse or something but Sri Lanka has just managed to break this 51-run stand for the eighth wicket. Just when it was getting a bit on the nerves of the Lankans, Eshan Malinga struck gold. All Sri Lanka need is two wickets now and the writing is pretty much on the wall. It is all about when and how they get rid of Mark Chapman. This southpaw has shown immense maturity and the way he has paced his inning, batting with a tailender shows he is in for a long rope. Can Chapman reach to his hundred? Or can the Lankans wrap it up quickly? Or is there still some resilience left in the Kiwi tail. Let's find out. Matt Henry can bat as well. He is in at number 10 for New Zealand.

Eshan bowls it on a good length and keeps the line of attack around off, Nathan Smith pokes at it as the ball zips through and nips away a shy bit. He gets an outside edge and the ball is pouched by Kusal Mendis safely behind the wickets. New Zealand are 8 wickets down now.

25.11

Good length around middle and leg, Mark Chapman flat bats this to mid on and runs one. Brings up the 50-run partnership between these two.

This 8th wicket stand has now matured to 49 runs, with Chapman doing all the heavy-lifting. Nathan Smith has provided a good hand from the other end as well. Also, this match draws a fascinating similarity to the 2022-23 New Zealand-India ODI. In that clash, India had set 349, and New Zealand found themselves at 131/6 while chasing with their top order blown away, much like today's 77/7 collapse. Back then, Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner mounted a remarkable 162-run stand, nearly clinching an improbable win before falling short by 12 runs. The match was gone, but the Kiwis showed tremendous fighting spirit and shrunk down the deficit. Bracewell made a striking 140 off just 78 balls while Santner partnered him well for 57. Today's batting collapse echoes that match, though without the dramatic recovery partnership. Although, there's a long way to go for New Zealand here, as they still need to climb a mountain. But as it is being mentioned repeatedly by the on-air commentators, it is still a good batting track and Sri Lanka have ceded their momentum in this series as we have seen. But as of now, Sri Lanka is still in the driver's seat with just three good balls away from a win.

OUT! HIGH UP IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! New Zealand fall from from disarray to disaster as Sri Lanka get their sixth wicket! A very well judged catch, just near the boundary fence and that sums up how brilliant the Sri Lankans have been in the fielding department in this game! Coming to the delivery, Janith Liyanage bustles from over the stumps and lands this on a fractionally fuller length, just around off. Michael Bracewell clears his front leg and swings hard at it. He tries to hit it a bit too hard and loses his shape in the process. Hence mistimes it aerially. It goes miles up in the air and hangs up for an eternity. The ball sails and descends towards the deep mid-wicket region where Kamindu Mendis settles under it. Locks his eyes on the ball and takes a sharp reverse cup catch at his chest height. IS IT ANOTHER PIECE OF BEAUTY FROM Asitha Fernando? Inswinging fuller one around the pads, Mark Chapman goes for the flick and misses. The bat thumps into the right shoe but the ball deflects off the front pad towards the left of Asitha Fernando on his follow-through. Asitha Fernando takes this and appeals thinking the batter had hit it. Charith Asalanka goes upstairs. The UltraEdge confirms no connection of the ball with the bat or gloves and the Ball Tracking confirms that it had pitched outside leg. Sri Lanka burn a review!

OUT! BOWLED'EM! THROUGH HIS DEFENCE! A corker of a delivery and you won't see many better inswinging yorkers bang on target than this. Asitha charges in from over the stumps and spears in a pinpoint yorker. Gets that lateral movement as the ball tails back in after pitching with Ravindra having no answer to it at all. He brings the bat in front to block but gets a bit late and the ball beats the bat and disturbs the timber. OUT! FLAT IN THE AIR AND GONE! The struggle ends for Will Young and the Lankans celebrate in unison as they get their first breakthrough. Theekshana dishes out a flatter and quicker one, around off, with the seam in an upright position. It is that conventional in-drifter tailing into the batter with some pace on it. Will Young is hurried and looks to nudge this away towards leg but gets a bit more than what he would have liked onto it. The ball chips straight into the safe hands of Avishka Fernando at short mid-wicket for a simple catch. New Zealand are struck early for 3/1.

For a fact, 340 is the highest successful run chase at this venue. It was executed by Australia against New Zealand back in 2007. And in this decade, in 2022, India successfully chased down 309 against New Zealand. So, it is doable if we go by the historical records. Also, an early spin is summoned by Asalanka. Maheesh Theekshana to operate from the far end.

On a length around middle and leg, Pathum Nissanka smashes this to long on and runs one this time.

Pathum Nissanka is really struggling to run singles here. And a pointed discussion between the on-air commentators, as they opine that Nissanka shouldn't be out batting if he cannot rotate strike. Especially keeping the upcoming Test series in mind, at home against Australia. He might be out there and try to go all guns blazing to retrieve that run rate back again for Sri Lanka.

On a length, around the pads, Pathum Nissanka almost clips this to mid-wicket but it lands short of the fielder.

