Commentary

Right then, not quite a clean sweep from Sri Lanka but 2-0 and a tied game will feel equally good against the number 1 ranked Men's ODI side in India. That also concludes this white ball tour where India swept away the T20 series 3-0 and were then equally humbled in the ODIs. Next up, Sri Lanka will fly to the UK for a Test series against England starting on August 21 whereas India have a bit of an extended break before welcoming Bangladesh for a tour beginning on September 19. We hope you enjoyed our coverage, thanks for tuning in. Until next time then, take care and goodbye!

Charith Asalanka then goes on to collect the series-winning check and trophy and the whole Sri Lankan squad poses buoyantly for a team photo. Also, the groundstaff is given an award as a sign of appreciation.

Charith Asalanka the winning skipper of Sri Lanka collects the winner's cheque and is up for a chat now. He begins by saying that he is a happy captain and appreciates the team for playing well. Says they knew that the Indian batting unit was very strong and that they just backed their strengths and it was the spinners who did the job. With a broad smile, he says the team environment is really positive and the boys are in a good mood.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that the challenge against spin isn't a real concern but the players have to look into their game individually and come up with a few plans. Adds that when you are playing for the nation, there is no complacency and they came out here trying to win every game but were simply outplayed by the opposition and credit needs to be given where it's due. Mentions that taking the pace off the ball was the key and hence, rested the extra pacer and need to look after the players who haven't got an opportunity. Adds that throughout the series, there were a few positives with how the spinners bowled and with how a few of the batters played in that middle order. Goes on to say that all is not lost and it is not the end of the world given how well they have played in the last few years and they are bound to lose a series or so in between.

Dunith Wellalage is the Player of the Series for his invaluable performances with both bat and ball. He scored 106 runs in 3 matches and also scalped 7 wickets. He is up for a quick word and thanks his skipper and coaching staff for supporting him. Says the wicket was turning and it was all about adapting to the conditions. Further tells that they did not make silly mistakes. Also appreciates the batters for batting well.

Avishka Fernando is the Player of the Match for his stellar knock of 96 runs. He starts by saying that he is happy about his knock as the surface was tough and the batters got together and put on a good total. Adds that he faced a few challenges batting on the surface and lets out a bit of a smile while showing disappointment for missing out on a century.

The Presentation ceremony...

Maheesh Theekshana is all smiles and is up for a flash interview. He begins by saying that this series win is surely a confidence booster for his side and the country as a whole. Adds this has been a huge comeback after the T20I series defeat and says winning an ODI series for the first time since 1997 is a special feeling. Is grateful to be the part of this playing XI. Further says that they knew India play at home ground with short boundaries and knew they could make them work more hard on these big grounds and in-form spinners. Ends by saying this is a special series win and a huge confidence booster.

Earlier in the game, for a third time in a row, Rohit Sharma called incorrectly and Sri Lanka batted first, making ample use of the early batting-friendly conditions. The Lankan openers took the bull by the horns and put Mohammed Siraj to the sword inside the Powerplay. Even the spinners weren't able to get an eye in but once Axar Patel got that first wicket, things evened out. Avishka Fernando starred with a brilliant knock of 96 as Kusal Mendis struck a valuable half-century. For India, the spinners bowled well but it was the debutant Riyan Parag who picked up 3 wickets and they just managed to restrict Sri Lanka to under 250 runs. In reply, India huffed and puffed, getting away quickly in the Powerplay thanks to Rohit Sharma but flopped in the middle phase and went on to lose the game by a huge margin.

Let's talk numbers now and they are certainly baffling - 43 wickets fell to the spinners in this three-match series, most in any bilateral series ever and India lost 27 out of their 30 wickets to spin, the most as well for them in a bilateral series, beating the previous record of 19 wickets against Pakistan in 1996 by a big margin.

India have yet again come short in their trial against spin and such has been the norm in recent years but this loss will particularly hurt as a new era under Gautam Gambhir begins with a thumping ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka. India simply didn't turn up with the bat and apart from skipper Rohit Sharma, no one was able to remain positive and muster up runs. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli looked under-cooked and that middle order simply crumbled under pressure. There was some counter-attack from Washington Sundar way down the order but by then, the game had already slipped out of India's hands.

