Okay - on that note from the big man, experience certainly made its presence felt. West Indies have thumped the Proteas in the start of a bumper home season. Watch out, South Africa. Also be prepared, Australia. And all the best, Pakistan. As far as the T20 World Cup is concerned, it is certainly looking at someone who can challenge these blokes. But let's not go that far. The second T20I is almost upon us, with less than 24 hours to go. Join us then again, on Sunday, 27th June, 2021 at 2 pm local (1800 GMT). You can catch how the white-ball leg of the multi-format Indian Women's tour of England goes about in Bristol. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

Victorious West Indies captain, Kieron Pollard, says that they got in a pretty good start. Credits his bowlers for executing the laid-out plans well. Is happy with the positive attitude shown by his batsmen. Calls Evin Lewis a very talented guy and details that he has been doing it for the last couple of years, so it is not actually a big surprise to see him perform well. Ends by saying that compared to the Test side, the white-ball unit is more experienced.

South African skipper, Temba Bavuma, starts by saying that they are disappointed. Stresses that they didn't want to start this way but assures that the Proteas will come back stronger on Sunday, with greater execution. Adds that it was a decent score but they were relying very heavily on bowlers. Admits that they didn't capitalise on their batting in the second half. Honestly says that they were expecting the Windies to come hard at them with the bat, stressing the Lewis-Fletcher stand. Ends by saying that the Saffas have to be more tactically sound and come back stronger in the next game.

EVIN LEWIS HAS BEEN NAMED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH. Lewis says that he is always backing his ability. Adds that it was a nice pitch to bat and that he is a very confident guy, Further says, if the ball is in his arc, he'll have a go but if not, then he will be happy with the single. On possible thoughts of a century, Lewis says that he was indeed thinking about it. Ends by saying that the team should capitalize on this win and carry on.

... THE PRESENTATION ...

Earlier, after electing to bowl, West Indies produced a reasonable bowling display, with Fabian Allen choking the Proteas. For all the big hitting that the Windies are known about, very rarely do they get praised for their bowling skills. They do not have world-class bowlers but they certainly have smart cricketers who know their job well. Please stay tuned for the presentation.

The South African bowling attack wears a forlorn look. Only Tabraiz Shamsi bore respectable figures while Anrich Nortje escaped with just the 2 overs. The rest, just got a tour around the park.

South Africa never even got a chance to understand what was happening. Evin Lewis started his innings with a six and kept dealing in boundaries throughout. His 35-ball 71 had 11 hits to the fence, 7 of them crossing the ropes on the full. 58 of his 71 came in boundaries, with the remaining 13 taking him 23 balls! Andre Fletcher and Chris Gayle played their part while Andre Russell came and finished it off. But really, it was Lewis who was running the show.

Wow. Done and dusted with 5 overs to spare. Would even 200 have made any difference? Don't think so. And the likes of Pollard and Holder did not even come out to bat. Fearsome. Really fearsome batting line up.

Commentary

Welcome back! That was not long, as hoped. The players are in a huddle, the Proteas, that is. Out walk the West Indian openers - Evin Lewis and Andre Fletcher. Why no Chris Gayle, you ask? Because he is going to bat at number 3. This is not from this series, it has been a while now, since the decision has been taken. Big talking point - NO OVERS HAVE BEEN LOST. So West Indies have full quota of 20 overs to chase down 161. South Africa are starting with spin. George Linde will open the proceedings, to Fletcher. Here we go...

4.05 pm local (2005 GMT) - All in readiness for the second innings? Not quite. The DRIZZLE / RAIN HAS RETURNED and so have the covers. Going by the day so far, this should not last long, but fingers crossed. And just as we type that, the clouds see that and make the rain pour heavily. But there is a good breeze blowing across, so hopefully, the clouds are blown away.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then. A track which has something for the bowlers but is a good one to bat as well. Can South Africa make West Indies work for their runs? Another point of having such a big batting line-up is that the batsmen do not put a price tag on their wicket. That might see a collapse. Stay tuned for the run chase.

Fabian Allen is up for a chat. Says that the conditions are good to bowl. Add that he tried to take the wickets early and execute his plans. Further says that playing in the Pakistan Super League was good for him, but he had to transform his form at the international level as well. Ends by saying that they have a deep batting line up and are looking to chase this total down.

Who says that the Windies do not have bowlers? Think again. An excellent bowling effort from the home side. Barring Kevin Sinclair, who did not have a good day, everyone did decently for a major part of the innings. Fabian Allen was the one who started the choke and his spell of 4-0-18-2 did not allow the Proteas to breathe. Dwayne Bravo did his usual stuff towards the end. Cruically, Andre Russell bowled three overs, which is good from a West Indian point of view, given that the T20 World Cup dates are announced.

