Afghanistan embarked on their tour to Sri Lanka with high hopes and expectations. However, their journey so far hasn't been fruitful. They suffered a defeat in the one-off Test without much of a challenge. Although they displayed great fighting spirit in the first ODI, they ended up on the losing side. In the second game, they were completely outplayed. With winning the series now out of reach, they can only aim to salvage some pride and avoid a whitewash. Struggling without their formidable spin duo of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman, Afghanistan have conceded 300+ totals in both matches. Noor Ahmad and Qais Ahmad have failed to make a significant impact, while pacers Fazalhaq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmad have also struggled. Their batting has been inconsistent too. In the first game, Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai kept them in contention while chasing a massive target with two huge centuries after the top order failed, but couldn't seal the win. In the previous game, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah got half-centuries, but the rest of the batting lineup failed, resulting in a heavy defeat. Omarzai compensated for his batting failure with excellent bowling, emerging as one of the top all-rounders globally. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi's lack of runs is concerning, and they hope to regain it and perform collectively in the upcoming game to challenge the hosts. On the other hand, Sri Lanka can consider themselves somewhat fortunate, with Pathum Nissanka's sensational double hundred in the first game making the difference. Contributions from Avishka Fernando, who narrowly missed a century, were also crucial. In the last ODI, it was more of a collective effort, with Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Janith Liyanage registering fifties, while Asalanka smashed a brilliant 97.