A monumental day in Sri Lankan cricket as they make it eight home bilateral series unbeaten in ODIs and finally, they managed to get the wood over India. 'Spin to win' was the mantra throughout this series but the Lankan batters need to be applauded equally as they put on fighting scores in all three games which allowed their spinners to come to the fore and boy, they did and how! Dunith Wellalage finished the game with a five-wicket haul and was certainly the standout player of this series. Asitha Fernando bowled a lovely spell up top as well and the likes of Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay were able to chip in with a couple of wickets as well.

SRI LANKA SCRIPT HISTORY AS THEY BEAT INDIA IN A BILATERAL SERIES AFTER 27 YEARS! This has been a long time coming and Sri Lankan players can now simply rejoice and soak in the roaring applause from the crowd, beating the ODI World Cup runners-up and T20 World Cup Champions in front of their home crowd for the first time in the 21st century. A 110-run victory against the Asian giants and when was the last time, we saw India lose an ODI game by more than 100 runs? Not in recent memory for sure.

26.1W

OUT! LBW! HISTORY HAS BEEN SCRIPTED AT THE 'KHETTARAMA'! And the 27-year long wait has finally come to an end for Sri Lanka. Dunith Wellalage hustles from around the stumps and dishes out a flighted conventional off-break around the middle and off stump line. Kuldeep Yadav sits down on his knee to sweep it away but completely misses and plays over the line of the ball, wearing it on the front pad and right in front of the pegs. Joel Wilson raises up his finger and the crowd erupts in delight and pride as Sri Lanka beat India by a huge margin of 110 runs. The hosts seal the series by 2-0. And in all fairness to say, the Lankan spinners have outnumbered the Indian batters in this ODI series. Dunith Wellalage finish off with a spectacular 5-fer.

Mohammed Siraj is the last man in for India. Sri Lanka is on the brink of creating history at the iconic Premadasa.

OUT! CAUGHT! Jeffrey Vandersay hangs onto the catch on the second attempt and Sri Lanka have the wicket they wanted. Maheesh Theekshana flights the ball up on a dragged length around off stump and draws Washington Sundar forward. Sundar leans on and looks to loft it away but has to reach for it and ends up skiing it over mid off. Vandersay comes in from the long off fence and moves to his right before fumbling the ball but he manages to regain composure and snatches it on the second attempt. Sundar departs after a fighting knock and Sri Lanka are one wicket away from victory.

25.50

A confident appeal from Kusal Mendis for a caught behind but the umpire says no. Maheesh Theekshana drags this one down and bowls it wide of the off stump, turning it away. Washington Sundar backs away to cut but misses and Mendis does well to move to his left and pouch the ball. No review taken and the replays show that the ball went well under the bat.

25.40

Beaten all ends up! Flighted again and on a length around middle, this one dips and turns away with additional bounce. Washington Sundar has a big swipe across the line but is well beaten.

25.30

Flighted up on a fuller length, angled into middle and leg and just turning away, Sundar plays it late and with soft hands, edging it away wide of the keeper.

25.21

Full again and drifted on the pads now, Kuldeep Yadav works it around the corner and rotates the strike.

25.10

Bowled full on middle and leg, Kuldeep Yadav just flicks it away to mid-wicket.

Beaten again! Maheesh Theekshana cannot believe that he isn't able to fine the outside edge here. Nice and full around off, bowled at a brisk pace as well, turning away sharply and beating the outside edge.

Commentary

We are back for India's reply! The umpires are out to the middle and the Sri Lankan players have taken their respective fielding positions. Out walk the Indian opening duo - Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma with Rohit taking the strike. Asitha Fernando the right arm pacer to begin the proceedings with the new ball and a slip in place. Here we go...

... RUN CHASE ...

Right then, after the first inning that zigzagged back and forth, Sri Lanka has managed to post a challenging total on a tacky deck. Sri Lanka too, has strode out with a spin-heavy bowling unit and have been reinforced with the likes of Theekshana. But the Indians have got an experienced line up ready to take on the challenge. It will be an interesting battle to watch out for. With the series on the line, will Sri Lanka emerge victorious or will India strike a comeback this time around? Stay tuned as the blockbuster run chase is up next shortly.

