Delhi Capitals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 21 runs

Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai

Right then, that is all we have from this game. The action continues on Friday, 6th May where Gujarat will go head-to-head against Mumbai. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2.00 pm GMT). As you know, our coverage will begin well in advance. So do join us for the same. Till then, goodbye and cheers!

David Warner is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant knock of 92 from 58 balls! He says that the wicket was very nice and it doesn’t matter whether one bats first or second as it was a true wicket and he has had some success here in the past. Adds that he was cooked at the back end and says that Powell was striking very good in the final overs and that helped. Tells that he does not need extra motivation and says that they all know what has happened before and mentions that it is good to get win. He applauds Powell for his hitting at the end. Talks about the shot he played against Bhuvi, says that he pre-meditated that shot as a reverse-scoop and luckily it came off.

Rishabh Pant, the skipper of Delhi, says there is always room to improve but this gets as close to a perfect batting performance. Mentions that he was trying to take the game deep, he was trying to keep calm in the middle and he kept talking to his bowlers. On Warner's innings, he says that it was a beautiful knock, and it was one of the best knocks he has seen for Delhi in some time now. On Powell, he says that they backed him batting at number 5 and he came out with flying colors. Mentions that they are taking one game at a time and trying to give their 100 percent. Talking about his own wicket, Pant says that yes, he did get out on a full toss, but on some other day that would have been a six. Concludes by saying that it was an important game for them.

Time for the presentation.

Anrich Nortje is down for a chat. He says that he is relieved to be out on the field and it is nice to be playing. Adds that one needs to be a realistic and bowling in the nets is different that bowling in matches and since the last game he was working on his rhythm and now he is feeling like his old self. Tells that Khaleel Ahmed has been bowling well throughout the tournament and all the bowlers have bowled well. Mentions that as a bowler one needs to keep the mind clear and focus on committing to whatever one wants to execute.

Kane Williamson, the skipper of Hyderabad, says that Delhi had a fantastic total on the board, and also they (Hyderabad) did not have a great start with the bat. It is a small ground and less dew and if they had wickets in hand then who knows, it probably could have been different. But he thinks Warner and Powell both were fantastic. Mentions that it's a learning opportunity for Umran Malik, and a lot of learning needs to be done, and as a group, they were put under pressure and Delhi did play well, they still have a few games left and they will look to change things around. On Pooran and Markram, he says that they have been excellent and they have found their rhythm and they got them to close in this game, but they need other players to step up as well, and hopefully, both of them can carry on their form. He mentions that as a batter he always wants more runs and he will look for ways to improve.

Time for some interviews!

Delhi were excellent in the Powerplay but were quite poor in the middle overs. The likes of Marsh and Kuldeep did not have the best of days. However, their bowlers at the death did well to hold their nerve and get their side over the line. Khaleel Ahmed was really good in his return. Shardul Thakur too impressed. However, Delhi will not be pleased with the margin of victory.

The problem was probably the start, they lost 3 in the first  7 overs with not a lot of runs on the board. Markram and Pooran then put on a wonderful partnership which revived the hopes a little. Markram fell but Pooran continued, he got up a fine half ton and kept his side’s hopes alive but a miracle was needed and that wasn’t to be.

A really good effort by Hyderabad to come as close as they did but in the end, it is yet another loss for them. It could have easily been a big one but thanks to Aiden Markram and Pooran they have finished pretty close to the target which did not look possible at one stage.

DRINKS! Hyderabad have lost five wickets and they have been behind in this game thoughout this innings, but they are still in it. Courtesy a good innings by Aiden Markram and now, Nicholas Pooran showing his full range. However, the required rate is still over 15 and if Delhi can get Pooran here or bowl at least one tight over, they will most probably seal the game. OUT! CAUGHT! Unlucky for Abhishek Sharma and Hyderabad! Khaleel Ahmed, the wicket-taker provides the breakthrough. It is honestly a poor delivery with fine leg inside the circle. We are back for the chase! The players have made their out to the middle. Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson will open the batting for Hyderabad.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then! Hyderabad need 208 runs to get back to winning ways! They do not have a brutal batting lineup but they have quality players who are capable of chasing this down. Stay tuned for the second essay.

Rovman Powell is down for a chat. He says that he was trying his best to hit sixes. Adds that he asked Warner at the start of the over whether he should take a single to let Warner hit a century but he told Powell to go for the shots. Informs that he had a chat with Pant before the game and he asked Pant to let him bat at number 5. Mentions that the surface is a good one to bat on and they need to bowl well and use the long boundaries to good effect. Tells that the target should be enough and chasing over 200 is never easy.

Other than the first over of the innings, nothing really went Hyderabad's way. Bhuvneshwar Kumar did trouble the batters with his swing and he was also rewarded with a wicket. But post that it was all Delhi! All the bowlers were taken to the cleaners tonight. They sure did miss the services of T Natarajan. It was not just their bowling, but they were a bit sloppy on the field as well. However, they face a tough task ahead now, but not an impossible one.

Delhi did not get off to a great start, they lost Mandeep Singh in the first over, and soon lost Marsh as well. While wickets were falling at the other end, David Warner made sure to keep scoring runs and got a total of 50 at the end of the Powerplay. Pant perished after playing a cameo and post that Rovman Powell and Warner started firing and they made sure they kept the run rate above 9 throughout their innings. The duo put together 122 runs and powered Delhi to a total of 207.

It's been an exuberant exhibition of power-hitting from Delhi! David Warner and Rovman Powell have put on a scintillating batting performance and have guided Delhi to a mammoth total of over 200. Not the best day in the field for Hyderabad! They have a mountain to climb from here now.

The cover fielder though does not collect it and Williamson at mid off picks it up and has a shy but misses. No backing up so the single is eventually taken.

