That's a wrap to the second ODI. The West Indian spinners opened up some old scars of Australia and reminded them about their perennial issue. This win has handed them 10 crucial CWC points and now the hosts will be gunning for another 10 points along with the series win on Monday, 26th July 2021. The first ball will be at 2.30 pm local (6.30 pm GMT) but you can join us in advance for the build-up. Cheers!

Kieron Pollard, the victorious West Indian skipper, says it's pleasing to win but he thinks they have some work to do. Mentions that after having Australia 6 down for 45, they didn't put their foot on the accelerator. States that his batting unit didn't make it easy as well and further says that it seems that they don't like to do things the easy way. Calls the performance of his spinners fantastic. He is satisfied with the way his bowlers started the game but again repeats that to let Australia reach 187 was a bit disappointing. Terms Australia's bowling as world-class. Praises Pooran and Holder for their partnership and feels that the former is looking like his old self again. On the role of Jason Mohammed in the team, Pollard replies that it's a catch-22 situation with him as he is playing a role where if you lose a couple of wickets, you want him to bat long. Also adds that Mohammed gives them that sixth bowling option. Signs off by saying that they would look to come up with their best combination in the last match and wants his team to keep improving in all three facets of the game.

Alex Carey, the captain of Australia, says it was an interesting game of cricket and it doesn’t help when you are 5 down for not a lot of runs. Still, Carey is proud that the bowlers got them to a respectable total. Tells that they took some early wickets again and created opportunities. Mentions that unfortunately they could not close the game and he feels that they were probably 20-30 runs short. Feels that spin is going to be a threat on these type of wickets. The Aussie skipper is impressed with the way Wade and Starc put up a fight with the bat. Further says that with the new ball it might spin and bounce a bit more so they need to survive the initial period against the spinners. Lauds all his bowlers and is pumped up for the last match but at the same time, he is looking for improvement in their batting.

Nicholas Pooran is chosen for the Man of the Match award! He starts by saying that he wants to dedicate this to his wife as this is his first half-century since he got married. Tells us that for him it was just about building a partnership and putting up a fight with Jason Holder. Mentions that he backed his strengths and was looking to find the gaps. On his success, Pooran credits that to his hard work and shares that he has been trying a lot of things in the nets. Praises all the bowlers for their good work and is honest to admit that they allowed Australia to get too many runs. Feels that the body language in the field dropped due to that.

Presentation time...

Earlier in the match, Australia were in all sorts of trouble as they were reduced to 45 for 6 inside 13 overs. It was a steady procession for them but the lower order combined and propped up the total to 187. Wes Agar played a vital knock and his record stand with Adam Zampa appeared enough once Australia also dismissed West Indies' top 5 wickets for 72 runs. But as mentioned earlier, the record 6th wicket stand at this venue for the hosts brought the series back on level terms. A word of praise for Akeal Hosein also who created big impact in his first spell.

It was all about fighting! Adam Zampa's double blow had the West Indies reeling at 72/5 and Australia appeared to be running away with the show. However, Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder got together to stitch in a stand. The Aussies created opportunities but the dropped catch of Pooran when he was on 26 and the runs needed were 65 probably cost them the match. In a small chase, all you need is one big partnership and the 93-run stand between Pooran and Holder saw the hosts through.

A hard-fought win for West Indies! They had to sweat for every run as Australia turned up with full force in the defense of 187 runs. Mitchell Starc was bowling with a lot of fire and venom at the start and he got the better of Evin Lewis and Darren Bravo in one over. The partnership that followed between Shai Hope and Jason Mohammed could be pretty underrated but to keep the danger of Mitchell Starc at bay and form a 36-run stand at that time was no mean task. Shai slowly started to get into his groove, hitting a hat-trick of boundaries against Riley Meredith but then lost his concentration and got bowled after charging the spinner.

Commentary

Hello and welcome back for the chase. The Australian players have taken to the field and the two opening batsmen for West Indies, Shai Hope and Evin Lewis are at the crease. Mitchell Starc to get us underway with his steaming left-arm pace.

