Sri Lanka beat Australia by 4 runs

R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo

That's a wrap to this close game. Sri Lanka have an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series now and that makes the final ODI a dead rubber. An inconsequential game after so long as this series is not a part of the 2020-23 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League. Australia though will look to win the last game and take some momentum into the Test series. Do join us on Friday, 24th June 2022, for all the action, starting at 2.30 pm IST (9 am GMT). You can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!

Dasun Shanaka, the victorious captain of Sri Lanka, starts by talking about the last over and feels it was the right idea for him to bowl. Adds that he was very confident about the total they put on the board. Calls that it's unfortunate that they didn't do well at the death. States that this win is much-needed for the country and will be celebrated by all the Sri Lankans.

Aaron Finch, the captain of Australia, says that the series has gone the same way the previous few games have. Mentions that any time they looked like getting a big partnership, they lost a wicket. Tells that they know how hard it is to start in these conditions against good spin. Finch feels that the target was very gettable and they got very close. Mentions that in a couple of chases, they had the game in hand, but lost wickets at the wrong time. States that had someone batted a little longer with Warner, the result could have been different.

Charith Asalanka (110) is chosen for the Player of the Match award. Says that it was a strong challenge and credits Dhananjaya de Silva for his knock that allowed Charith to settle down. Shares that the pitch was similar to the last game but it spun more later in the game. Mentions that the plan was to bat till the 40th over and then go for the big hits, and they were targeting 250 runs.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

Earlier in the afternoon, Australia opted to bowl and picked three wickets in Powerplay 1. But they lost the plot in the middle overs and the knocks from Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka stole the momentum. The Aussies did manage to come back at the death and bundle the Lankans out in 49 overs for a below-par total but their batting imploded and they failed to keep the series alive.

The chase for Australia started on the wrong note with Aaron Finch falling very early. David Warner though got his head down and concentrated on building partnerships. With Mitchell Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey and Travis Head, Warner kept on stitching stands and maintained a nice tempo in the chase. Australia looked like firm favourites at one stage but Sri Lanka made a resounding comeback by dismissing Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell and David Warner in the space of 9 balls to throw this match wide open. Pat Cummins and Cameron Green tried to wrestle some control back through their stand, as the asking rate was not very demanding, but Sri Lanka struck back to remove them and registered a close win.

It was the David Warner show for Australia in the chase. The Australians are criticised for being clueless against the spinners but on a pitch conducive for spin bowling and against an army of spin bowlers, the Aussies applied themselves, showed fine skills and temperament, and navigated through the challenging period with aplomb. Warner mixed caution with aggression, dealt with the spinners with excellent footwork, played and missed many times, but stayed focused to do the job. His presence never allowed the required rate to creep up, and Sri Lanka spent most of the time on the back foot. But just when it looked like Australia will overcome the trial by spin, things went awry for them.

Well tried, Matthew Kuhnemann! He didn't throw in the towel and gave a real scare to Sri Lanka. This match appeared done once the final over started but Kuhnemann fetched a couple of boundaries to make things interesting. Eventually, the Lankan skipper held his nerve and the hosts won the series, their first bilateral ODI series win against Australia since 2010, with a game to go.

OUT! CAUGHT! Sri Lanka win the match by 4 runs and clinch the series with one game to go. Finally, Dasun Shanaka takes the pace off the ball and lands it around middle and off, Matthew Kuhnemann steps back to make room and lofts it unconvincingly to extra cover. Charith Asalanka, the centurion of this match, gets under it and fittingly ends the game. The Lankan players are ecstatic.

There is a mini-conference. Dasun Shanaka is surrounded by the other senior players. Wanindu Hasaranga perhaps is asking him to stay calm.

Pat Cummins takes the DRS but is not looking too confident. The UltraEdge finds no bat. The Ball Tracking confirms that it's hitting the leg stump. The crowd roars and this is the final nail in the Australian coffin. That was the plan from Lasith Malinga, to bowl the yorker and Chamika lands one to get rid of Australia's last hope.

