Right then, we have had a blistering start to the series with India coming out on top in a humdinger of a contest to take a 1-0 lead in the series. West Indies will be pumped up after that batting performance and will look to level the series. The 2nd ODI will be played on Sunday, the 24th of July at the same venue and it will begin at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT) but our build-up will begin much sooner. Do join us then. Take care and goodbye!

The captain of India, Shikhar Dhawan (97 off 99 balls) is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. Dhawan says he is happy to score runs but disappointed on missing the century. Adds that they needed partnership at the front as he knew it won't be easy for the inexperienced middle order. Informs there were nerves while bowling in the fag end but they held onto their nerves and made a couple of changes on the field. Shares that they used the bigger side as much as possible. Tells they want to keep on learning and make themselves better for the rest of the competition.

West Indies skipper, Nicholas Pooran says it feels like a win, a bitter-sweet match. Adds they wanted to play 50 overs and they did the job. Adds they did justice to the talent and showed what they are capable of. Hopes with the performance they go strength to strength against this kind of formidable side. Shares that bowlers did really well in the second half of the innings. He was looking for something around 315 but the bowlers did well. Adds that it's a good sign after the Bangladesh series. Mentions that he knows there will be many challenges but they need to stay positive.

Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to bowl first which proved to be a wrong decision as the Indian openers scored 73 runs in the first 10 overs itself. West Indies did pick up a few wickets but with the opposition just three down, the hosts were on the back foot. The top 3 for India all scored runs and put them in a great position to get a big total. The Indian innings crumbled in the final 10 overs and most of it was due to some really good bowling from the Windies pacers but India managed to cross the 300-run mark which is always a positive thing. West Indies fought tooth and nail in the chase and showed that they can bat under pressure but no one from the top order managed to bat through. The Indian bowling attack got the wickets and managed to see off the opposition, winning by a very small margin in the end.

India will be a relieved side as after posting big total on the board, they would have expected to win by a more comfortable margin but they were challenged to dig deep. Mohammed Siraj got the early breakthrough for his side but after that, the Indian bowlers were treated to a bit of hammering. Shardul Thakur who proved to be expensive early on came back in the middle overs and got his side back on top after which India had a strong grip on the game. The Indian bowlers managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals but were never able to shut out the opposition which almost proved too costly in the end.

Heartbreak for West Indies as they managed to get in touching distance of the total but fell agonizingly short. Even though the hosts lost the match, seeing contributions throughout the batting order will be a big positive for them going forward as they even managed to play the complete quota of 50 overs, only for the 7th time in about 40 matches. Kyle Mayers was prolific at the top order and Shamarh Brooks supported him well. King got a half-century but it was the fight put up by Akeal Hosein and especially Romario Shepherd that got the Windies ever so close to chasing down the target. In the end, it proved to be a mountain too steep to climb but they will look to level the series in the next game.

An absolute thrilling encounter that went down to the wire to get the series underway but it is Mohammed Siraj who has managed to hold his nerves and seal the victory for his side. India just about edge West Indies to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The players are out in the middle. Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers are the openers for West Indies. Mohammed Siraj to start with the ball.

...The Chase...

Right then! West Indies have a tough task ahead and they need someone to anchor the innings. Their batters are not in good form but will hope to get into the groove here and put in a solid performance. Stay tuned for the chase as we will be back in a bit.

Shubman Gill is up for a chat. He says that it was a good wicket to bat on and he enjoyed batting on it but is a bit disappointed with the way he got out. Adds that they are really excited to get the opportunity to play here and have posted a good total. Mentions that 300 plus on any wicket is a challenging total but will have to bowl tight lines. Mentions that after the first 20 or so overs, the ball was gripping a bit and the spinners will come into play in the second innings.

West Indies have kept themselves in the game thanks to some brilliant fielding and good bowling. They failed to keep things tight early on and India made the bulk of their runs in the first half of the innings. It needed a special effort from the skipper to open gates for them and slowly the Windies got their rhythm in the game. They kept on getting better as the game progressed. The pacers lacked consistency at the front but both the spinners in tandem did well to control the middle phase. West Indies have not been at their best with the bat in recent times and they will hope to give a tough fight here.

The top three notched big runs but the inexperienced middle order failed to build on the momentum. India at one stage were 230 for 3 thanks to the brilliance of Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. All of them scored more than fifty with Dhawan missing his ton by just three runs. But once the wickets fell, the middle order failed to capitalize on it. Yadav and Samson got a start but gave away their wicket. Hooda and Patel were struggling a bit and gave away their wicket at the wrong time. No doubt, 300 is an above-par total but the way India started the innings, it seemed they were eyeing for the 350-mark.

Excellent final phase by the Men in Maroon! At one stage, India were clearly eyeing a score of 350 but some tremendous bowling in the death saw them pulling India back. Still, it is a huge score and it will test the Windies' batting dearly.

FOUR! Romario Shepherd just misses his mark on the yorker and Shardul Thakur takes full advantage of it. Pitched up on middle, Thakur heaves it away between deep mid-wicket and long on to end the innings with a boundary. India finish with 308/7!