Riyan Parag, the debutant is down for a quick chat. He says that he is a little disappointed and feels he could have given even fewer runs. Adds that he was very surprised to see no turn in the first 25 overs but it did start to turn and the score on the board is a good sign. Reckons that they pulled things back nicely in the middle overs and is confident that his side will chase it down.

The lack of wickets was clearly getting under their skin. Kuldeep kept things tight with his slower pace but couldn't bag a wicket. It was Parag who finally opened the floodgates, kickstarting a collapse that Siraj and Kuldeep happily joined in on. After a sluggish start, India pulled off quite the comeback in the death overs but again leaked plenty in the last three overs.

India, meanwhile, went with a 'spin to win' strategy, fielding just one pacer on a track that had been a spinner's paradise. Siraj got a bit of a spanking, while Dube kept things tidy. With no early breakthroughs, captain Rohit had to call in the spin cavalry sooner, but even they couldn't crack the code initially. The Indian spinners were a bit quick in pace initially which didn't allow the ball to grip and turn until Axar finally struck gold around the 20th over.

This time around, the Lankan lads navigated the tricky middle overs with caution and not losing too many. The top three made spin bowling look easy, pacing their innings beautifully and racking up a cool 102 runs after the powerplay. Just when it looked like they were about to go ballistic, though, wickets started tumbling. Déjà vu striked back. The middle order wobbled again, and Sri Lanka found themselves sliding from a comfy 171/1 to a not-so-pretty 199/6 which took the wings out of their sails to an extent. Kusal Mendis crawled through his inning for most of the part but accelerated with a few lusty blows in the end, and he helped his side to post a challenging total of 248.

The Sri Lankan innings began with momentum, as Pathum Nissanka took an aggressive approach, frequently finding the boundary. This aggressive stance allowed his partner Avishka to ease into his role, playing a steady supporting innings. With the ball not getting that purchase on this fresh deck initially, it allowed them to play their strokes freely and they handled the spinners cautiously too by playing percentage cricket.

A good comeback from Sri Lanka after that recurring collapse as they managed to yield 31 runs off the last 3 overs. Indian bowlers, on the other hand, managed to pull things back neatly but they will feel they gave away plenty in the death overs. 248 on the board, this is already the highest first-inning total in this series and given how tough it has been to chase, Sri Lanka does possess a strong and in-form spin bowling attack.

Excellent running from the batters! Full and quick, right at the toes, Maheesh Theekshana manages to dig the ball out wide of the bowler and towards the vacant mid on region. The batters do well to race back for two runs as Siraj chases the ball down. 15 runs to end the innings and Sri Lanka finish on a solid total of 248/7 on the board!

49.51

Just a single this time. Banged in short and over leg stump, Kamindu Mendis takes on the pull but mistimes it aerially on the bounce to deep square leg for a single.

49.42

Slower one, bowled full and outside off, Kamindu Mendis waits well and hammers it to the right of long off for a couple of runs.

49.36

SIX! Massive hit from Kamindu Mendis and this is now the highest team score of the series. Mohammed Siraj loses his length and serves a gentle full toss on the stumps, Kamindu Mendis gets under the ball and smokes it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie.

49.21

Goes full and angles it into the legs, Maheesh Theekshana manages to jam the ball down to long on and turns the strike over.

49.11

Good length outside off, Kamindu Mendis swats the ball away off the outer half and gets it square through the off side or a single.

NOT OUT! Rishabh Pant has made a real mess of that one. Kuldeep Yadav sees Maheesh Theekshana stepping out and bowls it flat and wide of the off stump. Theekshana walks past the ball as he looks to swing across the line but misses and Pant has an easy stumping opportunity. Pant though dangled the carrot and allowed Theekshana to turn back before finally dislodging the bails. Theekshana starts walking but it is sent upstairs and the replays show that the bails came off when Theekshana's bat was in the air but he had grounded the bat first before it popped up and the rule clearly states that once the bat is grounded, even if it goes back up, the batter is safe and Pant is hiding his face.