He is thudded on the pads, they appeal but the umpire shakes his head. A late decision to take the referral. No one is looking convinced though. Ball Tracking shows that it's pitching marginally outside leg. Wanindu Hasaranga is done with his spell.

Review! Dasun Shanaka opts for the review for lbw. The original decision is not out. The UltraEdge confirms that it is pad first. The Ball Tracking shows that the ball is pitching outside leg. Matthew Kuhnemann survives and Sri Lanka lose a review here.

OUT! STUMPED! Warner is gone on 99 and Sri Lanka are right on top! They have made a resounding comeback in this match. Dhananjaya flights this one around off, turning away, Warner gets forward with a big stretch and tries to drive but is beaten by the away turn. Dickwella is swift in taking the bails off and starts to celebrate. The square leg umpire refers upstairs. Nothing on the UltraEdge and the side-on angle confirms that Warner is outside the crease. Warner has already walked. Body blow to Australia. 67 needed off 77 balls with three wickets left.

Is that stumped? The umpire takes it upstairs to confirm. The UltraEdge shows no bat is involved. The side-on angle shows the stumps are broken when David Warner's back leg is in the air. He has to depart on 99. Australia now in a spot of bother.

We are back for the chase. Australia need 259 runs to level the series. The Sri Lankan players take the field, followed by Aaron Finch and David Warner who walk out to open for Australia. Chamika Karunaratne to start with the ball. Here we go...

... The Run Chase ...

Australia were off to a flying start with the ball! Their seamers were on the money and Maxwell operated really well to trouble the batters upfront. They had three wickets inside Powerplay 1. Although, the Aussies lost the plot in the middle overs. It looked like the game was going away from them but Mitchell Marsh came back into the attack and broke the fourth wicket stand. Later, Australia added pressure but Charith Asalanka had other plans. Eventually, Australia roared back in the death overs to go into the break with the momentum on their side. Marsh, Pat Cummins and Matthew Kuhnemann were the most successful bowlers for the visitors, claiming two wickets apiece. The onus now is on their batters to chase this target down and level the series. Will they be able to do so? We shall find out soon. Do join us for the second essay shortly.

It was a commendable effort by the Sri Lankan batters after the kind of start they had! They lost three wickets in quick succession and their top order had failed to lay down a solid foundation for their side. The century stand between Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka brought them right on the track but when it was time to go beserk, Dhananjaya de Silva was dismissed via an exceptional catch by Glenn Maxwell. That allowed the Aussies to squeeze the flow of runs and they did so really well, although Asalanka kept his cool and continued on his merry way. He got really good support from the lower-middle order and racked up his maiden ODI century. Certainly, a knock that managed to keep his side a bit ahead in the game but his departure towards the end cost his team a strong finish.

A great effort in the final few overs by Australia and they have restricted Sri Lanka to 258 runs which can be considered to be par at this venue. Sri Lanka would be a tad disappointed as they could not close the innings on a high.

OUT! What was Maheesh trying to do? It's a brain fade for the number 11, not reading the game situation. In fact, Wanindu was on his crouches before this ball, that signal was enough to suggest that he won't be taking any run. Anyway, coming to the delivery, it's on a length and outside off, Maheesh Theekshana slices his drive to the right of backward point and comes down the track in search of a run, and is also ball-watching. Wanindu stands there in disgust and gestures for him to run back. Maheesh Theekshana does that and puts in a dive also but before that Mitchell Swepson (sub) has scored a direct hit at the striker's end to find Maheesh short of the crease. The third umpire finds the same. Sri Lanka are all out for 258 runs and have wasted six precious balls.

