Presentation time...

Earlier in the game, the partnership between Rassie van der Dussen and Markarm helped South Africa put a mammoth total on the board. Rassie van der Dussen scored a century hile Markram and Malan notched up their fifties. England bowled well in the death with their slower deliveries but were below par in the rest of the innings. South African bowlers used the same ploy that England used in the death and in end it proved too much for the English batters on this slow and low pitch.

South Africa, on the other hand, were just brilliant in this game. They had their plans ready with the ball after seeing how the pitch behaved in the first half and though they got their first wicket in the 19th over, they never really let the game drift away from them. Once they got the first breakthrough which was provided by the skipper Keshav Maharaj, they made sure that they keep the pressure on. Markram turned out to be a man with the golden arm as he got two big wickets and all other bowlers then chipped in with some tight bowling. Nortje bowled with good heat and got three wickets in one over that sealed the deal for the Proteas in the end.

The target was a stiff one for England but given the firepower England have in their ranks, they would have fancied chasing down this total. However, the pitch was a tricky one and England openers started off cautiously and managed to put together a stand of 102-run. However, once that partnership was broken, England continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and the required rate started creeping up. Root held one end up and also scored at a brisk rate but with over 10 runs an over needed in the last 15 overs, they needed the likes of Livingstone and Moeen Ali to step up but it was not the case today and despite a fine knock of 86 from 77 balls from Root and a fifty from Bairstow, England have fallen well short of the target.

South Africa have registered a comprehensive win over the more-fancied English unit here at Chester-Le-Street. They were on the mark with their execution with both bat and ball while England just could not match up the execution level and the intensity of the Proteas in this game. This was a special game for England as one of their greatest all-rounders was playing his last game in this format but sadly they have not been able to give him a fitting farewell.

Commentary

The chase is set to begin. Keshav Maharaj leads his side on the field. Followed by Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow who walk out to open for England. It will be Keshav Maharaj who will start with the new ball. Here we go...

... The Run Chase ...

England were listless with the ball. There was no pace on offer and the seamers had to toil on a sunny day. The bowlers were never able to dominate the proceedings they leaked apleanty and would be very disappointed with their effort overall. Liam Livingstone picked up two wicket in an over to send back the two set-batters in Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram, who could've hurt them a lot towards the end. It looks to be like a good pitch to bat on with not much assistance to the bowlers. The onus is now on the England batters to start on the right foot and aim to build partnerships in the middle. It won't be an easy task. Do join us for the chase on the other side.

What an incredible innings this was from the Proteas. The visting side never looked to be in any kind of trouble. The batters were focused on building big stands and eventually set a solid platform for their middle order to go beserk in the death. Quinton de Kock departed after a brisk start, but it did not bother the visitors at all. Janneman Malan and Rassie van der Dussen took their time and stitched a solid stand of over 100 runs. Although, Malan racked up his half-century but could not convert it into a three-digit score like Rassie van der Dussen. However, Markram and van der Dussen later recorded the highest third-wicket partnership in ODIs at Durham with their stand of 151 runs. It was this pair who got them closer to the 300-run mark. Later, Miller took them over 330.

England did well in the fag end of the innings to keep the runs in control with their strategy of bowling off-pace deliveries. Nonetheless, it will be South Africa who will be the happier side heading into the break after setting a mammoth total on the scoreboard. It is their best score against England in England.

Drinks break. It has been a cautious start from the English openers but they have done well to not give their wicket away.

Drinks break! South Africa have started off brilliantly with the blade. There is hardly any pace on offer for the bowlers here. The England bowlers have hardly troubled the batters early on. Nonetheless, they have sent back a threat in Quinton de Kock and would be aiming to pick wickets at regular intervals to hurt the opposition. Ben Stokes comes into the attack to find that inspiration.

We are all set to begin! It's an emotional day at Chester-Le-Street, one of the greatest English all-rounder Ben Stokes will be taking the field one last time in this format. He along with all English players are out there in the middle now. Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock are the openers for South Africa. Sam Curran will take the new ball for England. Two slips in place. Here we go...

England (Playing XI) - Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (C) (WK), Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts (On debut).

South Africa (Playing XI) - Janneman Malan, Quinton de Kock (WK), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj (C), Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi.

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in favour of Keshav Maharaj. South Africa have elected to BAT first.

The Proteas, on the other hand, would also be itching to get things rolling and start off this tour with a positive result. They are missing their regular skipper Temba Bavuma but have enough quality to put a strong performance here. There is depth in both batting and bowling departments and this series overall is a good opportunity for both these teams to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the World Cup next year. Will we see Ben Stokes unleashing all his might one final time in the ODI format? Or will South Africa spoil the English party? Toss and team news in a bit.