So then, West Indies need 188 to win and though it might seem like a sub-par total by Australia, you never know what will happen. West Indies were shot out for only 123 in the first ODI so they will have to better their last performance to scale down this target. Australia will look for a fast start with the ball. Let’s see if the chase is straightforward or there will be some tumbles. We will find out after a short break.

Akeal Hosein is up for a quick chat! The spinner says that he is pleased with his performance after not having a good T20I series. Shares that the conditions are a bit spin-friendly but still, you have to pitch the ball in the right area. Feels that partnerships will be the key as small totals can be difficult. Wants his team to take it as deep as possible.

West Indies had a dream start as their bowlers cleaned up the Australian top order in a jiffy and they weren’t finished. After Powerplay 1, Akeal Hosein emerged on the scene who just spun the ball like he never has and got three wickets with his first ten deliveries. He bowled in tandem with Hayden Walsh. Both of them continued to attack but Wade and Starc were up to the task. Finally, when Hayden Walsh came back on he broke the partnership but Zampa stayed with Wade. West Indies did manage to get Wade out but just failed to close out the innings and gave away some valuable runs which might come back to haunt them. Still, they will be the favourites given the score Australia posted.

A decent comeback by Australia after a forgetful start. They had a disastrous beginning with their top three getting sent back to the pavilion when the score was just 26. They were again rocked after Powerplay 1 by Akeal Hosein who ripped through their middle order and picked up 3 wickets, leaving Australia reeling at 45 for 6 within 13 overs. Then came Australia’s fightback with Wade and Starc adding 51 runs for the 7th wicket. Starc fell to spin as well, but Zampa came in and did a fine job. The hammer blow was dealt when Wade was dismissed for 36 runs, although it was not done yet. Wes Agar joined forces with Adam and together they stitched in a record 9th wicket partnership at this venue to hand Australia a fighting score.

47.1W

OUT! Joseph picks the final wicket! He follows the batsman down the leg side with a fuller length ball, Wes Agar is looking for space to flick it on the leg side but mistimes it badly off the leading edge towards Evin Lewis in the ring. He takes a simple catch at point and AUSTRALIA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 187!

The last man to come in is the debutant, Riley Meredith.

Cottrell serves a pacy length ball in the line of the stumps, Adam moves back to make room for a shot over the off side but fails to connect. The 9th wicket has gone down for 187 and that ends the record 59-run stand at this venue.

46.50

In the channel outside off, angling away, Adam walks across the stumps and tries his best to dig it out but misses.

46.41

Alzarri Joseph arrives in the middle. 23 needed off 93 balls with 4 wickets remaining. Is there some life left?

Jason Holder has been given out lbw. Once again he is quick to take the DRS. No bat is involved on this occasion. Ball Tracker shows that it's clipping the stumps. The onfield decision stays.

OUT! LBW! Length ball around off, angling in at 144 kph, Holder looks to tuck it away on the leg side but misses and the ball crashes into the pads. Starc appeals and the finger goes up. 34.22

NOT OUT! Length again on off, Holder looks to loft it over mid on but gets it off the inside half. It still manages to clear mid on. OUT! DEATH RATTLE! Starc is cock-a-hoop and we are loving every bit of his fiery bowling. This time he cranks up 148 kph and spears in a full ball around off, some swing again in the air as Bravo tries to defend from the crease. Fails to do so as the ball goes past him and destroys the stumps behind. The replays show that Darren was very late and played down the wrong line too. Australia are off to a perfect start!

Yet another fiery delivery, very full and on middle, it's speared in at 146 kph, swinging in, Lewis is late in bringing his bat down and is thudded on the pads. A huge appeal is made and this time the finger has gone up. Starc is delighted and jumps in joy! 178 needed off 283 balls.

Shout for an lbw, not given! A 149 kph delivery, Starc spears in a length ball just outside off and it comes back in a bit off the seam, Lewis offers no shot and is hit high on the back leg. NOT OUT! Peach of a delivery by Starc. He darts in a length ball close to off at 143 kph and gets it to nip away from there. Evin is squared up in defense and the ball kisses something before going behind to the keeper. Carey comes up with a diving catch. They appeal, the finger is up and Lewis is quick to take the DRS. The Hot Spot shows a flat line and then as per the protocol, the third umpire checks for the lbw as well. The impact is outside off and it's missing the stumps too. Evin is saved by the technology.

