Right then! That's all from this game! Sri Lanka have taken the series 2-1 and go into the T20I series with a lot of confidence. South Africa, on the other hand, would be disappointed with this performance but they have some of the regular players back for the T20I series. The T20I series is set to begin on Friday, September 10th, 2021 at 8 pm local (2.30 pm GMT). Do join us then. Cheers and take care.

Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lankan skipper, says that it is really pleasing as they have won a series after a long time. Adds that they have played really good cricket this series. Goes onto say that toss played a major role and winning it made a really good impact on this match. Tells that he thought that 230 would have been an ideal score but 203 turned out to be a very good score. Says that Maheesh Theekshana proved to be a decisive bowler and he is a bright prospect for them going forward. States that he should have stayed there with the bat more. Says that he wanted to bat more lower and he really wanted to contribute.

Keshav Maharaj, the South African skipper, says that the bowlers did really well and the wicket was slow. Tells that the batting did not go to plan. Credits Sri Lanka for playing really well. States that the first Powerplay set them back. Goes onto say that if you look at the first two games, the batters were very positive but it did not work in this game. On the mindset for the T20Is, Maharaj admits that it is back to the drawing board but also asserts that they will get a few senior players back in the T20I series.

Charith Asalanka, the Man of the Series, says that he is glad to be the Man of the Series and he is very happy. Adds that he made a plan to take singles and he enjoyed it. Adds that he feels that he did the job for his team. States that they were looking for 230 to 240 but when Hasaranga and Shanaka got out, they looked at getting to 220.

Dushmantha Chameera, the Man of the Match, says that the wicket was a bit slow and he tried to bowl good lengths consistently. Adds that he had rough injuries past few years and he tried to get himself fit and he practiced well the last few months.

Stay tuned for the presentation ceremony!

South Africa never looked like chasing this total down! They kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Markram fell quickly while Hendricks and van der Dussen did not last long. Malan looked good till he was out there but he fell before rain stopped things for a while. There was no return from there as whoever came out to bat simply fell prey to the Sri Lankan bowlers. Overall, it was a pretty disappointing performance from the South African batsmen.

Sri Lanka rolled over South Africa pretty easily! They started brilliantly with the ball as Praveen Jayawickrama sent back Aiden Markram pretty early and then on a pitch which was not aiding the seamers, Dushmantha Chameera bowled beautifully and chipped in with two wickets. Then it was the debutant's show. Maheesh Theekshana simply bamboozled the batsmen with his mystery spin, taking 4 wickets. Hasaranga was brilliant as well while Charith Asalanka bowled well in his first over.

What a bowling performance and Sri Lanka have taken the series 2-1! The hosts have been absolutely brilliant and they also get some valuable points in the World Cup Super League. A simply sensational performance here and they deserve the series win. South Africa, on the other hand, crumbled and they will be disappointed with this performance.

Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The Sri Lankan players stride out to the middle, followed by Aiden Markram and Janneman Malan. Dushmantha Chameera will start with the ball for the hosts.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

What do we learn from the previous para? Of course, South Africa have a tendency to choke in tournament knockouts. (Remember, this is a series decider). Second, the second essay of that run chase saw Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag take 5 wickets in 13 overs. So it means that you need one set batsman to bat through. And spinners are never out of the game. So even though 204 could seem a smallish total, a spinning track could provide us a wonderful run chase. Please do stay tuned, folks.

Right then. South Africa have 204 to chase but it won't be an easy chase as the pitch will aid spinners. Sri Lanka will need their bowlers to step up and deliver. Flashback - 2002 Champions Trophy - Semifinal between South Africa and India at this very same ground. India made 261/9 in 50 overs, while the Proteas were 192/1 in 37 overs. Then, suddenly, Herschelle Gibbs suffered cramps in his hands and had to retire hurt. What followed next was harakiri. South Africa, needing 70 from 78 balls, with technically 9 wickets in hand, practically 8, lost their way, stumbling to 213/4 and eventually, lost by 10 runs.

One might argue - what is the sense in having Aiden Markram bowl, that too, ahead of Tabraiz Shamsi? Well, Maharaj just trusted his instincts and given that there was a right hand-left hand combination in the middle, with Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva batting, he thought of getting on an offie. That move did not quite work then but Markram did get a wicket later on. And then, Shamsi wove his magic again. Overall, these were the figures of all the spinners combined - 40-1-142-8. Poor Andile Phehlukwayo and Wiaan Mulder got just one over each, that too because there were lack of bowling options ar the death! That explains Mulder's frustration and fury in the 49th over.