Is he stumped out? A check for stumping sent upstairs by the on-field umpire. Side-on replay shows that Rishabh Pant is a bit late in flashing off the bail while Theekshana drags his bat back inside the popping crease.

48.50

Floated up full and wide of the off stump, Maheesh Theekshana gets well across off stump and looks to sweep but misses and gets hit on the pads.

Maheesh Theekshana is in at number 9.

48.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! No evidence of Shubman Gill touching the boundary cushion and it will be OUT! Kuldeep Yadav has dragged this one right back, bowling it short over middle and leg, Kusal Mendis goes deep in his crease to pull it aerially but gets it a lot straight and high off the bat. The ball goes high towards wide long on where Gill tracks back a bit and completes the catch. Gill has the presence of mind to lob the ball up before going over the stumps and comes back in to pouch it safely. End of a gritty knock from Mendis.

Has Gill managed to catch it cleanly at the ropes? Shubman Gill stationed at deep mid-wicket takes the reverse cup catch, just at the boundary ropes. He loses his balance and goes back into the ropes tossing the ball in the air. Comes back in the field and grabs it eventually. After no conclusive evidence of Gill's contact with the ropes with the ball in his hands, the TV umpire deems it as a fair catch. OUT.

48.30

A stifled appeal for LBW but the finger has gone up and Kusal Mendis cannot believe it. Mendis takes the review and the third umpire is called in. Coming to the ball, Kuldeep Yadav tossed it up on a length around leg stump and it seemed to be sliding right on. Mendis goes down for the sweep but misses and the ball lobs up off the pads and goes towards silly point where Rishabh Pant pouches the ball. Nothing on UltraEdge but Ball Tracking shows that it is pitching outside leg stump. NOT OUT!

48.22

Drags the length short, keeping it outside off stump, Kusal Mendis cuts it off the back foot and gets it past the diving man at backward point for a couple of more runs.

48.14

FOUR! Beautifully played and Kusal Mendis is on a roll here. Tossed up full and wide outside off, Mendis steps out and goes inside out over covers for yet another boundary, his third in the last four balls.

Kuldeep Yadav (9-0-30-0) to continue and will bowl the penultimate over.

Quicker and flatter on the stumps, Kusal Mendis rocks back and short-arm jabs it down to wide long on for one.

47.54

FOUR! Even better and that almost went all the way. FIFTY up for Kusal Mendis as well and he has finally managed to get some momentum going in this knock. Floated up on off stump, Mendis walks inside the line of the ball and sweeps it on the bounce over deep fine and picks up four more runs.

47.44

FOUR! Calculated risk from Kusal Mendis and he picks up a much-needed boundary. Tossed up on the stumps, Kusal goes right across the off stump and manages to sweep it up and over short fine leg for a boundary.

47.30

NOT OUT! Just in! Very well bowled by Riyan Parag as he deceives Kusal Mendis completely with the leg-break. This is tossed up on off stump, gets it to dip and then turn away big. Kusal is drawn forward and is beaten past the outside edge as Rishabh Pant dislodges the bails but the replays show that Kusal manages to drag his back leg inside the crease before the bails came off.

Is Kusal stumped out? The leg umpire Joel Wilson goes upstairs. The side-on replay shows that Kusal Mendis' back foot was grounded when Pant flashed off the bails. NOT OUT.

A confident appeal from Kusal Mendis for a caught behind but the umpire says no. Maheesh Theekshana drags this one down and bowls it wide of the off stump, turning it away. NOT OUT! The inside edge saves Washington Sundar here and Sri Lanka lose a review now. Jeffrey Vandersay bowls it flatter and from the front of the hand, on a nagging length and around middle, Sundar gets on the back foot to cut but gets caught on the crease. A half-hearted appeal but it is turned down. They go upstairs but UltraEdge confirms the inside edge.

Is he out? Sri Lanka do have both reviews up their sleeves and Jeffrey Vandersay convinces his skipper to go upstairs for LBW. The TV umpire summons the UltraEdge and there's a huge spike when the ball passes through the bat.