Umran Malik comes into the attack.

Not a maiden as a single is taken on the last ball! Outside off, this is guided through point for one.

2.5 0

Can this now be two maidens in a row for Kumar? He goes fuller and on middle, this is pushed to mid on.

2.4 0

Another leave! Outside off, Warner watches the ball closely and leaves it alone.

2.3 0

Brilliant stuff! He is moving the ball both the ways and causing a lot of problems! The line though is a little too straight, Warner misses the flick and gets hit on the pads.

2.2 0

BEATEN! That is another beauty! Gets it to shape away from a length and after landing it on off. Warner looks to push at it but is beaten.

2.1 0

Warner was watchful there! This is an away swinger, outside off, Warner lets it go to the keeper.

A dot to end but an expensive start by Abbott! Angled into the pads, Marsh looks to flick but misses to get hit high on the pads.  There is an appeal from the bowler but it is a rather optimistic one as it is clearly going down leg.

1.5 1

A little too straight, gets away with it, Warner only manages to work it towards fine leg for one.

1.4 1

Fuller this time and on middle, Marsh pushes it towards mid off for one.

1.3 4

FOUR! That is smacked away! Trademark Marsh! This is slightly short, he just picks the length early on such deliveries, hammers it through square leg for a boundary.

1.2 1

Now follows it with a run as he pushes this fuller one towards mid off.

1.1 4

FOUR! Almost another wicket! That is a really good attempt in the cover region. This is wide outside off, fuller, Warner looks to hit it on the up, it goes uppishly but just wide of the diving cover fielder and into the fence. Off the mark with a boundary are Delhi and Warner.

Sean Abbott will bowl from the other end.

End of a brilliant first over by Kumar. A wicket maiden! On off, this is defended.

Mitchell Marsh walks out to bat at number 3.

OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! There is the early wicket Hyderabad wanted. Mandeep Singh had no clue about which way the ball was moving, he was struggling on the previous deliveries and finally falls. Not a good return back into the team for him. This is now the away swinger, shapes away after landing on off. Singh lunges out to defend but it goes off the outside edge and it is taken by the keeper, Nicholas Pooran safely.

0.4 0

Good swing again but this is a little too down the leg side. This one tails back in from middle, hits the pad of Mandeep as he tries to flick.

0.3 0

Really good bowling! Got the last two to go away, this time gets it back in from outside off. Singh looks to flick but is late on the shot. Misses to get hit high on the pads.

0.2 0

Yet again not the right line, well outside off, shaping away. Left alone.

0.1 0

Nice away swing for Kumar to begin with! Length and around off, this shapes away. Easy leave.

We are ready for action! The players are out in the middle. David Warner and Mandeep Singh will open the batting for Delhi. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will begin the proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

Mitchell Marsh is down for a chat. He says that it was good to get a few off the middle in the last game but getting a win will be important. Mentions that they have a great team but it's just about clicking as a team and they have had close games, also it will be good if one of our top-four go big. Mentions that he has loved batting at number 3 and Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson's support have been helpful. Informs that bowling is coming along well, and if Rishabh is listening to this, he is ready to go!

Rishabh Pant, the skipper of Delhi, says that they have no problem with batting first. Informs that they have made four changes in their team. Tells that some changes are forced as Axar got injured and few changes are tactical changes because of the wicket. Mentions that they can learn from their mistakes and keep improving.

Kane Williamson, the skipper of Hyderabad, says that he will bowl first, maybe the dew will play a factor and they are looking forward to chase. Mentions that their losses in the previous games have been different, but still a few positives. Informs that they have three changes, three debutants will play tonight, and Marco Jansen, T Natarajan and Sundar are the players who will miss out. Adds that the new players are excited and pumped for today's game. Concludes by saying that they need to keep moving forward and execute their plans.

Delhi (Playing XI) - Mandeep Singh (In place of Prithvi Shaw), David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant (C) (WK), Rovman Powell, Lalit Yadav, Ripal Patel (In place of Axar Patel), Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed (In place of Chetan Sakariya), Anrich Nortje (In place of Mustafizur Rahman).

Hyderabad (Playing XI) - Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram, Kane Williamson (C), Rahul Tripathi, Nicholas Pooran (WK), Shashank Singh, Sean Abbott (In place of Marco Jansen), Shreyas Gopal (In place of Washington Sundar), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kartik Tyagi (In place of T Natarajan), Umran Malik.

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in favour of Hyderabad. They have elected to BOWL first.

Kevin Pietersen is down near the pitch. He says that the outfield is like a carpet here, one side is short while the other side is long. Adds that Kuldeep Yadav has had some success here, and he has bowled slower on this wicket. Tells that batters will enjoy on this pitch. Further adds that there are chances of dew which means the captain winning the toss will bowl first.

Sean Abbott, Shreyas Gopal and Kartik Tyagi are seen getting their caps in the Hyderabad huddle. So expect at least three changes in the Hyderabad XI.

UPDATE -  Prithvi Shaw has not made it to the ground due to some illness and he will miss the game tonight. Who will open alongside David Warner?

David Warner is up against his former team, the team that he has captained to the title win in 2016. He surely knows a lot about this Hyderabad team and its management and it was quite a bitter end to his stay in the Hyderabad camp last year. Will all those things bring any impact on Warner’s performance and the overall result of this game? Warner will surely be eager to go out there in the field and make a statement. Let’s see how things pan out. Toss and team sheets coming up.

Games are moving along quickly as we welcome you to the coverage of the 50th game of this year’s Indian T20 League and it is a clash between two sides in desperate need of a win, Hyderabad and Delhi. The former began brilliantly but now are on a losing run. Delhi on the other hand, have lacked consistency so far in this tournament. Both enter this game on the back of a defeat and will be eager to get to winning ways. Who will do so?