49.50

Full and outside off, Thakur drives it towards cover and denies the single. Mohammed Siraj scampers back in time as well.

49.51wd

WIDE! Pacy delivery, full and down the leg side, wide called.

49.41

Full and wide, angling across the right-hander. Mohammed Siraj reaches it and almost squeezes it past backward point but the substitute fielder over there, Keacy Carty makes a brilliant diving stop. Just a single then.

49.31

Full and on leg stump, Thakur heaves it towards wide long on and looks for two but has to settle for just a single.

49.21lb

Leg bye! Switches to around the wicket and bowls it full into the pads. Siraj fails to whip it away leg side and the ball goes off the pads towards backward point. The batters scamper through for a leg bye.

49.11

Full and straight, drilled down to long on for a single by Shardul Thakur. With that, the 300 is up for India.

OUT! TIMBER! Excellent comeback delivery from Alzarri Joseph! Full and on off stump, almost yorker length and above 140 clicks. Deepak Hooda goes a bit too hard at it as he looks to clobber it across the line. The ball tails in late and sneaks under the bat of Hooda to knock the off stump off the ground. Joseph finishes his spell with a double-strike and both set batters depart.

48.54

FOUR! Joseph attempts the yorker yet again but serves a high full toss on middle. Hooda heaves it away into the mid-wicket fence for a boundary.

48.41

This is banged in short and around off, at 145 clicks. Shardul Thakur gets hurried on but manages to pull it in front of mid-wicket for a single.

Shardul Thakur comes in now.

48.3W

OUT! KNOCKED HIM OVER! Just too much heat on that one for Axar Patel to handle and Alzarri Joseph sends him packing. Keeps it full and bowls it on leg stump, at 142 clicks. Patel looks to flick it off his legs but ends up playing all over it and gets beaten for pace. The ball goes on to shatter the leg stump and Patel departs after a decent cameo. Joseph gets his first wicket of the match as well.

48.21

Very full, at the base of middle stump and with some serious heat behind it as well. Hooda jams it out towards long on and collects a run.

48.11

47.51

Full again, around off, Patel drills this one towards wide long off for yet another single.

47.41

Slower delivery, at just 103 clicks and targeting the hips. Hooda is way too early in his pull and gets it towards deep backward square leg for one.

47.31

Very full and wide, Patel gets low and slashes it with timing but straight to the man at deep cover for just a single.

47.24

FOUR! Seales goes searching for the wide yorker but serves a half volley and Axar Patel just nails it over extra cover for a boundary.

47.21wd

WIDE! Very full and wide, spilled beyond the tramline outside off.

47.16

SIX! Finally, Axar Patel breaks the shackles and connects one. Length ball, slanted across the left-hander, Patel is able to free his arms and thumps it back over the bowler's head for a biggie.

Drinks! Even after losing an early wicket, West Indies have done really well to score at almost run-a-ball and that is mainly due to the knock from Kyle Mayers. Mayers has shown positive intent right from the get-go and is being well supported by Shamarh Brooks. India will need to rely on their spinners to get a bit of control out there in the middle otherwise they might allow the opposition to take full control of the chase. A fascinating middle phase awaits. With that said, Yuzvendra Chahal is inserted into the attack.

We are done with the pre-match formalities and it's now time to play! The umpires and the players are out in the middle. The two openers for India, Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill make their way out to the middle as the Windies team is seen in a huddle. Alzarri Joseph has the new ball in hand and is raring to go but just before the first ball is bowled, the players are seen taking the knee to show their support for the BLM movement. Let's play...

We are minutes away from the start of the match but first, the two sides line up for their respective national anthems. It will be the anthem of Trinidad and Tobago played first followed by the national anthems of India and West Indies.

Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of India, says that they were thinking about bowling first too as the wicket looks a bit sticky but is happy with batting first as well. Adds that he is a cool captain and makes sure that the team stays energetic and tries to keep the process going in order to get the wins. Mentions that the bench strength they have is complimentary and the exposure the young guys get is a good stage to showcase their talent. Adds that Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer are a few guys to look out for and ends by saying that they get great support whenever they play here.

West Indies skipper, Nicholas Pooran says they will bowl first. Adds that they are doing it due to the weather around and they want to use the conditions early on. Shares that it was important to win the toss and hopes the player will be happy about it. Tells that they spoke about the recent loss and they want to improve in different areas. Informs Jason Holder is out due to Covid but Kyle Mayers is back after the injury and the rest are the same players from the Bangladesh series.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Shai Hope (WK), Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks, Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran (C), Rovman Powell, Akeal Hosein, Romario Shepherd, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie and Jayden Seales.

India (Playing XI) - Shikhar Dhawan (C), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.

TOSS - West Indies have won the toss and they will have a BOWL first.

India have been on a roll in the limited overs format and having bagged both the T20I and ODI series against formidable hosts England, they will be looking to continue their march. As many as six senior players, including regular skipper Rohit Sharma, have been rested for this tour but given the depth in the Indian side, Shikhar Dhawan will look to guide them to yet another series win here. Who will start off on the right foot and take the lead in the series? We'll find out soon. Toss and team news in a bit.
