Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings by 32 runs

Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur

Right then, that is it from this huge game where Rajasthan gets the better of Chennai and get back to winning ways. However, the action in the Indian T20 League does not stop here as we have another exciting clash between Punjab and Lucknow on Friday, the 28th of April. The first ball will be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can join us early for all the build-up. Until then, goodbye and cheers!

Yashasvi Jaiswal is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his excellent inning. He says that the wind was playing a massive role and he had it in his mind but informs that he knew that he wanted to play good cricketing shots. Adds that he wanted to score freely in the Powerplay and get his team off to a good start. Mentions that he has been putting a lot of effort into training and says that he has been speaking to the coaching staff and many senior players. Claims that he feels the pressure but he wants to be there in such a situation and enjoys it. Ends by saying that he was not thinking about getting a hundred and just wanted to keep his strike rate high to get runs on the board as well as look for scoring options.

Sanju Samson, the victorious skipper of Rajasthan says that it was a good win and it was important for the team atmosphere and also for the fans. Adds that this is their first win in Jaipur and it feels great. Tells that they cannot be only a defending team and that depends on the conditions as in Chinnaswamy or Wankhede you will like to chase. Says that before the game looking at the conditions, he felt dew would not play a big role and that is why they wanted to bat. Mentions that he is delighted with the youngsters as they played good attacking cricket and the mindset was really good. Credits the team management and the support staff for the success. Ends by saying Yashasvi Jaiswal works very hard and he deserves all the good things.

Presentation Time...

Adam Zampa is up for a quick chat. He says they have been under the pump in the last few games but the boys did really well. Explains that he has been in and out of the team and got a few wickets so he is glad to help the team. Claims that he saw Maheesh Theekshana bowl with extra pace as well as shorter than usual and he decided to put it into the wicket and let the ball do its bit. Mentions that the young players have been great to watch especially the way they got them off to a flier and ended the innings as well. Ends by saying that he has been playing cricket for a long time and he aims to be mentally prepared, train hard and have a nice time while he is here.

MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai, says that the score was well above par and the reason for that was the first six overs but at the same time he feels that it was the best time for the batters. Mentions that they controlled the middle overs but conceded too much at the end and they did not start well in their first six overs. When asked about Matheesha Pathirana he says that they have to accept what is happening and not look at the scorecard. Adds that he sees what kind of deliveries are being bowled and not how many runs are coming off so he felt that Pathirana was bowling really well. Credits Yashasvi Jaiswal for his effort and says that he batted really well as he took calculated risks. Claims that they made it slightly easy as their bowlers didn’t assess the right lengths to bowl and gave away too many boundaries due to which they were playing catch up. Goes on to say that in the end, Dhruv Jurel batted really well too. Ends by saying that the crowd will be chasing him and this venue is close to his heart because he got his 183 here which gave a lifeline to his international career.

Earlier in the game, Rajasthan posted the highest total at this ground in the Indian T20 League courtesy of a brilliant inning from Yashasvi Jaiswal and a good contribution from Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal towards the death overs. Tushar Deshpande picked up a couple of wickets for Chennai while Maheesh Theekshana and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with one each.  While chasing, Chennai could not get to the start that they wanted and were on the back foot. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube played fighting knocks but without much support, and eventually, it proved to be too much for them as they tasted defeat.

Rajasthan, on the other hand, were hot and cold with their bowling effort. They started off well and came in with a plan to bowl straight to Devon Conway which worked for them. They went for a few after that but Adam Zampa and Ravichandran Ashwin pulled things back nicely in the middle overs and picked up five wickets among themselves. However, they let their foot off the gas and allowed Chennai to get back in the game. The pacers were expensive except for Sandeep Sharma who bowled a brilliant spell. They once again managed to pull things back and did well to close the game down in the end to get over the line with ease. Kuldip Yadav also did well considering this was his first game of the season.

Chennai did not get off to the ideal start as the openers were struggling to time the ball. Ruturaj Gaikwad did get his rhythm back and played some beautiful shots but Devon Conway struggled throughout and ate up 16 balls to score just 8 runs before getting out. Ajinkya Rahane also couldn't replicate his form and fell cheaply while Gaikwad holed out after a quickfire 47 off just 29 balls trying to up the ante. Ambati Rayudu came in as the Impact Player but went without making any as he did not trouble the scorers at all. However, after that Shivam Dube and Moeen Ali changed the momentum of the chase with a few good overs on the trot but unfortunately, Ali could not stick around for long and got dismissed after scoring 23 runs off just 12 balls. That did not affect Dube one bit as he continued to smash it all around the park and registered his third fifty in a row. Ravindra Jadeja also delivered a few lust blows but this was always going to be difficult for them and in the end, they fell short by 32 runs.

