West Indies beat India by 5 wickets

Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts

Right then, that is all we have from this thrilling encounter! The series is levelled at 1-1 and in a quick turnaround, the third T20I will be played on the same ground on Tuesday, 2nd of August. It will start at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT). Our build-up though begins a lot earlier. So do join us for the same. Till then, goodbye and cheers!

Nicholas Pooran, the skipper of West Indies says that it was very pleasing win and he can finally breathe now. He says there have been a couple of close games which they lost but it feels good to be on the winning side this time. He praises Obed McCoy along with other bowlers and says that they did a wonderful job restricting India to a below par score. He says the batters gave a really good start but in the middle they lost their way a bit, nevertheless a win is a win. He tells that it did not work for him and Hetmyer today but they want to continue taking the responsibility. He also praised King for the way he batted and says that he should learn from this game and finish games off in the future. He tells Thomas returned from an injury and managed to put up a nice performance on his home ground. He ends by saying that Obed McCoy is a bit of a freak and they need to deal with it but it is lovely to have him in the team as he gives them a left-arm option as well.

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of India is in for a chat. He starts by saying they did not get enough runs on the board. He says they will try to learn from the mistakes they made in this game and hopefully they will come back stronger. On giving the final over to Avesh Khan, he says that it is important to put them into tough situations and give them a feel of how it is to bowl under pressure for India. These young bowlers have done it in the Indian T20 League but this is a different ball game. Also adds that with these performances, they shouldn't let themselves down. Mentions they shouldn't panic after losing a game.

Obed McCoy is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his incredible bowling performance. He starts by thanking God and says that he has been doing this for his mom who is sick and that keeps him motivated. He says that getting wickets in the powerplay was key. He adds that in the previous match he was overthinking and he improved that in this game which helped him to execute his plans. He ends by saying he is thankful for all the experiences and challenges.

Presentation time.

Earlier in the game, India struggled with the bat after Pooran decided to bowl first on a tricky pitch. Obed McCoy was the star for the Windies as he took a six-fer and that gave Windies a great chance coming into the second half. It turned out to a quite a thrilling chase in the end and it was West Indies who managed to get the better of India on the day.

Indian bowlers should be credited for taking the game to the final over. They were defending a very modest total and needed early wickets but sadly it was not the case in this game. However, Pandya bowled brilliantly in the middle overs along with the spinners and that kept India in the game. Avesh Khan got an important wicket of King in the 16th over and Arshdeep Singh once again showed why he is rated so highly as he gave away just 6 runs in the 19th over and got a big wicket of Powell. Avesh Khan was trusted in the final over by the skipper over Bhuvneshwar Kumar but unfortunately for him, things did not go according to the plan for the youngster.

West Indies were chasing a below-par total and they got off to a perfect start with the bat as well as the Windies openers went onto score 46 runs in the Powerplay. Mayers departed just after the Powerplay but Pooran and King steadied the ship and West Indies were at one stage motoring along nicely towards a comfortable victory. However, Pooran departed in the 10th over and Hetmyer too could not last long. West Indies still were in a comfortable position with just 38 needed off 30 balls and seven wickets in hand. The wicket of King brought some panic in the Windies dressing room and it came to the situation where the Windies needed 10 off the last over and Thomas came to the rescue and finished the game for the Windies after some nervy moments in the final few overs.

WEST INDIES PULL OFF A LAST-OVER THRILLER! Spare a thought for Avesh Khan. He started the over defending 9 but perhaps on the very first ball itself, sealed the fate. Yes, Thomas did hit a six and a four but had that first ball not been a no ball, maybe, this game could have had a different or a longer finish. Anyways, West Indies have levelled the series but they nearly made a mess of it in the death overs. However, they have managed to cross the line in the end and this sets us up nicely for the remaining three games of this series.

19.2 4

FOUR! Devon Thomas gets the winning runs with a fine boundary. It is a length ball, outside off. Devon Thomas cuts it through point for four. WEST INDIES WIN THE GAME BY 5 WICKETS.

SIX! BOOM! Devon Thomas is making a solid statement with the blade here! It is a short ball, outside off. Devon Thomas stands tall and smokes it over the wide long off fence for a maximum. Devon Thomas makes the most of the Free Hit here.

19.1 nb 2

A low full toss, on off. Smith hits it hard to long off. The batters take one. Oh, no! The umpire signals a no ball as the bowler oversteps. Free Hit to follow.

Avesh Khan will bowl the final over! This is quite surprising, Rohit Sharma has opted for Avesh Khan over Bhuvneshwar Kumar! Maybe, he wants to put the youngster in the tough situation ahead of the World Cup and want to see how he responds.