IS THAT A BUMP BALL? Pat Cummins fires it across, very full and outside off, Charith Asalanka tries to squeeze it out and it goes straight into the hands of the point fielder. The Aussie fielders appeal and the two umpires get together. They refer it upstairs and the soft signal is not out. The replays find that it has certainly gone on the bounce to the fielder.

It brushes his thigh pad, clips a bit of the leg stump and goes to the keeper. The bowler gets excited but the bail has not come off.

OUT! STUMPED! Niroshan Dickwella yorks himself in the end and Alex Carey manages to hold on to the ball and clip the bails before Niroshan Dickwella could make a move back. Early success for Australia here. Coming to the delivery, it is looped up, around middle and leg. Niroshan Dickwella uses his feet but misjudges the delivery, as it sneaks past his blade and through his legs. Alex Carey fumbles a bit as there is some extra bounce but recovers well to dislodge the bails in time. There is a slight delay, as the umpires check for a caught behind but there is no spike on the UltraEdge. Also, there was a thought from the on-air commentator that maybe Alex Carey had collected the ball ahead of the stumps. That also comes to be false in the replays. Slight delay as they followed the protocol but we are ready to get underway again.

1.1 0

Angles it in, full and on off. Dickwella plays it back to the bowler.

Will Aaron Finch opt for a spinner from the other end? Yup, it's going to be Glenn Maxwell.

Niroshan Dickwella and Sri Lanka are off the mark instantly. Hazlewood dishes a length ball, outside off. Niroshan Dickwella taps it to mid off for a quick single. It is an electrifying atmosphere even without a huge crowd.

Right then, we are ready to get underway. The Aussies have arrived on the field and they are followed by Pathum Nissanka and Niroshan Dickwella. It's going to be Josh Hazlewood to bowl the first over. Here we go...

Dasun Shanaka, the skipper of Sri Lanka, says that they have really worked in the batting department and it is having a good impact on the side. Mentions they have given two outstanding performances and hopes to find some inspiration in the field and continue with the momentum. Ends by saying there is a single change, as Wanindu Hasaranga comes in for Dushmantha Chameera.

Aaron Finch, the captain of Australia, says that he is bowling first as there was dew last time around and it gets better to chase in the evening. Informs that there is one change, Pat Cummins comes in for Jhye Richardson. Mentions that he is backing his all-rounders to do the job.

Pitch report - Russel Arnold is near the playing area and informs that the same pitch is to be used again. Adds that the surface is dry and there is hardly any grass. Tells that it will be slow and it will turn. Feels that 260 is par here but dew could be a factor.

Clearly, Sri Lanka are expecting this pitch to offer assistance to the spinners, hence, they have four frontline spinners in their XI. Dasun Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne are the two seamers. For Australia, they have gone with just one genuine spinner in Matthew Kuhnemann. The batting depth remains the same. Given the combination opted by the two teams, Australia will be delighted to win the toss and bowl. Dew was a factor in the last match and if it sets in again, Sri Lanka will face tough times with four tweakers slated to bowl.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Niroshan Dickwella (WK), Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (C), Chamika Karunaratne, Dunith Wellalage, Wanindu Hasaranga (In for Dushmantha Chameera), Jeffrey Vandersay, Maheesh Theekshana.

Australia (Playing XI) - David Warner, Aaron Finch (C), Mitchell Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey (WK), Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Pat Cummins (In for Jhye Richardson), Matthew Kuhnemann, Josh Hazlewood.

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in favour of Aaron Finch. AUSTRALIA ELECT TO FIELD!

Australia's journey hasn't been an easy one as they were hit with several injuries, which never allowed them to settle down with a fixed playing XI. Also, their spin department is looking all over the place in the absence of Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar. Australia though have got enough talented players in their ranks who can take the game on its head and put up a stern challenge. For Sri Lanka, their batters have found it easier to score against an inexperienced bowling line-up of Australia and would hope to continue on their merry way. Also, credit to their spinners who have played a major role in their recent success. It is all to play for then. Stay tuned for the toss and updates from both teams.