South Africa will be pretty pleased with their performance. The bowlers, especially their spinners, were brilliant. How many times to do you see spin opening the innings? That too, from a non-Asian team? We saw that in this innings. Rabada bowled the first over but skipper Keshav Maharaj took the second new ball to himself. He has done it in domestic games for the Dolphins, back in South Africa, when they play on slow pitches in Durban. And he read the pitch to perfection. He struck in his very second over, removing Avishka Fernando and then, realizing that the deck is supporting spinners, got George Linde from the other end. And got rewarded quickly enough. His reading of the game was equally impressive as he overturned two of the on-field umpire's calls to get wickets in his team's favour.

The top order failed to score runs as each of them fell below 20. Avishka Fernando and Dinesh Chandimal both fell to LBW while Mendis's struggle came to end as he chipped one back to Linde. Dhananjaya de Silva put on some resistance alongside Asalanka but eventually perished against Markram. After that, the wickets kept tumbling for Sri Lanka. Asalanka stayed solid in the middle and worked hard for his 47 but he also departed. Chameera played a useful hand of 29 but none of the batters really managed to get going and in the end, SL managed to put 203 on the board.

Eight out of the nine wickets fell to spin and this gives a clear indication about how the pitch is moving and South Africa have done well to exploit the conditions. Dushmantha Chameera and Maheesh Theekshana added 32 runs for the 9th wicket and that helped Sri Lanka cross the 200-run mark and have something to defend with their spinners.

Full on off, Theekshana heaves it to long on. He takes the single but Jayawickrama calls him for the second. The throw comes in to the keeper who behaves casually, as if the throw is not coming to him and then, at the last moment, collects the ball and whips the bails off and appeals for a run out, ala MS Dhoni style. But the square leg umpire is pretty sure that Theekshana has made it in, so it will be two runs to the total. SRI LANKA END ON 203 FOR 9.

BACK IN YOUR CREASE! Oh my, aggression from Mulder. Full on middle, Theekshana plays it back to the bowler. Now, he comes out of the crease in his followthrough but by no means, was he attempting the run. But Mulder picked the ball up and fired a throw back at the striker's end. Poor Theekshana had to rush back into his crease and perhaps the ball hit his back leg, while going through to Heinrich Klaasen. Now, Theekshana seemed to be giving a stare back at Mulder who was going off but then, when he saw the batter giving him a stare, decided to stare back. However, he then received a smile from Theekshana and the matter ended there. Could have been something different if Maheesh had decided to persist with his stare, aye?

48.50

On a length outside off, Theekshana looks to defend but misses.

WIDE! Good-length ball down the leg side, Theekshana looks to flick but misses. Wided.

48.41

Full on off, Jayawickrama closes the face of the bat early and it goes off the leading edge to deep cover for one.

48.30

Full on off, Jayawickrama looks to defend but it goes off the leading edge to cover where it falls short.

Praveen Jayawickrama is the last batsman to walk out.

48.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Struck firmly but straight to the fielder! Good-length ball on middle, Chameera smacks it but does not get the distance on it. It goes straight to Janneman Malan at deep square leg who takes it.

NOT OUT! Wickets missing! Nervous moment for Andile but what a review. That looked dead, if it was not bat. Flatter ball on middle, Phehlukwayo looked to defend with the bat behind his pad and was hit. Now, to the naked eye, it seemed like it hit the bat. But Sri Lanka put up an appeal for LBW and the finger went up. Phehlukwayo took the review after thinking for a while. The first thing the third umpire checks is whether there was an inside edge. The first replay shows that the ball hit the pad, then the bat and later, rolled to the on side. From that angle, it did seem like the angle will take the ball down the leg side, as Theekshana was bowling it from around the wicket. Then came the Ball Tracker which showed that it will miss the stumps, going down the leg side! Linde has to be credited for saving his partner here as he insisted on taking the review.

South Africa have taken a referral for an LBW. Was there any bat on it? Didn't look like. UltraEdge confirms the same showing no spike. Ball Tracker shows wickets missing! The on-field decision will be overturned.

We are ready to resume after a short delay! Fortunately, no overs have been lost. The Sri Lankan fielders disperse out in the middle. Wiaan Mulder and Heinrich Klaasen walk out as well. Maheesh Theekshana to complete his over.

Update 7.50 pm (2.20 pm GMT) - Yipppeee! Great news. We are hearing from the middle is that the covers are completely off and the play should begin at 8 pm local (2.30 pm GMT)!

Update 7.20 pm (1.50 pm GMT) - Hmmm... this was coming. HD Ackermann mentioned on air that just before the start of the 9th over, he was seeing groundstaff near the covers, making some movement. He did not reckon that it will rain but if the Lankan groundstaff get a bit impatient, rain is around the corner. And it did arrive. It began as a light drizzle, which is why the umpires did not take the players off immediately. But just as Wiaan Mulder looked to take guard, the drizzle got heavier and covers were called upon. It has gotten heavier now and this might be a lengthy delay. Fingers crossed.

Wiaan Mulder walks in at number 6, replacing Janneman Malan. It is drizzling slightly, but the umpires have chosen to go on with the game.