Review for a caught behind. The umpire raises his finger to the appeal from Starc but Evin Lewis reviews it straightaway. We can see on the replay that the ball flicked off the pads and missed the outside edge, so, a good review from Lewis.

Review for LBW. The West Indies players thought long and hard about it but finally, Pollard decides to take the review as breaking this partnership is crucial. There is certainly no bat involved as ULTRA EDGE shows. BALL TRACKING shows three reds and the review is successful! Starc was riding his luck a bit and is finally undone by Hayden Walsh. Joel Wilson is asked to change his decision to OUT!

26.3W

OUT! The decision is overturned. Flighted delivery, landing full and around middle, Starc sits down on one knee for the sweep shot but fails to connect cleanly. He is hit on the back leg, they appeal and appeal and appeal but the umpire remains unmoved. The bowler and the keeper manage to convince Kieron Pollard who goes for the DRS. The Ultra Edge shows no spike and the Ball Tracker indicates THREE REDS. The stand has been broken and Australia are 96 for 7.

Holder sticks his right hand out but it's too far from him. The ball races down the ground, Alzarri Joseph gives it the chase, tries to pull it back in and in the process collides with the advertising board. No harm done though. The onfield umpire gets it checked upstairs and the third umpire finds that Alzarri Joseph's hands were in contact with the rope. Boundary signalled.

Wide! Cottrell will have to re-bowl this as well. Short but down the leg side, shaping further down, Marsh stays back and lets it be.

Called a dead ball. Sheldon Cottrell might have been looking for a slower one but it slipped out of his hands as he was about to deliver. Reload.

0.50

A juicy full toss to greet the new batsman, Marsh though pushes it from the back foot to covers. Fails to make any use of the gift.

The batsman in red-hot form, Mitchell Marsh, is the new batsman.

OUT! Early success for West Indies and here comes the trademark salute from Sheldon Cottrell. A poor shot selection from McDermott and he bags a duck. First delivery from Sheldon in the region outside off, it's short and wide, Ben flashes his bat at it and gets a thick outside edge straight to Shai Hope. A disappointed Ben McDermott is back in the hut.

Hint of swing for Cottrell. He delivers it full and on middle, Josh flicks it on the leg side but finds the short mid-wicket fielder.

It's time to get going! The players are on the ground. Josh Philippe and Ben McDermott are the Aussie openers. Sheldon Cottrell will bowl with the first new ball. The players take a knee first up and now we are ready to play. Here we go...

Pitch report - No water has been added to the surface. There are patches of green grass on the deck along with dry grass. There will be variable bounce and this pitch is going to be very tough for batting.

JUST IN - Josh Hazlewood is not feeling well and Wes Agar has been allowed to take his place in the XI.

Right! Let's focus on the game at hand. The series is still wide open with Australia having the upper hand. For West Indies, it's not just about winning the next two matches but also plucking 20 CWC points that are up for grabs. If they do that, the hosts will shoot up from 9th and go level with Australia on the points table. Plenty riding on this and the next game.

Moving on, as you must be already aware that all the RT-PCR tests conducted came negative. It's a piece of very good and relieving news but at the same time, a gentle reminder to all of us that we're not yet free from the clutches of Covid-19 and all the necessary precautions have to be taken.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Evin Lewis, Shai Hope (WK) (In for Shimron Hetmyer), Darren Bravo, Jason Mohammed, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard (C), Jason Holder, Hayden Walsh, Sheldon Cottrell, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein.

Australia (Playing XI) - Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott, Mitchell Marsh, Moises Henriques, Alex Carey (WK/C), Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Riley Meredith (In for Wes Agar), Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

Take 2! And first things first. There won't be any start from scratch in the second ODI. The match will RESUME from the point we left it two days back due to unfortunate circumstances. So, as it has been flashing on the scorecard all day, Australia will bat first, and both teams will continue with the already announced XIs. For your convenience, so that you don't have to scroll all the way down, our next updates will carry the information regarding the Playing XIs of Australia and West Indies. Be with us...

What can we say now? STUMPS ON DAY 1! Ha ha ha. Join us back at 2.30 pm local then (1830 GMT)! We should have a fair idea about what is the final call about the toss by then. The good thing is that after that one positive case, everyone else in both squads has returned negative Covid tests. So the match should happen for sure. Fingers crossed.