Time for another hydration break! This has been a good little passage of play for the Kiwis as they have sneaked back in the contest with three quick wickets. The stand between Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis was looking threatening as the two had added 87 runs together and had paced their inning masterfully. However, the spinners cashed in using the conditions to their benefit and provided crucial breakthroughs. With Sri Lanka slipping down from 156/1 to 183/4, and both set batters back in the sheds, they will have to rebuild once again to post a challenging total. While for New Zealand, a couple of more wickets would effectively dash Sri Lanka from posting a high score. Here's Pathum Nissanka back to resume his batting again. He is 50 (31). It will be interesting to see how he bats now. Santner to continue after the break. He is 6-0-20-1 so far.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! WHAT A GREAT CATCH FROM MATT HENRY! Bracewell offers some flight on this one and pitches it around off, on a fuller length, Charith Asalanka clears his front foot and creates some room for himself. Goes through the line and hits it aerially and inside-out to clear the long off fence. Matt Henry though runs to his right and plucks the ball from the air by stretching his hands out. He shows great sharp awareness as he tosses the ball up before running into the fence with momentum. He balances himself, comes back into the field of play, and pouches it safely on the second attempt. The TV umpire is summoned to check for a fair catch and it is deemed as a clean catch. But, his injury has certainly slowed down the scoring rate after that. Mitchell Santner and Nathan Smith have effectively managed to stem the flow of runs to an extent and would like to further press on their opposition with a couple of quick wickets. OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Natham Smith strikes for New Zealand and provides that crucial breakthrough. He hurls it on a good length, and angles it on the pads, Avishka Fernando moves inside the line of the ball, and goes for the pull shot looking to take on Mark Chapman at the deep square leg fence. However, the ball isn't that short to execute that shot, hence, he doesn't time it well and the ball gets more elevation than distance and Mark Chapman does the rest by taking a regulation catch. Avishka Fernando's struggling innings comes to an end as he departs for 17 off 33 balls. Sri Lanka are 69/1.

Kusal Mendis walks out to bat now. Also, a change in bowling as Mitchell Santner comes into the attack, replacing Matt Henry.

It is also quite breezy out there, which might help the seamers to move the ball. Sri Lanka players take their fielding positions. Avishka Fernando and Pathum Nissanka are the two openers for Sri Lanka. Matt Henry has the new ball for New Zealand to kick off the proceedings. Off we go...

The captain of New Zealand, Mitchell Santner says it looks like a pretty good wicket. The captain of Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka says the surface looks good and they are hoping to get runs on the board. Mentions that the drop-in pitches can be a bit more bouncier as compared to the other tracks. Adds they want to deliver in this game and they also had a detailed discussion regarding the strategies for this game. Informs they are going unchanged.

TOSS UPDATE - The flip of the coin lands in the favor of Sri Lanka and Charith Asalanka elects to BAT first.

This final ODI carries significant weight beyond its immediate context. Sri Lanka desperately needs to build momentum heading into the upcoming Champions Trophy, while New Zealand could use this opportunity to test their bench strength and fine-tune their squad composition. Far from being a dead rubber, this contest holds real importance for both teams' preparations for the major tournament ahead in February. We'll be back shortly with updates on team selections and the all-important toss.

Sri Lanka's batting struggles have been the defining story of this series, failing to cross 200 in the opener before being dismissed for a mere 142 in the following game. The repeated collapse of their top order, with seasoned performers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis unable to make meaningful contributions, has left the team in disarray. Every time the openers have faltered, Sri Lanka has found themselves playing catch-up cricket, unable to build any meaningful momentum in their innings. Only young Kamindu Mendis has stood out as a lone warrior with the bat. Though Maheesh Theekshana claimed a memorable hat-trick, Sri Lanka's bowling attack has leaked runs, particularly their pace department. Heading into this final encounter, the visitors will be eager to put together a complete performance and end the series on a positive note.

New Zealand's batting prowess has been evident throughout the series, with Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman stepping up in the rain-shortened 37-over contest. While the middle order has shown promise, they'll be looking to convert promising starts into substantial scores to further strengthen the team's batting depth. The bowling department has been particularly impressive, with Matt Henry maintaining his excellent form and Jacob Duffy emerging as an exciting pace prospect. The pace trio, including William O'Rourke, has worked in perfect harmony to consistently trouble the Sri Lankan batters.

It is time for the final chapter in this intriguing series to unfold. On that note, we welcome you all from the Eden Park, Auckland, for what promises to be a captivating conclusion to this white-ball series. While New Zealand have already demonstrated their dominance with an unassailable 2-0 lead, they'll be hunting for a clean sweep to cap off their impressive campaign. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, though facing the prospect of a whitewash, will be determined to salvage pride with a victory in this final encounter.

... MATCH DAY ...

Sri Lanka's white-ball tour of New Zealand is nearing its conclusion and to finish things off, it is time for the 3rd and final ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Eden Park in Auckland. Hosts, New Zealand have already sealed the series and will have their eyes on a clean sweep whereas Sri Lanka will look to end on a high and with a crucial win before heading back home. Last time around in Hamilton it was a rain-marred contest that the Kiwis won quite easily batting first to go along with a successful run chase in the first game. In both games we have seen the Lankan batting line-up simply crumble under pressure and in the last game as well, it was just Kamindu Mendis who showed proper fight. Their bowling has been quite tidy and Maheesh Theekshana even picked up a hat-trick last time around but they need to step things up in the batting order. On the other hand, hosts New Zealand have enjoyed a couple of good overall performances as their bowling attack has come up with the goods in both matches and even the batting has clicked to an extent. Rachin Ravindra will once again be looking to make his mark and we might just see a change or two in the Kiwis' line-up given the series is already sealed. Will Sri Lanka be able to go back home on a positive note? Or will New Zealand brush them aside once again? We shall find out in due time.
