Hello and a very warm welcome to Day 5 of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa. The game did move at a rapid pace on Day 4, and heading into Day 5 the equation is quite clear for both these sides - Bangladesh require 263 runs to win their first ever Test on South African soil, while the Proteas need 7 wickets to go 1-0 up in the series. Earlier in the day, it was a spirited bowling performance from Bangladesh in the second session that brought them back into the contest. All of their bowlers stuck to their task and made amends in the afternoon session, after having leaked 99 runs in the first session. South Africa was cruising along nicely, as at one point, they were 116/1 when Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen were keeping the scoreboard ticking. However, once Elgar perished, South Africa crumbled and they lost 9 wickets for just 88 runs. Bangladesh were set a target of 274 runs but they haven't started the chase well. They now have their task cut out on Day 5 as they cannot afford to keep losing wickets and the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim will hold the key for the Bangla Tigers. This afternoon session has truly belonged to one team and that is the visiting side. While one end worked with pace, the other one was single-handedly managed by Mehidy Hasan. The bowlers worked in tandem, with the fielders being much more attentive on the field. This certainly changed the scenario for Bangladesh. South Africa only managed to score 52 runs in 28 overs. The Bangladeshi bowlers picked up four wickets in this session, out of which two belonged to Hasan, while Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain picked a wicket each. The South African batters were not able to score as freely as they did in the morning session and that might hurt them a lot. It could’ve gotten worse for the home side but with some rub of green they managed to not lose any more wickets till Tea. South Africa lead by 226 runs now. For Bangladesh, it was Ebadot Hossain who set the tone for them as he started exceptionally well in the morning session. He got rid of Sarel Erwee but post that, nothing went their way. They were very sloppy in the slips and dropped a couple of catches. Dean Elgar took full advantage of that and went on to score another half-century. The pair of Keegan Petersen and Dean Elgar have stitched together an unbeaten stand of 57 runs and the Proteas would hope that they bat as deep as possible and set a massive target in front of Bangladesh. Lizaad Williams is in for a chat. He says it still feels unreal to bag three wickets. Mentions all the nerves are gone now. Says he will try to make the most of it in the second innings. Says he is just happy that he could contribute for the team. Adds, he believes his strength is hitting the wicket hard and he focused on doing that. Hopes to be more consistent in the second innings. Says, there is no hassle with his skin condition.

Rangana Herath, the bowling consultant of Bangladesh is up for a chat. He says that there will be some assistance for the spinners and the role of Mehidy Hasan would be very crucial going into Day 4. Adds that there is a lot of potential in this Bangladesh side and they need to be given confidence. Tells that Najmul Hossain Shanto is also a good bowler but he needs to be a bit more confident about his skills. Mentions that the pace bowlers will need to play the supporting role for Mehidy Hasan going ahead in this Test. Says that South Africa is ahead at the moment but he believes that Bangladesh will play their best cricket on the last two days.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, showed grit and determination with the blade on Day 3, but could not cut down the deficit. Bangladesh bowlers have their task cut out now. Even though the entertainment was cut short due to bad light, the officials were forced to call it Stumps on Day 3, as the rain gods had the last say. South Africa still have all their wickets in hand and would hope to post a mammoth total on the board.

South Africa though would have loved to end things pretty earlier but their bowlers were made to toil hard. In the end, they did manage to end Bangladesh’s innings with a lead of 69 runs. Although, the start of the third innings was not a good one, as bad light forced Bangladesh to bowl two spinners after the opening over of Khaled Ahmed. Even this did not go as per plan, as the rain gods had the final say on the moving day. Will the conditions favour South Africa to bat on Day 4? Bangladesh came to bat on Day 3 in a precarious position, it could have gotten worse for them if not for Joy’s knock. He was the sole back bone of their innings. Joy was the first one to get on the crease for the visitors and the last one to show his back to South Africa. The 21-year-old made history by becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a ton against South Africa in Tests.

What a day of Test cricket it was! Although, not the end that we were hoping for. South Africa end Day 3 with a lead of 75 runs. They would look to bat for at least two complete sessions on Day 4 and hope to set up a huge target on the board. Bangladesh would be gutted by their overall batting performance, but there is a new star born for them in Mahmudul Hasan Joy.

UPDATE 1941 IST (1411 GMT) - OH NO! The inevitable has happened. The play has been stopped due to bad light. To make it even worse, the rain gods have spoken as well, with a slight drizzle. For South Africa, it was Lizaad Williams who struck straight after the Lunch break and sent back well-set Liton Das for 41. Although, the Proteas have been a tad inconsistent in the second session and the spinners, Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj have toiled hard to go past the defenses of Mahmudul Hasan Joy, but to no avail. The Proteas did manage to run out Yasir Ali but since then, nothing has gone their way. The partnership between Mehidy Hasan and Mahmudul Hasan Joy is now worth 41 and Bangladesh would hope that they carry on and get as close to South Africa's total as possible. Mahmudul Hasan Joy continues to frustrate South Africa! This has been a terrific innings from Joy so far and not to forget the contributions of Yasir Ali and Mehidy Hasan.