Rajasthan have marked their 200th Indian T20 League game with a fantastic win! They have done the double over Chennai and have gone top of the table due to their better net run-rate. It was a complete performance from the hosts as they were better in all three departments and in the end, it was quite comfortable for them.

We are back for the second essay as the umpires make their way out to the middle. The Rajasthan players are in a huddle at the boundary line as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway jog onto the field to open the innings for Chennai. The fielders are taking their respective positions on the field and the new ball has been handed to Sandeep Sharma who will begin proceedings. Kuldip Yadav is on the field as an Impact Player for Rajasthan in place of Shimron Hetmyer. We are all set. Let's go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, a massive total on the board, and if there is any team that could be expected to breach this target on current form, it would be this Chennai side. They will need a solid start from their in-form openers and will need to play their shots from the word go. Rajasthan will know that even without Trent Boult, they have enough firepower in their arsenal to restrict the visitors and pick up a crucial win. Will they be able to put up a good performance with the ball to complement their effort with the bat? Or will Chennai pull off a remarkable run chase by beating the record for the highest score on this venue on the very same day? We will find out shortly in the run chase.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is up for a quick chat. He says that it is a really good total and they will give their best to defend it. Adds that he is enjoying his batting and trying to play all his shots and feels good in his mind. Mentions that he talks to the senior players for information about the venues. Tells that he and Jos Buttler try to keep things simple and it is all about playing good shots to keep looking for boundaries. Ends by saying that the slower ones and the cutters were holding a bit but the new ball was coming onto the bat nicely.

Rajasthan got off the blocks in an explosive manner as they so often do when they bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal was at his fluent best right from the first ball as the hosts got 14 runs in the first over. The openers got 64 runs in the Powerplay and Jos Buttler surprisingly played the anchor role but perished in the quest to pump up his scoring rate. Sanju Samson looked to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard ticking but could not provide the impetus they needed as he was dismissed after a steady start. Yashasvi Jaiswal got to his highest T20 score accumulating 77 runs in 43 deliveries and had a century in sight but could not capitalize. Shimron Hetmyer could not play the role of the finisher but Dhruv Jurel did not disappoint as he struck 34 runs in 15 balls and Devdutt Padikkal played a handy cameo of 27 in 13 deliveries to push their team beyond the 200-run mark.

What a quality player Dhruv Jurel is turning out to be! He has pushed Rajasthan to a formidable total as they have put up the highest total on this ground in the history of the Indian T20 League. The first time 200 has been posted at this venue and the hosts will be confident of their chances in this game. Chennai’s opening bowlers were carted all around the ground in the first three overs till Maheesh Theekshana was brought into the attack and he helped bring some control in the Powerplay. They still remained wicketless till Ravindra Jadeja broke the opening partnership in the 9th over with 82 runs on the board. Tushar Deshpande turned the momentum back in Chennai’s favor with two wickets in one over and Maheesh Theekshana chipped in with one as the visitors controlled the middle overs. They could not finish well though as they conceded runs in the 49 runs in the last three overs.

We are all set to start! The two umpires make their way to the middle followed by tge Chennai players who spread out to take their respective field positions. Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the two openers for Rajasthan. Akash Singh has the new ball in his hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

MS Dhoni, the skipper of Chennai, says they would have bowled first as he expects the wicket to remain the same throughout the game. Mentions that there is a bit of grass cover and the wicket behaves differently sometimes and there is lower bounce so need the bowlers need to adapt. Claims that in tournaments like this, they look up to certain individuals to perform. Adds that when they are out there, they are alone and they can only build character which they try to do. Whatever happens after that does not matter and all they need to do is focus on the process. Informs that they have the same side.

Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan, says that they will bat first. Adds that the wicket looks good and they want to learn from the previous games so stick to their strengths which is defending. Mentions that it is a special moment for the team to play their 200th game. Tells that he feels great playing for Rajasthan for over 10 years. Ends by saying that he would have liked to see more pink in the crowd but it is more yellow and we all know the reason behind it. Informs that they have made one change as Trent Boult misses out due to a niggle and Adam Zampa comes in for him.

Impact Players for Rajasthan - Donovan Ferreira, Murugan Ashwin, Riyan Parag, KM Asif, Kuldip Yadav.

Rajasthan (Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson (C/WK), Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, Shimron Hetmyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jason Holder, Adam Zampa, Sandeep Sharma, Yuzvendra Chahal.

TOSS - The captains are out in the middle. The coin is flipped into the air and lands in favor of Rajasthan. They have elected to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Daren Ganga is pitchside. He says that Pitch 5 is being used and the square boundaries are equal but the straight one is a lot bigger. He is joined by Kevin Pietersen who informs that there is an even covering of grass on the pitch. Adds that the pacers may get some bounce but the batters will enjoy this wicket.