Rishabh Pant takes the catch and appeals for it but the umpires are not sure about it. They take it upstairs to see if the catch is clean or not. The soft signal is not out. The UltraEdge shows that there is clear bat involved but the replay shows the ball bouncing in front of Pant before he pouches it. So, the on field decision remains.

Is that out? India have appealed for a caught behind. The umpire though wants to check whether the catch is taken cleanly or not? The soft signal is NOT OUT! The replays roll in and first they check for the UltraEdge and there is a clear spike, he has nicked this. So the question now is whether Pant took that cleanly? The answer is NO! FOUR! West Indies and Brandon King are underway in style! Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowls it short and outside off. King cuts it firmly past the diving fielder at cover-point for a boundary.

We are back for the chase. The Indian players stride out to the middle. Followed by Brandon King and Kyle Mayers who walk out to open for West Indies. Bhuvneshwar Kumar to start with the new ball. Here we go...

... The Run Chase ...

Obed McCoy is in for a quick chat. He says that it is a great feeling and he is working hard and to perform against a top-side like India is very special. Tells that he has plans and he tries to bowl according to the situation of the game and tells that short boundaries can be intimidating but he just tries to stick to the execution in the middle. Talks about his last wicket and says that he did not hear anything but when other players went up he thought that it is out. Says that it is a special felling to take six wickets.

This was a much better and a collective performance from West Indies. Their bowlers stuck to the plan of using the surface well with the new ball and got off to a solid start with Obed sending back the Indian skipper on the very first delivery. They did manage to capitalize on their dream start and bagged 4 wickets in 7 overs. Later, they managed to keep the run flow in check and did not allow the Indian batters to take the game away from them. Obed McCoy stood out with the ball with his six-wicket haul. Except Odean Smith, everyone was able to get on the wicket's column. Right then, the onus now is on the West Indian batters to chase down this par target and level the series. Will they be able to do that? Stick around to find out how things pan out.

No matter what the combination India goes with, their approach is going to be lethal. India stuck to their plan but their openers could not lay down a solid foundation up top. This did have an effect on their game plan. Only Hardik Pandya was able to get into his 30s and India would be very disappointed with their effort with the blade. The surface has a lot in it for the pacers and India would be hoping to make the most of the conditions as they have added an extra pacer in their squad compared to the first match.

A top-class performance by West Indies. Indian batters were never allowed to settle at the crease and haven't been able to put up a competitive total on the board. This is the lowest ever total by India in the first innings of a T20I game in West Indies.

We are all set to begin! The West Indies players are in the huddle. They disperse now to take their respective positions. Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav are the openers for India. So, India sticking with SKY at the top of the order but he has come out wearing Arshdeep Singh's T-shirt out in the middle. Remember, the reason for the delay? Anyway, the West Indies players now take the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement while the Indian players keep their hand on the heart in support of the movement. It will be Obed McCoy to start with the ball. Here we go...

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of India starts by saying that the first game was quite pleasing. It was not the easiest of the pitch but they managed to stuck to their plan. Mentions they want the guys to bat anywhere. T20 cricket is a different form of cricket and aims that the boys are flexible enough but cenrtain players are meant for certain roles and they need to focus on that. Adds, with the wind blowing across heavily they wanted to try an extra pacer. Hence Avesh Khan comes in for Ravi Bishnoi. Ends by saying it is very unfortunate for Bishnoi to miss out.

Nicholas Pooran, the skipper of West Indies, says that they will bowl first. He says that the wicket looks really nice and they will look to chase down the total. He adds that they will look to improve from the last game and execute their plans better in this one. He says that it's a new ground and new conditions and they will look to play according to it. He ends by saying Keemo Paul and Shamarh Brooks are out and Brandon King and Devon Thomas replaces them.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan (In place of Ravi Bishnoi).

West Indies (Playing XI) - Kyle Mayers, Devon Thomas (WK) (In place of Keemo Paul), Brandon King (In place of Shamarh Brooks), Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran (C), Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Akeal Hosein, Odean Smith, Alzarri Joseph, Obed McCoy.

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in favour of Nicholas Pooran. West Indies have elected to BOWL first.

As we wait for the action to unfold, let's just try to figure out the team combination India might go with in today’s game. The usual cricketing nous says that after a comfortable win in the first game, India will field an unchanged XI. However, will they open with SKY alongside Rohit Sharma again? Or will they go back to Pant who was opening with Rohit in England? Another option will be to replace Pant with either Ishan Kishan or Sanju Samson. Kishan has done quite well in the opportunities he has got so far while we all know what Sanju Samson can bring to the table. Indian team selection nowadays has become quite fascinating and we should probably stop with the discussion as this discussion can get endless and we are still not into the middle order and bowling department. We shall probably just wait for the toss and figure out what Rohit Sharma and team management decide. Toss is just a few minutes away…
