New Zealand would want to post a big first innings total. The foundation was laid by Devon Conway and Will Young and with Henry Nicholls still on the crease, the Kiwis would look to pile as many runs as possible. In posting a hundred on Saturday, Conway became just the sixth man in history and the first since Michael Clarke in 2004 to score a century in his first Tests at both home and away. Australian duo Harry Graham and Kepler Wessels, Pakistan's Azhar Mahmood and England's Sir Andrew Strauss are the other men to achieve the rare feat.

New Zealand will be fairly satisfied with the runs they have on the board while Bangladesh would be happy too as the bowlers chipped up 3 wickets in the final session of Day 1 and didn't let their opponents run away with the game. Let's see what Day 2 has in store for us.

Right then! The visitors will be happy with the wickets they picked in the final session and would look to build on the same. New Zealand, on the flip side, would want Henry Nicholls to bat for long and get close to the 350-run mark. The action continues on Sunday, January 2, 2022. Devon Conway is up for a chat. He says that it was very challenging to bat upfront and the wicket was green. Mentions that it got a lot better lately and is happy to contribute. Tells that Bangladesh bowled pretty well and it was all about being patient. Adds that they are disappointed that they lost Tom Blundell at the end but feels that they are still in a strong position. On his wicket, he says that it is the last way one wants to get out after all the hard work but that's how it goes.

Bangladesh started the first hour of the day really well but looked to have lost their track as the ball kept getting old and there was no movement off it. The pitch too got better and better to bat. Bangladesh bowlers toiled very hard and gained rewards with three wickets in the final session. That would certainly boost their confidence after ending the day on a positive note.

After losing Tom Latham early on and Will Young before Tea, Devon Conway and Ross Taylor batted really well and the runs kept coming at a brisk rate after the Tea break. Taylor was struggling to find the middle of the blade initially but got into his rhythm and struck some beautiful shots but unfortunately, he slipped out once he tried to up his ante. Later, Nicholls came in and made his intentions clear with his aggressive shots. But soon after, Conway was sent back as well and at the stroke of Stumps, they lost Tom Blundell as well. The Kiwis are still in a commonding position though and would look to pile as many runs as possible on Day 2.

What a great comeback by the visitors in the final session of the day. It was all about New Zealand in the first two sessions, but the hosts lost Devon Conway who was well set and then lost Tom Blundell at the stroke of Stumps. Bangladesh would be happy with their bowling performance and would hope to end things early on Day 2.

Session 2 Summary - 81runs, 0 wickets, 27 overs. Clearly, this session belonged to the hosts. Yes, they did lose Will Young but before that, he and Devon Conway continued post Lunch to blunt the Bangladesh bowling attack. The duo kept motoring along and also brought up their individual fifties. The track eased out considerably and it looked like Bangladesh would have a wicketless session but credit to some good piece of fielding, they saw the back of Will Young. Devon Conway on his return has been looking in good touch and is inching closer to his century. Bangladesh would dearly love a wicket or two post Tea to get some momentum but will have to be more disciplined with the ball. ... DAY1, SESSION 2 ...

Bangladesh seamers were on the money in the opening hour of the session and got an important wicket of Latham. Later, they were unable to cause much threat and leaked handful runs. The bowlers though kept their lines and lengths tight just to build some pressure on the hosts. Even though they were not rewarded, the visitors would look to continue on their good way. It was not a good start for the hosts, they lost their skipper, Tom Latham, pretty early on. Then a steady stand between Conway and Young made sure they remain unscathed till Lunch. Certainly after the drinks break, the runs came in a convincingly good rate for the Kiwis. The pair stitched a crucial partnership of 65 runs.

After a slow start, Conway and Young managed to stable the ship for their side. A bright start by the visitors but they could not capitalize on it.

Bangladesh come into the series as underdogs but will be eager to punch above their weights despite their poor record. Mominul Haque has a massive responsibility on his shoulders and has lot to prove in this series. He will already be without their main gun, Shakib Al Hasan and will also miss the services of Tamim Iqbal. While Mahmudullah has retired from the format and thus, a lot relies on the skipper and the veteran Mushfiqur Rahim. Given all that, it is going to take a herculean effort from the visitors to register their first WTC points. Will they be able to do so? We will find out over the course of the next 5 days. New Zealand will be without Kane Williamson and also have surprisingly left out Ajaz Patel who claimed all 10 wickets against India in the first innings of the second Test. But Tom Latham will be with his entire frontline pace attack. Devon Conway is also set to return after an injury. This series will be special for another reason, as veteran batter Ross Taylor announced retirement from international cricket and this two Tests will be his final hurrah in the longest format.

On the flip side, Bangladesh have had a disastrous 2021 atleast in the longest format of the game. They have lost five Tests, drew one and their solitary win came against Zimbabwe. To add salt to the injury, their record in New Zealand is something they wouldn't want to look at. Can they turn things this time around?

New Zealand are coming into this series after a 1-0 loss against India. The same side against whom they won the inaugural World Test Championship. Now their next challenge is Bangladesh. Tom Latham is set to don the captaincy hat as Kane Williamson is ruled out of the series with a shoulder injury. The Kiwis' home record against Bangladesh is superb as they have played 9 Tests and have won all of them. Can they continue their home dominance against the Bangla Tigers?