It began on a very similar note to the first two games as Rohit Sharma bossed the bowlers in the Powerplay but this time, Sri Lanka were able to not only get rid of the Indian skipper but a couple of more batters inside the first 10 overs. Dunith Wellalage has bowled a dream spell thus far that has brought him four wickets and India have it all to do from here. With the target still a long way off and just 4 wickets in hand, everything rests on the shoulders of Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag, both of whom are fairly new to ODI cricket. Pitched up on the stumps, Virat Kohli presents a solid front-foot defense to it. End of a testing over from Fernando.

4.54

FOUR! That one bursts through the hands and Virat Kohli would have had his heart in his mouth for a second. Hard length on middle, squares Kohli up beautifully and the leading edge is found. The fielder at point is just too close in and has no time to react as the ball flies to his left and goes through the hands in a flash. Maheesh Theekshana at deep third covers good ground to his right and dives in to collect the ball but takes a tumble and lets the ball over the ropes. Asitha Fernando on song here!

Perfect line around off and on a good length, angling back in, Virat Kohli covers the line well and defends the ball under his eyes.

OUT! TIMBER! Asitha Fernando sends Shubman Gill packing and Sri Lanka have an early wicket. Fernando bustles in and hits the deck hard at 132 KPH on middle, getting it to just angle back in. Gill tries to break the shackles by coming down the pitch and has a wild swing across the line but the ball keeps a tad low and beats the ball to smash into the stumps. Gill hasn't looked settled throughout this ODI series and departs for another low score.

FOUR! Luck now favoring Sharma as well and Maheesh Theekshana cannot believe it, 18 off that over. Slows it up a bit and angles it full and into the pads, Sharma sits down for the big sweep but gets an inside edge past leg stump and fine of short fine leg for yet another boundary.

3.54

FOUR! In the gap and Rohit Sharma is putting Maheesh Theekshana to the sword. Persists to bowl quick and full outside off, Sharma creams the cover drive, hitting it in between mid off and covers as the ball blitzs to the boundary ropes.

MISFIELD AND FOUR! Full and wide, there to be hit, Rohit Sharma throws his hands at it but doesn't quite time it. However, he gets enough power on it and Dunith Wellalage gets a bad bounce at covers, only managing a bit of hand on it as the ball runs away to the fence.

Lucky to get away with that Shubman Gill. Asitha Fernando hits the deck hard and angles it onto the pads, getting it to straighten a bit as well. Gill with minimal footwork looks to flick and gets a leading edge that goes well wide of cover-point and Gill picks up a couple of runs.

OUT!

NOT OUT!

Sadeera Samarawickrama is on the front foot and looks to dig it out and does so on the off side but the ball seems to have taken the boot first. A huge appeal but it is turned down and at the last moment, Rohit Sharma does review it. UltraEdge does confirm that the ball hit the boot first and Ball Tracking comes up with three reds.

Is he out? Rohit takes the review for LBW almost when the timer was about to go off. UltraEdge shows that the ball has first hit his front boot. Ball Tracking shows three reds and Sri Lanka lose another wicket.

Drinks! This has been a good little comeback for India as they have managed to send two Lankan batters in the hut within the span of 2.4 overs without conceding too many. Riyan Parag has brought India back into the contest, just when the Lankan duo of Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis had the license to go all guns blazing. With Sadeera Samarawickrama in at number 5, Sri Lanka will have to rebuild again. Also, a change in bowling - Mohammed Siraj (6-0-58-0) is back.

OUT! LBW! A huge appeal and given! Charith Asalanka has a word with his partner and does take the review. Smart bowling this from Riyan Parag as this is bowled much quicker and angled into the pads on a good length but the ball straightens down the line and Asalanka ends up playing all over it as he looks to flick it away. All in readiness then for the final game of the white-ball tour. The two umpires are the first ones to make their way out to the middle and are followed by the Indian players. It will be the pairing of Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando who will open the innings for Sri Lanka. Mohammed Siraj has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. A couple of slips to begin with. Let's play...

