Commentary

Right then, as neutrals, we couldn't have asked for a better start to the series. Many would have expected a strong Indian side to breeze past Charith Asalanka and his men, who were down on confidence after the T20I series. However, the character shown by Sri Lanka was evident for all to see, demonstrating that they mean business. This sets the tone for an exciting series ahead, with both teams showing their determination to come out on top. The second ODI of the three-match series will take place at the same venue on Sunday, 4th August. The first ball will be bowled at 2.30 pm IST (9 am GMT) but you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, goodbye and take care!

The skipper of Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka says that they did well but should have done better to restrict India to fewer runs. Adds that with the lights on, it gets a bit easier to bat. Says that with the left-handers coming in to bat he knew he could bowl and keep things tight. Concludes that he is really happy with the kind of energy shown by the boys in the second innings and also appreciates Dunith Wellalage and Pathum Nissanka's knocks with the bat.

The captain of India, Rohit Sharma says that they batted well in patches and had no consistent momentum in the chase. Feels that they knew that the game would start once the spinners come on. Tells that they are not going to look too much into the result. Shares that the pitch remained the same for both innings. Ends by saying that the game shifted towards both teams at different times and that they should have got that one run.

Dunith Wellalage is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his all-round brilliance. He says that he came out with a plan in the second innings with the wicket offering spin. Adds that India bowled really well and he looked to shift the pressure back on them and build partnerships. Further says that the wicket was slow and they looked to target the 220-run mark. Mentions that the skipper and Hasaranga changed the game for them and it feels good to get the tie.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, the toss went Charith Asalanka's way, and he had no hesitation in opting to bat first. Mohammed Siraj got the ball to move both ways, but Sri Lanka did well to weather the early storm, losing only one wicket during the Powerplay. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Pathum Nissanka anchored the innings. After Nissanka's departure, Dunith Wellalage led the recovery for Sri Lanka, building partnerships first with Janith Liyanage and then with Akila Dananjaya. Through his maiden ODI fifty, the hosts recovered from 142/6 to end up with a respectable total of 230 on the board. For India, Axar Patel was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 33 from his 10 overs.

Charith Asalanka rotated his bowlers well, keeping the runs in check, but it was more about taking wickets than containing the run rate. KL Rahul and Axar Patel then got together and ticked along, only for Rahul to throw it away. Sri Lanka sensed blood in the water and pounced on that opening to nick Axar Patel off. From there, Shivam Dube brought India within touching distance but Sri Lanka refused to go away and hung in there till the end. Charith Asalanka led the turnaround for his side, finishing with 3 wickets to help his side eke out a tie. This is the second time an ODI between India and Sri Lanka has ended in a tie with the other occasion being in 2012 in Adelaide.

In pursuit of 231 runs, Rohit Sharma made his intentions clear from the start, getting India off to a quick start. With Rohit's 47-ball 58, the visitors gained a strong head start in the chase, leaving Sri Lanka playing catch-up for the rest of the effort. However, through Dunith Wellalage's twin strikes and an Akila Dananjaya wicket, the hosts found their way back into the game. Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli batted sensibly, accumulating runs through singles and doubles. However, lightning struck twice as India lost two set batters in quick succession, leaving the game hanging in the balance.

What a finish to the game! A topsy-turvy game where the pendulum swung one way and then the other but at the end of it all, Sri Lanka have sneaked away a TIE. With just one run needed and Shivam Dube on strike, not many would have predicted a tie but Charith Asalanka and Sri Lanka did not give up. First, Asalanka got the review spot on to trap Dube right in front of the stumps and then Arshdeep Singh went for a hack to be caught plumb in front. India will be gutted by this result as they were ahead in the game for most parts but none of their batters took it upon themselves to see the team home.

47.5W

OUT! PLUMB IN FRONT! Would you believe it? India lose two in two and the game will end in a tie. Charith Asalanka darts this one in from around the wicket, full and at the stumps, Arshdeep Singh gets down for the glory shot as he looks for the slog sweep. The ball skids through off the deck and goes under the bat of Arshdeep to hit him flush on the back pad. It looked dead in front to the naked eye. Arshdeep Singh has no option but to send it upstairs for review. The UltraEdge shows no spike and the Ball Tracking confirms all three reds. Sri Lanka despite a tie will consider this a big heist as they looked down and out when Dube hit a boundary earlier in the over.