9.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! It is a catch and Malan goes! Theekshana strikes off his first delivery in international cricket. What a moment for him and he will be very happy. Tossed up outside off, Malan looks to drive but it goes off the outside edge to first slip where Dhananjaya de Silva takes the catch. Let's stop here for a moment and describe this in two different parts. First part. Is it a catch? Sri Lanka are celebrating. But Malan is going nowhere. He stands there, thinking that the ball has hit the ground and then gone to the fielder. The two umpires converge and then raise it upstairs, with the soft signal as OUT. Here comes the replay. Pretty straightforward. The bat has hit the ground and the ball has gone off the outside edge. Pretty sure, Malan would have felt the bat hitting the ground as a bump ball, hence, wanted confirmation. Now, the second part. How good a catch was that from Mr. Dhananjaya de Silva? Very, very, very. Magnificently brilliant. We are running short of adjectives. Yes, it was a spinner. Yes, the ball does come slowly as compared to that of a fast bowler. But this one, just flew right at his face. De Silva just showed his reflex action and at the right moment, got his hands in front of his face and the ball went right into those buckets. My word, that is simply sensational. Congratulations, Theekshana, but please honour Dhananjaya for that ripper of a catch.

GONE! Caught! No? Well, Sri Lanka are celebrating. But Janneman Malan is not leaving the crease as he thinks it's a bump ball. The umpires get together and refer this upstairs. The soft signal is out. Well, the replay clearly shows that it was the bat that had hit the ground and not the ball. The third umpire confirms the same showing OUT on the big screen.

Change from both ends! Maheesh Theekshana comes into the attack. He replaces Praveen Jayawickrama.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Ho ho ho! Appeal for something, get something else, they say! Not quite sure if the Proteas themselves knew this was out caught. It was a fuller ball, outside off, Charith Asalanka lunged to defend and the ball whizzed past the outside edge. Heinrich Klaasen collected the ball cleanly and whipped the bails off in a flash, and was celebrating the stumping, clearly. He was looking at Asalanka's back foot and then, at the square leg umpire. So clearly, he did not feel that there might have been a nick. The square leg umpire took it upstairs but as is the norm these days, the third umpire checks for everything. So first, the no ball, which is fine. Then, the outside edge. Oh wait. Now, when the ball passes the bat, there is a murmur. It is almost neglectable, but the third umpire seems interested. He checks that to and fro and eventually, is convinced that there was an edge! We don't even get to see whether the foot was dragged out of the crease. End of a fighting knock from Asalanka.

A stumping appeal has been sent upstairs. Heinrich Klaasen and Tabraiz Shamsi seem to be pretty confident. Replay shows there was rather an edge as UltraEdge catches a spike. Charith Asalanka will have to depart.

Keshav Maharaj, the South African skipper, is up for a chat. He says that it is hot and humid here so they need to save their energy. Informs that they are unchanged.

We are set to begin! South Africa players make their way in the middle. Avishka Fernando and Dinesh Chandimal are the openers for Sri Lanka. Kagiso Rabada to start the proceedings with the ball.

Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lankan skipper, says that they will bat first. Mentions that hopefully they win this match as the wicket looks good. Informs that their bowling is more important as they didn't bowl well in the last game. Adds that they have made three changes.

Pitch report - Aamir Sohail says the pitch looks hard and well rolled. Mentions that the ball will come onto the bat. Informs that spinners will get assistance from the pitch and they will get turn. Tells that the batters will have to play the spinners well.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Avishka Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal (WK) (IN PLACE OF MINOD BHANUKA), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka (C), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Kamindu Mendis (IN PLACE OF AKILA DANANJAYA), Praveen Jayawickrama, Maheesh Theekshana (IN PLACE OF BHANUKA RAJAPAKSA) (ODI DEBUT).

South Africa (Unchanged Playing XI) - Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen (WK), Andile Phehlukwayo, Wiaan Mulder, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj (C), Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi.

Toss - Sri Lanka have won the toss and they have elected to bat first.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, would be disappointed with their performance in the second ODI. They do not have a good record in series deciders in the last 7 years and they would want to change that fact in this game. They did well in the first ODI before being hammered in the second game and this is a game which both teams will be looking forward to as it is the decider. Who will come out on top?

South Africa made a strong comeback in the second ODI and lived to fight despite the absence from their ranks of Quinton de Kock, David Miller, and Lungi Ngidi and also without their skipper, Temba Bavuma who had his thumb broken in the first ODI. They face yet another challenge coming into the final ODI as Rabada is a doubt for the match and if he is declared unfit, it will be interesting to see who will replace him.

Hello and welcome to the third and final ODI between Sri Lanka and South Africa. The hosts won the first ODI by 14 runs and then the Proteas stormed back in the second ODI and hammered the Lankan side to level the series 1-1. And here we are, on the cusp of another decider.
