DRINKS BREAK. Well, a look at the scorecard and you would say that South Africa are cruising. But if you have actually followed the game in the last 30 minutes or so, you would feel that anything is possible even now. India started the day poorly, giving too many freebies but the last 30 minutes have seen them getting disciplined. That resulted in the wicket of Rassie van der Dussen and almost of Bavuma too. Sunil Gavaskar on air opines that he sees players practice those tough boundary catches in warmup sessions but no fast bowler practices return catches. Adds that those must be practiced too. 59 runs needed for one team, 7 wickets required for the other. Trust us - this is not over yet. Play can technically go on till 10 pm IST (1630 GMT) but the conditions are already murky and the floodlights are switched on. Don't see this going for too long.

Cheteshwar Pujara is down for the chat, he says that the game is similar to 2018. Adds that it was a little more up and down at that time but this pitch has still good help. He mentions that the recent overseas success has helped them develop confidence and adds that the bowlers have always picked 20 wickets in the recent past. He reckons that Ashwin will also have a role to play on this pitch. He states that it was his game plan to score on any opportunity he gets on this pitch. He adds that losing Virat is not easy but mentions that the bench strength of this Indian team is very good and guys are ready whenever they get the opportunity.

PITCH REPORT - Morne Morkel in the pitch report says that, it will move around in the first couple of overs and batters need to rotate strike. He mentions that under lights and in overcast conditions it will be hard work for the batters.

So, we have enough time for some quality action today but will we get the result in these 34 overs? That's a big question and will be answered in a few hours time.

UPDATE - 6:31 pm IST (1.01 pm GMT) - We have some awesome news! The play is scheduled to start at 7:15 pm IST (1:45 pm GMT). 34 overs will be bowled today.  Play can go on uptill 9:30 pm IST (4:00 pm GMT), with another 30 minutes extension, weather and light permitting.

UPDATE - 6:18 pm IST (12:48 pm GMT) - Tea has been officially taken and we might well see some action in the final session of the day. Fingers crossed!

UPDATE - 6:01 pm IST (12:31 am GMT) - The rain has stopped for sure this time and it has gotten a lot brighter too! Really good news! The groundsmen are also making their way on the ground. The covers are coming off and we might get atleast two hours of play today.

UPDATE - 5:40 pm IST (12:10 pm GMT) - The rain has eased down a little at the Wanderers and we might get some action today and quite possibly even the result. But for all that, the rain has to stop completely and then this superb drainage system at the Wanderers can do its job.

UPDATE - 5:23 pm IST (11:53 am GMT) - It’s raining cats and dogs here at Wanderers and the possibility of play today are getting slimmer and slimmer. Surely, the middle session is washed out too and what was expected to be a thrilling day of Test cricket has turned out to be a rather frustrating day for cricket lovers around the world.

UPDATE - 5.00 pm IST (11:30 am GMT) - Ever thought a draw could be a possibility in this game? Well, it surely is on the cards now. Probably a very slender chance but surely is. The rain continues to come down and the forecast ahead isn’t that great too. Also, there is rain predicted on Day 5 also so you can’t rule it out.

UPDATE - 4:40 pm IST (11:10 am GMT) - The rain continues to come down! There was some optimism built in the Lunch when the covers seemed like coming off but they are back on again and we continue to hope for things to get better.

It seems like this is a season of retirement and Bhanuka Rajapaksha is the latest addition to it. Mohammad Hafeez and Ross Taylor also hung their boots from international cricket a few days back while Quinton de Kock decided to quit Test cricket. Earlier, it was Harbhajan Singh who decided to retire from all forms of cricket.

Also, if you haven't heard about it, Rajapaksha has announced retirement not sure why, to be honest as he just started playing his best cricket in recent times! He had a bad time when he made a comeback in the side last year but slowly, he was getting to his best. That really came as a surprise.