A loud shout for LBW and up goes the finger! Do we have a tie here? This looked out in real time. Arshdeep Singh has sent it upstairs and Mohammed Siraj at the other end is gutted.

More drama! Arshdeep Singh walks out to bat with the scores level. Remember, there is no Super Over and the game will end in a tie if India do not manage to score the run.

47.4W

OUT! LBW! This game isn't over yet! Sri Lanka and Charith Asalanka fight back and have managed to get the big wicket of Shivam Dube! Charith Asalanka from wider of the crease bowls it with the angle, coming into the left-hander on middle and leg, Shivam Dube gets his front leg out and looks to play at it with a straight bat and misses. The ball sneaks through the gap between bat and pad and hits him on the pad. A loud appeal for LBW and the umpire turns it down. The batters cross as the ball rolls behind for a leg bye. Charith Asalanka sends it upstairs for a review and the UltraEdge shows no spike as the ball passes the bat and all three reds come up on the Ball Tracking. The original onfield appeal is overturned to OUT! Sri Lanka believe and have just one more wicket to claim and tie the game.

This could be huge! Sri Lanka have sent it upstairs for an LBW appeal. Charith Asalanka does not look interested but they have to go for it.

47.34

FOUR! Scores are level! This has been some good power-hitting from Shivam Dube under pressure! Asalanka digs it short and over off, Shivam Dube makes room and cuts it hard and past cover for a boundary.

47.20

Digs it short and on off, Shivam Dube slaps it hard but finds the fielder at cover.

47.10

From around the wicket bowls this short and outside off, Shivam Dube pushes it to covers.

Charith Asalanka will continue. Sri Lanka are still in the game if they get Dube here.

Serves a googly on middle and leg, Mohammed Siraj flicks it to deep square leg and gets Shivam Dube back on strike.

Commentary

We are back with the chase! The two umpires make their way out to the middle followed by Sri Lankan players who are spreading out to take the field. Indian opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill stride out to the centre. Asitha Fernando is handed the new ball and is on top of his mark, raring to go. Let's play!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

With a target of 231 runs set for India, Sri Lanka will carry some momentum into the next innings, knowing they can restrict the Indian side if they make full use of the assistance available on the pitch especially with their three spinners. While India would have been satisfied with this target at the start of the game, they will need to play sensibly to achieve it. The game is nicely poised at the halfway mark. Will Sri Lanka start with spin right away and make an early impact? Or will India, with their batting firepower, cruise through the chase? Stick around as we find out with the chase unfolding in a bit.

Dunith Wellalage, the star of the first innings is down for a chat.  Wellalage says that he had prepared for this wicket and tried to play his natural game. Adds that he looked to rotate the strike. He backs Wanindu Hasaranga and the Sri Lankan pacers to defend this total. Feels that it is not easy to bat and need to bowl in partnerships to put the pressure.

However, towards the end, Dunith Wellalage put on a fine display, scoring his maiden ODI fifty and staying unbeaten at 67 runs putting up a 46 runs partnership along with Akila Dananjaya helping his side cross the 220-run mark, which had seemed far-fetched at one point.

Janith Liyanage and Dunith Wellalage then absorbed the pressure, enduring a few probing overs from Kuldeep and Sundar. They counter-attacked when Shubman Gill was brought in for an over, taking 14 runs off him and easing the pressure. A crucial moment came when Janith Liyanage walked off after a huge appeal for a caught at slip, only to see on replays that he had not made contact with the ball. Their 41-run partnership was vital for Sri Lanka, considering how the game had unfolded thus far.

The Indian spinners maintained the pressure, with Axar Patel removing the dangerous Sadeera Samarawickrama cheaply. Despite wickets tumbling around him, Pathum Nissanka carried his form from the T20Is and kept one end strong ensuring he notched up a well-deserved half-century, making the most of a dropped catch by Mohammed Siraj at 21. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav kept things tight and created enough doubts in the batters' minds, taking two more wickets, including that of Nissanka.

Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh began the attack with tight lines and lengths, preventing the home side from gaining early momentum. Avishka Fernando struggled and was dismissed by Siraj in the third over for just one run, putting Sri Lanka on the back foot from the outset. Kusal Mendis managed a start but never looked settled, falling to Shivam Dube after the first Powerplay.

A strong comeback by Sri Lanka to post 230 runs on the board by the end of the first innings all thanks to some exceptional batting from Dunith Wellalage.

A single to end the innings! Arshdeep Singh slips in a slower bouncer, over middle, Dunith Wellalage backs away and tries to slap it up and over backward point. Gets a feather on it and it goes on the bounce to the keeper, KL Rahul which allows the batters to scamper across for a quick run. 8 runs off the final over and Sri Lanka end with 230 on the board!

49.54

FOUR! Smart batting! Tailing into the left-hander with an upright seam, on a fullish length, Dunith Wellalage backs away slightly and gets his bat down in time. Opens the bat face to steer it between backward point and short third for a boundary.

49.41

Quick single taken! Pace on and on a hard length, on off, Mohamed Shiraz taps it with soft hands in front of Virat Kohli at backward point and he is called through for the run. Kohli misses the shy at the batting end but Dunith Wellalage is in by then. The ball rolls away wide of deep mid-wicket but Wellalage wants to stay on strike and he refuses the run on the overthrow.

The debutant, Mohamed Shiraz walks out to bat at number 10 for Sri Lanka.

49.3W

OUT! TAKEN! The knuckle ball does the trick for Arshdeep Singh! Arshdeep charges in from over the wicket and bangs it into the deck. Akila Dananjaya shapes up for the ramp but he does not have any pace to work with this time. Goes through his shot early and ends up spooning it to Washington Sundar at backward point who runs a few steps ahead to complete the catch. End of a good little hand by Akila Dananjaya. He goes for 17(21). The 46-run stand comes to an end and Sri Lanka are now 224/8 with 3 balls remaining in the innings.

49.21

Arshdeep angles it in at pace, fuller and on middle, Dunith Wellalage jams it out in front of cover for a single.

49.11

Arshdeep starts the final over with a slower bumper, over middle, Akila Dananjaya helps the pull to deep square leg and gets to the other end.

It will be Arshdeep Singh to take the final over. Can he restrict Sri Lanka to under the 230-run mark?

Dunith Wellalage backs away and then swivels for the pull. Hits it flat and over the deep backward square leg fence for a six. 13 runs off the over and Sri Lanka are now 222/7.

48.51

At the stumps by Siraj, on a length, Akila Dananjaya backs away and swipes it across the line to deep mid-wicket for one.

48.41

Fuller in length, on the pads, Dunith Wellalage flicks it off his pads to deep mid-wicket for a single. 6 runs off the first 3 balls. How many more can Sri Lanka can get off this over?

48.34

FOUR! Akila Dananjaya in the previous over and this time, it is Dunith Wellalage! Both ramps played to perfection. Siraj sees the batter back away and follows him with a short delivery. Dunith Wellalage adjusts well and plays the upper cut over the keeper for a boundary. Siraj is unhappy with where Kuldeep Yadav has positioned himself at deep third and wants him to be finer.

48.21

This is on a back of a length by Siraj, on middle, Akila Dananjaya nudges it in front of mid-wicket for a single.

47.44

FOUR! Clever, very clever! Arshdeep bangs it into the surface, over middle, Akila Dananjaya lets the ball come to him and ramps it over the keeper for a boundary.

47.31

MAIDEN ODI FIFTY for Dunith Wellalage! This has been a fighting knock by the young man and the Sri Lankan dugout are on up on their feet to applaud the knock. Arshdeep tries the yorker but it comes out as a low full toss, on off, driven with a straight bat to long on for a single by Dunith Wellalage to bring up his half century.