However, Australia have problems. As per the rule, once the toss has happened, you are supposed to play with the same lineups which were announced at that time. West Indies are ready to abide by the rules but Australia want a fresh toss, so that they can have a new lineup, because the one announced was as per the conditions and the pitch on Thursday. So they have raised the matter to the ICC and we all await what will be the final decision. Of course, rules are rules but food for thought for the ICC? Since neither team got onto the field, would there be any issue in having a new toss? What if, you selected a team based on specific conditions and the next day, conditions change? Will be interesting to see ICC's take on this.

MATCH TO RESUME! Of course, not now. But at the time the third ODI was originally scheduled. So it was on Saturday, 24th July, 2021, at 2.30 pm local (1830 GMT). The date and time are the same but this will now be considered as the second ODI. The boards have agreed to play another game on Monday, 26th July, at 2.30 pm local (1830 GMT). Australia of course, won't have any problems but West Indies might, because they are slotted to play Pakistan the very next day!

Very unfortunate and surprising to say the least! The toss was done and play was about to start but a last-minute positive Covid-19 Test has seen the game to be suspended and thrown the remainder of the series into jeoprady. This shows how uncertain times are currently and we hope wherever you are watching, you are taking the right precautions and care to fight this battle against Covid-19. Let's hope everyone is safe and the person affected is not too adversely affected as that is the priority. We hope to see you soon. Till then, goodbye and take care!

UPDATE 1510 local (1910 GMT) - The official statement from Cricket West Indies ''The second  ODI between West Indies and Australia has been postponed due a positive Covid-19 test result from a non-playing member of the West Indies team. This decision was taken after the toss at Kensington Oval once the result was known due to the Covid-19 protocols. All members of both teams and match officials will be retested today. A decision on when the match will replayed will be made at a later date once the test results are known.''

UPDATE 1448 Local (1848 GMT) - PLAY POSTPONED! This is something no one expected! It has come out of the blue if we are being honest! In these uncertain times, there has been a positive Covid-19 Test in the bubble and the game has been POSTPONED!

Not the news we would have liked to start the day. The start of the game will be delayed by a little due to some operational issues.

PITCH REPORT - Darren Ganga is the pitch master for the day. Ganga says it is a glorious afternoon and tells there is a 30 percent chance of rain. Ganga says the straighter boundary is bigger. Ganga says that the wicket got slower. Darren Ganga says this pitch is light brown in color and says it is very dry. Tells the grass covering is patchy and batting will be tougher. He feels the bowlers will take advantage.

West Indies skipper, Kieron Pollard says that they just need to fix what went wrong. Pollard admits their batting was the problem and hopes to correct it and improve the situation. Pollard says today is one of the biggest game and says they have had a lot of discussions and hopes to do the business today. Pollard informs Hetmyer misses out and Hope comes back from injury.

Australia skipper, Alex Carey says they will elect to bat first, as the pitch looks similar to the first game. Also says, they are happy to start the ODI series with a victory and would look to continue with the same momentum. Ends by saying there is one change, Riley Meredith comes in place of Wes Agar.

West Indies (PLAYING XI) - Evin Lewis, Shai Hope (WK) (IN PLACE OF SHIMRON HETMYER) , Darren Bravo, Jason Mohammed, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard (C), Jason Holder, Hayden Walsh, Sheldon Cottrell, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein.

Australia (PLAYING XI) - Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott, Mitchell Marsh, Moises Henriques, Alex Carey (WK/C), Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Riley Meredith (IN PLACE OF WES AGAR), Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in the favour of Australia. They opt to bat first.

Hello and welcome to the second ODI between West Indies and Australia. The hosts capitulated with the bat and failed to get even close to Australia's target. Pollard and co. Will look to put on a much improved showing with the bat this time around. It was a very good performance from the visitors and they will be eyeing to repeat it and avenge for the T20I series loss by taking an unassailable lead tonight. Starc finding his mojo back would be the biggest boost for Australia. Can the hosts fight back to level the series or will Australia wrap it up? Stay tuned for toss and further updates.