An innings which lacked momentum for the batting side. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma got starts but it was Rassie van der Dussen who batted through, facing 38 balls for his 56. He took his time a bit early on but then counter-attacked later. However, there was no contribution from the middle and lower middle order. The last 5 overs yielded 46/2 but could have been more had the batters performed.

That is a decent finish for the Saffas. But would it be enough? A target of 161, against a strong batting line-up, well will require excellent bowling effort. South Africa possess a decent bowling attack but the Windies will back themselves to chase this down.

South Africa finish on 160. Full and outside off, van der Dussen drills it straight to long off, towards Pollard. There's a run-out check at the striker's end as it was a direct hit but Rabada was just in.

19.50

Length ball, outside off. Rassie van der Dussen swings and misses.

19.21

19.16

18.62

This is full and outside off, it is jammed out towards cover. They take one. The fielder could have kept it in his hand and let Rabada be on strike in the next over, but he throws it, misses the stumps at the bowler's end and they take one more. Another brilliant over from Bravo. He finishes with figures of 4-0-30-2.

18.54

FOUR! Much-needed runs for the Proteas. Full and outside off. Rabada looks to drive but gets a thick outside edge past short third man for a boundary.

18.41

No hat-trick for Bravo. On the pads. This is flicked to mid-wicket for one.

Kagiso Rabada is the new man in.

18.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! Two in two for Bravo and George Linde has to depart for a duck. Slower fuller ball, outside off. Linde looks to go from the first ball but ends up getting the toe end of his bat, of his attempted loft. Straight towards point where Kevin Sinclair runs back and takes a simple catch. Can Bravo take his hat-trick?

George Linde is the new man in.

18.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Fuller and angling across, outside off.  Miller slashes it flat and straight to Kieron Pollard at long off. The pressure was building and Miller had to go for the big shot.

17.41

Good bowling! A good length ball, outside off. Rassie van der Dussen looks to chop but gets an inside edge towards fine leg for a single.

OUT! RUN OUT OFF A WIDE! The Proteas finally break the opening partnership of 86. And good awareness by Ngidi as well! This is bowled on the pads, Fletcher makes room and looks to sweep but misses. The ball spins away and rolls to Lungi Ngidi at short fine leg. Now, Fletcher is looking at the ball and by that time, Lewis has aready called him through for the run. Fletcher starts to run now, but by then, Ngidi has fired a throw at the bowler's end. It hits the stumps and the run out appeal is referred upstairs. Replays show that Fletcher's bat is short! Perhaps a bit late, but a breakthrough nevertheless. West Indies need 75 more from 78 balls.

The players are out on the field. Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock are the openers for South Africa. Kevin Sinclair will open the bowling for the hosts. Hendricks to face. Here we go then...

South African captain, Temba Bavuma, says they wanted to bowl too. Adds there is a strong sense of confidence within the guys and they need the guys playing the T20s to carry on the good work by the Test team. States the first couple of months was about experimenting and now, it is a lot more clear about who they want to pick and it is a good chance for his side to show their skills.

West Indian skipper, Kieron Pollard, says that with the weather and with the new guys around, bowling first seems like a good choice. Adds that this has been a good wicket for batting over the years and they will look to have a proper plan as to how to chase this down.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Temba Bavuma (C), Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, George Linde, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi and Lungi Ngidi.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Evin Lewis, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran (WK), Kieron Pollard (C), Andre Russell, Jason Holder, Dwayne Bravo, Fabian Allen, Obed McCoy and Kevin Sinclair.

TOSS - The flip of the coin is done. Kieron Pollard has won the toss and WEST INDIES HAVE ELECTED TO CHASE. Not surprising, since there is rain around the horizon and also, they are traditionally better chasers.

Update from another part of the world - This is North America. A cricket match has just ended in the continent of Europe where England have trounced Sri Lanka by 88 runs to whitewash them 3-0 in a T20I series. It was an absolute no match with Sri Lanka simply not turning up. Hopefully this match gives us some entertainment.

How is the weather? The first thing to be checked. Thunderstorms were forecast during the morning and hopefully, we shall have the game start on time. Just had a look at the ground pictures. The sun is shining brightly but there are dark clouds on the horizon.

Hello and warm welcome to the coverage of the first T20I game between West Indies and South Africa. The home side would look to shrug the defeat they suffered in the red-ball series, as now they compete in a format which they are well-known for. On the other hand, the Porteas with a stronger bowling line up, would look to continue their domination away from their home soil. It is going to a thrilling encounter, no doubt about that. Can the West Indies start on a positive note? Or will South Africa upset them yet again? We shall find out soon. Stay tuned for toss and more updates.