We are done with the national anthems. A sparse crowd is in on a Friday afternoon in Colombo, but it should build as the day progresses. The Indian players are in a huddle near the ropes before taking their respective positions on the field. The two umpires are followed by the two Sri Lankan openers, Avishka Fernando and Pathum Nissanka. It will be Mohammed Siraj to kickstart the proceedings with the new ball for India. Two slips in place. Away we go...

We are moments away from the first ball in this series opener, but before that, Charith Asalanka and Rohit Sharma will lead their respective sides out for the national anthems. The Indian players and support staff are wearing black armbands in memory of the former Indian batter and coach, Anshuman Gaekwad, who passed away earlier this week. It will be the Indian national anthem first, followed by that of Sri Lanka.

Shreyas Iyer is in for a chat. He says that he looks to bring out his natural game, not think much about the conditions and bat freely. Tells that with the kind of team they have, they will want to just go out and execute their plans well. Concludes that he has worked with Gautam Gambhir in the past and appreciates him for the kind of freedom and confidence he gives to a player. Further says that he brings out the best in the players and you get to learn a lot from him.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (WK), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka (C), Janith Liyanage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Akila Dananjaya, Asitha Fernando, Mohamed Shiraz (On ODI debut).

The captain of India, Rohit Sharma says that they are okay with bowling first. Tells that the pitch tends to get slower as the game progresses. Further says that they have played a lot of cricket here and know the conditions at this venue. Feels that this series is a good opportunity to know where they stand. Informs that Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Kuldeep Yadav return to the side. Also informs that Shivam Dube will feature in this game. Reckons that they have a pretty decent balance. Says that despite not crossing the finishing line at the ODI World Cup, there were a lot of positives for them. Adds that it is important to create an atmosphere where the players can express themselves.

Charith Asalanka, the skipper of Sri Lanka says they will bat first because it looks pretty dry. Adds that Mohamed Shiraz makes his debut and they are going with 6 batters and 5 bowlers. Says that they have to improve their mental skills, especially after the last game but they will look to play well and focus on the present. Concludes that injuries are a concern for a captain but they will need to face these situations and do well going ahead with the second lineup.

TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the flip of the coin and they have opted to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Scott Styris is near the deck. He starts by telling the dimensions of the square boundaries - 77 metres to one side and 73 meters to the other. Feels that there are plenty of runs to be had on this surface. Informs that this wicket was used for Qualifier 2 in the Lanka Premier League. Adds that despite its use in the recent past, the surface does not have much wear and tear. States that the wicket has very little grass covering and feels that it may turn a little bit and could be a bit tacky. Opines that it will not be anything like what we saw in the 3rd T20I. Reckons that the ball will slide nicely onto the bat under lights.

India certainly look like a dominant force against a side facing significant challenges, but Sri Lanka will believe they have what it takes to put forth a strong game and beat any team on the given day. Can India continue their successful run in the island nation, or will the home team stage a turbulent fightback to win this first game? We shall soon find out as the toss and team updates come to you in a bit.

On the other hand, India have pushed the reset button, with Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir seemingly crafting meticulous plans ahead of the next big event, the Champions Trophy. The team is further bolstered by the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who will be eager to pick up where they left off last year. Kuldeep Yadav could prove to be a crucial asset, and it is very likely that this team may also see a couple of debutants making their mark in ODIs.

After suffering a 3-0 defeat in the T20I series, Sri Lanka face additional challenges with injuries to key pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka, complicating matters even further for skipper Charith Asalanka. The fast-bowling department is in disarray, with Asitha Fernando remaining as the sole frontline seamer. He may be paired with either of the new replacements, Mohamed Shiraz or Eshan Malinga. However, with the pitch favouring spin, Sri Lanka's quality spinners can help compensate for the inexperience in the pace unit. The inconsistency in the middle order has been a significant concern over the years, which the team will look to address quickly to ease some pressure on the top order.

Hello and a warm welcome to the opening match of the eagerly anticipated three-game ODI series between India and Sri Lanka, set to begin at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Excitement is building up as fans worldwide await Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's return to the field. Sri Lanka face a significant challenge, especially with injury concerns, as they aim to avenge their recent whitewash in the T20I series.