A coronation ceremony before the match as match referee Ranjan Madugalle is all set to officiate his 400th ODI match. Madugalle isn't just a match referee but also a former Sri Lankan skipper and has been officiating since 1993. He is presented with a special memento by the ICC.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain says there's plenty to play for as they have been challenged in the last couple of games. Adds they have addressed what needs to be done as a group and sometimes you need to credit the opposition as well. Informs two changes. Rishabh Pant and Riyan Parag are in for KL Rahul and Arshdeep Singh.

Charith Asalanka, the captain of Sri Lanka says that they are definitely going to bat first. Adds that the conditions look similar and informs that there is one change with Maheesh Theekshana coming in for Akila Dananjaya. Mentions that the guys have done well and are in a good position and want to do more of the same.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (WK) (In for KL Rahul), Riyan Parag (On debut and in for Arshdeep Singh), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (WK), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka (C), Janith Liyanage, Dunith Wellalage, Kamindu Mendis, Maheesh Theekshana (In for Akila Dananjaya), Jeffrey Vandersay, Asitha Fernando.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in the favor of Sri Lanka and Charith Asalanka elects to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold is pitchside. He says that it is a dry pitch and it will play similarly to the previous one but it is a fresh pitch. Adds that the groundsmen have taken more grass off and a lot of cracks are visible which will make it even tougher to go up against the spinners.

JUST IN - The Indian team is in a huddle and Riyan Parag has been presented the debut cap by Virat Kohli. It means he will be debuting for India in this 3rd ODI. Following a good T20I series earlier, this is another opportunity for him, this time in ODI cricket. And he could prove to be a useful component not only with the bat but also as a spinner.

The 'Khettarama', as they say, Colombo's pitch has proven to be a spinner's paradise, with its slow and tacky nature offering a stern examination of batting techniques. Spinners from both camps have exploited these conditions to the hilt, garnering maximum scalps - 27 wickets to be precise across two games so far. With the first inning score historically being 225 here, the conditions are expected to remain pretty much identical this time around as well. Will India find an equaliser or will Sri Lanka dominate again? Toss and teams are up next in a bit.

India on the other hand, has encountered inconsistencies with the bat. After getting good starts by the openers Rohit and Gill, the following batters have failed to capitalise on the momentum. Once usually their strong forte, if we take a magnified look, the Indian batters have recently struggled big time against the spinners. Importantly, Virat Kohli’s willow has been relatively quiet and he would be itching to get some runs to his name. While the all rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar have proved their mettle with both bat and ball. While Kuldeep Yadav too, has been decent and economical, the pacers have been a bit on and off and are raring to make a strong impact this time around.

Sri Lanka, the hosts after facing the clean sweep in the T20Is have made a roaring comeback in this ODI series. First stretching the opener in a tie and then winning the second match, their bowling unit, especially the tweakers have dominated the opposition. Yes, the top and middle order has crumbled and they need to find a cure to this recurring problem, but the lower middle order has covered up all the lapses with the bat. More importantly, despite the streak of injuries and their frontline bowlers being out of action, they have commendably done well against the mighty Indian side. They have found young match-winners at times - first in the form of Dunith Wellalage and now, Jeffrey Vandersay.

The stage is now set for a thrilling finale in the third ODI, with all to play for. The Lankan Lions have their noses in front, leading 1-0, and are sniffing a historic series victory. They've already ensured they won't leave empty-handed, with a shared series the worst-case scenario. Meanwhile, the Men in Blue find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Their remarkable 27-year dominance over Sri Lanka in the bilateral series hangs by a thread. Not since 1997 have the Indians tasted a series defeat against their island neighbours. It's do-or-die for Rohit Sharma's men as they look to keep that enviable record intact.

As India’s tour of Sri Lanka reaches its climax, in all fairness, we have had a blockbuster couple of weeks at our disposal coupled with sheer entertainment and top-notch cricketing action. We saw two consecutive ties - one in the third T20I and then in the first ODI which has showcased the fighting spirit of both sides, with neither willing to give an inch on the field. We are at Colombo and on that note, hello and a very warm welcome to our coverage.

... MATCH DAY ...