Chennai under the leadership of MS Dhoni personify professionalism as they are a team that over the years have produced a superior level of consistency. Despite being hit by an injury crisis that saw their side depleted even before the competition started, they have motored along like a well-oiled machine through this edition of the Indian T20 League. They have seen further injuries in the pace bowling department and that has made them turn to their uncapped Indian bowlers who have risen to the challenge with flying colors. It is their batting performance that has set the foundation for their success and with quality spinners in their side, they look difficult to defeat. Will they be able to exact revenge for their loss at home? Or will the hosts do a double over the current table-toppers? We will find out soon. Stay tuned for the toss and team updates.

Rajasthan looked like the side to beat when the competition began as they seem to be well-equipped in all aspects of the game. Their positive start this campaign confirmed the expectations of pundits and fans alike but recent results seemed to have exposed a weakness. They have been unable to chase down two achievable targets in their last two matches and for a side that possesses immense batting talent, they would feel extremely disappointed. With two in-form openers and a middle-order that has been among the runs when called upon, they will look to make things right in the second half of the tournament. They have good pace bowlers who can bowl with the new ball as well as in the death overs and possess two world-class spinners at their disposal. They will be eager to get a win under their belt and more so against their high-flying opponents.

Hello, and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our coverage of match number 37 in the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League as last year's finalist Rajasthan host four-time champions Chennai at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur in an enthralling encounter that sees two teams in the top half of the table lock horns against each other. Both teams are currently in contrasting veins of form as Rajasthan come into this game on the back of two defeats with their latest loss coming against Bangalore while on the other hand, Chennai are on a three-match winning streak having beaten Kolkata in their last encounter. However, when quality sides face each other, form goes out of the window and we expect this to be a fierce contest.

... MATCH DAY ...

We are now reaching a phase in the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League where certain teams will have an opportunity to stake their claim for the playoff spots while others will see their title hopes dwindle with each defeat. If there is anyone who could have confidently predicted all the results we have witnessed so far, that person needs to be worshipped as a soothsayer since we have had some highly unpredictable results and several tight finishes that have gone to the very last over. We arrive at a stage where teams will be hunting for consistency as a string of victories could propel most teams to the summit of the table. The spotlight is currently on match number 37 where Rajasthan play host to four-time champions Chennai at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur as we see two teams nestled in the top half of the table battle each other to consolidate their position. Rajasthan have already managed to beat their opponents from the south at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in a close encounter as Chennai fell short by 3 runs and the hosts will be eager to do a double over one of the most successful sides in the competition. Having started exceedingly well with four wins in five games, Rajasthan have lost their last two games and they have seen other teams climb past them on the table. They will need a massive turnaround of fortunes if they are to stem their slide and all their batters need to contribute to the cause. Jos Buttler is their leading run-getter with 244 runs and his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal not far behind with 227 runs in his kitty. They have a strong middle order comprising Sanju Samson (181 runs), Devdutt Padikkal (165 runs), and Shimron Hetmyer (189 runs) who has played the role of finisher on many occasions. Yuzvendra Chahal has 12 wickets this season and continues to prove why he is so highly rated in white-ball cricket. Ravichandran Ashwin has been economical with 9 wickets under his belt and Trent Boult has claimed the majority of his nine wickets in the Powerplay. Sandeep Sharma's introduction into the side has improved their death bowling as he has fulfilled the role well along with Jason Holder. Chennai have lost just 2 games so far and are currently on a three-game winning streak courtesy of their in-form batters. Devon Conway has been instrumental in their success so far having scored 4 consecutive half centuries and having accumulated 314 runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad started the tournament well but has fallen off slightly but still has 270 runs to show for his effort. Ajinkya Rahane has been a revelation for his side and has shown pure intent to be aggressive scoring 209 runs in the 5 games he has played so far at a strike rate of 199.04. Shivam Dube is yet another player who has flourished under the guidance of MS Dhoni as he has exhibited his ball-hitting prowess and with Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, and the skipper himself, they have a long batting line-up. Tushar Deshpande has provided a pleasant surprise to the visiting side, as he has led the young players in a depleted pace bowling unit from the front claiming 12 wickets. Akash Singh has proved to be handy when called upon and Matheesha Pathirana is filling some big boots with his slingy action along with pin-point yorkers. Ravindra Jadeja has 10 wickets to show for his efforts and forms a solid spin bowling contingent along with Moeen Ali and Maheesh Theekshana. This is a battle between two sides that have extremely strong players on paper and are well-rounded cricketing units so an encounter between them is bound to have all the twists and thrills to make this a cracker of a contest. Will Rajasthan manage to end their slump in front of the home crowd? Or will Chennai make it four wins in a row to consolidate their position on the table? We will find out soon.