Really surprised they have not picked Jemimah Rodrigues! Yes, she has not played a lot of ODIs in recent times for India but we really thought she would be named in the squad especially after the form she has shown in recent times. Yes, it has been more in the shorter format but pretty sure she has the quality to adapt to the 50-over format too. Still though, there are quite a few exciting players to look at like Pooja Vastrakar who was so impressive in the Australian series. Also, Richa Ghosh who has really grown as a player and the classy Yastika Bhatia who also showed a lot of promise Down-Under. And then there is the experienced heads of Mandhana, Raj, Kaur and the ever reliable Jhulan Goswami. Really, a promising team and we expect them to do well in the World Cup.

Earlier in the day, India riding on the twin fifties of Pujara and Rahane managed to set a target of 240 for South Africa. Rabada was impressive as he broke the backbone of the Indian middle-order with the wickets of Rahane, Pujara and Pant. But such has been the spirit of this Indian team that Vihari along with the lower order managed to take them to a formidable total. Now after yet another riveting day of Test cricket, we can still say that this match hangs right in the balance.

It was Lord Shardul Thakur who started the session with a brilliant spell and got rid of Aiden Markram. All other bowlers were quite disciplined but the breakthrough eluded them as Elgar and Keegan Petersen started building a solid partnership. But this is a Test match and you cannot keep Ashwin out of the action for long and he delivered yet again with a wicket of solid-looking Keegan Petersen. Indian bowlers failed to get any further breakthrough and will now need 8 wickets to seal this match and series on Day 4.

South Africa need 122 runs to win and have 8 wickets in hand. Captain Elgar is looking solid out there in the middle and has Rassie van der Dussen for his company. Markram and Elgar scored runs at a brisk rate for the hosts. Bumrah and Shami were operating from each end. Both the bowlers got some movement off the deck but not enough to find the outside edge. This is the time when South African batter can make a statement with the blade here. They need to take it session by session, rather than charging towards the target. India, on the flip side, would hope to pick up a couple of wickets before the Stumps on Day 3 to put their noses in front. So finally South Africa gets the breakthrough and end a superb innings by Thakur. Can South Africa bundle out India quickly now?

The balls are disappearing all across the ground. The umpire jogs in to offer a few options for a similar ball as the last one had gotten wet as it went in a puddle.

... Day 3, Session 2 ...

Kagiso Rabada was an inspiration with the ball to get his side back in the hunt. The bowlers were taken to the cleaners in the first hour of the session, as Pujara and Rahane were up to the task. But once Rahane fell, the hosts had a sniff and made sure to capitalize on it. Rabada soon sent back Pujara and Pant to give his side a glimmer of hope. Ngidi chipped in as well with a wicket right before Lunch to make his sides job easier in the next session. The hosts would like to come back and bowl out India as soon as possible. It is time to repay the faith in the experienced pair of Rahane and Pujara. The duo racked up 66 runs in 14 overs in the first hour of the session and it looked like India will grind the hosts into dust, but the trajectory changed soon after Rahane slipped out after making his half-century. Pujara made his 32nd Test half-century but was unable to convert in into three digits. As, Pujara and Pant were sent back to the pavilion. After playing a few lusty blows Ashwin slipped out right at the brink of Lunch. But India still have a slight advantage with a lead of 161 runs.

It was certainly a session of two halves. The first one belonged to India while South Africa fought hard and made sure the visitors do not run away with the game.

South Africa gets another wicket and they have pulled back this game nicely now. Ashwin is a capable batter and this is a big wicket for South Africa. Can they restrict Indian lead to under 200 now?

Pitch Report - Morne Morkel says that there are cracks on the pitch and they will open up. He adds that the wicket does look drier and it will turn. He mentions that it will be tough wicket to bat and if bowlers bowl in good areas they will get rewards on this wicket.

Shardul Thakur was the star for India on Day 2 as he picked seven wickets to restrict South Africa to 229. South Africa still managed to get a crucial lead of 27 runs and have priced out both the Indian openers before the end of play on Day 2. However, India have a lead of 58 runs now with eight wickets in hand and given that South Africa have to bat last on this pitch, the pressure is on South Africa to restrict India to a low total here. Earlier in the day, it was Lord Thakur show as he picked seven wickets to bundle out South Africa for 229. South African batters, on the other hand, did well to get a crucial lead of 27 runs but they have to bat last on this pitch and that can be difficult task on this pitch. So it is upto their bowlers now to restrict India to as low a total as possible. But the game stands well in balance at this point of time.

South African bowlers bowled with good steam and troubled Indian batters quite a lot. The youngster Jansen again provided the first breakthrough as he got the big fish Rahul out cheaply. The comeback man, Duanne Olivier got the wicket of Mayank Agarwal as both the in-form batters were sent back to the hut. They have already got two wickets and will be looking to get eight more as early as possible on Day 3 to restrict India to a chaseable total here.

Indian batters showed good intent and did not miss out on any scoring opportunity. But the wickets of their two in-form batters have pulled them back a little. The experienced duo of Pujara and Rahane is out there in the middle and India will hope that they finally deliver when it matters the most. Pujara has batted with good positive intent so far in this innings. Remember, they are also playing for their place in the team and it will be interesting to see how they go about their business on Day 3.

South Africa were doing really well and it looked like they would enter Lunch unscathed but the dimension of the game changed when Dean Elgar got out and then Shardul Thakur struck twice at the stroke of Lunch to put India in the ascendancy. Two new batters were at the crease post Lunch for the hosts in Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne and they batted beautifully. The duo dealt with some real peaches and scored at a decent clip but Shardul Thakur or as he is called, Lord Shardul Thakur once again got the breakthrough removing Kyle Verreynne. While Bavuma continued on his merry way and brought up his half century but departed immediately. The tail was exposed then and India need just 3 wickets before they come out to bat again. ... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...

Indian bowlers were top-notch this morning but some quality batting by South Africa denied them a breakthrough for the most part of the session. It was the man with the golden arm, Shardul Thakur who eventually got the wicket of South African skipper, Dean Elgar. After his wicket, the pair of Petersen and Rassie van der Dussen were tasted with some quality seam bowling and Shardul Thakur again got into the act with the wickets of Keegan Petersen and Rassie van der Dussen. India have got three wickets in the final half-hour of the first session and will be now looking to dictate terms. Can India continue their fightback with more wickets in the next session? We shall find out as we will be back for the post-lunch session at 4.10 pm IST (10.40 am GMT).

Another session, that looked like going South Africa’s way was pulled back by India with three wickets in the last half hour of the session. In testing conditions where the ball was seaming and swinging quite a bit, South Africa  batted solidly at the start. Both Elgar and Keegan Petersen were solid this morning and despite some quality bowling by Indian bowlers, the pair ensured that India were denied the breakthrough for the major part of the session. Elgar departed just half an hour before Lunch but young Keegan Petersen carried on and got to his maiden Test fifty. But the wickets of Keegan Petersen and Rassie van der Dussen just at the stroke of the Lunch has ensured that India have an opening now.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Things are falling apart for South Africa now. Shardul Thakur has struck not once, not twice, but thrice for India and has put his side back in the game. Back of a length, outside off, coming into the batter. Rassie van der Dussen is caught on the crease as he tries to defend. The ball goes off the inside edge, hits him on the pads and carries through to Rishabh Pant who dives ahead to grab the ball. Shardul Thakur appeals and the umpire raises his finger. Well, well, well, the replay shows that the ball hit the grass before Rishabh Pant caught it but Rassie van der Dussen started walking to the pavilion. So the decision stands. South Africa have been reduced to 102/4 in no time. Shardul Thakur has picked up three wickets in a span of 4.5 overs. Top stuff from the man with the golden arm. THAT WILL BE LUNCH ON DAY 2!

The ball goes behind and India are very confident that it came off the outside edge and even the umpire felt the same. Rassie van der Dussen though reviews it. UltraEdge shows that it came off the back pad instead. The on-field decision is overturned and South Africa retain their review. Replay also shows that the ball bounced in front of Rishabh Pant before he grabbed it.
